SASSA cards work beyond expiry date REPORTER

Following a number of enquiries from social grant beneficiaries in the province about the expiry of the SASSA cards, beneficiaries are reminded to keep using their current SASSA cards.

SASSA card scam: SASSA said in the media statement that they have received complaints from social grant beneficiaries about companies offering them financial service products under the pretext that they are working with, or are endorsed by SASSA. SASSA said it does not have any relationship with, nor does it endorse, any company that offers financial products such as microloans, cell-

phone airtime, insurance products including life funeral cover and clothing accounts. According to regulation, SASSA is not allowed to make any deductions from beneficiaries. The social assistance legislation stipulates that SASSA can only deduct a maximum of 10% for funeral policies. For this reason, SASSA is calling on all social grant beneficiaries to be wary of callers claiming to be SASSA officials, requesting confidential information such as identity numbers, card numbers and PIN numbers.

The SASSA card holders are advised not to divulge such confidential information over the phone, especially the PIN number, which should not under any circumstance be given to anyone else, not even to a SASSA official. Business Chamber to fight proposed electricity tariff increases REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber said in a media statement that it is extremely disappointed by the news of Eskom’s request for a 19.9% tariff increase next year. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) recently announced its intention to commence with regulatory processes in consid-

ering Eskom’s revenue application for 2018/19. The Business Chamber deems an increase of this magnitude as crippling in the current economic climate and, if implemented, it could have disastrous consequences for local business and the economy. Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber president Thomas Schaefer said a 19.9% increase would be commercially devastating in the current economic climate.

The 19.9% increase is expected to translate to a 27.5% municipal tariff adjustment on July 1, next year. “Not only will such an increase be crippling, but in view of the recent disclosures and reports regarding rampant maladministration and governance failures at Eskom, business and commerce is compelled to continue in its endeavours to hold both Eskom and the Regulator accountable for their actions, in the interest of the public,” Schaefer said. On top of the proposed 19% increase, it is feared that Eskom will also be seeking to recoup additional revenue in relation to the expired MYPD3 period (extending from 2013 – 2018) of up to R60 billion. “No decision has yet been made as to how the regulator would deal with this, but given the severe impact on members and the public if Eskom is allowed to recover the proposed tariff increases within next year’s electricity tariff

hike, the Business Chamber believes it has no option but to continue lobbying on behalf of our members on this crucial issue.” Schaefer said they are calling on all businesses, locally and nationally, to make their voices heard by submitting written comments before the set deadline of October 13. “We want to assure our members that the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber will be making robust submissions, as well as attend the public hearings in the Eastern Cape and elsewhere in the country, if required. New machines at traffic centres Applications for new driver’s licences and professional driver’s permits will now be fast tracked after the installation of three new machines in Uitenhage and eight in Korsten. “Persistent requests to the Department of Transport to deal with outdated machines at the Traffic Departments have finally paid off with the installation of these machines,” said Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security, John Best.

“The Live Capturing Units (LCUs), used to capture appointments and applications for new driver’s licences and learner’s licences, are all outdated. They will be decommissioned at both the Uitenhage and the Korsten Traffic and Licencing Centres. The old machines will be replaced with new Live Enrolment Units. “This will ultimately ensure that service delivery at our centres is improved and that long queues are a thing of the past. -Reporter

World record blood donation attempt U

The attempt to set the record will take place on Friday, October 6 from 09:00 to 18:00. The special blood drive event will be officially opened by the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Athol Trollip. Engen Penford dealer Gerrit Meyer said that they “want to go big this year and ensure that Engen Penford’s annual blood drive will make a real difference.” In order to set a new world record, a total of 150 units of blood need to be donated. “We’d love everyone to help us put Uitenhage on the map as the town donating the most units of blood in one day,” said Marthinus Greyling, the organiser of the record attempt. Walk for cancer event The very first Uitenhage Engen Penford Oracle Media Walk/Run Remember 5km for Cancer will be hosted on October 7 at 08:00 in support of Cancer Awareness month. The entry fee is R25 per member of a group more than 5 participants. “We’re aiming to have 5 000 entries. “All profits will go towards The Igazi Foundation which is based at the Provincial Hospital in Port Elizabeth.” The Igazi Foundation is nationally and internationally recognised as the champion of haematology issues in the broader struggle for better health care services in South Africa. It is the only dedicated haematological NGO in the country. According to Greyling, the objective of the walk is to create awareness regarding cancer and show the importance of donating blood. “Over the festive season, which is fast approaching, blood normally is high in demand.

Die een koor is dié van die Dalestraat Congregational kerkkoor in Uitenhage en die ander die Largo Vocal Ensemble, saamgestel uit vroue van Uitenhage, Despatch en Port Elizabeth. Vroeër die maand het die Largo Vocal Ensemble juis ’n Sondagmiddagvertoning gehou om geld vir vervoer na en verblyf in Johannesburg in te samel. Die lekkerkry straal só uit hul gesigte wanneer hulle sing, dat hul unieke klanke jou eers ’n paar sekondes later tref. En dis ook net reg dat hulle só lyk en klink wanneer hulle optree, want van hulle is dan nou juis koorafrigters en/of onderwyseresse. “Ons moet die kore leer sing, maar ons kry nie kans om self te sing nie, toe besluit ons dit is tyd om ons eie groep te stig,” sê Venita van Wyk, lid van Largo, voorsitter van die Nasco (Northern Areas School Choir Organi-

sation) kinderkoor én afrigter van die Dalestraat Congregational koor. Moet net nie vir Venita vra hoe kry sy tyd vir alles nie, want dan kry jy die “koortoespraak” en dit is onder meer dat enigiemand wat koor sing, weet hoe om vorentoe te beplan en sy of haar tyd te bestuur sodat hulle nóg meer kan sing! Daarom is dit seker nie verbasend nie om te hoor dat die Largo-lede dadelik gretig was toe Amanda Engelbrecht, koorafrigter by Westering hoërskool, verlede jaar hardop gewonder het of hulle nie hul eie koor moet stig nie. “Ons het haar toe kliphard begin druk,” sê Sonja Bezuidenhout, wat saam met Venita en Amanda die stigterslede van die Largo Vocal Ensemble is. Sonja is ’n onderwyseres en koorleier by die Blouwaterbaai gemeenskapskool. Die “lot” het op Amanda geval om Largo se koorleier te wees. Skaars was hulle aan die sing of die versoeke begin instroom vir optredes, vertel Venita. “En dít het ons laat besluit - wag, laat ons inskryf vir die streeksuitdunne vir die ATKV se Animato-koorkompetisie, kom ons wys

Maar onderkry is min, en dié twee kore het enigiets van fondsinsamelingskonserte tot die die verkope van kerrie en rys aangepak om hul reis- en verblyfonkostes te kan betaal. “Ons kon darem ook een bus vir ons twee kore huur wat die reiskoste ook verder sny,” sê Venita. En op hierdie soort positiewe noot wat al ’n kenmerk van Largo, Nasco en Dalestraat geword het, het die Nasco-lede nie dikbek gaan sit toe hulle nie die Animato-finale gehaal het nie, maar kliphard begin oefen om die botoon behoorlik met die volgende belangrike geleentheid te kan voer: “Ons het reeds ’n uitnoding gekry om volgende jaar by die wêreld koorspele in Gauteng op te tree. “En my vierjaar- plan met die kleintjies is om hulle oorsee te vat dat hulle óf in Kanada óf in Amerika kan gaan sing,” sê Venita. he Rotary Club of Uitenhage South is again hosting the local event of Rotary Family Health Days, which is a national initiative bringing a host of free health services into the community. Rotary is aware of the great need for the public to access health services which far exceed those normally on offer in clinics, so each year we take part in a major national event offering a wide range of services which far

exceed those normally available locally, and they can all be accessed free and without appointment. Various health tests The event has previously been held at the LoveLife centre in KwaNobuhle, but to make it available in a different part of town, this year it is being hosted at The Rosedale Recreation Hall in Kamesh Road. The event will run from 09:00 till 15:00 on October

3rd & 5th. Although there will be some normal clinic based services available such as immunisation, HIV testing, and contraception, there will also be breast cancer screening, pap smears and an audiologist. Lots of other information will also be available, and there are various talks which can be attended, such as rehabilitation services awareness and drug abuse awareness.

This year for the first time, there will also be a strong emphasis on She Conquers – a programme for girls and young women. Prof Zinn - first female speaker at UHPPTA gala

Veiligheidskoene geskenk aan herwinningsprojek O

Dit is dié sienswyse om ’n verskil in die samelewing te maak en terselfdertyd armoede te help verlig wat ’n maatskappy wat veiligheidskoene vervaardig, Bagshaw Footwear Company, laat besluit het om 1 000 paar skoene aan die Mula-projek te gee. Quinette Goosen, wat die Mula-projek op Uitenhage begin het in samewerking met vrywilligers uit die gemeenskap sê, “Dit is wonderlik dat Bagshaw die herwinningsprojek so goedgesind is. Ons is baie dankbaar vir dié ongelooflike bydrae.” Volgens Ronel Joubert van Bagshaw Footwear Company, is die maatskappy ook by ander gemeenskapsprojekte betrokke. Maar dit is juis Mula se hoofdoelwitte waarby Bagshaw aanklank vind naamlik om armoede te help verlig en om die omgewing skoon te maak. Goosen sê dat hulle van die skoene gaan verkoop teen billike pryse om fondse in te sa-

mel vir die projek se kosvoorraad. “Van die skoene sal Mula aan mense gee wat dit nodig het. Daar is veral groot manskoene wat lank gaan neem om base te kry,” sê Goosen. Woensdae is Mula-dae waarop kinders herwinbare plastiek en karton kan inbring om hul eie Mula’s, bereken op die gewig van hul sakke herwinbare rommel, kan verdien. Met dié Mula’s kan hulle ‘inkopies’ in die Mula-winkel doen – enigiets van speelgoed, klere, skoene, wasseep en kos. Net onder die 2 000 kinders is by die projek geregistreer en op Mula-dae daag tussen 250 en 350 kinders op met hul herwinbare produkte. In die twee jaar dat Uitenhage se projek aan die gang is, is 37 564kg se plastiek en 16 434kg karton uit die omliggende woongebiede ingesamel. Nelson Mandela University’s Vice Chancellor of Learning and Teaching, Professor Denise Zinn is UHPPTA’s (Uitenhage High Past Pupils & Teachers Association) sixth guest speaker at its annual gala event. Prof. Zinn will be the first female to Professor Denise Zinn grace an UHPPTA ga- PHOTO: MEDIA24 la evening as guest speaker. This phenomenal lady has been the executive dean at both Fort Hare and Nelson Mandela universities. She was involved in curriculum review, design and renewal, as well as the building of a transformative institutional culture in these environments. Her initial degrees were obtained at UCT where after she taught English, Mathematics and Science at Chapman and St. Thomas. She read for her Masters and Doctorate degrees at Harvard university. Her recent publications are on humanizing pedagogy and social justice and diversity in education. UHPPTA will once again be awarding bursaries to deserving learners from Uitenhage High School. In 2012 we awarded 4 bursaries to academically deserving learners to assist them with registering at a university. This venture has grown to such an extent that UHPPTA was able to assist 33 learners from the class of 2016 in 2017. t is not often that you find a school which has six pairs of twins and a set of triplets among its learners. Therefore Zanolwazi Senior Secondary School in Khayamnandi, Despatch is known in the community as the “Twins School”. Most of these learners come from households where one of the parents has passed away and where there is no income. Taking care of their educational needs is teacher Buyiswa Qundele, who acts like a godmother to these twins and triplets. “I like to ask them which one is the oldest. Every time I do this, they will look at each other first and smile, but I never get the answer. They are negatively affected by socioeconomic circumstances, but what I like about these learners is the fact that they appreciate life,” said teacher Qundele. These learners all belong to a library group which is headed by teacher Qundele. “The group was established with the aim to develop learners’ self-confidence. To groom them in order to acquire the appropriate knowledge they need, to have empathy for others and to become a valued member of the community they live in,” said Qundele. According to her it asks for a lot of patience, understanding and energy to be the godmother and face all the challenges these twins and triplets have, especially regarding educational and schooling needs. “I need to read more on the book Ityala lamawele by S.E.K. Mqhay, as it illustrates all there is to know about twins and triplets. “Unfortunately it is rare that you will find both or all three children to be strong performers. One of them normally is struggling a bit more whereas the other one will be excel-

Daar is sowat 500 items ingeskryf en die vroue van VLV Despatch was vanjaar die beoordelaars. Die kategorieë van deelname was brei, naaldwerk, hekel, konfyte, ingelegde produkte en krale en mosaiekwerk. “Dit is die mooiste items. As ’n mens in ag neem wat die ouderdom is van die deelnemers. Hulle maak die items met daardie hande vol knoppe en oë wat nie meer goed sien nie,” sê Amanda Croucamp van ACVV Aandmymering. Die oudste deelnemer aan vanjaar se uitstalling was Anna Reynierse, wat in har 98ste jaar nogsteeds fluks naaldwerk doen. Die volgende ACVV handwerkuitstalling sal volgende jaar by ACVV Najaar op Despatch aangebied word. ACVV Aandmymering was vanjaar die algehele wenners met Helpmekaar in die tweede plek en Uitenhage Ithemba Elisha in derde posisie. Huis Najaar is aangewys as die wenners in die spogtafel-afdeling met Aandmymering as naaswenners en Helpmekaar in derde plek. Van die handwerk items sal by ACVV Aandmymering se basaar te sien wees wat op Vrydag, 3 November gehou word.

mer temperatures in many parts of SA, it is not unusual to find that this has dried out and started to crumble, but fortunately it can be replaced without too much trouble or expense. “Similarly, it takes quite a lot of work but is relatively inexpensive to sand down and repaint or re-varnish older windows to make them close properly.” New windows boost property value On the other hand, he says, if your windows won’t shut tightly because the frames are bent or damaged, you will have to consider replacing them, and that could prove to be quite costly – although worth it in the long-term because of the greater energy efficiency and savings you will achieve. “What is more, window replacement may present an opportunity to give your home a facelift and boost its value.” Writing in the latest issue of the Property Signposts newsletter, Everitt says wooden window frames are a popular replacement

choice because they are strong, insulate well and have a natural appeal. Train race to U’hage THE wait is over, as the Medihelp Train Race takes place from the Port Elizabeth station to Uitenhage station this Sunday. The race starts at 09:00 and is open to sixperson relay teams. More than 150 corporate and social clubs and schools teams comprising five runners and one mountain bike cyclist are getting ready for the ultimate man versus machine relay race. The route takes runners along Swartkops Road past Sydenham Station through Deal Party and into Swartkops before the 10km MTB leg through Redhouse to Perseverance Station. The final two legs will see the runners going through Azalia Park, Despatch and on to Uitenhage Station where the winning teams and train are expected around 10:50. Mountain Gorilla is not what you would traditionally associate with Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) but when the Rwanda Development Board selected VWSA as a name giver for one of their newborn gorillas, VWSA gladly accepted. It is an immense honour to be asked to name one of these majestic animals. Individuals or companies are selected to name a baby gorilla based on their conservation involvement either in Rwanda or in their own countries. Volkswagen’s commitment to conservation in South Africa and especially the protection of the endangered Rhino population was taken into consideration when they were chosen. Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director, Volkswagen Group South Africa and Dr. Andrew Muir the CEO of Wilderness Foundation Africa on September 1st attended the naming ceremony in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. “Volkswagen understands that the natural environment in which we operate needs to be preserved and that is why we are so passionate about our involvement with Wilderness Foundation Africa,” said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director: Volkswagen Group South Africa. “Our long history with Wilderness Foundation Africa meant that for me it was an easy decision to accept this honour of naming a gorilla.” The Rwanda Conservation Officials that work with these animals take the naming of the gorillas very seriously and choose names that suit the animal’s personality.
