beth het op inligting gereageer en ses mans aangekeer. Hulle word aangekla van bedrog, die oortreding van die Wet op die Beheer van Tabakprodukte asook die oortreding van die Wet op Inkomstebelasting. Kapt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, polisiewoordvoerder, sê vier mans sal binnekort in die landdroshof op Uitenhage en twee in die

landdroshof in Port Elizabeth verskyn. Janse van Rensburg sê die klopjag, bekend as Operasie Peregrinus, is verlede week met die samewerking van verskeie polisieeenhede uitgevoer in ’n poging om die verspreiding van smokkelsigarette te stuit. Die polisie het op verskeie winkels toegeslaan. Daar is op net meer as R2 miljoen se

kontant beslag gelê en altesaam 1 750 bokse met sigarette is gekonfiskeer. Die straatwaarde van die sigarette word op sowat R18 miljoen geraam. “Dit is die grootste slag teen smokkelsigarette in die provinsie en die handelaars sal dit voel,” sê lt.genl. Business chamber challenges electricity tariffs I

N written objections to Nersa (the National Energy Regulator of South Africa) with regard to Eskom’s proposed electricity tariffs, the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber has appealed to Nersa to play its crucial role. The appeal is to discharge its statutory duty by ensuring that Eskom gets back on track to achieve its core objective, which is to provide electricity at affordable levels to all South Africans. According to the Business Chamber, Eskom is being plagued by mismanagement and alleged corruption leading to failures to get its operational costs and project management under control. In a media statement, the Business Chamber said that Eskom’s prices have spiralled out of control since 2008, and since then have outstripped CPI by a staggering 250%. A reduction in off take from its customers is the inevitable result. Eskom industrial users reduced their off take by 20% since 2011, the mines by 6%, and municipal off take has shrunk by about 3%. Eskom’s application requested a general increase for Eskom customers of 19.9%, effective from April 1, next year, and increases to the municipalities of 29.5%, effective from July 1, next year. the Nelson Mandela Bay’s economy. “A reliable electricity supply at competitive prices is an absolute prerequisite for a healthy industry in the Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape in general. “For this reason it is our recommendation that Eskom’s 2018/19 revenue application needs to be fundamentally reviewed before its implementation on April 1, 2018,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber electricity and energy board head MC Botha. “The financial year 2018/2019 revenue application not only raises the question whether the industry in South Africa will be able to continue sustaining itself but also whether Eskom will remain viable. “The incremental downward spiral of Eskom comes with dire consequences to this country,” Botha said. he Castle Lager Oktoberfest PE is the biggest Oktoberfest in South Africa and, according to the National Geographic Top 10 Other Oktoberfests list, one of the world’s 10 best outside Germany. Now in its 48th year of celebrating German culture, the Castle Lager Oktoberfest PE is set for four days of beer, bratwurst and big band fun hosted by the German Club, in Lorraine, from 26 to 29 October. The shout out for young and old is to come along and “Unleash your inner German”! This year’s event officially kicks off with the ever-popular corporate evening on Thursday, 26 October. The Oktoberfest Bavarian Business Bash caters for 800 to 1 000 corporate guests. Weekend festivities get going with the students’ evening on Friday 27 October at 18:00 with special discounts on presentation of valid student cards. A newly introduced special seniors’ lunch on Saturday, from 11:00 to 16:00, will ensure that all fun festival lovers are catered for.

Colchester 5km & 10km family run starting at Mackay Bridge

Scottish Day at airfield

The Colchester Development Run will take place from the Mackay Bridge Angling Club in Colchester on November 4 and families are invited to join either the 5km or 10km distance and enjoy all that Colchester, with its stunning Sundays River, has to offer. The SA 10km championships will take place in Nelspruit on the same weekend, so the top local athletes will be out of town, but it will be a great opportunity for club runners to gain points in this EPA participation league event. The Colchester Development Run will include a 10km starting at 07:00 and a 5km starting at 07:30.

The prize-giving and generous lucky draw prizes will take place at 09:00. The Gelvandale Race is proudly presented by Eastern Province Athletics in partnership with Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and their Legacy Project. Race organiser Michael Mbambani confirmed that all 5km finishers will receive a medal. Gold medals will be awarded to the first five men and women, as well as the category winners. Silver medals will be awarded to the next 150 athletes, while bronze medals will be given out to all finishers within the cut-off time for the 10km race. Both races will start and finish at Mackay

Bridge Angling Club in Colchester. The cost for the 10km run is R50. The 10km runners aged between 60 and 69 will pay R30 and runners over 70 will receive free entry. The temporary licence, required for the 10km only, is R30. Entry is R20 for the 5km family run. A Scottish Day with a performance by the Caledonian Pipe Band will be held on Sunday, October 29th at the Uitenhage Airfield. “It is a social event and we have invited various motorcycle and motor clubs to attend. There will also be some aircraft activities,” said Lourens Kruger, organiser of the event. Action starts at 10:00. There will be no entry fee and the public are invited to come and view all the vehicles and also to join in a bring and braai. Fires will be provided. Mopp Arends and Deenan Afrika participated in the EP body-building championships held in Port Elizabeth and both won their respective categories. Nicky Human and Celeste Barnardo excelled in the fitness physique category. The four athletes represented the Eastern Province in Bellville at the South African body-building championships. Arends again took top spot in the over 60 category and was the overall winner in the Master III (over 60s) category. Deenan Afrika won the U.19 body-building category and was the overall junior champion. Nicky Human and Celeste Barnado both participated in the fitness (physique) category.
