Your blood is needed to set new world record

he Guinness World Record attempt for donating the most units of blood in one day by a town, is what is happening at Engen Penford in Uitenhage tomorrow. The special blood drive event will take place tomorrow from 09:00 till 18:00 and it will be officially opened by Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Athol Trollip. Engen Penford dealer Gerrit Meyer said that they “want to go big and ensure that Engen Penford’s annual blood drive will make a real difference.” In order to set a new world record, a total of 150 units of blood need to be donated. “We’d love everyone to help us put Uitenhage on the map as the town donating the most units of blood in one day,” said Marthinus Greyling, organiser of the event. 5km WalkRunRemember for Cancer

The very first Oracle FM Walk-RunRemember 5km for Cancer will be held at 08:00 on Saturday, October 7th starting and finishing at Engen Penford Convenience Centre. Draughts tournament in U’hage to uplift budding talent THANDI SETOKOE AS a means of empowering and uplifting budding talent, Port Elizabeth-based draughts champion Melikhaya Nonyukela will host a draughts tournament this weekend. The tournament will commence in Uitenhage on Saturday and conclude in the Zwide Stadium hall on Sunday. Draughts or checkers is a strategy board game for two players, which involves diagonal moves of uniform game pieces and mandatory captures by jumping over your opponent’s pieces. Nonyukela, who was introduced to the game by his uncle and grandfather during his formative years in the small town of Peddie, said his love for the game began at the early age of eight. “At the time I did not take the game seriously as I was very young and just played for the fun of it. It was only when I moved to Port Elizabeth and introduced to great players like Xolisani Pram and Ray Rubu that my love for the game really developed,” he said.

Last year the 43-year-old was crowned the Eastern Cape champion at the Eastern Cape Draughts Association Trials tournament in King William’s Town. The tournament featured teams from East London, King William’s Town, Grahamstown, Mthatha and various other cities and towns around the province. He was also recently (July 21 to August 7) selected to represent South Africa at the World International Draughts competition held in the United States, where he obtained third place and received a bronze medal. Nonyukela describes his experience abroad as transformative. “It was a great experience getting to play against the top players from other countries. I enjoyed every moment and learnt so much. I did, however, have a slow start owing to the fact that I had a problem with recording and using the clock which was new for me because we don’t use it in South Africa.” The draughts enthusiast added that he desires to share all that he has learnt during his time away in the States with other players.

The use of clocks and records will make things easier for them when they get a chance to play in world qualifiers.” He noted that finance is a huge challenge as the sport needs funding in order to work. “Sponsorship is really needed as the sport is

slowly but surely becoming very popular. With the little that I have I managed to buy trophies, medals and recording papers for the tournament.” He said they are also expecting players from Cape Town and East London to participate in the games.

Hy pak die tog aan vir kankerlyers en spesifiek vir Donna, ’n kollega van hom wat met dié lewensbedreigende siekte gediagnoseer is sowel as vir die plaaslike Reik Na Herstel borskanker-ondersteuningsgroep (Reach For Recovery). “Kanker was nog altyd ’n ding wat op een of ander wyse gekoppel word aan ’n hartseer storie. Ons almal ken iemand wat dit het of wat as gevolg van kanker gesterf het. Daarom pak ek die malligheid aan, want elke tree wat ek trap is vir mense met kanker.” sê Johan Oosthuizen van Uitenhage. Sy eerste langafstand uitdaging was vir Jamie-Lee Barendse, ’n meisie in ’n rolstoel. Hy het vanaf Johannesburg na Uitenhage gery om vir haar ’n goeie rolstoel te skenk. Daarna het hy vroeër vanjaar twee Guinness World Records met fietsry agter sy naam gekry, en dié al-om-dieblok uitdagings was vir Janecke Schuin wie se been geamputeer is as-ook ter nagedagtenis aan Jayde Inggs. ‘It has been an amazing century ...’ HEILIE COMBRINCK

dgar “Chappie” Chaplin has seen the world and swum in lakes and seas across the globe. He remembers the days they had to travel by ox-wagon. He drove his own car until the age of 99 years. And now, at the age of 100, he has a clear and fond memory of “an amazing century to have lived through.” “I’ve had a good life. My wife was an eternal optimist, she always said forget the bad and remember the good. And that’s the way I live, I prefer to be positive. And I am quite okay,” said Edgar Chaplin, a resident of Rosa Munch House. He stayed in Uitenhage for most of his life whilst being an accountant at Firestone (which he joined in 1938). Chaplin was an active member of the community and also of various sports clubs. He played bowls up to the age of 98. His wife Audrey was a maths teacher at Riebeek College. He originates from the village of Ngqeleni, Transkei, where he was born on 4th October 1917. He went to school in Mthatha and obtained his BCom degree at Rhodes University in 1937. “We really have a magnificent country,” he said. Travelling and enjoying the scenery has been part of his life since his childhood days. He remembers travelling by ox-wagon, especially the trips they took to Lwandile at the coast, where they would stay for several weeks during holidays. “It was 30 miles away and normally would take us 36 hours to get there by ox-wagon. It was about 12 miles to the nearest forest where we normally stayed over and let the oxen graze. Then we would leave early the next morning and by the afternoon we would reach the coast. “Sometimes when it was a moonlit night my

That always was a great adventure and beautiful with the full moon lighting up the area. “I remember the first car in Ngqeleni village. It was a 1919 Overlander owned by an attorney. My father so often had to pull it with two oxen as it could not handle the rough terrain. “Then the doctor bought a Model T Ford of which the fuel tank had to be higher than the engine. So whenever they had to drive up a steep hill, they had to do it in reverse otherwise the fuel could not flow into the engine.” Chaplin and his family loved to travel. He said they had been through every mountain pass in South Africa.

There have been immense changes in the world over the past 100 years. “The biggest change to me is technology. I can’t keep up with it. I do have a cellphone, but I remember the first telephones and the excitement about them. As kids we laughed and said imagine to one day phone and be able to see the person you speak to - and now it is like that.” His message in living a decent well balanced life is to work hard and to keep your body and mind active. “Get out and get around, if you don’t use it you will lose it. And of course, read as much as you can. “My wife’s grandfather said that as long as you are educated you need never to be lonely. I am never lonely, I pick up any book, read and am quite happy. “I still try to be active and walk every day, but I can do with a new pair of legs,” said Chaplin. Chaplin has two children, his son Robin, is a professor in nuclear engineering at a university in Ontario, Canada and his daughter Sherril, an educator in Matatiele.

Yolande Korkie to tell about al-Qaeda ordeal

olande Korkie, who was held hostage in Yemen along with her husband Pierre, who later was killed during a failed rescue attempt, will be the guest speaker at an event in Uitenhage. She has spent 558 days as a captive and in her book “558 Days” (also available in Afrikaans) she wrote about her family’s ordeal after they were abducted by al-Qaeda rebels. Yolande’s story speaks of a level of love that few couples will ever experience. It speaks of faith that grows stronger through adversity and of forgiveness that is more powerful than human boundaries. The couple had been in Yemen for four years with two teenage children when Pierre and Yolande were seized by al-Qaeda in 2013. Yolande was released eight months later without ransom after negotiations conducted by Gift of the Givers. They continued working for Pierre’s release, but unfortunately, the rescue attempt by US Navy Seals failed. Yolande will be in Uitenhage on Saturday, October 14th, 09:30 at the Evangelies Gereformeerde Kerk. Hearing to oppose Eskom increase THE Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral committee will attend a National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) public hearing on November 1. The public hearing comes after Eskom’s proposed tariff increase of 19.9% next year, which the metro government will vehemently oppose. According to the Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, major infrastructure maintenance and overhaul has begun under the coalition government. “A R25 billion maintenance backlog requires the administration’s urgent attention after dec-

ades of negligence and poor governance. “As such, Bay residents are already digging deep in terms of rates and tariffs. Every cent of this additional rates income is going to promote infrastructure-led growth and accelerate service delivery improvements,” he noted. The mayor said Eskom had shown itself to be irresponsible and reckless with public money. “As such, all metropolitan municipalities should reject Eskom’s proposed tariff. I urge all Bay residents to participate in this public hearing on November 1. The venue will be announced.”

Dragon Inn celebrates 40 years in food industry Owing to their dedication, love for food and passion for their business and what they do, Marlene and Winston Wong this month celebrate Dragon Inn’s 40 years of being in the take-away food industry. “It shows in our food, because it is made with love,” said Winston. The couple started their Dragon Inn Chinese take-away business during September 1977 in Caledon Steet, Uitenhage. During 2015, some 38 years later, they moved their business to 33 Union Avenue. It might be a bit smaller, but it is much more customer friendly with ample parking, the street is well lit and customers feel safer. Winston said that although they will be celebrating 40 years in business, it definitely does not feel so long. He and Marlene both have a passion and love for their business. “We are the only shop in town that specializes in Chinese dishes only,” said Winston. He was at a young age taught by his mother

how to cook. His father passed-away when Winston was only 7 years of age. Being the eldest of three children he often had to cook for the family as their mother attended to their shop. “My mom came from a large family of 11 children. Most of them were excellent cooks, so that’s where I inherited my talent for cooking,” said Winston. Eating - one of greatest joys Eating is one of the great joys of life for Winston and Marlene. “That is why I love making good food. And I personally find it very rewarding when I see someone enjoying our food.” The couple work closely together with a practical and hands-on approach towards their business. “We use only the best and fresh ingredients for our food and do not cut corners. We see that our food is of a high standard and quality.” Winston each day makes his own noodles (chow mein). Marlene with her friendly personality, sees to the customers in front, and also takes take-away orders by phone. In fact most of Dragon Inn’s customers place their orders by phone and they are ready by the time they arrive. They run their business according to strict Christian principles.

Major changes predicted for motor industry E

lectric vehicles, autonomously-driven vehicles, Uber and shared vehicles, as well as a change in market control by the original equipment manufacturers, are all upcoming events predicted to change the face of the motor industry in the next 10 years and beyond. These were some of the topics raised at the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) conference at Automechanika. Jooste, Director of Innovation at Sebokeng Campus - VUT Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park, addressed delegates on the workshop of the future and shared predictions made by US company, RethinkX. “According to RethinkX, from the early 2020, a family will save R68 000 per year by not owning a vehicle and by 2030 new car sales will drop by 70% in the US.” “The international move away from internal combustion engines to hybrid or electric

cars will mean that, due to economies of scale, electric cars will become more affordable. The maintenance costs of electric cars are 10% of those associated with combustion engines. A combustion engine has 2000 parts compared to an electric car that has 20. This is going to impact the role of the repairer.” He added that while the ecological argument for moving to electric cars is sound there are still very real challenges including hacking, the price and theft of copper, battery problems and so on. He also pointed out that every new Uber vehicle replaces the new sale of 18 to 20 privately-owned vehicles in Europe. “It’s worth considering than many people walk and commute in Europe since the distances are smaller. New route for 1City Relay Race THE 1City Relay and 42.2km Race has announced that the traditional route will be changing this year. The event will include the 42.2km marathon and relay race and a 5km family run which will start and finish at City Hall in Port Elizabeth on Sunday. The marathon and club/corporate relay will no longer run between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, but will follow a circular route through the streets of Walmer, Pari Park and Mount Pleasant. The 1City Relay race includes two distances, namely the 42.2km marathon and club/corporate relay which starts at 6:15am, and the 5km at 7am which will follow a circular route back to City Hall.

The entry fee for the marathon is R100. However, EPA-registered participants between the ages of 60 and 69 will pay only R50. Runners over the age of 70 will receive free entry. The temporary licence, required for the 42.2km only, is R30. The club, social and corporate team fee is R250, and R20 for the 5km family run. Record number of entries in train race Machine triumphed over Man last Sunday morning as just under 200 teams challenged the train in the Medihelp Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage ttations. This unique race to Nelson Mandela Bay gives athletes the opportunity to compete against a metro train in the only event of its kind that links the 3 towns which make up the metro. A record number of teams set off from Port Elizabeth station in near perfect running conditions which got progressively hotter as they came towards Uitenhage with the young team from Gamble Pharmacy setting a blistering pace over the 38km distance only to be overtaken by the train with just over a kilometre to the end. Over 700 train passengers enjoyed the experience of rail travel and pulled into Uitenhage Station just 3 minutes and 37 seconds ahead of the Gamble Pharmacy team who finished in

a time of 1:50:17, just over a minute slower than their winning time last year. SPAR DC Corporate finishing second in 1:52 whilst Gamble Pharmacy’s 2nd team finished in 3rd place. Transnet Running Club won the Club category ahead of Despatch AC and SPAR DC athletics club. In the social category it was the DC runners winning ahead of the Red Steam Runners and the Cooler Cats. In the schools category, DSG won the schools category ahead of Grey High School and Willow Academy. In the individual category, Bruce Gie finished the race in a time of 2 hours 32 minutes. Heyn van Rooyen, Principal Officer of Medihelp Medical Scheme came down from Pretoria to enjoy the train trip and said that Medihelp felt privileged to be part of this unique experience and is looking forward to be back next year for the 2018 Medihelp Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race.
