RIEBEEK College Girls’ High School has undertaken a number of holiday projects since the end of exams. One of it was to bake biscuits for the elderly. Worker hampers and a shoe collection preceded their “gifts for the elderly” project. After they had baked the biscuits they gathered to gift wrap them and delivered the treats personally to the elderly at Aandmymering Old Age Home in Uitenhage. Octavia Johannes, head of Riebeek Interact said, “Interact Committee 2017/2018 has had an eventful start. Upholding the motto ‘Service Above Self’ we’ve managed to complete three projects. “Our annual workers’ hampers collection led to us handing over hampers to our ground staff. We also undertook the matric school shoe collection. The ‘Biscuits For Christmas’ initiative involved packaging biscuits to hand over to the elderly at Aandmymering. “The girls have proved to be dedicated and a hard-working group of Interacters as they have baked nearly 1000 biscuits and sacrificed their time to come to school during the holidays to pack them. “Thank you to the teachers who helped us and all who contributed to our collections,” said Octavia.

Trained ‘hopon guides’ in Addo elephant park WHILE elephants are what the Addo Elephant National Park is best well-known for, this is only the beginning of an adventure which often requires more than one day to explore in its entirety. Game and bird viewing takes on many forms here – the most economical of which is taking a self-drive through the Park. According to Fayroush Ludick: Regional Manager: Communications, SANParks, there are more than 120km of tourists roads available to explore, all of which are suitable for most vehicles while searching for the Big 5. “Alternatively, hire a trained hop-on guide to accompany you and your family and/or friends in the comfort of your own vehicle, as he directs you to the best viewing spots and animal encounters while he waxes lyrical about the Park’s fauna and flora,” said Ludick. For a more relaxed and elevated view of the Park, though, a choice of six guided game drives throughout the course of the day leaves guests already planning their next visit. Horse trail & hiking trails For the more adventurous, participate in a guided horse trail – either in the Big 5 Nyathi section of the Park or along the Zuurberg mountain range, which offers expansive views of the Park and Sundays River Valley below. Both provide the chance of coming

across various animals while on horseback. While at Zuurberg, guests may also want to explore the area on foot by taking to either the one or three hour hiking trails. Additional walks and hikes are available in the Park’s Woody Cape section near the town of Alexandria. A myriad short trails are available in the lush Alexandria Forest, or for something more challenging, why not try the two-day, 32km Alexandria Hiking Trail? Offroad trails Off-road enthusiasts may want to explore the Park’s more rugged terrain along the Bedrogfontein 4x4 trail. The 45km route is graded 2-3 and can be easily travelled within six hours, starting from the Kabouga section of the Park outside the town of Kirkwood, all the way to Darlington Dam in the north. Sound warning on beach behaviour ZERO tolerance with drinking on all Nelson Mandela Bay beaches and any other criminal activities are squarely in the crosshairs of both the Metro Police and the South African Police Services (SAPS) this festive season. This pertinent warning was sounded by both Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Safety and Security, Cllr John Best, and MajorGeneral Dawie Rabie of SAPS at the municipality’s official launch of its Festive Season Safety Plan. “Special operations at our ports of entry and visible patrols on our beaches in conjunction with the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) will take place and soon we will also embark on crime prevention operations.

“The launch of this programme is in line with SAPS plans to ensure that members of the public can enjoy themselves on our beaches and at tourist attractions. “A zero tolerance of alcohol consumption will be maintained,” Major-General Rabie said. For the first time this year the Metro Police will have six officers on cycles doing duty at the beachfront. In addition twenty tourist safety ambassadors, empowered with peace officer training, will also do duty at the Donkin and the beachfront. “Since we launched the Metro Police, we intended to work very closely with the South African Police Services. We never intended to go on the arduous journey of fighting crime alone.

“It is therefore essentially good that SAPS has a similar approach to our broad objective to maintain a zero tolerance campaign against drinking on our beaches. “It it also not helpful if people are not allowed to drink on Kings Beach, Hobie and Pollok but they can be drunk at Maitlands beach. “We will therefore enforce this directive at all our beaches and law enforcement will take place in all sixty wards in Nelson Mandela Bay,” said MMC John Best. Advocate Keith Meyer, Executive Director for Safety and Security said, “We will make sure that you have a safe festive season and we would like to send a clear message. “We will not allow any breathing space for criminals,” Meyer added.

Rocklands school wins national competition

The school won the Sextet and Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass (SATB) Chamber Choir categories of the national Eistedford which forms part of the Department of Basic Education’s school enrichment programme. The competition focused on promoting unity in diversity, national reconciliation, positive values, a new South African national identity, social transformation and social cohesion among school-going South African youth. “We represented the province at the competition and won nationally,” Rocklands choirmaster, Buyisile Plaatjie said.

The choir, which started in 1997 has an 80member mass choir made up of learners from grade 8 - 12. There is also the smaller choir consisting of 30 to 40 learners. Melikaya Adams, a Grade 11 pupil, who joined the choir in 2014, said being part of the choir helps him stay away from negative elements in his community. “In my community youth of my age are involved with a lot of crime. Being part of the choir helps me to stay away from crime,” Adams said. Ntombikayise Mbovane, a Grade 12 learner said she loves the choir because she loves to sing. “I love singing and when I am sad or in a bad space I sing because music makes me happy. Having won the Eisteddfod is an amazing feeling. It was my first time in Johannesburg and this competition made it possible for me to see things I never saw before but only see on tv,” said Mbovane. Principal Andile Mabele said the school is surrounded by impoverished communities. “In some of the areas that the children are from there is drug and alcohol abuse and the choir keeps them off the street and they focus on their academics. When the learners attend the choir competitions the matric results of the previous year are mentioned and this motivates them to know that there is an increase in the school’s matric pass rate,” Mabele said. The school’s matric pass rate increased from 62% in 2015 to 65% in 2016. They are hoping for further increases this year. “Sovereign Foods played a major role in us winning the competition. They provided much needed sponsorship to get us to the competition,” Plaatjie said. According to Thuto Maepa, Sovereign Foods Group Executive Human Resources, “The school, learners and parents worked hard to increase the pass rate. The whole community and parents around the school pulled together. They used a few class rooms, added mattresses and got the matric students to sleep there.

Listeriose: ‘Oppas vir sekere soorte suiwel’ CARALEE DORFLING DIE uitvoerende hoof van ’n Oos-Kaapse suiwelproduktemaatskappy het verbruikers gewaarsku dat daar bewyse is wat listeriose met suiwelprodukte verbind. Pierre van Rensburg, uitvoerende hoof van die Sundale-melkery (met vrylopende beeste) in Oos-Londen, sê die algemeenste kossoorte waar die bakterieë voorkom, is in melk wat nie gepasteuriseer is nie, sagte kase, vooraf gaargemaakte vleis en gerookte vis. Listeriose het die laaste paar weke onder die vergrootglas gekom nadat 40 mense die jaar in die land aan die siekte dood is.

Die nasionale gesondheidslaboratoriumdiens (NHLS) het die dodetal bevestig en sê 592 gevalle is reeds aangemeld. Die siekte word veroorsaak deur die bakterie bekend as Listeria monocytogenes wat in kossoorte voorkom. Listeriose kan koors, swakheid en diarree tot gevolg hê. Volgens Van Rensburg is Sundale bekommerd oor die uitbreek van die siekte en probeer hulle die gemeenskap bewus maak van die gevare daarvan om suiwelprodukte te eet wat nie gepasteuriseer is nie. “Maas is steeds ’n stapelvoedsel vir die grootste deel van die bevolking (in die provinsie) en talle verbruikers dink maas is slegs melk wat in die son gelaat is om suur te raak.

“Dít het egter grootliks tot die uitbreking van listeriosegevalle in die provinsie gelei, met dodelike nagevolge,” sê Van Rensburg. Sizwe Kupelo, woordvoerder van die provinsiale gesondheidsdepartement, sê die departement is bewus van 24 gevalle wat tussen Februarie en November deur laboratoriumtoetse in die Oos-Kaap bevestig is. Kupelo sê in die tweede geval het ’n 69-jarige man sy dokter op 13 Oktober gaan spreek omdat hy griepsimptome ervaar het. “Hy het griepmedisyne en ’n Voltaren-inspuiting gekry. Die volgende dag het hy egter begin braak en ’n verskriklike kopseer en ’n stywe nek gehad. “Hy is by die Cuyler-hospitaal in Uitenhage opgeneem, waar sy bloed getrek is vir verdere toetse. Die diagnose was bakteriële meningitis veroorsaak deur die bakterie Listeria monocytogenes.” Kupelo sê die pasiënt is eers ’n maand later uit die hospitaal ontslaan. Volgens ’n verslag deur die Nasionale Instituut vir Oordraagbare Siektes is dié siekte se simptome baie soos griepsimptome.

New direction for world’s oldest River Mile NELSON Mandela Bay’s historic River Mile event will be undergoing some significant changes next year in the build up to the event’s centenary celebrations in 2024. The Metro hosts one of the world’s oldest open water swimming events which was established in Redhouse in 1924 as a means for

the local swimming club to attract swimmers from “town”. Now in its 94th year, the River Mile festival will undergo change as the organisers shake things up and start to build on the event’s popularity in the build up to its 100th race. The River Mile was forced to move from Redhouse in 2010 owing to deteriorating water quality of the Swartkops River and currently takes place at the tranquil village of Cannonville on the Sundays River which offers an ideal festival area at the well maintained slipway area.

Anticipated to attract over 5,000 visitors from around the country, the 2018 River Mile Festival of events will include a 5km Family Fun Run, a NMB Triathlon sanctioned long and short course off-road triathlon for individuals and teams, kids across the river races, a disabled Mile, wetsuit Mile and the traditional Men’s and Ladies Mile events. )Online registration for the events is now open on the website www.rivermile.co.za -REPORTER

Be aware of hijackings at shopping centres

Previous research conducted over the festive season shows clear spikes in crime during December, including hijacking. While the reason for this can only be assumed, you can take definite action to try to protect yourselves and your families from finding yourselves in this very dangerous position. “As the year draws to a close, let’s end it off on a positive note. Be careful not to drop your guard as you enjoy the holiday season,” says Eugene Herbert from MasterDrive. Hence MasterDrive gave some simple tips on how to protect yourself from possible dangerous hijacking situations. Reverse parking Shopping centres are one of the areas where crime levels increase drastically. December is also the time when people spend more time at shopping centres. The managing director of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert explains, “If you find yourself at a shopping centre in the coming weeks find a parking space against a wall. Then reverse your car into the parking space. “When you return to your car you can offload your purchases while keeping an eye open for potential threats. The wall at your back also prevents someone from surprising you from behind.” Practice Children are also more likely to be travelling with you during December. “While none of us wants to con-

sider being hijacked with our children, the reality is that we should. “Before you find yourself in this situation, teach your children where to sit in the car and what to do if it does happen. “Agree on a keyword which will mobilise car occupants into action. Remember a car is replaceable but a life isn’t. Your primary objective should be to get yourself and your family out of the car as quickly and safely as possible.” Don’t stop in your driveway You need to be stationary to be hijacked. While it may seem rather redundant to say so, coming to a complete standstill is something many drivers still do. “Hijackers need you to be stationary which is why you should never pull into your driveway until the gate is open. Instead, wait in the road parallel to your driveway, ready to go at any moment, while the gate opens. “Where possible you should also try to avoid stopping completely at intersections. If conditions allow, anticipate traffic light changes and drive slowly up to the intersection to avoid stopping at all. “Remember, however, these techniques can only be effective if you are aware of your surroundings and spot a potential threat before it reaches your window,” says Herbert. You do not need to be afraid to step out of the house, but you do need to be ready should you become the target of criminals.
