IN a second incident within a week in the same street in KwaNobuhle, a tavern owner was robbed and shot by armed men. “As we enter the festive season, the police would like to warn business owners to take the necessary precautions in safeguarding cash,” said police spokersperson Lt Col Priscilla

Naidu. It is alleged that four unknown armed men stormed into a tavern in Gwali Street, demanding cash. “The men did not believe the owner when he informed them that he did not have any money. They became angry and shot the man in his right leg. They then found the cash and fled. The injured tavern owner was admitted to the hospital for treatment. A case of armed robbery is under investigation.”

“Tavern owners must make arrangements for the money to be deposited into the bank as soon as possible. Large amounts should never be kept at the premises.” In another incident in Gwali Street, Satchumzi Gogo (42), a resident who lived a few doors away from the tavern owner was shot and killed four days before the tavern shooting. Nothing was taken and the motive for the killing is unknown. No arrests have been made.

Overseas trip for Rotary exchange study The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South is urgently looking for applicants in the field of basic education and literacy who would like to further their experience and knowledge in their chosen vocation in the United States of America. Applicants have to be between the ages of 25 and 40, enthusiastic about their vocation, currently be employed on a full time basis for a minimum of two years. Successful applicants will be going overseas for a four to five week period during April 2013. The applicants must also have, or be able

Vehicle theft on the increase THEFT of motor vehicles, as well as out of vehicles, is escalating around the Despatch area and residents are urged to take the necessary precautions. According to W/O Marianette Olivier, although criminals are targeting any kind of vehicle that is standing outside during the night, most of the incidents occurred in Windsor Park and Azalea Park. “In the latest incidents, the wheels were removed from the vehicles,” said Olivier. Superintendent Vuyisiwe Tembanie, Sta-

tion Commissioner of SAPS Despatch, said: “We want to request the community to assist us by taking precautionary measures in the safeguarding of their vehicles.” The police appeal to all vehicle owners to be more security conscious by installing alarm systems or immobilisers in their vehicles. As Uitenhage and Despatch are incorporated into the Nelson Mandela Metropole, the Lions Club of Uitenhage has decided to convert the Junior Town Council to a school based Alpha Leo Club. This will serve as the youth arm of Lions Clubs International, whose motto is ‘We Serve’. The official chartering of the Alpha Leo Club will take place as soon as the documentation is received from Lions Clubs International. Outgoing JTC Mayor Unika Schonken from Brandwag and Deputy Mayor Geré Zeelie from Strelitzia High, recently handed over their chains of office at the 26th JTC induction ceremony, to the incoming Mayor Shaheen Korodia from Muir College and Deputy Mayor Martina MacDonald from Uitenhage High for the period 2012 – 2013. The JTC consists of six elected pupils from Muir College, Brandwag, Despatch, Strelitzia, Riebeek College and Uitenhage High. “Over the years the members of the JTC have worked tirelessly to ease the plight of those in

the community less fortunate than themselves,” said Lion Bokkie Oberholzer. Some of the projects they have undertaken over the years include supplying ingredients and manning soup kitchens, supplying food parcels, clothing, blankets, supporting the Rape Crisis Centre and the local SPCA, visiting old age homes, and homes for the physically and mentally disabled as well as childrens homes, which are all ongoing projects of theirs. They have also raised funds for a baby requiring specialist interventions in the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town. “Over and above these projects they have also on an annual basis assisted the Uitenhage Lions Club in the baking and distributing in excess of 2 000 cup cakes per year to the under privileged in our community in aid of the 67 minutes for Mandela Day,” said Lion Oberholzer. Woman raped at Willow Dam

The Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) is seeking the assistance of the community in an alleged kidnapping and rape case. It is alleged that on the 6 October 2012 at about 09:20, a 38 year old Uitenhage woman was walking in New Street, Uitenhage when she was approached by an unknown man who forced the woman at gunpopint into his vehicle. He then took her to

Willow Dam where she was allegedly raped. At the time of her ordeal, the suspect placed a mask over her face. The victim alleged that there were pedestrians in New Street at the time of her abduction. Police is appealing to anyone who might have witnessed the incident to contact D/Sgt Llewellyn De Vries on 0083 650 5028. The suspect is believed to be in his late forties, is bald and has a moustache.

The body of the second drowning victim of the recent floods was found by the Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth K9 Unit on Sunday. The body of John Smit (19) was found in shallow river water next to Algoa Road. The deceased was washed off a bridge in KwaNobuhle the previous Sunday. The body of a Kirkwood man who drowned was recovered by the same K9 unit members and their dogs last Thursday.

Cyclist completes five day trip to Centurion

HEILIE COMBRINCK A keen cyclist from Uitenhage completed a five day cycling trip, covering 1 350km from here to Centurion. “Day one from Uitenhage to Middelburg was one of the most confusing and frustrating routes I have ever experienced. By midday I was so tired and sore that I was ready to give

up and go home,” said Peet Balfour. With the inspiration of his two daughters waiting for him in Centurion and the support of sponsors and friends for this epic, Balfour tackled the second day with renewed energy. “I started my trip from Middelburg to Colesburg at 04:00 to skip the heat. What a day! Carlton Heights with a climb of 1630m nearly killed me and then the wind started to blow.

The following day was mostly a long fast ride at an average speed of 25-30km/h to Bloemfontein.” On day four Balfour tackled the 225km from the City of Roses to Kroonstad. “This was the best stage as the road is mostly flat.” On day five, Balfour left Kroonstad at 03:30 to cover his last stage, but had to take an alternative route via Parys, Fochville, Westonaria,

Dié beroep kom van bewaringsbewustes nadat Brenda Matthee, DA-raadslid, die munisipaliteit so ver kon kry om oplaas die uitslae van sommige watergehalte-toetse van die Swartkops bekend te maak. Toetse word op 13 plekke langs die rivier, van Bulmersdrif tot by die Setlaarsbrug, geneem. Die uitslae van die toetse tussen Oktober 2011 en Mei 2012 is verlede week aan die munisipaliteit se staande komitee van openbare gesondheid voorgelê. “Dié verslag dui aan dat die hoogste tellings geneem is by die Nivenbrug (Uitenhage), die Kelvin Jones-rioolsuiweringswerke (Uitenhage) en die Motherwell- en Markman-kanale. “ ’n Skrikwekkende hoë telling van 1,2 miljoen kolonies E.coli per 100 ml is op 11 April 2012 by Kelvin Jones gemeet!” het sy gesê. ’n Telling tussen nul en 130 per 100 ml maak

Die pragtige Waterbessieboom kom onder meer in die Oos-Kaap langs riviere voor en die boom se bessies lok voëls en insekte. Twee inheemse skoenlapper-spesies kan slegs op ’n Waterbessiebome voortplant.

Alhoewel dit aanvanklik goed gegaan het met die boomplantery moes die boom kort daarna verwyder word nadat rondloper beeste in die dorp byna die bessieboom vernietig het. Weens die vroeëre landswye vragmotorstaking was dit ook ’n vermoeiende stryd om die nodige omheiningsmateriaal te bekom om die boom te beskerm..

Twee krieketspelers van Hoërskool Brandwag het onlangs op dieselfde dag teen Muir College honderdtalle aangeteken. Vir Brandwag se eerste span het Wian Duvenhage 103 lopies aangeteken nadat Brandwag, wat eerste gekolf het, met 28 vir 4 in die moeilikheid was. Wian en spanmaat Mario Mowers (55) se vennootskap van 130 lopies vir die vyfde paaltjie het Brandwag gehelp om 261 in 49 beurte aan te teken op Muir se tuisveld. Brandwag boul Muir vir slegs 35 lopies uit om die wedstryd met 226 lopies te wen. Igré van Niekerk (3 vir 2 in 3 beurte) en Heino Meyer (2 vir 11 in 7 beurte) was die beste boulers. Op dieselfde dag kolf Brandwag se o/14Aspan eerste teen Muir by Brandwag en André Conradie teken 119 lopies vanaf 110 balle aan. André vorm saam met John-James Moolman (78 nie uit nie) ’n vennootskap van 213 vir die vyfde paaltjie. Brandwag behaal 280 vir 5 in vyftig beurte. André (1 vir 21 in 6 beurte) en John-James (5 vir 41 in 7 beurte) was ook die beste boulers en Muir se o/14A’s is almal uit vir 170 lopies. Brandwag se o/14A’s wen met 110 lopies.

Bergsig Skool se rugby vol hoogtepunte Bergsig se eerste rugbyspan sowel as hulle blitsige 7’s span het vanjaar ‘n suksesvolle seisoen met vele hoogtepunte in hulle onderskeie ligas agter die rug. Tydens ‘n mini-rugbytoernooi waar 11 spanne kragte gemeet het, was Bergsig die wenners van dié driehoekige toernooi. Hul het ook op die jaarlikse Kaap-toernooi puik gevaar, maar ongelukkig het die toernooi geëindig sonder ‘n uitslag as gevolg van gure weersomstandighede. Die Oos-Kaapse LSEN rugbyspan het ook puik gevaar tydens die nasionale toernooi in Johannesburg waar hulle twee uit die drie wedstryde gewen het. Tydens die Linkside-toernooi was Bergsig die enigste onoorwonne span en het afgereken met spanne soos PJ Olivier, Paul Sauer, Maclaghlan, Linkside en ook die finaal gewen. Op die 7’s rugbytoernooi was die uitslae ook positief en het Bergsig tydens die @lantic 7’s die bekerfinaal gewen.

Klawerjas THEY have been the reigning champions for the past two years, and will now, once again, play to the bitter end, to bring the trophy home for the third year in a row. Orlando Kerridge, the captain and driving force behind the Polo Cats Klawerjas Club and his team, will defend their Champs of Champs title this week in Cape Town. Polo Cats joined the Uitenhage Klawerjas Union fold in 2002, and over the decade they have gone from strength to strength - bringing home various titles and engraved their names in the S.A.K.B.O.C. history books. The evergreen Ryaaz Jack, Scott January, Andrew Domingo and Maurice Pillay are the mighty giants in the Klawerjas fraternity, while the golden oldies like Dean Bacon, Llindatno Surtie, D.P. Marney and Cecil Uithaler form the backbone of this undefeated team. In preparation for the up-coming tournament, the Polo Cats K.C. clinched the knockout trophy last week, while the C.C. Terminators K.C. came second and Volkswagen securing the loser’s Cup Trophy. Players who made a great impression in the knock-out games are Clifford Arends, “Zoha” Mentoor, “Mac Jan” Forbes and captain Hentinus Claasen.

Baseball big hit at Despatch The five day 20th South African Masters Baseball Association Inter-Provincial Tournament that took place at the Despatch sports complex was a roaring success. In the A-division, Eastern Gauteng were the stand-out performers and beat Western Province in the final in front of a rather large crowd. The final games were opened by Springbok rugby player, Adri Geldenhuys, who threw the first pitch of the game. In the Challenge division, Gauteng Bears beat Kwa-Zulu Natal. Leigh Rieder, former Muirite, who is now in Gauteng, mentioned he enjoyed the game and catching up with old friends. In the Veterans Section, the Eastern Province Vets went down against Western Province in a

closely fought semi-final; however WP lost to Kwa-Zulu Natal in the final in extreme conditions. Congratulations go to Dennis Transell, Nantie Hayward, Morné Minnie and Mervin Johnson, who have been selected to represent the SA Masters at the World Masters Games, in Italy, in August 2013. According to Terrence Gouws, tournaments of this stature only come around every eight years and the next one will be held in Port Elizabeth, as Uitenhage and Despatch have already been proud hosts.
