Créche benefits from racecourse event REPORTER

he annual Christmas in July charity event held at Fairview Racecourse helped raise R40 000 for charity. The beneficiary for this year’s event was Mickey Mouse Crèche, under the auspices of the Uitenhage Child and Family Welfare Society Mark and Dorrie Sham of Sham Racing, contributed largely to the success of the event by rounding up their family, friends and donating R40 000 to this worthy cause. Access Racing also joined in on the spirit of selflessness and provided all meals and snacks for children at no cost. To ensure that the money raised serviced needs of the children, Fairview staff purchased blankets, floor-mats, towels and toiletries for Uitenhage Child and Family Welfare Society. The remaining balance will go towards providing food to the crèche on a monthly basis. Seventy pre-primary children from the Uitenhage Child and Family Welfare Society were the recipients of this goodwill. Uitenhage-born businessman and board member from the Uitenhage Child and Family Welfare Society, Theo Klaas, said “We are overwhelmed and extremely grateful for the hospitality extended to the children and the very generous donation from the racing fraternity.” Launched in 2013, Christmas in July is an annual event where Fairview Racecourse contributes to Mandela month by hosting a charity day to help raise funds for local charities. Chairman of Management Board of the Society, Ann-Marie Terblanche, wishes to thank Theo and the donors for their overwhelming donations and for spoiling our children on a great day.

Willow Dam Carnival to be held in support of CPF HEILIE COMBRINCK The Willow Dam Carnival will once again be hosted by the Uitenhage Community Policing Forum to offer local charities, societies, groups as well as businesses the opportunity to market themselves as well as to socialize with the public. “This is our fifth Carnival at Willow Dam, which in the past has proved to be an ideal outdoor facility to host this event,” said Pat Unsworth, Acting Chairperson of the Uitenhage CPF and co-ordinator of the Willow Dam Carnival.

Could Ebola hit SA? E

bola is currently ravaging western Africa and is reported to be spreading to other countries as it is highly contagious. The current Ebola outbreak has killed nearly 700 people, mostly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. However, a recent traveller who died of the disease in Lagos, Nigeria, has highlighted the ease with which the disease could spread. Lewis Brown, the information minister of Liberia, was quoted as telling Reuters that “(the disease) is a major public health emergency.” He said that Ebola is fierce and deadly and expressed fears that it may continue spreading. It is just a plane flight away Theoretically an outbreak anywhere on the globe is just a plane flight or boat ride away, from countries like South Africa, that receives a regular visitor influx from West Africa. These include illegal immigrants, asylum seekers, business and leisure travellers and contract workers. Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has said that there is no need for South Africans to panic. “Precautions were being taken to prevent the virus from entering the country. Surveillance activities are in place and are extremely effective.” Deadliest outbreak The current outbreak is the deadliest ever on record, and is currently not under control. One of the leading doctors battling the disease in Liberia died on Sunday after contracting the disease earlier in the week. Ebola kills up to 90% of those it infects; this rate is especially high in countries with poor healthcare and a populace unwilling to receive treatment, as is the case in the afore-
