It’s go time as the third leg of the 2013/14 IRB World Sevens Series hits the Bay on Saturday! Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) and the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium touted the economic value of the event, the “honour of being the South Africa city which is privileged to host the event” and the importance of it for brand and destination promotion. NMBT chief executive, Mandlakazi Skefile, said, “This is definitely a time to harness the opportunity to showcase the city’s potential for family and sports activities, as we look forward to sharing a warm Nelson Mandela Bay welcome with players and spectators.” Skefile said the iconic Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is an influential asset and draw card for the destination in its ability to host world class events such as the Cell C Nelson Mandela Bay 7s tournament. MD of Access Management, Rian Oberholzer, said that collaborations amongst all stakeholders was crucial to ensure that a world class event is delivered. According to NMBT, unique events such as the Sevens bring about an influx of visitors to the city’s many tourist attractions and activities. NMBT has ensured its readiness for the event by creating the Rugby 7’s Pass packages. The packages include discount accommodation rates, car rental as well as free or discounted entry into a variety of attractions and activities. To top it, tickets to the Sevens tournament are also included. The action-packed Sevens tournament is being hosted for the third time since Nelson Mandela Bay was appointed as the host venue in 2011. “Nelson Mandela Bay is ready to kick off the 48-hours of non-stop action. Grab your NMB Rugby 7s pass package and tickets to enjoy an action packed summer at the NMB Stadium and surrounding attractions,” added Skefile.

Medicine student heads off to Cuba HEILIE COMBRINCK

A student from Uitenhage, Kurt Marney, is one of the 100 Eastern Cape students selected from 5 000 applicants to study medicine at a university in Havana, Cuba. Like the well known Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara who studied medicine and once said “I dreamed of working indefatigably to discover something which would be used to help humanity, but which signified a personal triumph for me,” it also is a life-long dream of Marney to become a medical doctor. Marney was the deputy head boy of Uitenhage High School during 2012 and received a Maths and Science bursary from the school’s past-pupil and teacher’s association. At the beginning of 2013 he enrolled at Nelson Mandela Metropole University to study BSc. “I now have to learn to speak Spanish, as the studies will be conducted in this foreign language,” said Marney. “Apart from studying medicine, I also look forward to the vibrancy of the Cubans, especially their music. I love jazz and would definitely like to learn to play the guitar the way

the Cubans do.” “Another exciting prospect is to play volleyball in Cuba. They are excellent at this sport and I have played for NMMU as well as Uitenhage High and would like to participate in this sport on the lovely Cuban beaches.” The Eastern Cape students will join 900 other students from across South Africa who will also enrol at Cuban institutions in 2014 to study medicine. According to Msimeleli Ngaphi, a senior manager at the provincial health department, they had budgeted more than R30 million for the selected students from the class of 2013. “I want to thank Mr Gary Hendricks, a teacher at Uitenhage High, who encouraged me to apply for this programme. Thank you also to Mrs Dubase from the health department for her assistance and to my parents for their support.” The duration of the studies abroad is six years and on completion, it is expected of these students to return to South Africa and serve in their respective communities. Marney will one day after completion of his studies, plough back his knowledge at the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital.

Holiday fun at science centre Fascinating experiments await children between the ages of 4 and 16 years at the Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technology Centre in Uitenhage this holiday. There will be activities like Bubble Trouble, which is a messy but fun bubble based investigation that will allow children to explore how mixing materials can change the way water behaves. According to Singathwa Poswa from the science centre, the theme is Materials Matter and “kids will learn about the materials around us and its fascinating properties through various hands-on

activities.” One of the experiments will be Floaters and Sinkers. A fascinating fact about water is that some materials sink into it whilst other float. In this activity the properties of materials that make them float will be investigated. Activities will be from 9-13 December (10:00-14:30) at the science centre in Upper Drostdy Street, Uitenhage. loveLife centre celebrates 1st year

s the R20-million Volkswagen loveLife Youth Centre in KwaNobuhle celebrates its first year anniversary, manager Themba Maseti has announced several successes as well as bold plans for the year ahead. Opened last year to coincide with World Aids Day on 1 December, the Volkswagen loveLife “Y-Centre” – funded by a joint Volkswagen AG and IG Metal donation – was described as “an invaluable asset to the community” by Volkswagen Group South Africa

managing director David Powels. The Y-Centre was built to provide the youth of KwaNobuhle and the greater Uitenhage area with a safe haven where they can play sport and interact with their peers and adults. It is also equipped with a youth-friendly clinic offering specialised HIV and Aids advice, as well as counselling and support services for teenagers and parents. Over the past 12 months the centre has been involved in outreach programmes to the 20 schools in the area, reaching over 20 000

young people. Statistics provided by the centre show that it has not only become an invaluable asset in counselling the youth of KwaNobuhle, which has a total population of about 90 000, but it has also helped to launch several promising careers. “The support that we have received from Volkswagen Group South Africa has meant so much. It has helped us achieve a lot over this past year,” said Maseti. “We have a long and proud history of

community upliftment in the Uitenhage area, with the opening of the loveLife Y-Centre being one of the flagships,” commented VWSA Director of Corporate and Government Affairs Nonkqubela Maliza. “The centre is a positive and empowering catalyst for the community’s youth. “With all the educational and informative programmes undertaken in the past year, I believe the youth are now more equipped to build better lives for themselves,” said Nonkqubela Maliza.

Meldorama success “Six months later, now that the project has been concluded for 2013 it was exactly that, but an experience that none of us will ever forget. “After we had restored the inner workings of the Moth Hall, repaired what was left of the current backdrops, repainted the new ones and manufactured new props to accompany our physical prowess on stage – we still had to sort out the bar, sell tickets, organise and pack peanuts, organise sound, lighting and still try and have a bit of fun in the process,” said Eramsus. Melodrama 2013 was a huge success and if all goes according to plan the two social clubs of Uitenhage will be back on stage next year!

The Uitenhage Round Table 14 and Uitenhage Lions Club joined their talents in this year’s Melodrama and it proved to be an astounding success. “We would like to thank all those in the local community who gave their support for this year’s show. The proceeds raised were in excess of R50 000, and the distribution of these funds will take place when each of the two clubs has its respective charity distributions,” said Lions Club president, Barend Erasmus. When the idea was revived, it was always understood that Melodrama was a great project but to get it back to its former glory was going to be a mammoth task.

Riebeek girls donate R12 000 to SPCA F

ollowing a year of much fund-raising, Riebeek College proudly handed over a staggering R12 000 to the Uitenhage SPCA. Civvies Days, cake sales, colouring-in competitions were undertaken to raise money for a cause close to the hearts of the Riebeek girls. Setting the high standard were the Riebeek Grade 4 girls who showed true determination in their fund-raising efforts. Janet Skeates,

Noddy’s party well attended The Uitenhage Lions Club recently held their 21st Noddy’s Party at Fonteinshoek Animal Farm in the Kruisrivier area. A total of 70 children and 90 adults attended the party with Father Christmas and Tinkerbelle handing out the presents to the children.

“The Lions Club of Uitenhage wishes to thank the public for their support as well as Gert and Daleen van Jaarsveld for making available their premises that included the Noddy trailer and tractor which the children enjoyed tremendously,” said Lions President Barend Erasmus.

Sy het vier jaar gelede begin met een kind in haar dagsorg. Vandag sien sy en haar span van ses vroue om na 35 babas en kleuters in ‘n nuwe perseel by Hoofstraat 91C op die dorp. Die dagsorg groei steeds en met ingang Januarie 2014 open Babbelbekkies se nuwe baba-afdeling. “By Babbelbekkies is ons trots op die huislike

atmosfeer wat hier heers en dit is vir ons belangrik om liefdevol op te tree teenoor al die kinders,” sê Alma. Uniek aan Babbelbekkies is die boekies wat in elke kind se naam uitgereik word en waarin volledig op ‘n daaglikse basis verslag gedoen word oor elke kind se doen en late en welstand. “Dit is ‘n baie effektiewe manier van kommunikasie tussen ons en die ouers.”

Alma en haar span sien om na kinders tussen die ouderdomme van 2 maande en 5 jaar. Daar is drie afsonderlike opvoedingsprogramme waarby die kinders inskakel naamlik: Babaafdeling (2 maande - 2 jaar); Kreatiwiteits- & Kunsprogram (3-jariges) en die Opvoedkundige program ter voorbereiding vir graad R (4 & 5jariges). InnoWind (Pty) Ltd is proposing to develop a wind energy facility between Uitenhage and Kirkwood within the Sundays River Valley Local Municipality and the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The proposed project will entail the construction and operation of approximately 60 (sixty) turbines each generating 3 Mega Watts (MW) of power. Turbines will have a hub height of 100 meters with blades of 56 meter length. The proposed development will cover an area of approximately 7,300 hectares.
