This was presented at a mayoral committee meeting by corporate services executive director Vuyo Zitumane, who said the new system would cut the time of sorting through applications to at least one month. Currently, the standard operating procedure stipulates that the application process should be concluded within three months. However, owing to the influx of applications for each vacancy, the municipality has had to contend with sifting through tons of applications, with about 85% of these coming from unqualified applicants. With the new digital application system, applicants will apply online and if the candidate does not meet the minimum requirements, the system will immediately send a SMS notification to inform the applicant of this. If one meets the requirements, the system will send the applicant an automated One Time password to his or her cellphone which has to be inserted to verify the person’s legitimacy.

Crèche’s fence targeted by vandals HEILIE COMBRINCK

crèche in Gerald Smith has been the victim of ongoing vandalism. An urgent appeal is made to the neighbouring community to help take care of this crèche and to speak up if they know who the culprits are. “Our fence has been targeted by thieves

since August 2015. But this year alone, we had to replace sections of the fence four times,” said Lagenay Theron, principal of Mickey Mouse, the only registered crèche in the area. “We don’t have money to keep replacing the fence. The crèche belongs to those whose kids are schooled here. Fees are minimal, thus the crèche is dependent on four fund-raising efforts that we held each year.” In the latest incident Mickey Mouse had to replace 30 metres of the fence after it was stolen. The total cost of replacing sections of the stolen fence have added up to about R8 000. “This is money that should have been invested in educating our children.”

According to Theron people living in the area have seen the culprits busy stealing the fence, but it seems that they are afraid to act. “We would appreciate it if the police can be more visible in this area. Criminal activities definitely are on the increase here,” said Theron. Although the school building is secure and equipped with an alarm system, thieves have also targeted the playground and stole some of the apparatus. At the back of the school building there is a vegetable garden to provide fresh produce for soup or meals at the crèche. “The garden has also been vandalised before. I really do not know why one would find joy in doing that. It is food. We provide our own fresh produce in preparing soup at the school,” said Theron. According to Theron she would really like the residents of Gerald Smith to take pride in, and care, of the crèche.

“I wish to thank the parents and others like Patrick Lindoor who support Mickey Mouse. This is the foundation phase of each child’s future education. It needs to be protected by the community, not vandalised! Buy-a-brick project “We asked for a quotation for the secure green fencing. It will cost R499 000. This is money we will never be able to raise.” Theron said in an effort to have the children and crèche property protected it was decided rather to have a buy-a-brick project. This is with the aim to have the fence replaced by a brick wall. Apparently 1 300 bricks will be needed. Now Mickey Mouse wished for the public to support the crèche with the buy-a-brick project. Met ons besoek aan haar huis was Nadia juis besig om Beulagh se derde resepteboek klaar te tik. “Ja,” sê Beulagh, “my Kombuisvriende strek oor die hele wêreld… Holland, Amerika, Despatch…” Maar nou eers terug na die Spar-kompetisie . Sy en die twee ander finaliste moes op daardie betrokke dag in Despatch Superspar gaan kook. Dit kan nogal intimiderend wees om voor ander te kook, maar Beulagh was ontspanne. “Ek dink dis omdat ek party Saterdae my botteltjies ingelegde disse daar verkoop en ook omdat sommige dae net gaan kuier met die mense in die Spar wanneer ek geselskap opsoek.” Die disse wat aan haar die eerste prys besorg het, is haar mikrogolf Kentucky soos sy dit noem, ingelegde pasta en kerrie pynappel met feta-kaas, in die vorm van harte gesny, bo-op dit. Paul Barnes, eienaar van die Despatch Superspar, sê die resepte van Beulagh se wendisse gaan nou in Spar se nasionale resepteboek opgeneem word. “Dit was regtig n goeie idee van Spar om só ‘n kookkompetisie aan te bied waar deelnemers in die winkel moet kom kook. The Uitenhage Lions Club appeals to local business and the general public to please support the Uitenhage SPCA in the sponsoring of kennels. Lions are totally committed to animal welfare in the community and have for the past 10 years been part of the sponsoring kennels initiative. The Uitenhage SPCA is a non-government funded welfare organisation responsible for their own funding to meet their mandate in taking care of many unwanted, unclaimed stray and injured animals in not only Nelson Mandela Bay, but also beyond its borders. But we worked as a team and it went very well. We motivated the community to assist in cleaning up and to be proud of the community where they live. Bird flu at local poultry producer The first case of Bird Flu was detected in Uitenhage at Sovereign Foods, which is one of the major poultry producers in Africa. In a media statement issued last Thursday, Sovereign Foods announced that it had detected avian influenza (AI) at a single layer house on a farm that forms part of the company’s broader Uitenhage operations. According to the statement, approximately 5 000 birds have been culled, which represent approximately 1% of Uiten-

hage’s production pipeline. Sovereign Foods’ management is currently taking the appropriate steps and following the prescribed protocols to prevent AI from spreading to other farms. The Hartbeespoort operation in Gauteng remains unaffected. Whilst being the 4th largest producer in South Africa, Sovereign Foods is still firmly tied to its local roots in the Eastern Cape and is proud to be one of the biggest financial and social contributors to the region.

Hobby turns into largest pet warehouse Despatch now is home to the largest pet warehouse in the Eastern Cape with the grand opening of the “new” Kraaines on Saturday morning. Owner Danie Bothma has been in the pet industry for the past 22 years. He started his business as a hobby in a double garage and through the years continuously expanded. With the latest move to a large premises in the main street of Despatch, Kraaines will occupy 800m². This meant that Danie and his wife Christelle were able to further extend their pet species available at the pet warehouse, resulting in the business being the largest of its kind in the Eastern Cape. Kraaines is home to a vast variety of pets which include all kinds of birds from indigenous to exotic, a vast selection of fish, cold water and tropical, which can be viewed in 235 tanks. There is a rodent section and Kraaines will now also host a reptile section. Apart from the pet section, Kraaines offers all kinds of pet assessories, toys, clothing and cages. There is an extended section of pet foods where one can also buy pet supplements, vitamins and medicine. In addition Kraaines has extended its trading days and will from now on also be open on each first and last Sunday of the month (10:00-13:00). Lions support pediatric cancer awareness campaigns Lions International President, Dr. Narish Aggarwal has identified the awareness of pediatric cancer as one of the major centennial projects for the Lions. “As part of the international childhood cancer awareness month campaigns, the Uitenhage Lions Club invited CHOC (acronym for Children’s Haematology Oncology Clinics) to provide them with a presentation on the nature of the services they offer parents of children who suffer from all varieties of cancer or life- threatening blood disorders,” said Uitenhage Lions Club president, Hein de Vrey. Anne-Marie Stephenson said CHOC was established in 1979 by a parent group and is registered as a non-profit organisation. Their aim is to provide a fully integrated support

programme to alleviate as much stress and strain as possible, ensuring that both the children and their families maintain an optimistic outlook that is so crucial to a positive outcome. This service is essential in assisting the estimated 1 in 600 children in South Africa affected by cancer before the age of 16. One of the children who have benefited from CHOC is Brendon Oberholzer (11) of Sonop Laerskool in Despatch. Brendon will be attending the Luister!FM beauty pageant gala evening as the proud ambassador for CHOC. RECIPE: BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS

Perfect start to your National Braai Day REPORTER ANTICIPATION is once again in the air in the lead up to National Braai Day, which takes place annually on September 24. The National Braai Tour is currently taking the country by storm, celebrating the uniquely South African tradition, until September 16. September 24 also happens to be Heritage Day, making it the perfect day for South Africans to celebrate the country’s rich history through the tradition of lighting a fire, inviting a few friends over and shaking off the day’s stress. The man behind the National Braai Day initiative, Jan Braai, has prepared a few mouth-watering recipes to get the South African spirit going. “This recipe is pretty self-explanatory and I trust that even the casual observer will clearly see how great it is by simply reading through it. You make a very high-quality relish in your potjie on the fire and then you bake or poach some eggs in hollows in the relish. Simple as that. “The only ingredient that could be mildly challenging is cabanossi, which is similar to droëwors, and can be found at butcheries throughout South Africa. Failing that, just use salami or chorizo.” Breakfast of Champions

Feeds 4 to 6 Ingredients:

2 tots of olive oil 200g cabanossi sliced into small pieces

1 red onion, sliced 1 red pepper, sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper or chilli powder 1 tsp paprika 1 punnet cherry tomatoes, halved (about 250g) 1 tub feta cheese (200g, Danish style works best) 6 jumbo eggs Salt and freshly ground pepper A handful of basil leaves (chopped or torn into smaller pieces) Slices of bread

Method:

) In your no. 10 flat-bottomed potjie, heat the oil and fry the cabanossi, onion and pepper for a few minutes. You want the cabanossi to sweat and release a good aroma and the onion to soften. ) Add the garlic, cayenne pepper and paprika and let it fry for another minute. ) Add the tomatoes and mix it all together. Let it simmer covered with the lid, for about 10 minutes so that all the flavours can socialise and get to know each other. ) Crumble all of the feta evenly into the potjie on top of the tomato mixture. ) Now use your wooden spoon and make six dents or hollows in the relish, big enough for an egg. Break an egg into each hole, taking care not to break the egg yolks. ) Season with salt and pepper and close the lid. Leave to cook for about six minutes on flames or coals. The relish needs to bubble as that will cook the eggs. The meal is ready when the egg whites are mostly cooked and the yellow is still mostly soft. There is no harm in lifting the lid and peeking inside the potjie to see when this is done.

Brandwag atleet ryg prestasies tree-vir-tree in ’n Jong Brandwag atleet is vinnig besig om tree-vir-tree prestasies in te ryg! Amber Rayners is 15 jaar oud en staan nie hoog in haar skoene nie, maar haar prestasies ryk ver. Tydens die onlangse Suid-Afrikaanse Landloopkampioenskap in Potchefstroom is sy op o.16vlak 4de in die land geplaas. Atletiek SuidAfrika het haar aangewys as een van die top 8 o.18 middelafstandatlete in die land. Sy spesialiseer in 1500m en 3000m in atletiek, en 4km in landloop. Amber is vir beide die 2015-2016 en die 2016-2017 seisoen as die Oostelike Provinsie Junior Atleet van die jaar aangewys. Sy het die OP en die Oos-Kaap in 2016 en 2017 onderskeidelik in vier SA Kampioenskappe per jaar verteenwoordig. In 2017 sluit dit in SA Hoërskole in Durban en die SA Junior Kampioenskap in Kaapstad

asook die S.A. Junior Landloop Kampioenskap op Potchefstroom en die S.A. Skole Landloopkampioenskap op Kimberley. In Kaapstad was sy 6de in die finaal van die 3000m met ’n tyd van 10:37. Sy is die OosKaap kampioen in dié item. Sy het ook ’n goeie 4:51 in die 1500m by SA’s aangeteken. In elke wedloop waaraan sy deelgeneem het, het sy ’n beter tyd opgestel as van te vore. Vanjaar het Amber ook ’n tweede plek behaal in die taai Houtkapper Trail Run by Knysna se Oesterfees en binne 40 minute klaargemaak in die 10km Spar Vrouewedloop.

New EP Media newspaper for Cradock and surrounds REPORTER MEDIA24, publisher of Die Burger, will soon publish a free local newspaper for the Cradock, Middelburg and surrounding areas to bring fresh local news to the communities of this area every week. According to Tasmia Ismail, general manager of Die Burger in the Eastern Cape and EP Media, the first issue of the Mid-Karoo Express newspaper will be published on Thursday, October 5. It is just a day before the start of the popular Fish River Canoe Marathon in Cradock. “A total of 12 000 copies of the Mid-Karoo Express will be distributed every Thursday in towns such as Cradock, Middelburg, Somerset East, Cookhouse, Bedford, Adelaide and Fort Beaufort,” said Ismail. “These are free newspapers and give people in the area the opportunity to read all their local news. EP Media already brings eight very successful local newspapers to the people of the Eastern Cape. “Two of the newspapers, PE Express and UD Express, are 34 and 46 years old, respectively. Two brand new newspapers were also launched in Queenstown and King William’s Town since February last year, and they have been well received in those communities. “The Cradock and Middelburg area is the only area in the Eastern Cape where Media24 has not yet published a free local newspaper. The interest we have already received from advertisers is a good indication that there is a great need for such a newspaper for the community, “Ismail said. According to the newspaper’s editor, Bettie Giliomee, Mid-Karoo Express will not only be a source of local news for the community, but will also bring good-quality reading material

free to people who are not always able to pay for reading material. The Mid-Karoo Express editorial content will include school, municipal, entertainment, sport and motoring news. nooi. Julian Horne, een van die klub se stigterslede, is vir beide die Metro sowel as OP-span vir veterane gekies. Dié spanne gaan in Oktober aan ’n veterane-toernooi deelneem. Horne sowel as Snyman is onder die top 200 tafeltennisspelers van Suid-Afrika. Die tafeltennis-klub spog ook met twee junior spelers, Brandon Mirams en Leander van Staden wat aan die nasionale Callies-toernooi deelgeneem het en baie goed gevaar het. “Ons hoop om meer juniors betrokke te kry.
