fter days and days of wearing the Riebeek College uniforms, for many girls since Grade 4 when they started at this school, the day finally arrived for wearing them for the last time!
After the matrics completed their final exam paper, English Home Language Paper 3, the girls put on slippers, takkies or walked barefoot as they handed over their 63 pairs of school shoes to charity.
Mrs Kieran Stear, principal of Riebeek College said, “We are immensely touched by the generosity of the matrics who willingly gave their school shoes to charity. Also for donating food for our workers’ thank you hampers.
“They were full of excitement about finishing exams and starting a new chapter in their lives and we wish them only the best!” And, so, the Class of 2017, was done with school and the start of something new began.

Matric exams progressed smoothly and ‘glitch-free’ THANDI SETOKOE

S the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations concluded this week, the Eastern Cape Department of Education said operations progressed smoothly without any glitches. This week, learners across the country sat for their last exams for English (home language), agricultural management practices and design, among others. Education spokesperson, Malibongwe Mtima said no irregularities were reported. “We have had an incident-free examination. No major incidents took place, which means the learners heeded to our call,” said Mtima.
He said the programmes introduced by the Department of Education in preparation for the examinations were of great assistance to the learners. “We provided the learners with previous examination papers, as well as extra supplementary hybrid material, to top up the conventional textbooks.” Mtima added that counselling was also offered to both the learners and parents, while learners were also given documents to sign which stated what would happen in the case of exam irregularities. “The learners were well aware that should they be found guilty of any irregularities, such as copying, they would be subjected to all the penalties involved – which include a
three-year suspension from writing examinations.” Mtima said provisions had been made for the learners who do not receive favourable outcomes. “The department has various tailor-made programmes for matrics which include the second chance matric programme. Learners who have failed more than two subjects are also requested to apply for supplementary examinations, which will be written early next year. “We appeal to the learners to grab these opportunities so that they can obtain their matric certificates,” Mtima said. He said marking would commence at 17 identified marking centres shortly, adding
that the department had enlisted the services of more than 5 000 markers to mark the scripts. Appealing for calm and rationality irrespective of the outcomes of the exams, Mtima said, “as the department we are hoping that the learners will produce better results this year. “We want to wish our matrics all the best and hope that they will be accepted at their desired tertiary institutions so that they can pursue their studies,” said Mtima. )The announcement of the pass mark for the class of 2017 will be conducted by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga on January 4, 2018, and on January 5th learners will thereafter be able to access their results at their schools or examination centres.
Local businesses team up to prepare matrics for job market W
hile the matric class of 2017 anxiously awaits the release of their final NSC examination results, local businesses have already teamed up to boost the job prospects of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro’s 2018 matriculants and unemployed youth. Plans were unveiled last week for the 19th edition of the country’s largest career guidance initiative, the Working World Exhibition, which will take place from April 18 to April 20, next year, at the Feather Market Centre. Organised by Inkanyezi Events, with the endorsement of the Department of Education and Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, the exhibition provides world-class career guidance textbooks, resources and personal career guidance counselling for up to 20 000 Grade 12 learners who attend the expo for free every year. While career guidance workbooks, which are approved by the Department of Education
for use as part of the Grade 12 Life Orientation curriculum, are distributed to local Grade 12s at the beginning of the year, the initiative culminates in an exhibition attended by up to 100 exhibiting institutions, including corporates, and by 15 000 visiting matrics. Inkanyezi CEO Andrew Binning said employers like the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Coega, Volkswagen, Woodlands Dairy, Specsavers, SA Police Services and The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) would exhibit alongside a spectrum of public and private educational institutions. These include NMU, Rhodes University, Varsity College, East Cape Midlands College, ETA College, Damelin College, Newton College, MSC Business College, Total Concept Beauty Academy and the Pearson Institute of Higher Education. The exhibition is open from 8:30am to 3pm every day. Entry is free to members of the pub-
lic and school groups, though they are required to book specific time slots to visit. According to the South African Government News Agency, a total of 802 636 candidates, 634 527 of whom are full-time, wrote the 2017 NSC final exams. A total of 44 911 markers around the country will mark scripts at 144 marking centres.

Eyewitnesses sought after biker dies
Police: search for woman’s relatives
Detectives from SAPS Uitenhage are investigating a case of culpable homicide, following a fatal accident involving a Mercedes truck and a motorcyclist on the R333, (Cuyler Manor Road) on Monday, 27 November at about 15:30. It is alleged that the truck and the motorcyclist were travelling in opposite directions when the accident occurred. Police are seeking the assistance of eyewitnesses, who might be able to shed more light on the investigation. The male motorcyclist from Despatch, Kursten Anderhold (55), passed on during the accident. Anyone with information that can assist with the investigation, are requested to contact the investigating officer, Detective W/O Leon Barnard on 084 697 9483, or SAPS Uitenhage 041 996 3438.
The South African Police Service in Uitenhage are seeking the assistance of the community to help locate the relatives of Andiswa Mcopele (photo). She was admitted to the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital after she fell ill on Wednesday, 25 October 2017 and has been in the hospital ever since. he support of the inaugural 24 hour cycling ride, Let’s Live For Jayde, held in Uitenhage to commemorate the late Jayde Inggs’ 32nd birthday on Wednesday, November 22 was absolutely amazing. “It’s a week down the line and I am still on a high. It was sad, but the most special cycling ride I’ve ever done,” said Johan Oosthuizen from Fuel on Wheels, organiser of the mass cycling marathon ride. “The windy conditions made it tough, very tough. But the appreciation from the Inggs family towards the initiative and the support from my family, the public, businesses and fellow cyclists pulled us through. At one stage we were joined by 89 cyclists.”

Oosthuizen cycled 296km in the 24 hour time span and Zirk Kemp did 335km. “This will definitely be an annual event. I owe this to the Inggs family whom I respect immensely. It was an absolute honour doing the last lap, the victory lap, alongside Jayde’s dad, Derrick Inggs,” said Oosthuizen. He also wishes to thank Steven Laas from Penford Cycling Shop. “Can you believe it, Steven kept his shop in Graaff Reinet Road open till midnight to assist cyclists with whatever cycling trouble they had. He fixed 25 bikes free of charge and sold one bike. Where will you see something like that?” said Oosthuizen. Apart from commemorating Jayde, the event was also in aid of the Uitenhage SPCA which is in dire financial need.

He said that the Let’s Live For Jayde banner in Aalwyn Drive has become like a memorial. “People drive past and will hoot, or bikers will give that extra rev. It shows that Jayde will be remembered. That is why I will continue with the Let’s Live For Jayde initiative. We need to bring positive change. People want it. “Thank you to all who supported this commemorative event. Plenty of holiday fun and game drives for kids at Addo Staff at Addo Elephant National Park are adding the finer details to their plans for this year’s December school holiday programme, taking place from 4 to 14 December. On each of these days at 09:00, youngsters between the ages of 5 and 13 years will be treated to a special guided game drive to explore all the Park has to offer. They’ll get up close to the Addo ellies, the first inhabitants of the Park and all the other animals which now call Addo home. They will hear all about the Big Five and even the smaller creatures of the Park, like the famous flightless dung beetle. The drives can accommodate a minimum of five and a maximum of 22 children, at a cost of only R60 per children. Parents need to en-

The Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technology Centre has once gain put together a holiday programme for children between the ages of 6 and 14 years, through a variety of stem workshops and activities. According to Zukiswa Mabope-Jacobs from the Centre, the programme is aimed at inspiring and encouraging children with knowledge of stem base principles. “Bring your kids to join in as we really explore science in all its hands-on, fun, messy and much more exciting scientific principles,” said Mabope-Jacobs. Space is limitied, so visit the Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technology Centre in Lower Drostdy Street, Uitenhage, to see the detailed programme and to book your child’s inclusion in educational holiday fun. he Uitenhage Golf Club is in dire need and VW Market Square in a joint venture assisted them by sponsoring a brand new VW Take up! with the aim to raise much needed funds through a raffle competition. “There will be a limited number of 1 200 tickets only at the price of R250 per ticket. So, participants have a jolly good chance of winning,” said André Rossouw, president of the Uitenhage Golf Club. According to Tracy Weise, dealer principal of VW Market Square, they will have a display at Baywest Mall on 9 & 10 December and at Walmer Park on 15 & 16 December in promot-
ing the competition. “The value of the VW Take up! is R170 000. Additionally the dealership will be giving a service plan with the car. It does not come standard with a service plan, but we are throwing in a 3 year 45 000km service plan. So the winner will not only get the car but also a very good deal when it comes to the service plan,” said Weise. “Once the schools open early January 2018, we also want to get them involved with the competition. There will be incentives for selling the most tickets,” said Rossouw. Tickets are available from VW Market Square or at the Uitenhage Golf Club bar or Pro Shop. The competition closes on 16 February 2018 where-after the draw will take place!

30th annual two-day Uitenhage Carnival which attracted more than 38 000 people last weekend. The celebration took place in Caledon and Market Streets, which were closed to motorists. Uitenhage Rotary Club member and Street Carnival organiser, Greg Adams, said one of the highlights was on Friday when Cape
Town teenager, Paxton Fielies, the Idols SA 2017 winner, took to the stage. “It was her first performance after being crowned Idols winner and she broke into tears when she was warmly welcomed by the crowds,” said Adams. According to him, the carnival has opened up opportunities for local artists to showcase their talents.
