Food outlets hit back after ‘misleading’ reports HEILIE COMBRINCK
“
Come and see for yourself what the conditions are at our restaurant. You are most welcome, we have an open door policy and our food is good.”
So said Terance de Jager, owner of Guido’s Restaurant in Uitenhage. His statement follows recent newspaper reports resulting in social media gossiping and an array of e-mails being sent regarding municipal hygiene reports done during 2012 at more than 350 food outlets in the Nelson Mandela Bay. “Inspections and hygiene reports are done on a regular basis by both environmental health practitioners from the municipality and our franchise group. This is normal procedure at our kind of business as these reports assist us in complying with hygiene and other standards. “We were listed among ‘shocking hygiene violations’ for a report to attend to leaky taps, soap and hand towels at handbasins and to update pest control reports as we had recently moved to our new premises – these matters were attended to promptly after that inspection. “A health department certificate of compliance was issued shortly after the sensation seeking article comfirming that we were unfairly labelled by irresponsible reporting. Even though the invitation to the editor to visit was declined and the apology in the following edition went unnoticed unfortunately much damage has been done.” According to De Jager, Guido’s Uitenhage and Despatch take-aways will continue to strive to provide the community with an excellent standard in food and hygiene that makes them proud of being local.
Another food outlet which received misleading bad publicity is Geyer’s Butchery at Despatch. “It was totally inappropriate and unreasonable to publish the reports as in our case it was two minor offences which were rectified almost immediately,” said Fanie Terblanche. The report stated that the sales assistant did not wear her “mobcap” and jackets of two blockmen were lying in a bag on a cupboard in the backroom of the butchery. “The public’s e-mails and comments on Facebook that followed the newspaper report were extremely disturbing and far from the truth. Visit our butchery and see for yourself; we adhere to all criteria of the health law.”

Unreasonable reports made the public sceptic, but they should come and see for themselves Guido’s adheres to the health law criteria, said manager Riaan de Jager (left) and Guido’s owner Terance de Jager. PHOTO:HEILIE COMBRINCK
