ie Swartkopsrivier is só erg besoedel dat ’n inwoner Hepatitis A daar opgedoen het, het ’n Baaise dokter beweer.

Dr. Peter Schwartz het aan Die Burger, die UD Nuus se susterskoerant, gesê sy pasiënt het onlangs ’n oester by die mond van die rivier geëet en het die virus opgedoen. Volgens hom het hy toestemming van sy pasiënt gekry om die Nelson Mandelabaai-metropool hieroor in kennis te stel in die hoop dat die metro die besoedelingskwessie sou pak. Schwartz het gesê sy pasiënt het twee weke nadat sy die oester geëet het wat hulle onder die brug by die Swartkopsriviermond gevind het, die algemene simptome van Hepatitis A ondervind, wat moegheid en naarheid insluit. Schwartz het gesê Hepatitis A word opgedoen deur besoedelde water en kos, veral skulpvis. “Hepatitis A het ’n inkubasietydperk van twee weke. Daar is dus ’n hoë korrelasie tussen wanneer my pasiënt die oester geëet en sy die simptome ervaar het. Ons het uitgebreide toetse gedoen en gevind dat haar lewerensieme baie hoog is. “My vraag is of dié ’n geïsoleerde voorval is en of ander gevalle onaangemeld verbygaan. Ek het ’n etiese plig om ander bewus te maak van die gevare,” het dr. Schwartz gesê. Brenda Matthee, DA-raadslid en lid van die metro se openbare gesondheid-komitee wat haar beywer om die besoedeling van riviere hok te slaan, meen daar moet iets drasties gedoen word om die metro se riviere weer veilig te maak. “Ons riviere maak ons siek. Moet iemand eers doodgaan voordat die munisipaliteit die situasie as kritiek gaan beskou? En die somerseisoen is reg voor die deur. Ek was vroeër by die Swartkops en daar was soveel vissermanne wat daar visgevang het. Min weet hulle die gevaar wat in daardie vangste van hulle skuil,” het Matthee gesê. Sy het verder gesê die minste wat die metro dan moet doen, is om kennisgewingborde op te sit om inwoners oor die gevare te waarsku, sodat hulle ingeligte besluite kan neem oor of hulle op eie risiko die riviere wil gebruik vir swem of visvang. Kupido Baron, munisipale woordvoerder, het die ontvangs van Schwartz se brief bevestig. Volgens hom moet die voorval by die provinsiale gesondheidsdepartement op ’n amptelike siektekennisgewingvorm aangemeld word. “Ons neem kennis dat die geneesheer nie die belangrike voorgeskrewe protokol gevolg het nie en dat as gevolg daarvan waardevolle tyd verlore gegaan het,” het Baron gesê.

In Uitenhage the local SPCA is hosting a walk-a-kennel-dog on Saturday at 09:00. “We urge the public to please show compassion, bring a leash and collar and assist us in walking the dogs. It would be ideal if each dog at the kennel could be afforded a walk,” said Elinda Tonnesen from Uitenhage SPCA. )An animal blessing service will be held on Saturday at 10:00. Teen die 1970’s was hulle reeds die voorste koper, verwerker en uitvoerder van Suid-Afrikaanse wol. Drie jaar voor Rudi se dood in 1995 het sy enigste seun, Philip, die voorsitterskap oorgeneem - die posisie wat hy steeds beklee. Sy vier susters is almal aandeelhouers in die maatskappy. “My voorgeslagte het oor die vermoë beskik om hulself te herskep en nie die risiko te vrees wat verandering meebring nie. Wat ook in ons guns tel, is dat ons ’n multiveselmaatskappy is wat nie net in wol en bokhaar spesialiseer nie, maar deur ons filiaal, Stucken Melchers in Bremen, ook skaars vesels soos kasjmier, alpakka, sy, kameelhaar, bamboes, soja en linne koop en verwerk. The Despatch Police would like to warn the community regarding the theft out of and from motor vehicles in town. “We request the residents to assist the police by taking the precautionary measures in safeguarding their vehicles,” said Superintendent Vuyiswe Tembani, Station Commissioner of Despatch Police. According to W/O Marianette Olivier, criminals are currently targeting any kind of vehicle that is standing outside during night time. “Although it is widely spread most of the incidents occurred in Heuwelkruin and the Retief areas. In the latest incidents the windows of the vehicles were broken to gain entry,” said W/O Olivier. The police appeal to vehicle owners to please be more security conscious by installing alarm systems or immobilizers in

their vehicles. Also do not leave any items and especially valuable items in vehicles, not even in the glove compartment. “Criminals break into vehicles and cause great damage even if there is nothing taken. If possible lock your vehicle inside a garage. “We are also appealing to anyone who witnesses criminal activities occurring in their midst or who notices vehicles driving without numberplates to contact the Despatch police or Crime Stop number,” said W/O Olivier. Ultra distance athlete wins AfriSave marathon S

outh African ultra distance runner and winner of the 2011 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, George Ntshiliza, was the first to cross the winning line in the Afri-Save Marathon held last Saturday.

Afri Save sponsored various prizes for the marathon winners which was handed over by Munir Jeeva, Director: AfriSave Cash & Carry. During the awards ceremony he also handed-over a cash cheque of R10 000 towards Muirite Striders AAC. Winners of the 42.2km were: (Men): 1. George Ntshiliza (Nedbank Running Club) 2:38:00 (won R600); 2. Mila Pasiya (Nedbank Running Club) 2:39:04 (won R400); 3. Malikhaya Malinga (Motherwell Running Club) 2:52:42 (won R300). (Women): 1. 2011 Hyundai ix35 2.0 GL Athletes tackled not only gruelling distances during this annual marathon and 10km road race held in Uitenhage and Despatch, but also windy weather and cold conditions. The event was organised in accordance with the rules of ASA and EPA by Muirite Striders Amateur Athletics Club and Afri Save Cash & Carry with the start and finishing points at Muir College. A 5km fun run was also held and the 42.2km is a qualifier for the Two Oceans and Comrades in 2014.
