Riebeek to rock at Rock The Hage IT will be rock n roll at Riebeek this weekend as the school is hosting the annual Rock The Hage concert in association with the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. Making this event special for the band, Daytrippers, is that they celebrate 50 years playing together with the original members. The Daytrippers, Poltergeist (with musicians from the UK and Australia), Riaan Vogel and the Riebeek College Band will perform on both nights. Friday’s performances include Anton Calitz, a teacher at Riebeek College who will perform with the Silver Horse Band, and Tank (an international act who had hits in the 1970s). Saturday’s performances will include Bedlam, Axyl, Beanie Rebels and In the Mix. The Riebeek band was established with funds donated by Kim Clement and Rock The Hage, with the aim to buy music equipment for the schools. This eclectic group of young rockers and stunning performers will dazzle with their stage presence and distinctive sound. “We are excited to be extending a warm Riebeek welcome to the music lovers of the Metro. We hope to see many of our Old Girls join us for an informal reunion and we are grateful to our parents and Rotary

Mayor encourages children to visit libraries Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Athol Trollip officially launched the Library Week by reading stories to learners and interacting with visually impaired residents at the Elukhanyisweni Municipal Library in KwaNobuhle. The Executive Mayor has called on parents to encourage their children to make use of the

municipal libraries across the metropole. Elukhanyisweni Library is one of three municipal libraries that have facilities for the visually challenged. The Mayor has committed to mobilise resources to improve to facilities and build more libraries in areas where there is none. He also called on the residents to protect libraries from criminals activities.

If you’re reckless on the road - do it alone MORE traffic is expected on the roads in the coming weeks as families from across the country prepare to enjoy the Easter holidays. Schools close for the Easter break on 28 March and reopen on 10 April. Easter Weekend begins on 30 March (Good Friday) and ends on 2 April (Family Day). The Automobile Association (AA) message to drivers this year is different from the past. This year they’d like to urge all reckless drivers to leave their families at home. And, if you’re a reckless driver who operates for profit, consider driving alone as well. All reckless drivers should drive on empty roads, preferably on closed circuits, of which there are many for hire in the country. In this way you’ll only cause harm to yourself, and not anyone else in the vehicle with you. It has become apparent that many hundreds of thousands of drivers in South Africa

obey the rules of the road, operate their vehicles safely, and look out for other road users. These drivers should be praised for playing their role in ensuring road safety on South African roads. But, unfortunately, there are always those who spoil it for everyone else. There is a certain section of our road-using public who simply don’t care about others, are only concerned about how quickly they can get to their destination, and who seem to think the rules of the road don’t apply to them. It’s these road users we need to single out as the reason for our horrific road fatality statistics. Adjust your attitude when on the road this Easter. Understand that many people have a right to be on the road, and who all want to reach their destinations safely. Apart from obeying the rules of the road, all road users – motorists, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedes-

trians – need to respect each other, and each other’s right to use the roads. It’s important for all road users to: •Respect the rules of the road •Ensure your car or motorbike is mechanically sound •Ensure all tyres (including spares) are in good condition •Ensure everyone in the car is buckled-up (or in approved child restraints) •Obey the speed limit (and to drive according to the conditions of the road) •Wear a helmet •Make themselves visible if they are walking •Don’t drink and drive, or drink and walk •Take a break every 200kms or every two hours to stretch legs and get some fresh air •Pay attention to the road Using the road comes with an obligation to

Unless we collectively aim to be better road users we will never achieve our goal of reducing the country’s road fatality numbers, and we will leave a terrible legacy for the next generation of road users. ‘Verdubbel liefde’ hupstoot vir Mula

=’n Plaaslike sakeman se “verdubbel liefde” veldtog het gesorg vir groot dankbaarheid by die Mula herwinningsprojek op Uitenhage. Kenneth Botha van OK Mini Market het ’n trollie by die ingang gelaat waar kliënte nie-bederfbare kosse kon skenk. Aan die einde van die veldtog het Botha die inhoud van die trollie verdubbel en besluit om dit aan die Mula-projek te gee. Anske se ma, Denise le Roux het gesê verlede week was ‘n besonderse emosionele week vir haar en haar man JG. “Vir my is dit moeilik, ek moet nou weer leer om te ontspan, om nie vir alles te keer nie, om nie ‘n oorbeskermende moederhen te wees nie. Ek moet leer om weer asem te haal en my eie mens te wees. My kind is gesond en sy leef! “Woorde wat ons gedra en wat ons ontvang het is: Geloof, Hoop, Liefde, Dankbaarheid en Gebed.” Denise sê Anske het die einde van haar behandeling maklik gevat, “want vir haar is dit fun, geen meer pille of medisyne nie.” Anske is die dag voor haar 5de verjaardag met leukemie gediagnoseer. Sy is kort daarna per spesiale vliegtuig na die Rooi Kruishospitaal in Wynberg, Kaapstad vir haar kankerbehandeling. Op Anske se Facebook-blad het Denise gesê dat hulle vir Anske gesê het dat hulle vir haar die grootste partytjie moontlik gaan hou wanneer sy klaar is met behandeling. En so was dit ook. Vir twee weke het Denise 1 320 kolwyntjies gebak vir dié viering van lewe! “Dit was my manier om afskeidneem. Ek het gehuil en gelag en gedink en gebid terwyl ek hulle bak. Hijacker arrested at accident scene POLICE officials on patrol in Despatch acted swiftly upon receiving information about an accident and arrested a 22-yearold male at the scene for being in possession of a suspected hijacked motor vehicle. The incident happened last Sunday at 18:40 after a grey VW Polo went through a fence and into a house in Tobile Busakwe Street, Khayamnandi. As police officials arrived on the scene, information was circulated by the 10111 Centre of the same brand and colour vehicle involved in the accident, being hijacked earlier in Gwali Street, KwaNobuhle.

“Police investigations revealed that the vehicle was indeed the hijacked vehicle and arrested the 22-year-old male driver on the scene. The vehicle was handed in at the Uitenhage Vehicle Crime Identification Unit for further investigations,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart. The 22-year-old suspect appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges ranging from possession of suspected stolen property and reckless and negligent driving. “Fortunately no one was injured during the accident,” said Captain Swart. -HEILIE COMBRINCK

Agri EC calls for calm over proposed EWC EASTERN Cape farmers’ organisation Agri Eastern Cape has urged members not to panic over the chances of a Zimbabwe-styled land-grab happening to them, saying South Africa’s Constitution is strong enough to withstand the proposed policy changes. With more than 4 000 farms already in the government’s hands and awaiting redistribution to new owners, numerous scenarios need to be played out before the recently proposed Expropriation Without Compensation (EWC) policy has any impact on the country – if, indeed, it ever comes into effect. This is according to Agri EC president Doug Stern, who pointed out that the major stumbling block to EWC is the Constitution, which protects the rights of all landowners in the country. “Land grabs are not a fait accompli, no matter what anyone says to the contrary,” said Stern. “The Constitution cannot be amended on a political whim. It is a lengthy and arduous process, which would take years to achieve,” he said, adding that vote garnering ahead of next year’s general elections had much to do

with the issue being brought to the fore. Perfect platform to garner votes “We have an election looming. It has to be borne in mind that the issue, while certainly

contentious, is actually the perfect political platform from which to garner votes. Stern also pointed out that, at this stage, all that is in place is a policy document which still requires public input. Furthermore, the International Human Rights Commission will be watching developments closely, especially in view of the fact that governments cannot simply take away the right to own land. “Even in the unlikely event that it did become reality, have the politicians given any thought to what would happen to the land once expropriated? “To whom would it be given? Who would be responsible for the debt owed on any given piece of land or farm? “As it is, the state is sitting with around 4 000 farms in its possession which are unproductive – the question is why more farms are needed. This unproductive land could certainly be put to use.” Stern also said that the economic impact of “taking” land would be catastrophic, as has been pointed out by numerous economists. “Food and employment security would be

dealt a bitter blow and, as a consequence, the poor would be worst affected by the outcome of such an irresponsible act,” he said. Very successful black commercial farmers Something else that Stern said had to be taken into consideration was the fact that there were enough examples of very successful black commercial farmers who attained land through the free market system. “With the assistance of organised agriculture and the private sector, the government needs to be convinced that there are models that will work to successfully advance the State’s land reform programme,” he said. “I want to appeal to fellow farmers not to panic and do anything irresponsible. Please look at all the positives surrounding you, such as comparatively low interest rates, and leave this one possible negative matter for elected representatives to deal with on your behalf. “Farmers must carry on doing what they do best – that is to produce food for our country, while enjoying your farming. Bay SMEs graduate from enterprise programme FIFTEEN small businesses, drawn from across the Nelson Mandela Metro, recently graduated from a six-month Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC)/Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber (NMBBC) enterprise development programme which has attracted R1 052 million in funding from the ECDC in the last four phases. Besides receiving a certificate during the graduation ceremony, graduates will receive a year’s free membership of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber.

This entitles them to participate in the Business Chamber’s events, such as coffee mornings, business breakfasts and various workshops, including soft skills training. They will also be promoted through the Business Chamber platforms. A total of 64 businesses from the metro have gone through the programme since its inception in the 2014/15 financial year. In the first year of the programme, 31 enterprises participated in the programme. The programme was rolled out over a pe-

riod of six months wherein enterprises were equipped in areas that included leadership, marketing and financial management. The training is conducted and assessed by the Nelson Mandela University Business School. NMBBC operations manager Prince Matonsi said the Business Chamber is thrilled about the Enterprise Development Programme graduation ceremony of the fourth phase. “As the Business Chamber, we would like

ing 24-17 gewen nadat hulle rustyd 19-12 voor was. Die Argentynse voorspelers het besonder goed in die skrums en rolmaalbewegings gevaar, maar kon nie al die gate toestop teen

Nanaga bike race to suit all levels of fitness This year sees the staging of the fifth annual Nanaga MTB Race, organised by local events company Free Spirit Adventures to be held on April 22nd and it will include 4 distances to suit all levels of fitness and expertise. Choose from 50km, 30km, the 15km route for beginners, and the 5km fun ride. The routes cover some stunning private farmland which has been made available specially for this event. The race has grown significantly

over the years, with over 700 riders entering the race in 2017, making it one of the biggest mountain bike events in the Eastern Cape. This rise in popularity is largely due to the feedback from riders about the stunning routes, with magnificent views and some fast-flowing single track sections. The race takes place at the popular Nanaga Farm Stall and there will be live entertainment, stalls, a kiddies play area, and refreshments on sale.

The Nanaga MTB Race is an event that likes to give back. The race initially came about specifically as a fundraiser for beneficiary: the Sunshine Coast Charity Trust.
