PHOTO:HEILIE COMBRINCK THE highly successful Uitenhage Lions Club Winter Jersey campaign now in its 12th year, was celebrated with handing over knitted jerseys to primary schools Ankervas, Susannah Fourie and St Joseph’s. The jerseys was handed to the various head prefects of these schools at the Drostdy Museum in Uitenhage. It is now for the respective schools to distribute them to learners in need.

The Drostdy building was erected in 1809 and is the oldest building in Uitenhage. Over the years the building was used as a railway institute by 1923 and was finally opened as the Drostdy Museum and a national monument by April 1981. This Uitenhage historical museum gives insight into the history of the town and its surrounding districts. One of the major attrac-

tions is the exhibition of the Republic of South Africa’s country symbols. This includes the national flag, coat of arms, the motto, national anthem and natural symbols which tell its story and play a crucial role in building pride and a sense of belonging. )School groups are welcome to book for lessons based on these symbols by contacting the Drostdy Museum on 041 992 2063.

Most visitors ever to Addo elephant park FOR the first time in the Park’s 87-year history, in excess of 300 000 visitors passed through Addo Elephant National Park’s gates during the previous financial year. According to Fayroush Ludick, SANParks Regional Manager: Communications, a total of 305 510 guests were tallied between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2018. This represents an increase of 15% on the same period in 2016/17 with 265 585 guests to the Park. “Slightly over half of these were international tourists – 158 162 (52%), with 146 091 South Africans (47%) while 1 257 visitors from SADC countries made up the minority. Dissected into day/overnight visitors, 82% or 250 232 were day visitors, while the remaining 18%, or 55 278 were overnight guests,” says Ludick. The majority of South African visitors to Addo originated from the Eastern Cape – 101 374 which represents 69% of the total, followed by 21% or 30 448 from the Western Cape. Germany, Netherlands and United Kingdom were the Park’s top three overseas markets, which represented 87 146 (55%), 15 391 (10%) and 8 361 (5%) of the international mar-

ket respectively. Park Manager, Nick de Goede says, “Not only does it tell us that the Park is a destination of choice for so many people, but that confidence both in the area and in the country is also picking up. “Our staff work exceptionally hard all year round to ensure that all our visitors receive excellent customer service. They do so under extreme conditions at times, as catering to the needs of all these people is no mean feat”. “By putting best practices in place on the conservation front, we are able to provide top quality game viewing and a myriad of other activities all centred on our core function of nature conservation. The number of day visitors, who made up 82% of our visitors over the past 12 months, tells us that the majority of people passing through our gates do so to enjoy the Park’s fauna and flora,” de Goede continues. There are a number of activities guests to Addo Elephant National Park, just outside Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, can participate in. These include self-drive game viewing, guided game drives, bird viewing, walks and hikes, horse trails and a 4x4 trail. For others

African music concert held at Indoor Sports Centre THE Mandela Metro School of Arts has been invited by the North-Norway branch of the Norwegian Band Federation and The Arctic University of Norway, to participate in parades and concerts to be held in the city of Tromso. According to Christina Solheim Karstad, Manager of the Norges Musikkorps Forbund, the month of May is the beginning of spring and this is a special time of the year

in Tromso. “This is the time to enjoy our polar light all night and Norway celebrates its constitution day on May 17th. Bands play an important role in the celebrations,” said Solheim Karstad. Diabetes is a condition where the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood is too high. It is a so-called “disease of lifestyle”, which means that it can be caused by the way we live. Kirkwood Wildsfees entrance fees kept caged ENTRANCE fees at the annual SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees have not been allowed to run wild, and will be the same as last year – despite a bigger and better programme, says festival director Jenni Honsbein. The festival will take place from Friday, June 29 until Sunday, July 1. Included in the entrance fee is all the live entertainment by South Africa’s favourite musicians on the giant Wildsfees stage, supervised entertainment for kids in a special child-friendly festival-within-a-festival and a full day’s demonstrations, Walking on the Wildside and other activities. “We are the only festival in South Africa with its own special kids’ festival, where the youngsters are free to go wild (under supervision) while the rest of the family enjoys the shopping and entertainment,” says Honsbein. Santa’s Secret Winter Workshop entrance fee is R10 for both the young and the young at heart. This in-

cludes a free cupcake and a gingerbread man. The young and young at heart can also meet and have their photos taken with some of their favourite TV characters. Free entertainment will be presented in four separate stages – the giant main stage, the Flavourfontein Beach Bar, the Coca-Cola Stage and the kykNET Leefstyl Plein stage. There will be more artists than ever on the main stage in 2018. Included in the galaxy of stars will be ten artists on stage on Friday, 15 on Saturday and eight on Sunday. First wheel alignment centre at Despatch The first wheel alignment and fitment centre in Despatch, S&R Automotive Suspension Specialists, recently opened its doors and invites vehicle owners of small cars to heavy duty trucks, trailers and buses to have their wheel alignment checked here! Owners Shane and Reg Palframan are seasoned in the wheel and suspension industry and are also coowners of Kouga Wheel Tech. Their father, Chris Palframan is a qualified petrol and diesel mechanic and has about 50 years of experience in the mechanical trade. Reg Palframan, who has a MBA degree in business management said, “we can fix any suspension related mechanical problem. If a car or truck is pulling to the left or right, we can set the alignment or diagnose the problem area. “If there is a noise coming from the front, we can do the diagnostics in terms of telling what exactly is

wrong and give a quote. If the customer approves, we will fix the problem.” Shane said, “Wheel alignment goes out without you even noticing it. It needs to be checked once every sixth months or once every 10 000km’s. Rather pay

R150 for wheel alignment than spending a thousand Rand plus on a tyre.” So if you are not sure whether your vehicle’s alignment is correct, take it to S&R, if no adjustment is required, the exercise will be for free. If its out, they will correct the alignment and save you money on tyre wear and fuel. United Through Sport, ’n nie-regeringsorganisasie in Port Elizabeth, bied al die afgelope 15 jaar dié bystand aan leerlinge uit minderbe-

voorregte gebiede in die streek. Nick Mould, oorspronklik van Engeland en nou permanente inwoner van Suid-Afrika, het 15 jaar gelede in sy oorbruggingsjaar na SuidAfrika gekom om kinders in minder bevoorregte gebiede sokker te leer speel. Gou het hy agtergekom dat daar ook ’n groot behoefte om bystand is op akademiese, kulturele en persoonlike ontwikkelingsvlak. Mould het plan gemaak en nooit weer teruggekeer na Engeland nie. United Through Sport SA het die lig gesien en verskeie ontwikkelingsprogramme word

in talle skole in die minder bevoorregte gebiede aangebied. Vakansiekampe word ook in dié gebiede gehou. Dit dien nie net om die kinders van die strate af te hou nie, maar ook om, nes die skoolprogramme, die beginsels van persoonlike versorging en beveiliging, die ontwikkeling van sporttalente en sosiale vaardighede, asook kulturele en kunstalente by die kinders tuis te bring. Tydens dié programme word kinders geïdentifiseer wat sporttalent én die deursettingsvermoë het om ook op ander gebiede (onder meer akademies en kultureel) te presteer. Hulle word dan in die laaste drie grade van laerskool op sport- en akademiese gebied bygestaan. Wiskundige en Engelse geletterdheid geniet veral baie aandag. Wanneer die hoërskooljare aanbreek, vind dié organisasie beurse vir die laerskoolleerlinge sodat hulle na ’n baie goeie hoërskool kan gaan, al is dit ver van hul huis. “Ons het vervoer. Die kinders word elke oggend opgelaai, na ’n uitstekende hoërskool in Port Elizabeth geneem en weer afgehaal,” sê Cindy Preller, skakelbeampte van dié Baaise organisasie, ook bekend as United Through Sport South Africa. Op hoërskool moet die kind aan minstens twee sportsoorte deelneem en die vervoer word ook daarom-

heen aangepas. Op akademiese gebied word spesiale bystandsklasse gebied. “Soms is daar groot akademiese agterstande om in te haal. En onthou, ons mikpunt is om die kinders se toewyding en prestasie op só ’n vlak te kry dat hulle verder op tersiêre vlak sal studeer,” sê Preller. Uit die 19 leerlinge wat sover op die vlak van Senior Skool van Uitmuntendheid (SSE) geslaag het, het 16 hul studie op universiteitsvlak of aan tersiêre inrigtings voortgesit. Breathtaking jumps from 4x4 ‘top trucks’ AN Extreme 4x4 Challenge will be hosted at the annual Wings and Wheels Festival which will be held at the Uitenhage Aerodrome on Saturday. A Total of 62 vehicles have entered the 4x4 Challenge, including entries from as far as Cape Town and Johannesburg. The Top Truck Class will be the highlight of the event and spectators can expect to see breathtaking jumps from these highly powered racing machines. Several other classes will also be in

action, including standard production bakkies like Ford, Isuzu and VW Amarok. The day’s activities will include arts and crafts, displays, food stalls, aircraft fly-ins and displays, classic and veteran car displays and live entertainment on stage. The Extreme 4x4 Challenge starts at 08:00. Entry fee is R80 for adults, R30 for children 6 to 12 years and under 6 free. Die uitdaging is ’n uitstappie vir families en vriende en daar is kampeerplek sowel as ’n gastehuis vir diegene wat langer in die vallei wil agterbly. Ontbyt sowel as ’n braai word aangebied op die plaas en daar is ’n kontantkroeg. Die Punt-tot-Punt 4x4 uitdaging word op Saterdag, 5 Mei gehou en die plaas is sowat 30km in die Elandsriviervallei vanaf die vulstasie by Rocklands. Tiger Wheel & Tyre Moffett on Main is betrokke by die dag se 4x4 uitdagings en daar is goeie pryse wat gewen kan word. Die uitdagings is geskik vir gewone 4x4 voertuie, maar vereis uitdagende bestuursvernuf. Gemodifiseerde klim-en-klouter-voertuie is ook welkom. Inskrywings om deel te neem aan die uitdaging is R350 per voertuig en R50 per passasier. Insrywings sluit 30 April.
