Powerhouses join forces for rally

wo of the powerhouses of South African motorsport have joined forces for the 2013 national motorsport championship season. Volkswagen and Sasol have announced a partnership which will form one of the most formidable collaborations in the national rally championship.

ost of the primary schools in Uitenhage are situated next to busy roads which increases the risk of children being knocked-over by vehicles. Very few of these schools have active school crossing patrols. “For the past few years, concerned parents are complaining regarding the safety of their children who have to cross busy roads to get access to schoolyards as well as the absence of traffic officials at school crossings,” said Pat Unsworth, Acting Chairperson of the Uitenhage Community Policing Forum.

“As a Peace Officer, I am responsible for controlling and protecting the rights of disabled persons regarding parking related issues. “I’ve offered my services, free of charge, to assist at hot spot school crossing areas where there is heavy traffic, but according to the traffic law no individual other than authorised persons may control traffic. “Some schools have indicated that it is too dangerous to expose primary learners to operate school crossing patrols as a result of heavy traffic. This is understandable as these kids are very young.” According to Unsworth the ideal would be to have proper zebra crossings with speed humps on either side and visible signage forcing motorists

to slow down. “This is a serious issue and all concerned are urged to stand together as we need a solution in safeguarding children in crossing these busy streets,” said Unsworth. SAn urgent meeting regarding school crossing safety will be held today at 17:00 at the Church Street Police Station’s JOC Room. It will be attended by school principals, representatives from parent and teachers associations, ward councillors, officials from the Department of Transport and Planning as well as from the Traffic Department, the police and CPF members. All others interested are most welcome to attend.

The South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape is issuing a stern warning to all communities in the province not to become involved in any acts of violence as lawlessness will not be tolerated. This relates to incidents of violence which recently took place in Kwanobuhle, Uitenhage, where several spaza shops were looted by criminals.

“Nine suspects were arrested after nine spaza shops were looted in Kwanobuhle. Police will continue having a strong presence in the affected areas and will act decisively against those transgressing the law,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart. It is clear from preliminary investigations that the incidents are criminal acts from opportunistic criminal

elements in that area. SAPS have deployed sufficient members and resources in and around Kwanobuhle to intensify police visibility and to ensure that a fast and quick response is possible, should it be required.. “It is the SAPS’s mandate to protect and serve all people living in South Africa and we will execute this mandate without prejudice or favour,” said W/O Swart.

Summer swim festival held at banks of Sundays River T

he Eastern Cape’s newest summer festival will be hosted at Sundays River this month in conjunction with one of the regions most historic events, the Spar River Mile. The River Mile festival offers two days of fun and excitement for the whole family along the banks of the Sundays River on the 23rd and 24th February. The festival, supported by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, will include no fewer than 6 sporting events, a host of food vendors, craft stalls and exhibitors as well as an exciting kids zone. Entertainment includes Centrestage comedian Gino Fabbri, African Drumbeat entertainers and Clarendon Primary School band whilst Sasko sponsored Capital Sounds will be the

broadcaster at the Festival. Well known DJ’s from Festival media partner Kingfisher FM will also be on hand to entertain the crowds throughout the weekend. Entry into the festival area is just R20 with one lucky ticket holder, each day, winning two return flights on Mango airlines. Children 12 years and under are free of charge as are participants who have collected their race packs from pre-registration at the Kings Market which will be hosted on Wednesday and Thursday before the festival at the Kings Court Shopping Centre. The feature event on the weekend will be the 89th SPAR River Mile which was founded in Redhouse in 1924 and is expected to attract over 1,000 swimmers. Festival Saturday will host the Family half-mile, a new

deur ’n brand maar nog nooit herstel nie. Volgens Ngoqo is hierdie voertuig voor sy tyd beskadig. Hy noem dat daar tegniese navrae was en dat hulle nog wag vir die eis om afgehandel te word. Tydens die tweede naweek in Januarie vanjaar is dieselfde voertuig (Mahindra) se linker-agterwiel ook afgesteel. ’n Motor wat nie aan die munisipaliteit behoort nie waarvan die wiele ook afgesteel is, staan ook op die munisipale gronde.

More join ‘fight’ against substance abuse Substance abuse is continiously on the increase amongst the youth in our community and this resulted in two renowned organisations, Shepherd’s Field Kibbutz (SFK) rehabilitation centre and FAD (Families Against Drugs), joining forces in the battle against drugs. FAD previously invited the SFK outreach team to attend their weekly Tuesday meeting during which a substance awareness video was shown, various questions were answered and a short presentation about the technical aspects of substance usage were discussed. The outreach team also did a similar drug awareness campaign at NMMU and

Uitenhage High School. “We would like to encourage every person in the community to join us in the fight against drugs,” said Mrs Van Onselen, senior social worker at SFK. “Be aware of the signs of possible substance abuse that can include amongst others any of the following: personality and behaviour changes, mood swings (grumpy then suddenly very happy), unusual sleep patterns, isolation, red and glossy eyes, sniffy or runny nose, less aware of personal hygiene, loss of interest in former activities for example sport, friends and hobbies. “Other signs include items in the

Also a change in language usage.” According to Van Onselen, parents should not turn a blind eye or think that it will never happen to their children. Young poets take the stage in aid of charity

VLV besoek die weerburo Die VLV Uitenhage-tak bied vroue die geleentheid om hulle vaardighede uit te brei en om interessante werksessies of uitstappies by te woon. Die eerste vergadering word eerskomende Woensdag gehou met Jackie Sharp van Greenfingers as die gasspreker. Vroue sal meer vertel word oor landskapverfraaiing, besproeiing en die instandhouding van tuine. Sy is ook naweke werksaam by Willowdam-kwekery. Die vergadering is om 14:00 by die Winterhoek-kerksaal op die hoek van Malansingel en Langenhovenstraat. The Lukhanyiso Home in KwaNobuhle received more than R3 000 of donations which was raised during a poetry recital. The poetry recital organiser, Andisiwe Ketse and Mrs Mgilane of the KwaNobuhle/Khayelitsha AOGM church handed over R3 250 to Nominise Gogo, the director of the organisation that runs the Lukhanyiso Home at Share. Young poets from Uitenhage took

to the stage to assist in raising funds and also pledging to donate school shoes to the kids at the shelter. The event was aimed at creating new beginnings for the children at the shelter and to uplift the community and inspire them to stand together. All donors al thanked for their kind assistance. Ketse said she hopes the event becomes an annual one.

Funds were raised among the police members and the necessary stationery was puchased and this year donated to Winterberg Primary. A tiny 14 year old girl from KwaNobuhle has her 8th Dan karate instructor speechless with her natural sense of the sport and capabilities of mastering the basics within a few months. “I’ve trained many students and lots of body and security guards all my life, but this girl has exceptional skills and the way she performs show that she will one day be an excellent fighter,” said Newman Simakuhle, 8th Dan black belt in Kyokudo Kaikan. “Girls normally are afraid and I thought that she would run away after the first full contact fight, but she is courageous and has a big heart.” Ntombebongo Tsotsa is the only

Late rental short circuits electricity

The Property Poser panel has received a query from a reader who arranged a late payment of her monthly rental with the agent concerned but then found that her prepaid electricity card had been blocked. Unable to purchase electricity, she has approached the experts for advice. According to Stiaan Jonker of Smith Tabata Attorneys in Nelson Mandela Bay, the Rental Housing Act declares it an unfair practice for a landlord to unlawfully shut off the utilities to a rental property. “The regulations provide that a tenant may lodge a complaint with the Rental Housing Tribunal on an urgent basis for spoliation or an interdict.” Jonker says the landlord may not interrupt the supply of services to the tenant’s dwelling without ensuring that all the legal requirements in terms of the Rental Housing Act and the provincial Unfair Practices Regulations have been complied with. “A landlord failing to comply with these regulations may be liable for the payment of a fine or imprisonment if found guilty.”

When a person owns or uses something – in this instance the municipal services – which is then taken away from him/her without due process having been followed, he or she can apply for a spoliation order for its restoration, says Jonker. “The investigation doesn’t take into account whether the previous user or owner had lawful rights to the item or service, simply whether he or she was in peaceful and undisturbed possession thereof before it was taken away from him/her.” Jonker says the merits of the matter would be investigated at a later stage should the parties take the matter further. “In the current situation, an appropriate remedy for our reader to pursue is to approach the tribunal for urgent relief.” If there is a written lease agreement in place, the landlord should first place the tenant on terms for the non-payment of rental, says Susan Chapman from Rawson Properties PE Platinum in the metro. “The agreement will usually provide the period within which the tenant must remedy his or her breach. If the tenant has requested a payment extension for reasonable rea-

sons, as the reader appears to have done, then the landlord must take this into account before considering legal action.” Should the tenant still not perform in accordance with the terms put to him or her, the landlord may then choose to cancel the agreement or evict the tenant, says Chapman. “He could even possibly sue for damages, such as arrear and possibly even future rental.” Even if no written agreement is in place, it does not mean that the landlord can take matters into his own hands, says Chapman. “This simply means that no agreed process is laid down for putting a party on terms should he or she fail to perform his or her duties in terms of the oral agreement.” Chapman says, in such an instance, notice would be required to place the tenant in breach and a reasonable time period allowed within which to perform. “In this instance, too, the Act provides for the landlord to take steps in recovering the loss following an order from the tribunal or a court of law.” )To ask a property related question, visit www.propertyposer.co.za.

Tennisster wen drie toernooie in VSA ’n Jong tennisster van Hoërskool Brandwag, Jandré Lessing het onlangs aan vyf Casely-tennistoernooie in die Verenigde State van Amerika deelgeneem waarvan hy drie gewen het. Jandré het vir meer as ’n maand in Miami, Florida tuisgegaan terwyl hy aan drie o.14-toernooie, een o.16-toernooi en een o.18-toernooi deelgeneem het. Hy het al drie die o.14-toernooie gewen. Jan-

dré het tot die finaal van die o.18-toernooi deurgedring en tot die semifinaal van die o.16toernooi. Die toernooie is elk beslis in drie vol stelle en Jandré moes soms tot twee wedstryde per dag speel. Tennisspelers van oral oor die wêreld het aan die Casely-toernooie deelgeneem. Jandré is vanjaar in graad 9.

Rally challenge offers big prize money

The Algoa Rally Association has received a boost from local businesses which have donated prizes for the winners of the 2013 motor vehicle rally championship which will consist of six rallies. There will be a variety of special stages to create a challenge with overall winners receiving prizes worth R50 000 sponsored by local business. “This is the biggest prize on offer for any club motorsport event in South Africa and which is expected to gain the attention of out of town competitors,” said Neville Bartle from Algoa Rally Association. “This challenge is open to all competitors and not only limited to rally club members. It offers local motor sport enthusiasts the opportunity to see more specialised rally vehicles consisting of 1400, 1600 and 2000cc vehicles all competing for the lucrative prize.” The rules are simple and any competitor stands a chance to win, even with a home built vehicle which meets the requirements of safety and motor sport regulations for drivers and navigators. The winners of each class score points and the team with the most points at the end of the season will win the prize. The first event starts on 23 February at Hunters Retreat Hotel from 09:00 with scrutineering and documentation. For more information on the rally visit www.algorallyclub.co.za
