olkswagen Group South Africa’s (VWSA) popular heritage centre - the AutoPavilion - celebrated 10 years of educating and enthralling visitors this past Saturday. “It is a remarkable achievement that the AutoPavilion has been providing motoring enthusiasts with the opportunity to learn more about Volkswagen and get to experience some of the great exhibits we have to offer. The AutoPavilion is truly a place of cars and legends”, says the AutoPavilion manager Buyile Gqubule. On 1 March 2004 VWSA opened the doors of the only automobile discovery centre in Af-
rica and to date over 454 000 school groups, students, foreign and local tourists have been arriving in their droves to enjoy the latest technology and edutainment offered at the AutoPavilion. “The AutoPavilion - the place of cars and legends - takes visitors through a journey of Volkswagen’s history in South Africa. The museum also features a collection of cars, including unique vehicles, high-tech prototypes and record-breaking cars,” said Gqubule. Highlights include a cut-through Volkswagen Beetle that opens and closes, the Karmann Ghia, the last Volkswagen Citi Golf, the

he third Uitenhage Market organised by Women in Business was held last Sunday, this time at a new venue and an astonishing 4 300 visitors made their way to the Festival Grounds off Verwoerd Drive.
“We were inundated with compliments regarding the new venue, the wide variety of entertainment available for children and the general festive feeling of the market,” said Angelique Nell, Women in Business public relations manager. She also said that the new venue offers the opportunity for the market to grow tremendously in future. A total of 135 stalls were present at the mar-
ket day offering a wide diversity of products on sale from furniture, decor items, clothing, jewellery, recycled products, plants and herbs to arts and crafts. “The food court had stalls offering a gastronomic feast with items like cheese sticks, corn dogs, burgers, cheese grillers, salads and fried chicken, potjiekos and other mouthwatering eats and treats.” The market was enjoyed by the masses sitting under trees listening to music of Gerry Claasen and Chantelle Bosch. Also present was Animals in Wonderland with their reptiles and animals as well as High Noon Dog School who gave an entertaining dog show. “We would like to thank all the stand holders for their support and understanding during our relocation and also our sponsors for
their loyalty. “Thanks also to the trustees of the Old Concentration Camp Grounds for all their support and assistance in our project and to Popsi the Clown, who is located on the grounds and assisted us with preparations at such short notice,” said Nell. Die fees het Donderdagaand afgeskop met DJ Ossewa se vertoning wat meer as 700 toeskouers gelok het. Saterdagaand het die feestelikheid tot laat voortgeduur. Stalletjieeienaars en kunstenaars was ewe tevrede met die organisasie en reëlings rakende die fees. Op die foto is die skare laat Saterdagmiddag voor die verhoog waar bekende sangers opgetree het. Cycling legends support SPCA C
ycling legend Martin Nefdt has reassembled his 1967 Springbok track team and participated in a 55km cycling event in aid of abused and abandoned animals. The group of approximately 30 sponsored riders which consisted of several local celebrities and sporting personalities joined the team to ride in The Herald VW Cycle Tour as a fundraiser for the Uitenhage SPCA. “It was fantastic. Absolutely fabulous to see the support of the people,” said Martin Nefdt, who was inspired to cycle for a good cause by his brother Louis, who is chairman of the East London SPCA. “They are battling financially as state
funding is pretty poor.” The group raised funds and donated a trailer load full of non-perishable food. Leading the bunch on a tandem was Nefdt (65) who runs the local Puma agency together with seven-time SA sprint champion Willie Marx (70). In their glory days, the former SA champions and rivals performed before capacity crowds at the Westbourne Oval, breaking numerous individual records between them. Nefdt and Marx were also the last Springbok pair to race the tandem event at the world track championships before SA was isolated from international competition. They were joined by team-mates Johan

Nicol (66) who was the first SA rider to break the five-minute barrier in the 4 000m pursuit, and former national sprint and road champion Jack Lester (66). “Next year we want to do this again, but we want to have our own category cycling 50km for fun and in aid of Uitenhage SPCA. No racing. Just cycling, stopping for refreshments and then take the road again,” said Nefdt. During the handover of the food and funds, Koos Kroukamp from the Uitenhage SPCA announced that Martin Nefdt would be honoured as one of the Uitenhage SPCA’s ambassadors for his efforts in keeping this non-profitable organisation’s doors open.

Nearest the pins on short holes was won by Ernie Dyer on the 13th hole with Hein “No 1” McLeod on the 17th hole. The only Two Clubs of the day was recorded by Ernie and Hein. The Teddy Bear prize for most golf is becoming so popular that contestants are even claiming this prize before prizegiving. Well done to Lynette van der Westhuizen who walked away with the honours. Godfrey Streso claimed the Whisky Draw.

Muirites swim their way to record highs Muir College Boys’ High School Inter-house Gala swimming records, some of which have remained unchanged since 1987, were bettered during the 2014 gala held at Muir College on the 12 February. Alaric Basson who held the record for both the 200m and 100m breaststroke bettered both his times this year. In the 200m breaststroke he improved his time of 2:28:96 (2013) with a time of 2:25:25. He
also improved on the 100m breaststroke record of 1:11:54 (2013) with a convincing 1:08:31. Alard Basson created a time of 56:78 for the 100m butterfly as there was no existing record. He has set a benchmark time that will be hard to beat in future. He also bettered his own record of 27:37 (2013) in the 50m butterfly with a near 26:71 time and in the 50m freestyle
Alard broke his 2013 record time of 27:87 with a final time of 25.81. The Sutherland relay team consisted of Alard and Alaric Basson, Nizaam Kafaar and Jason Muller. They swam the 4X50m medley relay and set a new record at 2:07:17. The swimmers then proceeded to break a longstanding record of 1:55:46 set in 1987 with a very strong time of 1:50:50 when they swam the 4X50m freestyle race. Muir College Boy’s High School, swam the 2014 River Mile. Alaric came in strongly, taking fourth position. Nizaam, who previously held a position in the top 10, decided to swim with his six year old brother this year and did not compete for a position in the top 10.

The East Cape Off-Road Club (ECOC) kicked of the year with their first round of the Data Scout Challenge over the past weekend. The day brought forth exciting action, with two new junior competitors. In the junior class the father and son team, JP and Etienne Smit, took first place. In the senior class, André Ferreira proved to be the best of the day. Morning tennis at Magennis Park courts One can never be too old to learn to play tennis. This is according to Charles Crause, who will conduct tennis coaching at the Magennis Park courts as from next week. These coaching lessons will be held on Monday or Wednesday mornings from 09:00 to 11:00 at the Drostdy Park Tennis Club which is situated next to the lovely Magennis Park. Coaching will be provided for the first hour after which Round Robin will be played for the second hour. The action starts on Monday, 10 March.
