Recycling project to help fight hunger HEILIE COMBRINCK
P
ollution, poverty and malnutrition are on the increase, but a recycling and educational project in Kamesh, Uitenhage has made a remarkable impact on these issues. For the past three years, the Uitenhage Recycling Mula Swop Shop (a registered nonprofit organisation) driven by members from the community, has contributed to the removing of 73 902kg of plastic and cardboard from the area. “Our focus is on children. The Mula is about offering children the opportunity to exchange plastic and cardboard recyclables for food, clothing, educational material or toys which are available from our on-site shop,”
said Quinette Goosen, who together with Glinise Howard and Olive Grimsel founded the project. “There are too many children going to school hungry. And too many children going to sleep with an empty stomach.” The Mula concept is based on the principle of exchanging. Children earn Mula points through the weight of recyclables which they bring to the Mula collecting point at the Allanridge Civic Centre each Wednesday from 13:00 onwards. In return they exchange the Mula points they have earned for food, clothing, educational items or toys. There are more than 700 children registered at the Mula project and on average 120 children visit the shop per week. “On entering the Mula shop, the children wash their hands, enjoy a free light meal, and

then are accompanied by a Mula volunteer to ‘shop’ whatever they can afford with their Mula points they have earned. “At the start of the Mula project, children would head straight to the toys. Nowadays, they head straight to the food table. This is an indication of the changing need in our society. “The Mula legacy is that you can do something to change your situation. Another person’s rubbish can earn you something good,” said Quinette. The funds received from recycling companies are not enough for the Mula project to be self-sustainable. Therefore Mula volunteers have to raise funds through clothing sales and other ventures. The project hugely depends on sponsorships and the support of the broader commu-

Automotive lecturers upskilled in Germany THE German Handwerkskammer Erfurt (Chamber of Skilled Crafts) hosted a formal information session in Uitenhage on its partnership with eight Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and one high school in the Eastern Cape. The event took place at Eastcape Midlands TVET College’s Brickfields Road Campus. This partnership came about to fulfil the need for an upgrading of the practical skills of vocational lecturers in the automotive sector in TVET colleges in the Eastern Cape. This upgrade will include modern car diagnostics in line with the demands of the industry to improve employability and income of TVET
graduates in this sector. According to Assistant Director Marketing and Communications for EMC, Elmari van de Merwe, the Handwerkskammer Erfurt is a leading training institution for high-tech skills training, and 20 lecturers from nine different TVET institutions in the Eastern Cape will be invited to attend automotive training in Germany at its own training workshops in Erfurt. “The lecturers who will be attending the four-week training course in Germany received their formal invitations at the function. “The first group of 11 lecturers will leave
Specialized welding centre in league of its own Eastcape Midlands Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College last week launched the “Welding Centre of Specialisation” at their Brickfields Road Campus in Uitenhage. In a statement issued by Assistant Director Marketing and Communications for EMC, Elmari van de Merwe, she said within South Africa, welding has been identified as one of the scarce skills. “The award of Centre of Specialisation puts the Welding Centre in a league of its own as it will compete with the best equipped welding centres in the country,” said Van de Merwe. “A number of apprentices and learners
through the apprenticeship and learnership programme offered at EMC have been trained within this centre. The employability of the apprentices who study through it will increase exponentially.” MERSETA has played an integral role in funding the original launch of the “Welding Centre of Excellence” in conjunction with the EMC vision. Previous students from the Centre were also invited to participate in the World Skills Competition. This competition will be held again in 2019 and EMC would like some of its students to participate. The Welding Centre was originally launched in 2006.
in July 2018, while the second group will fly out later in 2018 or early 2019,” said Van de Merwe. As a follow up, lecturers from the Handwerkskammer Erfurt will visit South Africa to continue skills enhancement training for the South African TVET lecturers. “In preparation for this, the project has purchased three state-of-the-art Bosch FSA 740 hitech vehicle system analysers, a hybrid car engine and a stand-mounted petrol engine,” said Van de Merwe. “Other vital equipment has been provided to EMC which will be used to ensure continuous training by German and South African
experts throughout the project.” Dignitaries who attended the event in Uitenhage included delegates from the South African Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the German Embassy, local government, TVET colleges, SETAs and Office of the Premier. The Managing Director of the Handwerkskammer Erfurt, Mr Malcherek and Project Manager, Mr Rehbein handed over the equipment as well as the formal invitations to the lecturers selected to travel to Germany. The partnership project is funded through the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Be aware of fake R100 notes in Despatch A 38 year old man has been arrested by Despatch police after he was found in possession of counterfeit money (R100 notes). According to Uitenhage Cluster police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart, the ar-

rest followed after a local business notified the police regarding the person trying to transfer money through Money Market. “Police are issuing a warning to businesses and residents to be vigilant when handling money as they could fall victim to a counterfeit syndicate which distributeS fake notes in the area,” said Captain Swart. “We urge the public to scrutinize all bank notes, from R10 to R200 bills, and to be on the lookout for anything suspicious. The money looks genuine but one must pay more attention to the various security features. It is also advisable to make use of counterfeit detector machines,” said Captain Swart. The 38-year-old male suspect appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court last Monday on a charge of possession of counterfeit money. Investigations are continuing and the police are hoping that more arrests will follow, ultimately resulting in all the counterfeit cash being found and seized as well as the machine that is used to print it.

No drones allowed in Addo elephant park HEILIE COMBRINCK

F
lying a drone in the Addo Elephant National Park is illegal and can get you arrested on the spot and have your equipment confiscated. In fact, South African National Parks (SANParks) made it clear that flying of drones, or any other unmanned aerial vehicle, is not permitted in any of the National Parks. Fayroush Ludick, Regional Communications Manager of SANParks Frontier Region (Addo Elephant, Camdeboo, Karoo & Mountain Zebra National Parks) said, “Unfortunately drones will be a challenge throughout SANParks as long as they are readily available on the market.” “Park staff issue stiff fines if perpetrators are caught. We also have the option of confiscating a drone if we suspect a crime was committed. To date fines in the region of R2 500 have been issued,” said Ludick. National Parks are legislated protected areas with restricted airspace, therefore it is a no-fly zone for all unauthorized aircraft systems.
“We urge law-abiding Park visitors to report anyone making use of a drone in Addo Elephant National Park - FAYROUSH LUDICK, COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER OF SANPARKS FRONTIER REGION According to SANParks, drone flying is prohibited in terms of the National Environmental Management Protected Areas Act (NEMA) which states that, “It is illegal to fly below 2 500 feet above the highest point of any national park, with any aircraft/drone with-
out the express permission of the management authority of the particular National Park.” This means that Addo Elephant National Park is also a no-fly zone for all unauthorised aircraft and drones.
Flying such aircraft illegally in the park disturbs and negatively impacts on the wellbeing of animals as well as the experience of other park visitors. “We simply have to enforce the Protected Areas Act and have adopted a zero tolerance attitude towards those using drones in a National Park. “We urge law-abiding Park visitors to report anyone making use of a drone in Addo Elephant National Park. Report it to reception or to security at either of our gates. “It is important to identify where the drone is coming from - possibly see the car it is being deployed from and take down the registration number. We will in turn stop offenders upon exiting the park. Guests witnessing drones in the Park must please also be prepared to give a sworn statement.” The “no drone zone” information is stated on entering the park and printed at the back of the visitor’s map, which is issued to each vehicle upon entry. “So, ignorance is not an excuse in the eyes of the law. The average fine for using a drone or unmanned aircraft inside a National Park is R2 500 and possible confiscation of the equipment,” said Ludick.
Rotary Anns making a difference THE Rotary Anns of Uitenhage South once again showed their commitment to uplifting the poor and needy in the community by revamping the reception classes at Caritas Primary School in Rosedale, Uitenhage. The classrooms were in a terrible state with holes in the floors, broken ceilings, poor ventilation and in dire need of a coat of paint. “The kids attending the school come from impoverished areas in Rosedale and the local community is totally unable to help,” said Anns President, Anita Naidoo. The Anns raised money through their steak braais, and undertook to make the classrooms more colourful and vibrant, as reception classes ought to be. They refurbished and fully decorated the classrooms, and with the assistance of Nikita Karsan, displayed their artistic talent by also painting beautiful and fun artwork on the walls. “The kids were overwhelmed when they saw their newly painted classrooms, and the teachers, Mrs Goliath and Mrs Joseph, along with the principal Eric Meyer were also elated on seeing the end results,” said Naidoo. Learners and staff alike have expressed their heartfelt gratitude for what the Anns have done for them. The Anns are also pleased to have been able to uplift the morale of the teachers and learners in the school, and Ann President Anita Naidoo would like to thank the public for continually supporting all their ventures in reaching out to the poor and needy in the community.

How much debt is too much? WHILE there is no definite measure, there are ways to determine if you’ve taken on more than you can handle. If you cannot pay all your household expenses, including your debt repayments, you have a problem. It may be that you have too much debt, but it may also be that you are not spending your available income correctly, explains debt counsellor Renee Marais. The most important way to determine

whether you have too much debt is by calculating your debt-to-income ratio. What do you earn and what do you have to pay? Here is a look at the different aspects of your income and expenses. Gross income: The amount that you actually earn before any deductions. The first payments one makes are statutory and there is no getting away from that. These payments include tax to the SA Revenue Ser-

vice (SARS) and to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). “We are all responsible for contributing to the financial purse of the country,” says Marais. Net income: After the gross income, you are left with a net income. This is used for other important deductions such as pension, provident fund, medical aid, and more. These deductions are usually part of your employment contract as fixed deductions, and are usually categorised as employer’s deduction. Disposable income: After all your necessary deductions, you are left with your disposable income. This is the amount reflecting at the end of the month on your bank statement and what is paid over to you to use. How this is used is your responsibility. Discretionary income: The amount left over after everything that is necessary is paid is called your discretionary income. This is what is used to pay off debt, for an example. If your discretionary income is less than the monthly instalments needed for your monthly debt repayments, you are in trouble. If you can only pay some of your creditors and not others, you are in trouble, says Marais. If you find yourself unable to afford your debt, the first thing you have to think about it is how you spend your living expenses and where you can cut down.
Cut down on unnecessary spending: 1. Buy what you need, not what you want. 2. Get a timer for your geyser. 3. Don’t buy expensive coffee and other beverages. Take a flask for on-the-go coffee or tea from home. 4. Don’t buy plastic bags from the supermarket, take a cloth bag that can fold up and be reused and washed. 5. Brainstorm on ideas as to how to save on living expenses. 6. Don’t accept any concessions over the phone, warns Marais. Savings an essential expense It is important to note that savings is also an essential living expense. If you do not save you have no reserves for emergencies. Have, for example, a 30- or 60-day savings account - which incidentally has tax benefits and a little more interest than an ordinary savings account. The down side is that you must give the bank notice before you can access the funds. If you put a bit aside before paying anything else, after 12 months you have something in reserve to pay for emergencies or go on holiday with. Credit is expensive Credit is useful in emergencies or for purchasing a car or house. It is not useful for buying food or luxury items. Rather save in your emergency savings account and then buy the item you need or want and negotiate a discount on cash payments, Marais concludes. (FIN24)

Bipolar disorder untreated, can push a person over the edge into a hypomania or manic phase. Once this is triggered, it is irreversible. “It is like diabetes, once you have been diagnosed with it, it can never go away. You will have to deal with it for the rest of your life and take your medication for the rest of your life in order to try your best to lead a normal life,” said Maryke Gouws, a Support Group leader of the Bipolar Support Group in Despatch. Maryke facilitates free support group meetings for sufferers of depression, anxiety and bipolar to assist them in accepting and managing their problems. She is a South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) affiliated support group leader and has therefore been trained to assist with the topics of depression, anxiety and bipolar. “I was misdiagnosed and the wrong medicine was prescribed. I tried to commit suicide. Through the healing process I thankfully was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and received the right treatment and medicine,” said Maryke. “Statistics show that 69% of persons with bipolar disorder were initially wrongly diagnosed. Therefore I feel it is my calling to inform people about bipolar disorder and also to create awareness and support for those in need.” According to Maryke, most people start showing signs of bipolar disorder in their late teens. These signs may be dismissed as “growing pains” or normal teenage behaviour. Bipolar disorder may not be properly diagnosed until the sufferer is 25-40 years of age, at which time the pattern of symptoms may become clearer. “The good news is that with proper therapy, persons with bipolar disorder can lead stable and productive lives. Therapy is also more successful with strong support from family and loved ones,” said Maryke. The Bipolar Support Group in Despatch meets every second Thursday at Kleuterland, 20 Smith Street at 19:00. All interested are most welcome and attendance is free of charge. Owing to the nature of the support group meetings, they request the assistance of the public in terms of donations or resources. )To find out exactly what basic resources or for more information about the support group, contact Maryke 082 320 9452 or SADAG 0800 21 22 23.

Too much mystery around land reform plans THE real problem with the land expropriation motion passed in Parliament is that it does not actually seek to speed up the transfer of land to any individual or group of owners. On the contrary, says Berry Everitt, CEO of the Chas Everitt International property group, it seeks only to put more land in the hands of the State - which has an extremely poor track record when it comes to land reform and redistribution over the past 24 years. “Most South Africans understand and support the urgent need to address historic injustices and achieve a much more equitable distribution of land, property ownership and wealth. “But unfortunately, this motion has come with no plan attached about how the gross inefficiencies and corruption that have dogged the process so far will be addressed and fixed – or what the State intends to do differently

going forward, using the considerable power and resources it already has at its disposal.” As a result, he says, the motion could all too easily create the impression that it is just the first move in a longer-term plan to nationalise all property in SA, and for everyone from famers to flat-dwellers to have to lease their land from the State. “This certainly seems to be the vision of the Economic Freedom Front, but as has already been pointed out, this would destroy one of the pillars of the economy, because banks would no longer be able to use land as security, for example for the working capital that farmers need every season. It is our understanding that agricultural debt currently totals around R160bn, and if that were to be recalled, it would certainly put the whole country’s food security at risk. “There would also be no underlying security for home loans, so anyone who wanted to buy a home would need to pay the full purchase price in cash. “This would deprive millions of ordinary South Africans of the only opportunity that most of them have to build up their personal wealth and financial security for their families.” Consequently, Everitt says, he does not believe that nationalisation is the intention of
the governing party, or that there is any need to panic in reaction to the expropriation motion – “not least because President Ramaphosa has emphatically stated several times that expropriation without compensation will only be supported when it poses no threat to agricultural production, food security or the financial institutions. “However, the fact is that the motion to amend Section 25 of our Constitution, which is now under review by the parliamentary Constitution Committee, has already raised a red flag among the investors South Africa needs so badly if it is to achieve even modest success in growing the economy and reducing chronic unemployment. “And as a country we already know that perception is everything when it comes to attracting new foreign investments and persuading local investors to keep their money here rather than take it offshore. “So for the sake of all our futures, the ‘land issue’ needs to be handled with much more finesse and transparency than is currently the case. “Government urgently needs to spell out its intentions and a clear plan for realising its land restitution objectives and agricultural / land reform programme,” said Everitt. Property owners in municipal areas only have a short time in which to lodge any objections to the new municipal valuations of their properties – and to the new municipal rates based on these valuations that they will be charged from July. And to assist, the Chas Everitt International property group is offering free independent valuations to all owners who need supporting documentation for such objections. “If they don’t do this, they could end up paying far too much in municipal rates each month or even being forced out of their homes because the new rates are unaffordable,” says group CEO Berry Everitt.

SPECIAL THANKS TO PROF KULA Lizzelle 46yrs from Graaff Reinet, thank you Prof Kula for helping my family, my son was a drug & alcohol addict for yrs & I tried a lot of healers and prophets but all failed until I saw Prof Kula's advert in the newspaper. He came to our house and performed his spiritual prayers which chased away all evil and demons which was destroying my family. Prof Kula used his magic rats & short boys to bring money into our house that same night. With his powerful miracles he prayed for us and our marriage is better now and peaceful. All thanks to Prof Kula again. Please contact him should you have any problems. You pay after the job has been completed successfully or visit him in Port Elizabeth. Call or Whatsapp 063 383 6452

(DON'T Lose Fiath, Give Prof Hope Try) Strongest Healer
My name is Reuben, am 48 years old. Staying with my 2 daughters and 2 sons. For very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents, both old, father 79 and mother 76. I was the only working in our family working as care giver. I struggled financially, my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help as well like basic needs as elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers but no one could help me, I wasted all the money but no results, I just keep losing the small I had. I was hopeless for many years until I read Testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account IN JUST 30min. I made an appointment with him, as he explained to me all the options like Money Rats to put money in the house in same day, Short Boys to put money in your Account in same day, Magic Ring to Win Money games like Gambling, Casino, Lotto and Betting. Magic wallet to multiply your money. I choose Money Rats to put money in my house. He explained to me the process. VW sponsors Africa’s largest surfing event “For us, getting involved with the City Surf Series was a no-brainer as the Volkswagen brand has been associated with surfing for many years with surfers using their camper vans and Kombi’s to go on surfing tournaments,” said Matt Gennrich, General Manager for Group Communications. The second edition of the City Surf Series (CSS) will see six events, culminating in the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing presented by Hurley, taking place in different cities along South Africa’s coastline from March to June. Each of the CSS events will feature Qualifying Series (QS) rated men’s, women’s, junior men’s and junior women’s competitions, Surfing South Africa (SSA) longboard men and women and Stand-up Paddling (SUP) men and women’s categories. A major change from last year’s series is the upgrading of the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing women’s event to a QS3000, making it the biggest women’s QS in Africa. The Nelson Mandela Bay Pro men’s event has also been upgraded to a QS1500. “Another exciting addition is the launch of a new event, the Port Alfred Classic, which will feature men’s and women’s QS Long-
board events with the two disciplines also added to the Volkswagen SA of Surfing presented by Hurley,” said Johnny Bakker, Surfing South Africa president. “As Nelson Mandela Bay is the home of Volkswagen, we are also proud that the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing has relocated from Durban to Nelson Mandela Bay,” added Gennrich. The Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing events being hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay are expected to bring in an estimated 4 000 to 6 000 visitors and an R18 million cash injection for the city. Not only will the CSS events support the local economy, all events will give back to the community and environment by incorporating Learn to Surf Initiatives as well as Community Clean-the-Beach programmes. In the 2017 edition of the CSS, over 300 previously disadvantaged children across the five events were taught to surf. 2018 City Surf Series Event Schedule: . Fraudsters targeting vehicle theft victims WITH the number of vehicle thefts and hijackings increasing across South Africa, an alarming new trend has emerged involving scams directed at the victims of recent vehicle thefts/hijackings. This is according to Hugo van der Merwe, National Manager: Assessing at MUA Insurance Acceptances, who says that the company has already seen multiple instances where policyholders have been targeted by fraudsters following the theft or hijacking of their insured vehicles. “Shortly after reporting a stolen or hijacked vehicle to the South African Police Services, a number of policy-
holders stated that they were contacted by individuals posing as police officers,” said Van der Merwe. “In each of these cases, the fraudster informs the policyholder that his or her stolen or hijacked vehicle has been recovered in a different province or even in a neighbouring country. The policyholder is then informed that he or she needs to pay fees via electronic funds transfer (EFT) or an electronic wallet in order to have the vehicle returned.” Van der Merwe warns that this is not regular police procedure and that individuals should under no circumstances pay these or
any other types of fees if they are contacted after a vehicle theft or hijacking. “These instances have been brought to the attention of the South African Police Service and are being investigated as a matter of urgency. “Remember that if an insured vehicle is in fact recovered, the policyholder will be informed by his or her respective investigating officer. “He or she will also never be asked to pay additional recovery fees,” Van der Merwe concludes. ‘Hot finish’ for athletes in Uitenhage Human Race THE NMBM Legacy Project 30km Uitenhage Human Race which started and finished at Derek Ferreira Rugby Stadium on Saturday was won by Itheko club athlete Nkosinathi Madyo in 1: 38:53 with Ntombesinthu Mfunzi first female home in 2:00:03. The event was well supported and enjoyed fair conditions with little wind and a hot finish. Kabelo Melamu of KPMG took second place in 1.39.04 with Amos Nyongo of Motherwell Athletics club in third position with a time of 1:39:19. Popular local athlete, Ntombi Mfunzi, who is currently training with Alec Riddle, had not planned on defending her title and a podium finish as she is in strict training for the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon. “I planned not to push myself too hard and keep an average of 4min/km for a 2 hour fin-
ish,” said Ntombi. “I am very happy with my performance as I ran to a disciplined training plan and surprised myself with a win. “I am looking forward to improving on my personal best time at Two Oceans which is a 3.52 finish from 2012. With my current fitness levels I feel I can improve on this time and achieve a top five finish”, said a motivated Ntombi. Zintle Xiniwe of KPMG, was the second woman home in 2:02:23 with Bulelwa Simae, of Nedbank running club, Western Cape, in third place with a time of 2:05:14. Evergreen Alan Taylor won the 60-69 category in 2:18:26. Adriaan Gerwel, of Ikhamva athletics club, won the 10km run in 32:26.
