n this drought, if there is a green spot on a verge, the chances are fairly good that it will be a water leak.

Nelson Mandela Bay is experiencing the worst drought ever and drinking water supplies are running out fast. In the midst of this crisis, the Metro’s crumbling infrastructure adds to the crisis with almost half of its water produced being lost through water leaks. A mid-term municipal report for the 2017/ 18 financial year showed that the Metro lost 45% of its water supply in the five months up to November 2017. The situation regarding water leaks is the same across the Metropole. Residents from Despatch are desperate, as to them it seems that their efforts in reporting water leaks are ignored. Many of the leaks have been reported as far back as 2016 and have not been repaired. Theo Senekal, Chairperson of Ward 52 in Despatch said, “Maintenance was not one of the key priorities of the previous municipal governance. Now we are sitting with an enormous problem. “It seems to me that there definitely also is some kind of go-slow or ignorance when it comes to the repairing of water leaks. “I have been a resident of Despatch for the past 43 years, and have never experienced so many water problems. Last Monday I reported 17 water leaks in Despatch. I can assure you, contractors are operating all over town to try to solve problems, but it seems that water pipes keep on bursting and these are the main priority repairs.” In Kruis Street, Daleview, which is part of Ward 41, one of the residents, Jan Afrikaner, said he definitely had enough of reporting water leaks and blocked storm water drains. “Look at this water leak in Kruis Street which was reported two years ago. I tell you these are thousands of litres, if not millions of litres of water that the municipality loses daily. “It breaks my heart to see the drought on the one side and on the other side seeing this water running into the drain,” said Afrikaner. he water crisis in the Eastern Cape is deepening as dam levels across the province drop drastically, with Nelson Mandela Bay metropole and numerous towns at risk of running out of water. The Kouga Municipality has already indicated that at least two towns, Hankey and Patensie, face water shedding, while the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is considering further punitive water restrictions. The combined dam capacity of the Algoa water supply system, which supplies the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and surrounds, has dropped to its lowest ever level of just 25.6%, dropping 0.7% in a week. The largest dam of the Algoa water supply system is the Kouga dam, which has dropped to a mere 7.9% of its total capacity. This is the lowest level ever recorded for the dam, which is the key supply dam for the Kouga Municipality and surrounding farmers. Last year this time, it was 44.6% full. Nothing on Day Zero yet The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said nothing has been confirmed yet around Day Zero - the day the dams run dry. In a statement last month, the municipality said current water consumption could see the city’s dams run dry by August, while the SA Weather Service was forecasting significant rains only in October. This would leave the metro dependent on the Nooitgedacht scheme, which supplies about half of the city’s water. The scheme sources water from the Gariep Dam, through the Sundays River Valley. “There are serious discussions within infrastructure and engineering led by mayoral committee member, Councillor Masixolo Zinto, in relation to the current dam levels and the implications they bring,” said municipal spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki. Losing water: Failing infrastructure In the midst of the crisis, failing infrastructure across the metro is adding to the munici-

pality’s woes, with almost half of the water produced being lost. A mid-term report for the 2017/18 financial year, compiled by the municipality, showed that the metro lost 45% of its water supply in the five months to November last year. This includes water supplied but not paid for, such as water bill write-offs over the basic free allocation to assistance to the poor residents. The municipality tabled a R1.6bn 10-year plan last year to bring water losses, then recorded at 38%, down to 20%. It also aimed to have physical water losses through leaks, recorded at 30%, brought down to 15% - the upper limit of international best practice. Towns exceed allocated quotas Kouga Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen said the towns of Hankey and Patensie had just about used up their water quotas for the financial year, ending in June. “The latest readings in December indicated that Hankey had only 9% of its quota left and Patensie 36%,” she said. Hankey and Patensie both receive their bulk raw water from the Gamtoos government water scheme, which is administered by the Gamtoos Irrigation Board. The scheme includes the Kouga Dam and the downstream canal system. Alternative water solutions sought Van Lingen said the Kouga Municipality was working around the clock, trying to secure more water sources for its residents. “Three new boreholes were drilled at Oyster Bay. The yield, at about two litres per second, is low, but this assisted the town in coping with the holiday influx,” she said. The town has two existing boreholes and a spring and does not rely on Nelson Mandela Bay-controlled dams for supply. Van Lingen said they were drilling two new boreholes in Jeffreys Bay while one was being rehabilitated. She said the municipality was also investigating desalination as an option to solve the water crisis facing Kouga, and would be appointing a consultant shortly to assist.

Rare ghost frog found at Cockscomb mountain F

orest plantations are threatening one of the oldest creatures on the planet, but there is hope for the ghost frog also known as the Spookpadda. The discovery of a fifth limited population of the Hewitts ghost frog in the Cockscomb mountains has seen their International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) sta-

tus drop from Critically Endangered to Endangered. But it is still at serious risk of disappearing, leaving no room for complacency. Amphibians face the threat of extinction more than most other species of animal or plant, which is even more jarring when one learns how long they have been here. The

ghost frog is a perfect example, first emerging 160 million years ago - 10 million years before even birds took flight. Forest plantations are established in green belts that favour tree crops, making forestry companies the custodians to South Africa’s natural heritage. In 1988, distinct colonies of these rare animals were found across South Africa. They are under real danger of disappearing owing to the conditions caused by logging. Until 2009, ghost frog colonies were found in just four perennial rivers - the Geelhoutboom, Martins, Kleinrivier and Diepkloof - that weave through the Elandsberg Mountain Range in the Eastern Cape. The recent discovery of a fifth colony in the Cockscomb Mountains has significantly improved the ghost frog’s odds for survival. MTO Group CEO Lawrence Polkinghorne made the company’s environmental goals clear when he said: “MTO remains committed to finding ways to minimise our impact on the environment. We continue to monitor our actions and will as far as possible adapt our practices where able to improve habitats of keystone species.” In 1999 MTO commissioned and funded several studies to establish the health and situation of these ghost frog colonies. Since then it has evolved a set of practices that minimize the impact on the frogs and boost their numbers.

Metro condemns listeriosis claims REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) has issued a media statement saying its tap water is safe to drink after allegations in the social media that its tap water is one of the causes of the outbreak of the listeriosis disease in Nelson Mandela Bay. “The municipality’s drinking water preparation and distribution comply with South African National Standards 241,” the statement read. The NMBM condemned individuals who have been spreading “inaccurate and irresponsible information about this serious issue through social media”. “This misinformation has not only caused panic across the city, but has also led to undue pressure on our Service Delivery Call Centre, which we use to deal with water leaks, among others. “As correctly communicated by the Department of Health, people are requested to adhere to the strictest hygienic living conditions

during this time.” The World Health Organisation recently said the listeria outbreak in South Africa, with about 750 confirmed cases, is believed to be the largest ever outbreak of the bacterial disease listeriosis. As of January 17, it had been confirmed that nine people in the Nelson Mandela Bay had contracted the disease. Listeriosis is generally found in water, produce (fruits and vegetables), soil, milk and ready-to-eat products. Though Nelson Mandela Bay’s tap water has been declared safe, residents have been urged to continue to use precautionary measures to prevent infections. These methods include boiling water before drinking, not allowing babies to play in the sand and washing off all food. In particular, babies, pregnant women, elderly folks and people with compromised immune systems are at risk. The symptoms of listeriosis include nausea, diarrhoea and infections of the blood and brain.

There will be more artists than ever on the main stage during the festival which runs from June 29th to July 1st. Dit is nou die Amarok 3.0 TDI V6 Extreme, enig in sy soort in die Suid-Afrikaanse bakkiemark. Die kragtigste, mees luukse, veelsydigste en vinnigste dubbelkajuit. Van die Baai tot in Diaz se kaai en anderkant uit op kronkelpaaie deur Botelierskop. Dié einste ekstra perde jaag die spoedmeter gou tot diep duskant groot moeilikheid met spoedkameras. Stil & sterk ratwisseling Nog ‘n pluimpie vir dié Amarok wat in Argentinië vervaardig word, is die opsie om die ratkas te kombineer met die permanente 4Motion all wheel drive. Sy eerste rat is sterk en bring veral gemoedsrus op die benoude steil kronkel-berggrondpaaie se open afdraendes. As die Amarok se veldrit-skakelaar geaktiveer word, hou hy sy ratoorskakeling slim berekend terug.
