he President of the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA), Dr Johan van Zyl, warned that prolonged industrial action which had paralysed the operations at the seven major vehicle manufacturing plants in South Africa, had entered a critical phase and had also had a negative cascade effect throughout the automotive manufacturing and supply chain in South Africa.
The manufacturers affected include BMW South Africa, Ford Motor Company SA, General Motors South Africa, Mercedes-Benz South Africa, Nissan South Africa, Toyota SA Motors and Volkswagen Group SA. “The vehicle and automotive component manufacturing industry, including exports, accounted for approximately 30% of South Africa’s manufacturing output and about 4,5% of the country’s gross domestic product, whilst the broader South African motor industry, including retail/distribution/servicing and repairs, accounted for 7,5% of South Africa’s GDP,” said Dr Van Zyl. “The strike will result in lower economic growth, lower domestic and export production and sales, reduced industry profitability, substantial loss of income to workers, loss of revenue to the fiscus, lower foreign direct investment into South Africa and ultimately less employment. “There are no winners in a strike situation in the vehicle manufacturing industry which provides stable employment with, by South African standards, attractive and high quality employment conditions, remuneration levels and benefits”. Dr Van Zyl continued to say that the double digit offer by employers is reasonable and highly competitive compared to settlements in other sectors and in relation to inflation. The industry is not just offering a very high across the board (ATB) increase but also a transport allowance, increase in shift allowance and short time allowance. The workers will also receive a cash allowance coupled to an additional across the board increase to equalise wages in the industry. “This offer from the Auto Motor Industry amounts to a total increase of more than 30% over the three year period and is the best ever offered in the history of collective bargaining in the industry”. “We urge NUMSA to continue with their effort to bring the strike to an end and workers to accept our settlement offer. We are looking forward to a speedy return by all of our employees to work.”

Business hub hopes to create jobs
T
he Uitenhage Business Hub was launched last Friday, with the vision of creating 20 000 jobs over the next 20 years. With youth unemployment approaching 50% in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro according to 2011 Census data, three entrepreneurs, Elaine Camoetie, Yusuf Moses and Ramon Thomas have decided to take up the challenge to create local employment opportunities. “Since the merge of the municipalities 10 years ago there’s been a growing resentment among the people of Uitenhage. Residents urged to refrain from illegal dumping In an effort to stop the “out-of-control” dumping of waste by residents at the 15 closed waste drop-off sites and temporary skips in Despatch and Uitenhage, the municipality has issued a stern warning that offenders might be fined. In a notice published by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, it is said that the Waste Management Subdirectorate has closed these sites as a result of “circumstances beyond its control.” According to Councillor Pieter Terblanche, these sites have been closed since the contract for the removal of the bins expired at the end of June 2013 Residents are requested to take their waste to the Koedoeskloof disposal site. The operating hours are Mondays to Saturdays 07:30-17:00 and Sundays 09:00-17:00. In the notice it is urged that residents should refrain from dumping waste “on any land or road other than a licensed site approved by the municipality.” )It is regarded as an offence and residents might be fined up to R2 000. Wheelchair brings new lease of life HEILIE COMBRINCK The donation of a wheelchair has opened a new world for Jannie Kruger from Uitenhage, as he can now be more mobile to visit friends and family and even accompany his wife to shopping malls. Kruger was one of the beneficiaries from the Wednesday Wheelchair 2013 campaign organised by the Association of the Physically Disabled (APD) in conjunction with Spar EC Group. The community was invited to nominate disabled persons who are in need of a wheelchair. Uitenhage Lions Club nominated three persons which included Kruger. “I am very thankful towards the Lions for making it possible to now own a wheelchair. I was diagnosed with muscular atrophy, a disease which results in a progressive disintegrating of muscles in my legs and arms,” said Jannie Kruger. Subsequent to his retirement in 1994 his movements are restricted to not more than 20 metres with a cane. Denis Murphy from the Uitenhage Lions Club said; “The degeneration of the disease limited his external movement. He also feared people would accidentally knock him off his feet when using a cane. “This wheelchair has provided him with a new lease on life,” said Murphy. The Uitenhage Lions Club President, Barend Erasmus, wishes to thank APD and all sponsors for improving the quality of life of Jannie and the other nominees who also received wheelchairs.

The ‘happiest’ fun run on the planet! =The “happiest 5km on the planet” it was indeed! Spring Day was welcomed in the Nelson Mandela Bay last Sunday with the first ever Color Run on the African continent. More than 9 000 people participated in the fun event which is a colourful paint race to celebrate happiness and health. The organisers indicated that they were happy with the fantastic turnout and that the Color Run might be back in 2014! UWC alumni weekend The University of the Western Cape (UWC) invites all graduates and past students in Uitenhage and surrounding areas to attend the 60s and 70s Alumni Reunion Weekend from 4 to 6 October at its Bellville campus. The aim of the event is to welcome back the founding graduates to reconnect, share their stories and see how the institution is building on the foundation of their legacy. According to Myolisi Gophe from the Department for Institutional Advancement at the University of the Western
Cape, there were 17 students in the University’s first graduation ceremony in 1953, and now more than 4 000 students graduate annually. The weekend-long programme is open to all UWC alumni and will include a breakfast with the Rector, a formal dance, a jazz evening, campus tours, and an afternoon programme of fun for the family and a remembrance service. Dit is die hoogste toekenning wat ’n student op B-Tech vlak in ingenieurswese by ’n universiteit van tegnologie kan ontvang. ’n Spesiale toekenning word gemaak aan die beste manlike sowel as vroulike student in die land met die doel om ingenieurswese as beroep vir vroue te bemark. Hierdie toekennings word toegeken gebaseer op akademiese resultate. Anna-Marie Basson (neé Claassen) is aangewys as die beste vroulike B-Tech ingenieurstudent in Suid Afrika vir 2011. “Hierdie toekenning was ’n groot verrassing, veral omdat dit twee jaar is sedert ek gradeer het. Ek is ongelooflik trots en voel ge-eer om erkenning te kry vir my harde werk,” het Anna-Marie Basson gesê. “My doelwit was om my graad met Cum Laude te slaag, maar ek het nooit gedink ek sal die beste resultate in Suid-Afrika behaal nie.” Sy is ’n oud-skolier van Hoërskool Despatch en het haar ingenieursgraad by Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit behaal. Sy werk tans as spesialis industriële ingenieur by Schnellecke Logistics, ’n internasionale maatskappy wat die logistiek behartig vir onder andere motorvervaardigingsmaatskappye soos Volkswagen Suid-Afrika, Ford, Nissan en BMW.

Motsepe Foundation to ‘invest’ in Metro’s people The Motsepe Foundation has made available R10 million towards the establishment of long-term, sustainable, developmental and upliftment project and inititatives in the Nelson Mandela Metropole. The Foundation was established in 1999 by business leader Patrice Motsepe and his wife Dr Precious Motsepe with the aim to embark on a wide range of philanthropic projects. During the Foundation’s recent road show in the Metro a Metro-Motsepe Foundation Funding Committee and Forum were elected. Funding and support will be provided for charitable, educational, religious, healthcare and other projects and initiatieves. 3G inisiatief daag Despatchers uit! HEILIE COMBRINCK “Die 3G gemeenskapsinisiatief daag elke Despatcher uit om sy moue op te rol en verantwoordelikheid te neem vir ‘n gesonder, gelukkiger, gesinsgemeenskap.” So beskryf ds. Frikkie Marais, die stigter van die 3G Fees, waarom dit belangrik is dat die hele gemeenskap by dié inisiatief betrokke behoort te raak. Tydens die week van 28 September tot 6 Oktober gaan skole, kerke, besighede en gemeenskapsorganisasies sowel as inwoners hande vat om projekte van verbetering op die dorp aan te pak. “Dit is ons hoop en vooruitsig om ‘n milieu te skep waar ons al die uitdagings wat voor ons staan as ‘n gemeenskap saam aandurf. “Ons glo dat dit alleen moontlik is as ons ‘n interafhanklike kultuur vestig waarin ons mekaar se belange op die hart dra, me-
kaar ondersteun en in ons gemeenskap belê,” het Ds. Marais gesê. Die 3G inisiatief moedig daarom Despatch-inwoners aan om plaaslike besighede te ondersteun. Dié besighede word ook versoek om gesonde besigheidsverhoudinge te handhaaf. “Besighede word genooi om hulle tot die 3G-inisiatief te verbind. Elke winkel sal voorsien word van evaluasie-kaartjies. Kliënte kan dit invul en in die 3G posbus by CMR Despatch ingooi.” Volgens Ds. Marais is hulle ook opgewonde om “Character Transformation” aan boord te ontvang by die 3G-inisiatief. “Ek weet dat plaaslike skole en die CMR reeds baie opgewonde is oor hierdie stuk gereedskap vir gemeenskapontwikkeling.” Vir meer inligting oor die 3G Fees e-pos ds. Multiple award-winning Cape Town-based soprano Vanessa Tait-Jones will be hosting a singing workshop at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) on Saturday. Tait-Jones is a lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch and also works in voice rehabilitation at Tygerberg Hospital. She also manages rehabilitation programmes for singers who have damaged their voices owing to incorrect vocal application. Awards include the ATKV Muziqanto competition and a Kanna award at this year’s KKNK festival as a member of the South African Sopranos. The workshop will be hosted in the NMMU Music Department (South Campus) from 10:00. The cost of the three-hour workshop is R100. Applications are invited from suitably qualified experienced employees to fill the above position, based at a large Automotive manufacturer. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES • Implement the manufacturer warranty at all African Importers. • Support the Training Academy with the development of training material on the warranty system and warranty processes. • Monitor the training level of all African Importers and ensure that they are compliant. • Provide 1st level telephonic support to African Importers in line with manufacturer requirements. • Compile regular newsletters to African Importers on topical warranty matters. • Conduct warranty audits, either desktop or at African Importers to determine the state of warranty processes at African Importers.
