Sell-out expected for Train Race REPORTER
W
ith under four weeks to the start of the inaugural Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race at the Port Elizabeth station, there are just 100 team entry slots available and fewer than 75 tickets for the passenger. It’s been 10 years since the last Train Race in the city and The 2014 NMB Train Race, partnered by Die Burger and OP Koerante, is open to teams of seven runners within the corporate, social, club and school entry categories. Leading the Corporate category with three team entries is Amobia Communications, Cacadu District Municipality and Deloittes, whilst in the Club category both Despatch AC and NMMU
have four teams whilst Graslaagte Primary School has three teams already entered. “We are overwhelmed with the response which we’ve already received from local companies for the event,” said Race Director Mike Zoetmulder of Zports. “With under four weeks to go, we are expecting a sell-out of team entries, as well as the tickets for spectators on the train.” The Train Race starts at 9am on Sunday, July 27, and will see relay teams challenging a Metrorail train between PE and Uitenhage Stations, a distance of just under 40km with the winning teams expected in at around two hours. A festival of activities will take place at the Uitenhage Station ahead of the 13:00 prize giv-

Emma warns against social media HEILIE COMBRINCK
E
mma Sadleir, a media law consultant and astounding speaker, who became wellknown as a television presenter covering the Oscar Pistorius trial, recently adressed teachers and learners on having savvy when it comes to social media. She presented a Media Savvy workshop at Collegiate Girls’ High School where she focussed on social media users’ digital footprint and how to safeguard your reputation. Her areas of expertise include all aspects of print and electronic media law, with a particular focus on social media law. Sadleir advised learners to “set a Google alert for your names and never to put anything on social media that you would not be prepared to put on a huge billboard.” She warned against “liking or sharing or re-
tweeting any negative item as you are then implicated in the negative message even if not originally yours.” Sadleir has become a role model and inspiration to many through her extensive knowledge of the pros and cons of social media. Asi Tsotsa, founder of and a representative of the bullying awareness campaign, Phly Thread, said: “We have learned so many new things, particularly about cyberbullying, and we are so excited to share our new knowledge with the rest of the school.” Much of Sadleir’s work involves creating social media strategies and policies for corporates and schools, drafting social media agency agreements and providing training and workshops on social media law. Early Christmas at Uitenhage market HEILIE COMBRINCK It might be five months too early, but it’s cold enough to host a Christmas in July with a bit of northern hemisphere Christmas outfits. This is what awaits visitors to the next Uitenhage Market day which will be held on Sunday at the Old Concentration Camp site. “We will be running a ‘Wish Tree’ on the day. Stand holders have recommend products that they sell at the market that will be beneficial to charity organisations,” said Lilly de Jong from Women In Business, the organisers of the monthly Uitenhage Market. “Tags will be hung on the tree, naming products and prices and visitors are most welcome to buy these products in support of the respective charity organisations. “As part of the fun there will be spot prizes for lucky visitors wearing Christmas hats on the day,” said De Jong. Other entertainment of the day includes a High Noon dog show and puppy training lessons for puppies under the age of 5 months, Tina’s Line Dancing, Zumba class demo and local singers like Chantelle Bosch, Deon Basson and Monique van Driel. The public are also invited to donate second hand clothes, blankets, baby equipment, toys or toiletries. ‘Bly kalm en ondersteun die koor’ HEILIE COMBRINCK “Woorde kan beslis nie ons skool se dankbaarheid teenoor die gemeenskap beskryf vir hulle belangstelling en ondersteuning van ons skoolkoor nie!” So sê Lana du Plessis van Hoërskool Despatch na die afgelope naweek se fondsinsameling vir die koor wat deurgedring het na die ATKV Applous finale in Pretoria. Vier onderwysers het die winterkoue aangedurf en die hele naweek spandeer op ’n vier meter hoë stelasie by Despatch Superspar. “Die onderwysers het twee nagte die koue getrotseer in ‘n poging om die skoolkoor te ondersteun. ‘n Bedrag van byna R25 000 is in-
gesamel,” het Du Plessis gesê. Hoërskool Despatch se koor onder leiding van Lynne Gouws, het uit 175 kore van regoor die land deurgedring na die kompetisie-finale wat vanaf 30 Julie tot 1 Augustus in Pretoria gehou word. Volgens Du Plessis beloop die onkostes van die koor om aan dié finale deel te neem sowat R150 000. “Koorlede wend verskeie pogings aan om fondse in te samel.” Hoërskool Despatch bedank graag ook Paul Barnes van Despatch Superspar wat die fondsinsameling heelhartig ondersteun het. Dié Superspar het alle etes en verversings aan die vier brawe onderwysers op die toring voorsien.

Brandwag se eerste span het vanjaar in die o.18-afdeling van die nasionale netbaluitkloptoernooi deelgeneem. Die span het hulself as kampioen van die

A total of 10 000 microdots are fitted to each vehicle in convert areas. Hannes and Johan are responsible for the micro dotting. Auto Works also do verification of vehicles, thus determining the history of the vehicle. Micro dotting and performance upgrading Auto Works mechanical and technical services has become a leader in the local vehicle service business. The business with Johan Jonker as owner, is an entity on its own and not related to any other service business in the Metro. Although they service a variety of vehicle brands, they specialize in Volkswagen, Audi and BMW motorcycles Chipbox for better performance Knowing the motor sport industry and once a keen contestant on the track, Johan simply loves powerful engines and solid mechanical performance. He has experience in vehicle modifications and performance upgrades. Hence he also installs Chipbox plug ’n play systems at Auto Works. This not only enhances an engine’s power and torque but also results in less fuel consumption. The Chipbox performance enhancer is applicable to all new generation turbo charged engines. Auto airconditioning The highly experienced Rudolph and Luandré, previously with Mobile Aircon Services, have joined the Auto Works team and can service any mobile air-conditioning. They even travel to Patensie and other farming areas to service air-conditioning in harvest machinery and other heavy duty equipment. Auto Works has the capacity to manufacture custom made hoses and fittings to fit air-conditioning and they also supply parts. Retro fitting is one of their specialities where they can modify outdated aircons to be in line with the latest ozone friendly technologies.
Approved auto service business Auto Works has Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI) accreditation. Being part of RMI means that Auto Works is part of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) as well. As consumer awareness and knowledge increase, the demand for quality services and parts has become a prerequisite for any vehicle repair establishment that wants to prosper. Auto Works is BEE compliant and approved by Santam, MBI, SA Warranties and Motor Rite. This allows Auto Works to deliver additional services in handling the insurance claims for these institutions. Fleet cards are also accepted at Auto Works. Johan and his team Johan is assisted by his wife Lucille who is responsible for the office administration and managerial aspects whilst their daughter Luzaan handles the DataDot section as well as various other day to day responsibilities. Charlene handles the service bookings whilst Ryan is the head technician assisted by Corné and Eugene. Sipho assists with all cleaning duties and Almary is reliable for taking clients to their destinations while their vehicles are being attended to. Scene set for spectator spectacular rally action The Volkswagen Rally takes place on Friday and Saturday, 11 and 12 July and the start point is the traditional ceremonial start at AutoPavilion in Uitenhage. The event has a new final stage and finish – at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday afternoon. There is also a new Super Special stage next to Port Elizabeth Oval Track Raceway (PEOTR) and the scene has been set for another exciting pair of evening stages in Jeffrey’s Bay. “We’ve put a lot of effort into making this a spectator spectacular,” says Joe Fourie, route director of the Volkswagen Rally. “The stages are accessible,
there are plenty of spectating opportunities and we also have two Super Special stages to maximise the action.” The Algoa Rally Club organises and runs the Volkswagen Rally every year, with a longstanding sponsorship from Volkswagen South Africa. “We’re expecting a field of approximately 25 Algoa Rally Club entries,” says Neville Bartle, chairman of the Algoa Rally Club (ARC). “It looks like this will be one of our biggest rally fields this year and we are aiming to put on a good show for the fans.” The most successful rally team of the year wins a regional championship prize to the total value of R50 000.

The official attendance for last Saturday’s game between South Africa and Scotland was 40 973, making it the best attended test match of the 4 match incoming tour series. The Eastern Province Rugby Union thanked the people of Nelson Mandela Bay, the greater Eastern Cape and elsewhere for coming out in their numbers to support the test match held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium last Saturday afternoon. “It was an amazing atmosphere. Nelson Mandela Bay have once again shown that they support top flight rugby in the province and for that we are truly thankful,” said EP
Rugby CEO Charl Crous. Crous said that while it was not a complete sellout it was the best attended as the World XV brought in just over 30 000, Kings Park hosted 38 000 and Mbombela Stadium hosted around 25 500. EP Rugby President, Cheeky Watson, said the fact that Nelson Mandela Bay came out and supported top flight rugby strengthened the region’s position when it came to securing future tests and other events. “People in the Eastern Cape love rugby and want to see more of it and we are going to do what we can to make that happen,” said Watson.

Wat dié wen besonders maak is dat die span van NMMU hoofsaaklik uit gekontrakteerde o.19 en o.21 OP-spelers bestaan teenoor Despatch se span wat geen gekontrakteerde spelers het nie. Dit is die derde jaar in ‘n ry dat Despatch die o.21 trofee wen. NMMU het die afgelope drie jaar in die finaal teen Despatch te staan gekom en elke keer verloor.
