illow Dam is an absolute disgrace! A place known for its birdlife and variety of beautiful ducks now is full of sewage and rubbish. “Sewage has been flowing into the dam occasionally during the past month and the awful stench tells it all when it comes to service delivery to Uitenhage,” said Aubrey Nell, President of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. Members of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South have once again shown that when it comes to service above self, they do not restrict themselves to certain days of doing good, but do good in their community throughout the year. They tackled Willow Dam and removed rubbish, bottles and even grocery trolleys from the dam. According to Dave McCleland from the Garden Town Initiative, “This is a health hazard and the overflowing of this sewage happens regularly. “Does the Metro not care what happens here in Uitenhage? We as residents are paying huge amounts in municipal rates and taxes to be treated in this way?” Willow Dam is the chosen venue of a forthcoming social event hosted by the Uitenhage Community Policing Forum to offer local charities, societies as well as businesses the opportunity to market themselves as well as socialize on the 31st August. ;Here are some of the members of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South busy cleaning the area at Willow Dam.

ddo Elephant National Park walked away with two of the most prestige awards at the recent South African National Parks regional awards evening held in Graaff-Reinet. The ceremony is held annually to celebrate the top achievers from the four national parks in the Frontier Region namely Addo Elephant, Mountain Zebra, Camdeboo and Karoo National Parks. Addo Elephant National Park was named Best Performing Park and its Main Camp Best Performing Camp for excellent achievements in conservation, tourism and people and conservation: SANParks’ three core business areas. According to Fayroush Ludick, Regional Communications Manager SANParks, some of the achievements which led to the Park’s success included a 15.7% increase in visitors, with bed occupancy the highest of all 21 South African National Parks at 69.3%. “In terms of conservation, the Park’s lion

management is of such a high standard that it has been instrumental in paving the way for the introduction of lion in other parks in the region,” said Ludick. “On the People and Conservation side, the Park has had numerous successes, including starting up a beekeeping project which is run by a group from a neigbouring community. “The Park also extracts alien fish from the Darlington Dam, harvests and sells it to locals from surrounding townships as a low cost, high protein food source. They also assisted with the renovations and refurbishment of schools around the Park.” Addo’s Marine Team also walked away with the Best Ranger Post of the Year Award. The team was honoured for the instrumental role they played in controlling poaching in Addo’s marine environment, making a number of arrests along the way. They have also been key with regard to the preservation of the endangered penguin species on Bird and St Croix islands.

Chess festival held in U’hage With the success of the recent 2013 Commonwealth and SA Open Chess Championship in Port Elizabeth, a crowd-funding campaign was launched to help make a documentary about the game of chess. Ramon Thomas, better known as an online safety expert in the media, recently launched a crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo. The primary focus of the documentary is to film the 10th annual Uitenhage Chess Festival taking place 2 to 3 August. “This is my first documentary and the purpose of this project is to support the local community to re-launch the last two chess clubs that closed down and celebrate the winners from the last 10 years,” said Thomas.

President Jacob Zuma, a patron of Moves for Life and an advocate of the importance of chess in education, said that chess had given solace to him and to many other former political prisoners on Robben Island, where he first learned to play the game. “The Uitenhage Chess Festival has been a rated tournament by ChessSA since 2008,” according to Elizabeth Muller, retired librarian, and co-founder of the tournament with Ria Diedericks in 2004. “This documentary film can stimulate the minds and hearts of children who are our primary target for the chess clubs and tournaments.” There is a cash prize of R1 000 for the win-

A special breakfast and social event in celebration of Women’s Month will be held to acknowledge the role domestic workers fulfilled in households. The event is hosted at Barkly Street Theatre on the 17th August by Khanya (“Be Bright Where You Are”), a registered non-profit organisation. “We kindly request employers of domestic workers to treat these ladies to this special event by purchasing a ticket at Barkly Street Theatre. There will also be lucky prizes for employers who supported this event by granting their domestic worker the opportunity to be treated on this day,” said Yolene Basson from Khanya.

Die assistent-redakteur Janessa Osle, het hom lof toegeswaai vir die gehalte van sy natuurtoneel en dit op Walter Foster se Facebook in die VSA geplaas. Van der Walt is ‘n kunsstudent by plaaslike skilder Llise Dodd, wat op Woensdae onderrig aan ‘n groep amateurskilders van die omgewing gee. Sy is alombekend en het al talle suksesvolle uitstallings in die Oos- en Suid-Kaap gehou. Dodd beplan ’n Art Cafe Safari gedurende Oktober. Dit behels ‘n weeklange reisende uitstalling van haar studente se werk wat by ‘n hele paar plaaslike kuierplekke en restaurante te sien sal wees. Die doel van dié uitstallings is om skilderkuns in die streek te help bevorder.

Hulle het aan die nasionale LSEN Cravenweek deelgeneem wat op Uitenhage aangebied is. Duane Joseph is as kaptein van die span aangewys, terwyl Rameez Nell as die speler van die toernooi gekroon is. Die Oos-Kaap-span het puik rugby gespeel en die Pumas sowel as die Blou Bulle oortuigend geklop. Die span het deurgedring na die finale waar hulle in erge reënweer teen die Westelike Provinsie verloor het. Na afloop van die LSEN Cravenweek is Rameez Nell, Duane Joseph en Darron Ruiters van Bergsig vir die Suid-Afrikaanse LSEN-span gekies wat in Durban in aksie te sien was. Nell was die onderkaptein van die span. Dit is die eerste keer in Bergsig Skool se geskiedenis dat drie seuns tot die Suid-Afrikaanse LSEN rugbyspan verkies is.
