Polisie waarsku oor kapings

ie polisie in Motherwell het motoriste gewaarsku teen ’n sindikaat wat moontlik vir motorkapings op die R334 van Uitenhage verantwoordelik is. “Die R334, veral dié deel tussen Motherwell en Uitenhage, loop onder kapings deur,” het kapt. André Beetge, polisiewoordvoerder, gesê. “Die kapers het glo veral Volkswagen Polo’s en enige soort bakkie in hul visier. ’n Kaping-taakspan is saamgestel om die gevalle te ondersoek.”

ANDRÉ BEETGE POLISIEWOORDVOERDER ’n Paar verdagtes is volgens Beetge reeds in verband met dié sake in hegtenis geneem. Kapings is egter nie die enigste probleem langs dié pad nie, het Beetge gesê. “Enigeen wat langs die pad stilhou, is in gevaar,” het hy gesê. “Daar was voorheen gevalle van motoriste wat vermoedelik prostitute oplaai en dan in die bosse deur misdadigers oorval en beroof word.” Die polisie het pamflette opgestel en gaan kennisgewingborde aanbring om dié pad as ’n hoëmisdaadroete aan te dui. “Motoriste moet bedag wees en hul deure gesluit hou – veral wanneer hulle by kruisings stilhou, ongeag waarvoor hulle stilhou. “As ’n motoris langs dié pad stilhou, plaas hy homself in gevaar.” – Odette Kemp ;Kaptein André Beetge wys ’n pamflet met veiligheidswenke wat die polisie opgestel het oor gevare op die pad. The 5th Uitenhage Market was held last Sunday and a total of 165 stands were booked offering a wide diversity of products. “There was an awesome feast in the food court with tables sponsored by Coca-Cola and Brandwag High School. Most of the items at the food court were sold out before the end of the day,” said Lilly de Jong from Women In Business, the organisers of the Uitenhage Market. The market was enjoyed by the masses sitting under shady trees and listening to music from Gerry Claasen and Hansie die Bosveld Kwagga who were perform-

ing live. The crowds were also entertained by High Noon Dog School, Tina’s Line Dancing and Just Dance dance studio. “We would like to thank all the stand holders and sponsors for their support,” said De Jong. The eighth Sunridge Village Family 10km road race and 5km fun walk will be held on Saturday, with the starting and finishing points at the shopping centre, next to Kragga Kamma Road. This will make it one of the biggest 10km events in the Metro,” said Shane Brown, chairman of the Sunridge Village Family Run/Walk organising committee. Sports results at U’hage High 50th year celebrations Rugby and other codes of sport were played at Rosedale Sports Fields as part of Uitenhage High School’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Eight schools were invited to participate in the tournament. The Uitenhage group consisted of Uitenhage High, McCarthy, John Walton and Gamble Street Secondary School. The Port Elizabeth and surrounding schools invited to participate include Bertram (PE), Mary Waters (Grahamstown), Humansdorp and Spandau (Graaff-Reinet). In the Uitenhage group the hosts beat Gamble Street 29-0 and followed this up with a 12-7 win over John Walton. McCarthy beat John Walton 8-5 and also Gamble Street 20-5. Uitenhage High and McCarthy proceeded to the semi-finals and the McCarthy were the winners. In the other group, Spandau was the winning team and played against McCarthy in the final. It was a onesided game with Spandau thrashing McCarthy 24-0. In the junior divisions, Spandau also came out on top. Uitenhage High lost their girls’ match against Humansdorp. In netball the girls from Spandau Secondary School triumphed and walked away with the trophy.

heldon van der Linde became the youngest driver ever, at age 14, in SA motorsport to win a national saloon car event during round three of the Engen Volkswagen Cup championship at Aldo Scribante Raceway on Saturday.
