mass ride totalling 44km through the streets of Uitenhage, with the aim to show unity in the fight against crime, was supported by various major role players in the safety and security sector.
“The reception was phenomenal. It was absolutely heartwarming to see the public’s support,” said Pat Unsworth, chairperson of the Uitenhage Community Policing Forum. The mass ride was the initiative of the Uitenhage CPF, sector patrollers and Strelitzia Park Neighbourhood Watch. They were joined by the local police, traffic department, emergency services, fire brigade, private security companies and the motorcycle fraternity. “We need, as a community to stand up against what is wrong. Criminals should know they are not welcome in our communities,” said Unsworth. “The mass ride is a show of strength in numbers with the aim to encourage communities to mobilize themselves. “Festive season is upon us and we all, every resident, should be more observant, vigilant and prepared not to become a victim of crime,” said Unsworth. The more residents get involved in their own areas through joining a neighbourhood watch or the community policing forum the better. Residents are the eyes and ears of where they live. It is now, like never before, time to stand together against what is wrong in our communities.

228 Years behind bars for rapist
Rapist Mzikayise Mkavu (27) has subsequently been removed from society. The efforts of a dedicated team of police investigators were rewarded when Mkavu was sentenced effectively to 228 years’ imprisonment. Mkavu terrorised women in KwaNobuhle between 13 July 2008 and 2016 and raped several victims between the ages of 16 and 31years. He was linked to the rape charges through his DNA and arrested during April 2016. “Violence committed against women and children is in the forefront of our fight against crime and offenders can expect that police investigators will pursue every avenue to ensure their conviction,” said Captain Gerda Swart, police spokesperson of the Uitenhage Cluster. The relentless efforts by members of the Provincial Family Violence, Child Protection
and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) together with the criminal justice system, proved to be effective, when Mkavu was sentenced in the Port Elizabeth High Court on 17 cases of rape, 10 for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, 8 charges of robbery with aggravated circumstances and 1 charge of attempted murder. Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lt General Liziwe Ntshinga said: “SAPS has the responsibility to protect the vulnerable in society and these responsibilities are taken very seriously through thorough investigations. “Sentences such as this will send a strong message to potential rapists and we trust that the lengthy sentence will serve as a deterrent to criminals preying on our women and children who are not in a position to defend themselves”. Goodyear completes R1 billion tyre facility Goodyear South Africa is set to launch its state-of-the-art tyre production facility in Uitenhage next Tuesday, November 7th. The R1 billion manufacturing facility employed the use of technology in order to meet the strong and growing market demand of high value-added (HVA) consumer tyres in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. The new technology and accompanying comprehensive employee training are to improve the plant’s capability and capacity to produce low rolling resistance tyres that promote fuel economy in vehicles. This to meet the growing demand from vehicle manufacturers and the replacement market, as well as meet the increase in market requirements for HVA 4X4 SUV tyres. The tyre market in South Africa and SubSaharan Africa is expected to experience double-digit growth through 2020 led by the consumer segment. “These changes are an integral part of our overall approach to align production capability and capacity with market demand, decrease complexity and reduce costs in our manufacturing operations,” said Jean-Jacques Wiroth, Managing Director, Goodyear South Africa. “Our aim is to create a sustainable and competitive business over the long term that benefits our employees, customers, and ultimately the Uitenhage community at large.”

Trio busted in Despatch with 139 bundles of khat Eager to reduce the levels of serious crime by targeting crime generators such as drugs, members of the Despatch and KwaNobuhle police stations acted swiftly last Tuesday (October 24th) when they received valuable information about a vehicle allegedly transporting drugs. “Police members noticed the vehicle at about 12:10 travelling in Butise Nontshinga
Street, Khayamnandi, Despatch and pulled the vehicle off the road. The vehicle was searched and members discovered 139 bundles of khat wrapped in plastic bags,” said Captain Gerda Swart, Uitenhage Cluster: police spokesperson. The three males (all in their 30s) were arrested on the spot and detained on a charge of illegal dealing in drugs.
Uitenhage deputy Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll lauded the members for the good work and said, “The police remain committed in their quest to rid the streets of illegal drugs. “I encourage our community to supply the police with information about anyone who may have illegal drugs and firearms in his/ her possession”.

Assistance to people with hearing impairment A new organisation has been established that seeks to bring the joy of hearing to people with severe hearing impairments in the Eastern Cape. Joy of Hearing was officially launched on Friday, October 13th with the aim of assisting children and adults in the Eastern Cape with serious hearing impairment who are unable to cover the cost of a cochlear implant. They will also create awareness of the challenges of hearing impaired people and act as advocates for the hearing impaired. “There are many children and adults in the Eastern Cape who have severe-to-profound hearing loss, which can have a devastating ef-
fect on them and their families, but because of financial constraints do not have access to cochlear implant technology,” explained Dr Eben Nel, who is one of the directors. Nel is joined on the board by Loftie Fourie and Dr Jeff Govender. “Cochlear implants provide the opportunity to restore hearing or provide hearing for the first time to these individuals and gives them the confidence to live a full and productive life,” said Dr Nel. The cost of having the procedure, as well as the maintenance of the apparatus, put the procedure out of reach for most. According to Dr Nel, the organisation had

Nel said children who received a cochlear implant before the age of 2 and adults who lost their hearing at some stage showed the best results. Movie night at U’hage SPCA Tomorrow night it is time for the Uitenhage SPCA’s popular movie night under the stars featuring the real-life story Oddball, which is about a beloved tail-wagger. An eccentric chicken farmer, with the help of his granddaughter, trains the mischievous dog Oddball, to protect a penguin sanctuary from fox attacks. Calling families to enjoy the run The Colchester Development Run will take place from the Mackay Bridge Angling Club in Colchester on Saturday. Families are invited to join either the 5km or 10km distance and enjoy all that Colchester, with its stunning Sundays River, has to offer. The Colchester Run will be a great opportunity for club runners to gain points in this EPA participation league event. The event will include a 10km starting at 07:00 and a 5km starting at 07:30, while the prize-giving and generous lucky draw prizes will take place at 09:00. The Colchester Development Run is proudly presented by Eastern Province Athletics in partnership with NMB Municipality and their Legacy Project. Race organiser, Michael Mbambani, confirmed that all 5km finishers will receive a medal. Gold medals will be awarded to the first five men and women as well as the category winners.
Silver medals will be awarded to the next 150 athletes, while bronze medals will be given to all finishers within the cut-off time for the 10km race. Both races start and finish at Mackay Bridge Angling Club in Colchester. Participants are encouraged to drive towards Colchester, cross the bridge at Sundays River, then turn right. Turn right again and follow directions to the Mackay Bridge Angling Club. The cost for 10km run is R50, 10km runners, aged between 60 and 69 years, will pay R30. The 10km runners over 70 years will receive free entry. The temporary licence, required for the 10km only, is R30. It costs R20 to enter the 5km family run. Golf day to raise funds for school kombi Uitenhage High School will be hosting its annual Golf Day on Saturday, November 11th at the Uitenhage Golf Club. Since its inception in 2014, the Uitenhage High Annual Golf Day has grown in stature and this, the 4th golf day, promises to be no exception. “As with previous occasions, the school would like to express its sincere gratitude to all stakeholders in Uitenhage High School who have supported the institution over the years,” said Sheldon Vermaak, organiser of the event. The golf day serves as another opportunity for businesses and individuals to get involved and contribute to the benefit of the community. “Funds generated from the event will go towards the purchase of a school kombi which will be used for academic, cultural and sporting excursions,” said Vermaak. On the day of the event, participants will start play from 07:00 onwards and will continue throughout the day. There will be music and entertainment at the clubhouse and
breakfast and lunch can be bought. Participants will each receive a goodie bag whilst refreshments will be served by Uitenhage High staff members during play at the waterholes on the golf course. All forms of organisations (companies, churches, clubs, etc.) can enter the competition at only R800 per fourball (group of four players). All contestants will receive goodie bags and there will be a prize-giving ceremony at the completion of play, as well as a raffle draw. Prizes for this year’s event include a braai stand, food and meat vouchers, a travel bag, electrical tools and appliances, a weekend away and many more! Uitenhage’s rugby pride, Progress RFC, will host its 25th annual presentation evening on Saturday at the Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre. “Progress’ success was so phenomenal that many of this year’s celebratory events had to make way for the club’s participation in SARU’s great nation tournament, the Gold Cup,” said Rodney Joseph, Progress RFC general secretary. Many of the Progress players and administrators of yesteryear will be in attendance. Jeff du Preez, a founding member of the club will be the guest speaker. “It was a great honour for the club to have
been part of the national Gold Cup for a third time. Who can forget the 2006 upset of Maties? And during 2010 again reaching the second round? This year we were the Kings’ regional champions beating both Border (Old Selbornians) and SWD (Progress George),” said Joseph. The theme for the event is appropriately named “An Evening Amongst Stars”. Who will be the 2017 Progress Star? Will it be Moya, Lights, Jones, Gustav Meyer or Sonabo Majola? The event will start at 18:00 and those interested in attending need to make a R150 contribution to be part of the enjoyment.
