healthy worker is a happy worker, and with this at heart the Sundays River Citrus Company (SRCC) scooped various prizes at the sixth Nelson Mandela Bay Health and Wellness awards which took place at Sapphire Place in Cannonville. The event is the only one of its kind in South Africa, and is held in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber. It assists in placing business in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro at the forefront of wellness in South Africa. This year a record number of entries were received. “The Sundays River Farming Trust and Luthando Farm are two BEE citrus farms which produce citrus fruit and export through SRCC. “These workers are trained and developed to be able to farm on their own in the future,” said Zelda van Tonder, Accreditation and Training Coordinator at SRCC and responsible for Farm Worker Wellness Programme. A wellness programme was established during 2013 with the aim to educate farm workers regarding health related topics and to be able to make important life changing decisions. “Peer educators conduct awareness sessions on the farms and an educational theatre play on health topics is being performed by the Sibanye Theatre Group. The reason these plays are so successful is that it transcends all levels of education and

Girl wins at accounting olympiad

itenhage learner Sumaiya Moses from Uitenhage High School came out tops in the recent SAIPA|ABASA National Accounting Olympiad. Moses is the top female performer in the category for government schools. Run by the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA), in conjunction with the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants of SA (ABASA), the Olympiad is an annual competition that aims to raise greater awareness of becoming a professional accountant as a career choice. Moses achieved a score of 92.44%, putting her slightly behind fellow government school top performer, Tshepo Phuti Moloto from Pax College in Mashashane, Limpopo, who achieved 92.88%. The top private school performers were Ismaeel Kaka from Pretoria’s Azaadville Muslim School and Dineo Mojapelo from Liberty Community College in Bramley, who scored 88% and 88.88% respectively. “Winning has made me believe that through hard work and dedication, you can achieve anything,” said Moses, who also cred-

its her teacher, Phillip Joseph, for much of her success. “Mr Joseph is one of the most dedicated teachers I have ever known, always going the extra mile and ensuring that we attend all available accounting programmes,” she said. “If it was not for his constant support and encouragement, I would not have achieved this honour.” Explaining why he encouraged his students to enter the Olympiad, Joseph says “I realised that our learners need to be assessed much more. Twelve of the 15 learners decided to enter and most of them paid their own monies.” Regarding the secret to their success, he says “Whenever there is an opportunity, we do a lot of informal activities and we also ensure that they attend additional classes at the Nelson Mandela University.” “In addition to the outstanding results of this year’s top performers, we as SAIPA and ABASA are delighted with the overall performance of the many thousands of learners who took part in this year’s competition,” said Navin Lalsab, Accreditation, Compliance and Development Executive for SAIPA. As part of the Olympiad, all entrants are given study guides that help the learners in their schoolwork and preparation for final examinations. “Learners who perform well in Accounting are more likely to pursue it as a career option, so part of our aim is to ensure that they are as well prepared as they can possibly be for their exams,” said Lalsab.

So, toe was die insamel van plastiekknippies nie meer nodig nie!” Ongelukkig, weens omstandighede kon Nathania nie self die rolstoel in ontvangs neem nie. Die oorhandiging is by Addo Nasionale Olifantpark se restaurant gedoen aan ’n medewerker wat dit veilig op Jansenville aan Nathania oorhandig het. “Ons motorfietsryers is mos nou maar eenmaal lief vir ry. Ons het besluit om die oorhandiging op ’n mooi plek te hou en wat is nou mooier as die natuur?” “Ek het verstaan dis die eerste keer in haar lewe dat sy wiele gekry het,” sê Nell. Prizes galore at 23rd Toy Run REPORTER This year sees the 23rd annual Port Elizabeth Toy Run®, a charity event that raises much needed funds for organisations supporting children, taking place on Sunday 30 November.

Public thanked for walking dogs There was a nice turnout of walkers supporting the Uitenhage SPCA’ Doggy Walk last weekend. “Most, if not all our dogs, received some quality time spent with them,” said Elinda Tonnesan, from the Uitenhage SPCA. This Sunday an Adoption Day will be held at the kennels from 10:00 to 12:00 with the aim to facilitate adoptions. There will also be a Jumble Sale where all kinds of items will be on sale.

“As always we encourage families to adopt and not shop. We have so many beautiful animals and they all are looking for a family of their own. Please encourage those looking to add a furry to their family to come down and visit us on Sunday,” said Tonnesan. Van die klub se prestasies oor die tydperk is onder andere dat dit 78 OP netbalspelers opgelewer het met Paulina Westraad as die eerste speler in 1966. Die klub het tot op datum 17 erelede (lede wat langer as 15 jaar lid van die klub is) met drie lewenslange lede naamlik Beatrix Smith (lid vir afgelope 39 jaar), Elsabé Pattinson (lid vir die afgelope 29 jaar) en Ronelle Blom (lid vir die afgelope 27 jaar). Vanjaar spog die klub ook met nege skeidsregters, waarvan twee oor SAskeidsregtergradering beskik. Hulle is Elsabé Pattinson en Erica Niemand. Die bekende Theresa Prince, een van Suid-Afrika se min internasionale netbalskeidsregters het haar skeidsregting by Despatch Netbalklub begin en was vir 13 jaar ’n lid van die klub (1990-2003). Build It U/13 soccer festival kicksoff The Build It Kwanobuhle annual U/13 Soccer League and Festival 2014 with the assistance of the Nobuhle Despatch Football Association (NODEFA) will be held at Jabavu Stadium this coming weekend. The top 8 teams from the local NODEFA U/13 League will face off in a knockout format tournament to conclude their season. The festival commences tomorrow at the Build It

13:00. The winning teams progress to the semi-finals after lunch with the final kick-off at 15:30. There will be an attendance draw on the day with a Kaizer Chiefs front door signed by former Kaizer Chiefs Captain Jimmy Tau up for grabs. The official prize giving will commence immediately thereafter at 16:20 with presentations by Build It, NODEFA Presidency and

Big Walk for Cancer through hotel foyer The Algoa FM Boardwalk Big Walk for Cancer in Port Elizabeth added a new and exciting addition to the walk - as the route will take participants through The Boardwalk Hotel foyer. The aim is to get 12 000 people walking in aid of Igazi Foundation, raising the necessary funds to assist children suffering from cancer. Increase in childhood cancer “Research has shown that that there will be a big increase in the incidence of childhood cancer diagnoses over the next three to five years,” says Dr Johani Vermeulen, head of oncology at Dora Nginza Hospital. According to Vermeulen the current oncology ward at Dora Nginza does not have the capacity to accommodate all the expected patients. Therefore funds raised will go towards moving the Dora Nginza oncology wards to Provincial Hospital, which is home to the Igazi Foundation’s haematology ward. “With 80% of childhood cancers being blood-related, it makes perfect sense to move the oncology unit to Provincial Hospital which is already equipped with a haematology ward on the 7th floor,” says Dr Neil Littleton, Founding Member of the Igazi Foundation. 5km Start, finish & entries The 5km walk start (08:00) and finish at The Boardwalk on Saturday, October 25.
