Local dealership sets milestone

t is four in a row and the fifth time in six years that Algoa Toyota Uitenhage was awarded the best small dealership at the annual Toyota South Africa awards evening held recently at Durban International Convention Centre.

“This is a first for Toyota South Africa, where the same small dealership has won the Pyramid of Excellence award for four consecutive years,” said Calvin Parry, Dealer Principal at Algoa Toyota Uitenhage. “It very much is thanks to our customers and the public. Without their support it will not have been possible to achieve this milestone.

“It all is about relationships. We’ve adapted to a new frame of mind, treating our customers as guests. Considering the time you spend at your work, it is your second home. At home you will offer visitors a cup of coffee, chat and when they leave you walk your guests to their car ... it is exactly the same thing here,” said Parry. The Toyota Dealer Awards are based on a comprehensive set of metrics on which each dealer is measured throughout the preceding year. These measurements include customer service, environmental protection, financial performance and vehicle sales. In addition to good relationships, Parry has also encouraged all Algoa Toyota staff members to embrace the Best in Town programme. Algoa Toyota was selected as one of twenty

Toyota dealerships countrywide to be part of this programme. “We look at every function in the business and want to be the best in the town. For example if it comes to coffee, we want to serve the best in Uitenhage, our floors must be the cleanest, and so the list goes on and on. “This is not compared to other dealerships in town, but to be the best of all kinds of businesses in Uitenhage! “It is a matter of Kaizen, a Japanese word for continuous improvement. No matter what you do or how good you are, you can always improve. “The awards are nice to win, but it all is about the reaction that a customer had that you can see and feel. About the thank you, the appreciative Whatsapp messages, the smile

on a face when a customer leaves the dealership, that is what makes a difference in a day’s job,” said Parry. Awards Calvin Parry received the Toyota Pyramid of Excellence award for Algoa Toyota being the top small dealership of the year; Conrad van Rooyen won the Best New Vehicle Department (small dealership) and Myan Maistry won the Best Service Department (small dealership). Dewald Oelofse was the runnerup in the Used Vehicle Department (small dealership). As part of the winning prizes Algoa Toyota Uitenhage’s Parry and his wife will be treated in the Serengeti, whilst Van Rooyen and Maistry will be jetted off to Bali whilst Oelofse will be heading to Zanzibar.

Metro awarded for outstanding grant spending The outstanding 2016/2017 grant spending performance of the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Coalition Government has contributed in the Metro receiving millions. According to Kristoff Adelbert, NMB Chief of Staff, the NMB coalition government is delighted that its exceptional performance in utilising 100% of their Urban Settlement Development Grant (USDG) has resulted in them being rewarded with a R178 million windfall.

“The new National Treasury policy of punishing under-expenditure of grant funding and rewarding compliant and prudent utilisation thereof is a move that incentivises municipalities to focus spending on underdeveloped communities,” said Adelbert. “This is an endorsement of the excellent work done by this coalition government since coming into office in August 2016. THE police have taken a suspect into custody after he allegedly tried to remove roof tiles from a house in Uitenhage, in an attempt to gain access to the property. Fidelity ADT armed response officer Adrian Adams was deployed to investigate an alarm activation in Caledon Street recently. The owner of the property wasn’t at home at the time when the officer arrived at the address in question. “Our officer called for backup before he continued with his perimeter inspection. It was at this point that he noticed two suspects fleeing from the back of the property,” says Ryan Britz, Port Elizabeth branch manager for Fidelity ADT. EC dam levels still a serious concern DAM levels in most parts of the country have shown a considerable increase recently, with the exception of the Eastern Cape. According to the Spokesperson for the Department of Water and Sanitation, Sputnik Ratau, the water levels report published by the department last week, the Eastern Cape recorded a meagre 0.1% increase, moving from 66.6% the previous week to 66.7% last week. “This is a clear sign that the province is facing serious drought and dam levels could even drop more drastically due to the changing of seasons. The Algoa Water System, which is serving the major dams in the Nelson Mandela Metro,

Impofu Dam is at 38.5% capacity, Kouga Dam is battling a lot and is at 10.9% and Loerie is the only dam with 100.3% last week. The department has appealed to residents of Nelson Mandela Bay and Sarah Baartman municipalities to continue saving water during this period of drought. BUSINESS HANDS OUT EASTER TREATS

=Hot cross buns have been baked since the 12th century as a treat in celebrating Easter. The buns are marked with a cross pastry which symbolises the crucifixion of Christ. Easter falls on the first Sunday following the full moon on or after the March (autumnal) equinox - when the sun crosses the equator and when night and day are of equal length - which was the date of Passover. On this date the southern hemisphere starts to tilt away from the sun, signalling the start of autumn or fall. Ouers se toestemming nodig vir siektetoetse

R28

Poor gravel roads - Agri SA go to court Agri Eastern Cape has launched an application in the Supreme Court requesting the Court to compel the Government to fulfil its obligations to maintain and repair the gravel roads which service the rural areas of our Province. “We are also requesting the Court to oblige the government to refund the money which numerous farmers have been

forced to spend in keeping various Provincial Roads passable, and to outline the respective rights and duties of the parties in cases of this nature, said Ernest Pringle, Agri Eastern Cape president. “We have, over many years, attempted to find amicable solutions to this problem, and have now been forced to resort to stronger measures. - REPORTER

NMU: crucial research on Marion Island NELSON Mandela University’s long-term research on King penguins at Marion Island formed part of an international study which predicts that 70% of the sub-Antarctic seabirds could disappear by 2100, as a result of climate change. The study found that warmer sea temperatures are shifting King penguins’ main food sources further south and, unless the penguins move too, they could starve. “More than 70% of the world’s King penguin population form breeding colonies on Crozet, Kerguelen and Marion Island, said Nelson Mandela University zoology senior lecturer Dr Pierre Pistorius, one of the coauthors of a paper on the study, which has been published in the prestigious journal Nature Climate Change. Pistorius, who heads the Marine Apex Predator Research Unit (MAPRU) at Nelson Mandela University, said King penguins rely on the Antarctic Polar Front – an upwelling front in the Southern Ocean, where cold Antarctic and warmer sub-Antarctic water meet, churning up nutrients and attracting enormous amounts of fish – as their main food source. In the breeding season, parents leave their chicks to swim 350km to 500km to the front, returning days later with food for their young. But warmer seas are shifting the front further south – and the study predicts that the penguins will have to swim more than 700km, the maximum distance they can travel to find food without compromising the survival of their chicks, due to their own increased energy expenditure. The possible starvation of their chicks could lead to huge population crashes. “The front moves from year to year depending on the temperature of the ocean – and we have already seen impacts in King penguin

numbers in the years it has shifted further away from the breeding sites, said Pistorius. The study says King penguins could save themselves by moving to other islands further south, except they have strict habitat requirements, so a new home might be hard to find. To form a colony where they can mate, lay eggs and rear chicks over a year, they need tolerable temperatures all year round, no sea ice around the island, relatively smooth beaches – and a food source close by to feed their young. The Polar regions are feeling the impact of climate change the most – and the Southern Ocean is also subject to commercial fishing. Study co-author and co-supervisor Dr Celine Le Bohec, from the University of Strasbourg in France said, “if we want to save anything, proactive and efficient conservation efforts but, above all, coordinated global action against global warming should start now. - REPORTER

Exhilarating exotics aim at Hillclimb glory In its quest to deliver the ultimate automotive showcase, this year’s Jaguar Simola Hillclimb, scheduled for 3-6 May in Knysna, has raised the bar in the Road Car and Supercar category, which is now dominated by a range of illustrious high-performance car brands. “Our objective is to refresh the line-up for the Hillclimb to provide an exceptional experience for the spectators and competitors,” says Geoff Goddard, the event’s sporting director. The classes catering for standard production, road-legal vehicles have been narrowed for the ninth edition of the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb, with the previous four-cylinder and six-cylinder naturally aspirated categories A1, A2 and A5 being dropped owing to a lack of suitable applications.

Therefore, starting off with Class A3 for six-cylinder turbocharged or supercharged two-wheel drive vehicles, a formidable benchmark has been established with the rapid Noble M400 of Feroz Ebrahim, along with the highly-rated 375 kW Alfa Romeo Guilia QV, driven by Piet Potgieter. As the reigning Road Car and Supercar King of the Hill champion and current record-holder with a time of 43.955 seconds, Reghard Roets will be back to eagerly defend his title in the only Nissan GT-R competing this year in Class A4. “I really enjoyed my first outing at the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb last year, and it was fantastic to win the King of the Hill title,” Roets said. “It’s an amazing event that is extremely competitive, and it’s certainly no walk in

the park as there are a lot of serious cars and drivers out there. “What the Hillclimb lacks in distance it certainly makes up for in intensity, and blasting through the 1.9 km course in just 43 seconds takes serious focus and commitment.” With Class A5 falling away, next up are the normally aspirated V8-powered machines in A6, including a Ferrari 458 driven by Garth Mackintosh. Class A7 will be the biggest and most fiercely contested category, with an almighty battle set to ensue between two of the biggest names in American V8 muscle. Ford Performance Centre’s supercharged Roush Ford Mustang will be going head-tohead against rival Shelby South Africa with its Mustang Super Snake.

Nelson Mandela Bay is deemed as the economic driving force of the Eastern Cape as it continues to boast being the successful host of the only annual Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championships in Africa, making this year their 14th year as hosts. The participants have increased greatly from when it started within the hundreds to now reaching over 2000 athletes, with 40% reportedly from out of South Africa. A thriving sector sought after during the days nearing IRONMAN is the tourism and hospitality section. Some athletes and spectators who come from abroad usually arrive in Port Elizabeth a couple of days or weeks before the actual race begins, which gives a boost to the Bay’s hospitality industry. The additional exploration of Nelson Mandela Bay’s rich culture, wildlife as well as other tourist attraction activities or sites also draw profit to the tourism industry as well. Reflecting in proximity to the benefits of the triathlon within the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay rather than the general economic impact at large, the annual Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship has had an effect as well. The Siyaphambili Triathlon Participation development programme renders in assisting athletes who come from previously disadvantaged backgrounds with training and being ready and part of the Triathlon. The IRON-

MAN 4 the Kids Charity Trust, which is a nonprofit organisation also supports by raising funds every year that are contributed to the trust which assists less fortunate children. The annual triathlon has also inspired residents to partake or to also contentedly attend as fans and spot favourites, like Odwa Tshambu (22) a resident of Port Elizabeth who is passionate about rugby and sports in general. “It’s big. It’s really big. People from all over attend this event and at times there are big names as well like John Smit who was once the captain of The Springboks who I know has attended a couple of times. IRONMAN truly makes Port Elizabeth trend because there is usually great hype surrounding it” he comments. In September 2017, Port Elizabeth was selected as the host city for the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship which is the biggest IRONMAN 70.3 event, set to generate a lot of revenue, which will therefore boost the economy of Nelson Mandela Bay once again. This event will take place later on in the year and is expected to attract a lot more people than what the annual Standard Bank IRONNMAN African Championship usually receives, in return, heightening the economy with not only the Metro but with neighbouring municipalities as well especially when it comes to hospitality. The World Championship will surely place Port Elizabeth on the map on a global scale and give international recognition for further future investments.

Local surfers on winning waves at VW surfing

KAI Woolf of Jeffreys Bay was the standout performer in the Volkswagen Nelson Mandela Bay Surf Pro presented by Billabong in Port Elizabeth over the Easter weekend, clinching both the women’s and junior women’s titles. Another surfer from Jeffreys Bay, Dillon Hendricks, captured the junior men’s crown while David van Zyl (Glenashley) won the men’s event. This was the first of 13 events on the 2018 World Surf League (WSL) Africa regional tour. The Volkswagen Nelson Mandela Bay Surf Pro featured Qualifying Series (QS) events for men and women alongside Junior Qualifying Series (JQS) events for men and women aged 18-and-under. The WSL has been championing the world’s best surfing since 1976, annually running in excess of 180 global events. Woolf (16) was unbeatable in the beach break conditions, winning every heat she contested in both events while racking up double digit heat scores with her impressive repertoire of high performance manoeuvres. In the QS 1 000 women’s event, she defeated reigning WSL Africa champion Nicole Pallet

Volkswagen South Africa was proud to bring surfing fans the first event in the 2018 City Surf Series, the Volkswagen Nelson Mandela Bay Surf Pro presented by Billabong, as well as the final event in the series, the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing, coming back to Port Elizabeth in June. Volkswagen South Africa’s remains committed to the City Surf Series first and foremost because of their passion to help drive local surfing and surfers forward. The “People’s Car” with a long-

standing history in the surfing culture believe in the opportunity the series presents to local surfers, giving them the chance to score accredited World Surfing League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) points, the log that leads to a spot on the WSL’s Championship Tour. Critical ocean awareness message Amidst cheering on local surfers and displaying the best in surf ready vehicles - such as the Volkswagen California Beach camper van, Caravelle and Transporter

Crew Bus – Volkswagen was also out to drive a critical ocean awareness message. Together with their longstanding partners, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT), VWSA set up a giant Recycled Plastic Surf Wave for spectators to pose with to highlight the ocean’s plastic waste crisis. Other activities included a kids’ “Trash to Treasure” craft section, a Clean-the-Beach activity and a plastic awareness talk at the Learn to Surf Initiative with Surfing South Africa.

(La Lucia) in the one-on-one final. Earlier Woolf was equally dominating in the four-person JQS 1 000 women’s final. She again posted her best scores early in the encounter, beating the 2017 WSL Africa junior women’s champ, Sophie Bell (Salt Rock). Van Zyl justified his top seeding for the QS 1 500 men’s event in the Bay and was in a class of his own, averaging heat scores of 13.56 (out of 20) during his first event of the year. Ranked No. 67 on the QS at the end of 2017, and No. 2 on the WSL Africa leaderboard, van Zyl in the final opened his account against Adin Masencamp (Strand). He surfed with power and flow to consistently add to his total in the testing conditions and eventually pocketed the R40 000 winner’s cheque and 1 500 precious ranking points. The Volkswagen Nelson Mandela Bay Surf Pro, which is also the first of five events on the 2018 City Surf Series, enjoyed great conditions for Saturday and Sunday before experiencing four seasons in eight hours on the final day. Alongside the red hot surfing action, Surfing South Africa ran activities designed to foster and encourage surfing among young people, regardless of their background.
