DP is beste brugbouers in SA HEILIE COMBRINCK Hoër Tegniese Skool Daniel Pienaar se brugbouspan is vanjaar die wenners van die SuidAfrikaanse Instituut vir Siviele Ingenieurs se nasionale brugboukompetisie. Dié span het die Oos-Kaap verteenwoordig en was een van 19 streekspanne van regoor die land wat hulle kennis en vernuf moes inspan om die sterkste brug te bou. Volgens Michael du Preez, adjunkhoof van HTS Daniel Pienaar, het die spanne ses ure tyd gehad om ‘n brug te ontwerp en bou met spesifieke vereistes en ‘n spanwydte van 800mm.

“Elke span het 25 houtstokkies van 4x4mm en 600mm lank ontvang, sowel as gom en ‘n drie meter lange stuk tou,” het Du Preez verduidelik. “Dit was ‘n baie strawwe kompetisie, maar die Tiere se span het ‘n brug gebou wat ’n gewig van 78.4kg kon dra. Die brug was simmetries akkuraat en esteties ook die mooiste van al die brûe.” Brugbou-spanne bestaan uit maksimum drie lede en Daniel Pienaar se wenspan het bestaan uit Daniel Lourens, Jacques van Staden en Nico Barnard. HTS Daniel Pienaar bedank graag die brugbouspan se hoofborg, Grinaker LTA, vir hulle ondersteuning van die span.

VWSA rallies to SPCA’s assistance REPORTER Over 120 keen Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) motorcyclists, including their friends and families, rallied together at the weekend in aid of furry four-legged animals being cared for by the Uitenhage SPCA.

We managed to raise a total of R17 000 and over 100kg of pet food,” said James Rishworth of VWSA’s Final Assembly. Elinda Tonnesen (Chairperson of the Uitenhage SPCA management board) was ecstatic at the response to the call for donations. “We are extremely grateful to VWSA’s employees for their involvement and support of our annual Animal Run. It is a result of one of society’s illnesses - being neglected and rejected by irresponsible parents. “A little boy in Market Street once asked me for food. I ignored him. When I reached Caledon Street, I turned back as I realised how hopeless he must feel without a mother, a home, no food, no love,” said Thembisa Vusani, who has established God’s Haven to take care of homeless children. “I went back and took the boy and his fellow street children to Hungry Lion and bought them food.” Vusani recently treated street kids and served them with a healthy home-cooked meal at the Uitenhage Town Hall. Representatives from several institutions, namely from SASA, Social Devel-

opment, the Police, Department of Education, Home Affairs and VWSA Community Trust were invited too. “The community needs to take responsibility. Homeless children is a growing problem in the country and cannot be ignored any longer. These children grow up and become adults without identity as they have no relatives, no references, no money and thus they can not have identity books. We all know there is no future without an identity. “They can not be ignored as I once did. They need to be educated and trained, they need to have a place of shelter, they need food.” According to Vusani she was given the option by authorities to make use of the former Ikhaya Lothando premises as a place of shelter. These buildings at the bottom of Cannon Street have unfortunately been demolished by the community.

Dié hoogtepunt in die ensemble se bestaan is om 19:00 in die H.T. Gamble Saal in Thomas Gamble. Die ensemble is in 2009 begin nadat die kerkraad en gemeente besef het dat iets daadwerlik gedoen moet word om die jongmense wat jaarliks tot volle lidmaatskap aan-

ding van Shirl-kirwin de Boer en Vernitio Elie. Die ensemble word deur die gemeente beskou as ‘n inspirasie vir jonger lede en die belangstelling is oorweldigend. Die snitte op die CD is van verskillende genres wat vir die oor van beide oud en jonk bedoel is. Die rede vir die verkoop van die CD’s is om instrumente aan te koop en sodoende alle lede en belanghebbendes te akkomodeer en om meer houtblaas instrumente soos klarinette, saksofone en fluite te koop, omdat hierdie instrumente ook groot belang-

stelling wek, veral by dogters. ‘n Beroep word op ouers gedoen om hul kinders wat belangstelling in musiek toon, aan te moedig om by die Ensemble aan te sluit. Brandwag het op Cradock 49-33 met Augsburg Landbou Gimnasium van Clanwilliam afgereken. Die afdeling waarin ’n skool deelneem, word bepaal deur die hoeveelheid rugbyspanne wat die skool het. Brandwag, met ongeveer 330 seuns, ding mee in die medium-afdeling vir skole wat 5 tot 9 spanne het.

Brandwag was rustyd reeds 24-7 voor en het eindelik die oorwinning met ses drieë beklink. Morney Moos het ’n driekuns drieë gedruk.
