At the launch event, Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi was joined by RFHD partners including Rotarians For Family Health & Aids Prevention, Inc. (RFHA), The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation, SABC, Caxton and PEPFAR partners, the Centres for Disease Control and USAID, to promote family health care and create awareness around the importance of health screening. “As part of the Department of Health’s mission to improve the health status of South African citizens through the prevention of illnesses and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, we are proud to be a part of this initiative. “We aim to consistently improve the healthcare delivery systems in this country and we feel that RFHD is the perfect vehicle to assist us in this effort,” explained Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi. Speaking regarding the 225 Rotary Clubs and their representatives at the launch, Marion Bunch, CEO of RFHA, says “This is a great example of how people and organizations from different sectors of the community can come together to make a difference in the health of South Africans. “The 4 000 Rotarians in South Africa mobilize the communities into action, and they select, build and volunteer at all the sites during the three day campaign”. elson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) has its first television advertisement – and it’s entirely home-grown. “The challenges of shooting the whole commercial in slow motion with half of it at night, meant that we had to take our technical ability to a new level,” said Andrew Jute from production company Rooftop. From the production crew and actors through to the locations and voice over, the 30-second advertisement which is set to flight on national television in April, is a proudly Eastern Cape production. Even the accompanying music was especially arranged by a Port Elizabethan. “We’re thrilled with this advertisement and how it’s going to position Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University nationally. The university has over the past two years grown in national stature, but we need to further create awareness,” said NMMU Director of Market-

ing and Corporate Relations Pieter Swart. The advert also includes the voice of international actor John Kani, who still calls New Brighton home and is an NMMU honorary graduate. The music is by Ethan Rank, a former NMMU music alumnus. “The music and John Kani’s voice add the gravitas NMMU needs in sharing its brand beyond the Eastern Cape,” said Swart. Unlike traditional university advertisements, NMMU opted to appeal to people’s emotions in sharing the “moment” when you turn dreams into reality. All five locations are in the Eastern Cape, two within the university. The university worked with strategic brand agency Boomtown and production company Rooftop, whose teams include a large number of NMMU alumni. Though the actual filming probably only took five full days of filming at the different locations, the final product took months of ed-

Rally to assist families of fallen bikers T

he Uitenhage Lions Club which is a member of the Eastern Cape Presidents Council provided a service to assist the Dirty Dozen, a group of caring bikers who initiated the Ratel Rally in aid of the Eastern Cape Bikers Benevolent Fund (BBF). As part of their fundraising efforts the BBF hosts the Ratel Rally which this year was held at the Springs Resort, on the outskirts of Uitenhage. “The BBF aim is to assist bikers in any way possible by covering certain medical ac-

counts and/or assisting families of fallen bikers with funeral costs. All profits generated by the Ratel Rally are paid towards the BBF,” said Lion Denis Murphy from Uitenhage Lions Club. Gary Kent (known to all as Gazz) who was one of the founding members of the BBF passed away from a terminal illness early this year. “His motto as a dedicated biker was to ride safe, ride far and ride often. His commitment to the biker fraternity and his passion to as-

sist fellow bikers and/or their families resulted in him donating his late 1970s model Honda CB 650. “He requested that the bike be used as a hearse for biker funerals and as a public awareness tool.” The Ratel Rally is fast becoming a National Rally and 1 027 bikers from all over South Africa including Namibia attended it in support of the BBF. “To this effect the involvement of the Uitenhage Lions Club contributes to both the BBF and the community ‘We Serve’”, said Lion President Barend Erasmus. The bikers also made donations in respect of the Uitenhage SPCA. “The local biker fraternity is always willing

to assist the Uitenhage and Despatch communities in times of need and hardship. We appeal to all to assist the BBF with donations,” said Erasmus. The BBF has been registered as a non-profit company with CPIC and as a non-profit organisation with SARS. Parkinson-siekte is by Charles gediagnoseer en hy het ’n breinoperasie ondergaan. “Dit het later erg geraak, en het amper gekeer dat ek my eksamens kon voltooi – maar ek het vasgebyt,” het Charles gister uit Kroonstad vertel. Die ondersteuning van sy broers en sy vrou, Sonja, het ’n groot rol in sy sukses gespeel, het Charles gesê. “Ek reis elke week tussen Kroonstad, waar ek werk, en my huis in Cullinan. Sonja het bandopnames gemaak van dele van die teorie, waarna ek sommer op die langpad geluister het, en so ook geleer het.” Sonja het kort voor Charles se operasie gehoor dat sy kanker in die buik gehad het, en moes self ‘n operasie ondergaan. Tog sal sy saam na die Baai reis vir sy gradeplegtigheid, het Charles vertel. “Dit was ’n moeilike tyd – maar ook ’n lekker tyd. Ek het nooit gedink ons sou op ons ouderdom so iets regkry nie, maar ons almal het vasgebyt en dit saam reggekry.”

The initiative will incorporate EMC’s vision of training on production, a concept whereby students are employed in real work environment, gaining meaningful practical experience on production whilst still being trained by the College. • Our principal, Mr JJ Mbana, a national leader in the FET Sector, has served four terms as an office bearer of the South African College Principals Organisation, of which 3 terms as President. • Mr Mbana is the Executive Director and is a founding member of the Association of Colleges of South Africa. • He is also a member of the Human Resources Development Council which was established by the Deputy President of South Africa. • The chairperson of the EMC Council, Mr Gawe, served as the Secretariat and Deputy President of the Provincial FET College Employers Organisation. He has also served over 20 years on the NMMU Council. • EMC has a fully integrated Quality Management System which is a composition of quality, occupational health and safety and environmental management. • EMC received an unqualified financial audit in 2013. • A partnership with EWSETA enabled EMC to introduce a variety of new programmes within the renewable energy and water sector. This is seen as a pilot project for the establishment of green qualifications in SouthAfrica. •Anational programme focussing on sport as a vocation will be piloted at EMC. This programme is funded by NLDTF (Lotto). STUDENT UNREST LEADS TO DISTORTED QUALITY TEACHING, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT Eastcape Midlands College takes pride in equipping young people for a future career and employment opportunities and teaching them the skills needed to do so. A small group of students and external forces have unfortunately been disrupting quality teaching, learning and assessment by engaging in on-going illegal protests. Students’ grievances centred around their dissatisfaction with the allocation of the Department of Higher Education and Training’s NSFAS bursary fund. During December the College received the amendments to the 2014 rules and guidelines for the management and administration of the Department’s FET College bursary scheme. It stipulates that in order to promote access to colleges and to gradually expand the college system to accommodate more students, it is recommended that Colleges earmark at least 80% of the bursary allocation to cover the tuition fees of eligible students and 20% of the total bursary allocation to cover travel and accommodation allowances for eligible students given the availability of funds. The demand for funds unfortunately exceeds the amount allocated for bursaries. During a meeting held on 11 March 2014 the SRC continued to voice their dissatisfaction with the 80:20 ratio.Aresolution to remedy the shortage of funds was taken in submitting a letter to the Minister of Higher Education. Management consulted with all the stakeholders concerned, of which a Parent Committee played a significant role and it was agreed on a 70:30 ratio in order to alleviate the financial burden on students. For transparency purposes and unambiguous communication speaker’s notes were prepared to explain the allocation of funds to bursary recipients and were read out at all campuses. Students were also requested to return to classes with immediate effect in order to restore quality teaching, learning and assessment at all campuses. All students received a letter wherein they were advised to comply with this request in order to avoid legal action against them. The Management of EMC has furthermore implemented an academic recovery plan in order to compensate for the lecture time lost during the unrest. The Council and Management of Eastcape Midlands College eagerly and sincerely request the small group of students and all the external forces supporting them to respect the wishes of the majority of students who want to attend classes to develop their skills for a better tomorrow. The leadership of EMC will follow the cause of law should protestors not refrain from further disruptive protest action. Those who instigate unrest and fail to attend class will find themselves excluded from the academic programmes and the benefits of obtaining qualifications, to their own detriment. All the successes alluded to are ascribable to our quality teaching, learning and assessment. The current unrest deprives EMC of the chance to continue to register the successes as indicated. We therefore call on all members of the community to identify, rebuke and isolate these enemies of progress. Over 100 stalls booked for market day U itenhage Market will see its fourth appearance being held on Sunday from 09:00 at the Old Concentration Camp, next to Verwoerd Drive in Uitenhage. This time, apart from all the new stalls, there will be a go-cart timelap race with the fastest driver winning a medal! young judo star from KwaNobuhle has been invited to represent South Africa at the 6th Ippon Trophy Antwerp world judo tournament in Belgium during May 2014.

Powerlifting competition held in U’hage Powerlifting is an exciting sport where athletes compete against the force of iron as well as other athletes. Powerlifters will be heading to Uitenhage for the EC Provincial Championships which will be held at Brandwag High School on Saturday, April 12th This competition is open to all competitors, development and secondaries. A number of national lifters and current SA and Eastern

Cape champions will be in the mix. Registration and weigh-in take place on Saturday at 07:00 and the competition starts at 09:00. Winners will receive medals and there will be trophies for 1st positions. The energetic Lithemba Magajana, a Grade 7 learner at Dower Practising School, might look tiny, but he is shockingly quick and strong for his age. “He is good and we are proud of him. We practise together and I can tell you he is as strong as an ox. As parents we wish for him to represent his country in Belgium. The only problem is that we need to get funding to made this dream a reality,” said his father Mzwandile Magajana, who also started with judo training. Mzwandile is a detective at the SAPS

Kamesh branch and joined his son as members of the Gigorokano Judo Club in KwaNobuhle. The club was established in 1993 at 16 Ntlemeza Street with Monwabisi Daniels as the instructor. “We would like for Lithemba to fulfil this dream, but he needs the community’s support by means of sponsoring an air ticket and accommodation to attend this prestige event,” said Daniels. According to Ina van den Heever from Judo South Africa, which is affiliated to the International Judo Federation, the cost per athlete will amount to approximately R20 000. ‘Seeing is believing feeling is the truth’ HEILIE COMBRINCK “The singing, laughter and happy faces forced me to take a long look at my own life. These blind guys have courage as they place their hope and trust totally in others.” So said Christo Claassens a professional hunter, who assisted with the blind hunt at Hoeksfontein Safaris. It was the second consecutive year that a group of 21 blind hunters from the Institute for the Blind from Worcester was accommodated at this game farm. The expedition kicks off with the introduction of firearms to each of the blind hunters. They are then informed and guided towards the different kinds of antelope and granted the opportunity to feel the various mounted buck. The blind hunters were then allocated to different bakkies accompanied by professional hunters to guide them during the hunt. “The entire group were stars. But there was one guy who really stood out, namely Johan from Namibia. He was guided by professional hunter Neil Pretorius and shot not one but two springbuck on the day. “His favourite phrase was ‘seeing is believing, but to feel is the truth’.” According to Claassens, Hoeksfontein Safaris improves on a yearly basis when it comes to accommodating blind persons. “There are so many things that we take for granted, but its quite something to serve meals and set a table for 21 blind persons, or when they need to go back to their rooms,” said Claassens. This annual expedition for blind hunters from Worcester is made possible by Hoeksfontein Safaris owner Bennie van Niekerk, assisted by professional hunters Christo Claassens and Dr Niel Pretorius, Pepe, Hessie, various sponsors, Worcester staff Freddie Botha and Hannes Byleveldt; and Corné and Friends. “The team’s helping hands and guidance ensured safety, excitement, the feeling of belonging and happiness to these 21 blind hunt-

Algoa Toyota keeps popular bowling competition on the go Algoa Toyota in Uitenhage will this year be sponsoring the very popular Algoa Toyota Saturday Morning pairs competition for the 9th successive year. The management committee therefore invites all registered bowlers to enter pairs teams (men, ladies or mixed) in the competition which starts on 10 May 2014. The competition will be played on the following dates: 10 & 24 May, 28 June, 19 July, 16 August and 20 September 2014 (final and

prize giving). Apart from the normal prize money, the following session prizes will be handed out after each day’s play: jackpot ends; attendance draw (winning skip, losing skip, winning lead and losing lead). Melanie Asquith, Yolandi Eldridge en Pauline Swartz van die CVC sal Saterdag aan die Ysterman-kompetisie vir ondernemings deelneem, met die doel om bewustheid van die sterilisasie van troeteldiere te bevorder. Die CVC bestaan uit ’n groep vrywillige veeartse van dwars oor die metro wat maandeliks dieresorg aan gemeenskappe in plattelandse gebiede bied. Dié projek is die eerste in sy soort in die Oos-Kaap. Benewens sterilisasies, sorg hulle dat die diere ook hul inentings kry, het Asquith vertel. “Oorbevolking van troeteldiere is oral ’n probleem, en in dié gemeenskappe wat ons besoek, is daar nie voldoende dieresorg nie. Sonder die sterilisasie is daar te veel troeteldiere wat afgeskeep word en moet ly.” Hulle lewer dié diens in Kirkwood en Addo, maar die plan is om na gebiede soos Jansenville en Steytlerville uit te brei. “Ons is heeltemal afhanklik van donasies en fondsinsameling, maar ek hoop ons sal ook na dié gemeenskappe kan beweeg,” het Asquith gesê. – Odette Kemp
