Rally ‘takes off’ at AutoPavilion REPORTER <The entire Volkswagen Rally has been optimised to make spectating as easy as it can be.

he annual Volkswagen Rally will roar into action from Auto Pavilion in Uitenhage tomorrow at 12:00 and finish at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon.

A ‘shake-down’ gravel special stage in the Jagtvlakte area near the VW factory will take place today between 08:00 and 11:00 and the usual single-pass recce run of the full route will take place between 11:00 and 17:00. For spectators at the 2014 Volkswagen Rally, winning comes easily as the event is organised to make it as spectator-friendly as possible with 15 stages of competition. The route, laid out by the Algoa Rally Club, features a mix of tar, gravel and forest stages with fast sweeps and very technical sections. “The entire rally has been optimised to make spectating as easy as it can be,” says Joe Fourie, route director for the Volkswagen Rally. “From stage one near Mission Road, through the Longmore Forest and on to Jeffrey’s Bay tomorrow evening, the stages produce plenty of challenges for the competitors and lots of good opportunity for the spectators to keep up with the action.” The Volkswagen Rally spectator guide is available on the Volkswagen Motorsport (Volkswagen Motorsport_za) Facebook page, or follow the Twitter account @VWMotorsport_za and the website http://www.algoarallyclub.co.za/ for rally information.

Mountain bike gets power to curb crime HEILIE COMBRINCK

Success was especially achieved in Vanes where crime was particularly rife earlier this year. According to Pat Unsworth, chairperson of Uitenhage’s Community Policing, crime was down by half since residents became involved in sector policing. “We are grateful for the support , particularly for the donation of a super bike. Transport is a problem and the bike will be an asset in patrolling, Unsworth said. Simon Clark, a Muir old boy and owner of

SuperCycles in Port Elizabeth, donated the bike. A second bike will be delivered in August.

“A person should become involved with initiatives benefitting the community. It is the right thing to do and makes a difference,” Clark said. “These petrol-driven bikes are faster than a car in traffic. They are effective and economically viable to maintain and will add speed to policing.” By fitting a 48cc two-cycle petrol engine, Clark adds spark to a standard mountain bike. Although its average speed is 35 km/h,

Eers het ‘n hele spul jaagduiwels wat dink Innesstraat is ‘n resiesbaan hier deur my tuinmuur gebars. Nou is hierdie gat hier. “Ek vrees elke dag dat iemand in die gat gaan ry. Sowaar daar gebeur dit en sommer twee ongelukke in een week by die gat,” sê Katie Adams, ‘n jarelange inwoner van Innesstraat op Uitenhage. Sy sê die gat is sowat ses weke gelede gegrawe nadat water by die padoppervlak begin uitborrel het. Sedertdien is daar twee geel plastiekbuffers weerskante van die reuse gat geplaas om motoriste te waarsku. “Die buffers word deur die wind omgewaai en as dit plat lê sien motoriste dit eers op ‘n

kort afstand. Hier is ook geen waarskuwings wat in die nag reflekteer nie, so as jy sien is jy by die gat. “Ek dink dit is baie nalatig van die munisipaliteit. Daar is min spasie vir die verkeer om langs die gat verby te ry en die situasie is lewensgevaarlik,” het Adams gesê. DA-raadslid Pieter Terblanche van Wyk 51, sê ‘n waterpyp het gebars en met die regmaak daarvan is ’n stormwaterpyp beskadig. “Beamptes moet nou die stormwaterpyp herstel maar hulle beweer dat daar nie materiaal is om die herstelwerk te doen nie. “Tipies wat aangaan hier op Uitenhage. Vir meeste van die sloerwerk met herstel van waterlekke is die rede dat daar nie materiaal beskikbaar is nie,” het Terblanche gesê. Hy het ’n ernstige beroep aan die munisipaliteit gerig dat die Innesstraat herstelwerk so spoedig moontlik afgehandel moet word om verdere ongelukke te vermy. Daar is aan Terblanche meegedeel dat kontrakteurs hierdie week die stormwaterpyp gaan herstel en die gat gaan toegooi.

Train gets ready to race against runners E

xcitement is building in the Metro for the much anticipated return of the Train Race concept as the inaugural Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race gets set to leave the Port Elizabeth station at 09:00 on July 27. The concept, re-introduced by Zports after an absence of 10 years, will see running teams of 7 members taking on a Metro Rail train between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, a distance of approximately 40km.

Various categories of entry have been made available to include corporate, social, club and school teams as they challenge each other for trophies and bragging rights in this signature Metro event. Limited to just 300 teams, the Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race is expected to sell out, given that over a half of the allotted entries have already been snapped up by local companies.

Zports have also made spectator tickets available on the train with less than a third of the 500 tickets remaining. Entry fees started at R350 per team with spectator train tickets only R50 for a return ticket. The Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race also offers companies the opportunity to order custom-branded t-shirts with their entry as well as hospitality packages for the finish festival area.

NMBT chief executive officer Mandlakazi Skefile said they welcomed the idea of the event as it would continue to promote the region’s status as a popular sporting destination. The Great Train Race was one of the largest road running events in the province when relay teams raced the Apple Express train between Port Elizabeth and Loerie in 2004. This year a new, sustainable format has been conceived which will become the first major sporting event to incorporate all three towns which make up Nelson Mandela Bay - Port Elizabeth, Despatch and Uitenhage - as relay teams cover the 40km distance between Port Elizabeth station and the Uitenhage Station and will race against a Metro Rail train. Each year the race direction will alternate to create an up and a down run. The first teams are expected to reach Uitenhage Station around 11:00 and the last teams should be in just before the 13:00 prize giving on the Powerade Stage. A festival of activities will welcome teams at Uitenhage Station including the Castle Lite Beer Garden managed by the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise for charity with lots of food vendors in support. Partnership and branding opportunities have been made available for companies at each of the change-over stations, water points or on train coaches. Financial Statement by Sinethemba Trust There has been concerns raised about transparency and accountability about funds managed by Sinethemba Trust. Hence this statement is published in the interest of transparency and accountability. Among other things, Sinethemba Trust Trustees resolved that: 1.All monies received as Capital be distributed equally among the 173 beneficiaries; 2.Only interest earned on Capital can be used for Educational Bursaries; 3.Rands One Million One Hundred and Eighty Thousand (plus further interest), being the balance in the Good Year Trust account, be allocated to the Educational Bursary Trust to be established for future bursaries; 4.After defraying all management, legal, accounting and auditing expenses, Sinethemba Trust be closed and all funds remaining (if any) be re-distributed among the 173 beneficiaries in equal portions. In line with the above Resolutions, the Trustees present the reconciliation and allocation of funds as per the attached schedule. It must be noted that Sinethemba Trust only received two payments of R 2 295 642.00 (in 2004) and R 3 000 000.00 (in 2014) which equals R 5 295 642.00. As can be seen from the attached intended allocation, the Trust intends to comply with its mandate and will be distributing R 5 363 000.00 to the Trustees in equal portions. In addition, the Trust has already distributed R 613 016.50 in bursaries since 2004. This amount was from interest earned on the initial monies received in 2004. The Trust also places on record that an additional R 1.18m is being held in legal trust and will be allocated to the Education Trust for future bursaries. This brings the total intended distribution and allocation to R 7 426 016.50. These figures far exceed the initial R4m - which was the initial agreement between Good Year and NUMSA. These figures and the intended allocation are published in the interest of transparency and accountability. Any person who has concerns and / or who disputes the figures and the intended allocation are free to contact either the Trustees or Lucy Dendile at Uitenhage NUMSA Offices. VWSA retirees social gathering All pensioners and retirees who formerly were employed at Volkswagen of South Africa are invited to a social meeting which will be held on Monday, 14th July at 09:30. The pensioners and retirees meeting will be held at VWSA’s PeoplePavilion, a R30 million complex for sports, recreational, rehabilitation and community facility for the benefit of VWSA employees and their families. The venue

is at Peter Searle Drive at the back of the VWSA manufacturing plant in Uitenhage. The first meeting with the aim to establish a pensioners and retirees monthly social gathering was held during June. SURFING FEVER HITS JEFFREYS BAY =With the eyes of the surfing world firmly fixed on Jeffreys Bay as the top surfers in the world are drifting into town to take part in Round 6 of the World Championship Tour (WCT) the JBay Open of Surfing from July 10 to 20 local surfer Dylan Lightfoot (19) is preparing to take on the biggest names in surfing in his back garden. Lightfoot is set to surf against the likes of Gabriel Medina the world’s number one ranked surfer and possibly even Kelly Slater. Universallyregarded as one of the best righthand point breaks on the planet, Jeffreys Bay rejoins the WCT in 2014 after a twoyear hiatus from elite competition. Car boot sale at Falcon Rock A new event in the form of a car boot sale will be held at Falcon Rock next to Lady Slipper during the weekend of 16 and 17 August. There will be antiques, collectables, second hand items as well as new items. The car boot sale will be held every third weekend of the month from 10:00 to 15:00. competition sponsored by The Reclamation Group. A closely contested affair it was with 1st place (on count-out) going to “No.1” Hein McLeod on 18 points followed by Renzo Vaghi in 2nd place. Renzo seems to be striking best form again. The Morris Olivier sponsored prize for nearest the pins on short holes went to Hutt Little on the 4th and Piet “oorlog” Fouche on the 7th hole. The only 2 club of the day was also scored by Piet Fouche. The whiskey draw went to Robin Lofty-Eaton and the prized Teddy Bear for most golf going to Johan Froehlich.
