‘Kyalami street’ accident at playschool HEILIE COMBRINCK

rrespective of numerous serious collisions or a petition already submitted in 2008 by residents from Innes Street requesting traffic calming measures, not a single effort has been made by authorities to prevent speeding in this street dubbed “Kyalami” by residents.

Last week on Wednesday morning, another near fatal accident happened in Innes Street at the entrance to a playschool. It involved two vehicles, both transporting school children.

“Apparently a driver on his way to Riebeek College overtook a vehicle which was turning right to drop off toddlers at the playschool,” said Gouwa Lukie, owner of Stay & Play playschool and resident of Innes Street.

“I always fear an accident here. Vehicles come hurtling pass as drivers are in a hurry to drop off children at the various surrounding schools.

We are situated between a blind spot from one side and a bend on the other, so you need to be quick either to turn into the yard or to get access to the street.”

According to Lukie, authorities urgently need to look into the matter of some kinds of traffic calming measures.

Another resident, Ian Mc Neil-Spence, said by now they are geared-up for accidents as it has become a common thing in Innes Street.

“As I heard the tyres screaming, then the loud bang of metal clashing and afterwards the yelling of children, I immediately phoned 10111 and urged them to get the emergency services as there were children involved in the accident,”said Mc Neil-Spence.

“The emergency services were here very quickly on the scene. The impact of the crash flung a school girl from the vehicle which was trying to overtake the other vehicle. She as well as the driver was hurt. All involved were taken to hospital.”

Mc Neil-Spence has a detailed file and photos as well as recorded phone calls made regarding accidents in Innes Street and letters requesting authorities to attend to the matter.

“One of the excuses from authorities why Innes Street can not get traffic calming measures, is that it is used by ambulances.

“We have been living here for the past 20 years, and really, we have seen a minimal

number ofambulances speeding to the hospital. They mainly use Mosel Road,” said Mc Neil-Spence.

Resident Katie Adams, who has been an Innes Street accident survivor herself, said she had seen 12 accidents in front of her property alone during the past 19 years living in the street.

She was involved in a crash when a speed-

ing car tried to overtake her whilst she was turning into her driveway.

Councillor Pieter Terblanche previously said that “according to the Metro’s Integrated Development Programme no funds are available for speed calming measures in Uitenhage.

However after public participation and requests from Innes Street residents the matter was submitted as being for priority funding.

ominations for 2015 Top 40 Under 40 are open, and nominations end on September 25.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s Top 40 Under 40 proves that Nelson Mandela Bay has a pool of business talent to rival any other city in the country.

Now in its fourth year, the Top 40 Under 40 inspires pride in Nelson Mandela Bay and its young business achievers, building hope for the future of business in the region.

The final list - decided upon by a high calibre panel of judges - is published in a magazine each February, and distributed to Business Chamber members, its partners and stakeholders and the general public, and made available online for download throughout the year.

he architecture of a “signature” visitor centre at the entrance to the Hopewell Conservation Estate near Uitenhage, has been recognised by the South African Institute of Architects, which conferred the 2013/2014 Corobrik SAIA Award of Merit for the building.

It is the second major award for the building, which received the Regional Award for Architecture from the Eastern Cape Institute of Architects in 2013.

Designed by multi award-winning architect Richard Stretton of Koop Design, the visitor centre provides a reference for the style of residential homes, lodges and hospitality suites being built on the three thousand hectare conservation estate.

It was built by Port Elizabeth-based Wouter van der Westhuizen of Chris Hawes Construction.

In its citation for the 2013 award, the ECIA states: “The well-conceived and beautifully detailed structure has echoes of the Barcelona Pavilion, but reflecting in its making and choice of materials the ecological concerns of the twenty-first century.

“The building is finely detailed and crafted and well-made. The project provides a benchmark for both the design and construction of

End of era for Addo rose show HEILIE COMBRINCK Addo is synonymous with elephants, citrus and then its beautiful roses which flourish in most gardens of the Sundays River Valley. Thousands of roses were also the main attraction to Addo each October, for the past 30 years, but sadly the end of an era has been announced.

The Addo Rose Show was established as the main fundraiser for the Sundays River Women’s Institute, which was founded 93 years ago, in supporting various local charities as well as to keep the historic Valentine Hall maintained.

According to a press release published on the Addo Rose Show official website, “...Times have changed and the Eastern Cape now has a number of festivals, the economy has taken a serious knock, petrol is very expensive and fewer people are coming to our show.

“The Women’s Institute flower arrangers are mostly elderly and there are fewer helpers who are finding

it more and more difficult to cope with transforming the hall, the specimen tent, and the tea tent.

“Most of the roses are ordered and flown in from Johannesburg at considerable cost. Sponsors are difficult to find and as costs are spiralling, the Sundays River Women’s Institute decided, regretfully, that the time has come to call it a day, and give up having our Rose and Garden Show.”

The Women’s Institute will, however, still celebrate the beauty of the rose and its many successful shows they have had as well as paying tribute to all women who through the years “ have put their hearts and souls into organising the rose festival”.

It is planned to host this high tea each October by filling the Valentine hall with roses from local gardens in the Valley. In agreement with the Sunday’s River Women’s Institute, Magnetic Storm has undertaken to relocate the show to Nelson Mandela Bay. The Sunday’s River Women’s Institute will then become a beneficiary of the event, to continue with its projects in the community of Addo.

The canals in lower Market Street and at the back of Middle Street, Kabah, were equipped with removable waste bins which were placed in the storm water canals to prevent waste objects from flowing into the Swartkops River.

According to Councillor Ann-Marie Terblanche; “Most of our problem areas in and around Uitenhage, where waste is illegally dumped, are caused by irresponsible citizens as well as unregistered waste removers.

“It is easy to blame the municipality. Yes, we all know the situation of poor service delivery, but citizens and local businesses should not worsen conditions by making

them guilty of this kind of don’t care behaviour.”

Councillor Terblanche said the bins have most probably not been replaced or cleaned as a result of contactors not being paid for service rendered to the municipality.

According to Jeff Bratby, an executive member from Zwartkops Conservancy; “A matter of concern is that in some of the Uitenhage areas the refuse collection operates on a two weekly basis.

Thus citizens make themselves guilty of illegal dumping.”

“We need more awareness programmes to educate the community regarding the importance of refraining from polluting their area and especially the canals and Swartkops River,” said Bratby.

Gershwin Forbes, currently a learner at Muir College Boys High School started playing squash at the early age of seven. In the last year he has participated in the Bloemfontein Open and The South African School Closed.

He recently represented the Eastern Province by playing as part of the team in the U/16 age category at the Inter-Provincial Tournament. They secured third place and brought home the Bronze.

Gershwin is currently ranked in the number 5 position in South Africa and received his colours, bringing home a Gold.

It is obvious that his hard work and dedication is paying off. Gershwin credits his great success to the input of his coach, Mike Scott from The Indoor Sports Centre “Swifts” in Uitenhage.

Gerswhin also plays for the Muir College Squash First Team as well as the Old Grey Squash Club. His equipment is sponsored by Dunlop.

Uitenhage Klawerjas Union: Jetta Kings Klawerjas Club gave VWKC B-team a severe punishment to score a massive 90-50. Andrew Domingo & Lennie Horne were merciless to put on 40-16 against Tommy Muller & Essop Leabath.

Maurice Pillay & Knaap Daniël Lentoor added salt to the wounds when they scores 34-18 against Elrado Jansen & Ryaan van Heerden.

Polo Cats KC did the same trick with VWKC A-team scoring 122-70. Ralph Jack & Dean Bacon ran out easily 42-22 against Roderick Thomas & David van der Westhuizen. Jetta Kings KC also steam-rolled over VWKC A-team scoring 120-88.

Hemmo Moodie & Thomas Jack clinched victory over David Rhodes & Dean Borchjes with 38-14. Kirkwood se o.15 rugby onoorwonne Die jaarlikse interskole tussen Hoërskool Kirkwood en Hoërskool Middelburg het onlangs op die skool se sportvelde in Kirkwood plaasgevind.

Vanjaar is inwoners sowel as sakemense van Kirkwood versoek om hulle huise en besighede in groen en oranje, die kleure van die skool, op te maak ter ondersteuning van die dorp se sportspanne.

Na hierdie jaarlikse kragmeting was dit Middelburg wat die beker huistoe geneem het.

Hoërskool Kirkwood se boodskap aan die “Middies” was duidelik: “Ons kom die beker volgende jaar met mening by julle haal!”

Kirkwood was veral trots op hulle o.15 rugbyspan wat Middelburg met 32 - 3 geklop het.

Dit was ‘n besonderse oorwinning en na 10 liga wedstryde is hulle nog steeds onoorwonne.

Daar is ‘n total van 282 punte vir die span aangeteken en slegs 44 punte teen hulle.

Beetle drive held to subsidise development swimmers =The Uitenhage Swimming Club held a Beetle Drive with the aim to raise funds to subsidise swimmers and equip them with the necessary outfits. The drive was supported by members from the local service clubs (Round Table, Lions and Rotary). In return the Swimming Club has collected clothing and blankets which they have donated to the Round Tablers in support of their Winter Knights project. Amalgamated cricket club enjoys local support HEILIE COMBRINCK

T

he amalgamated new cricket club in Uitenhage, Eleven Stars Collegiate Cricket Club, will officially play its home games at Winterberg Primary School’s sports grounds.

Construction of a new cricket turf pitch and side screen is in the process and the first official practice sessions commence today at 17:00.

“We are looking forward to the new season as there is refreshing new talent in these amalgamated clubs,” said Lunga Davids, chairman of Eleven Stars Collegiate Cricket Club.

Interested cricket players are most welcome to attend the forthcoming practise sessions which will be held at Winterberg sports grounds.

According to Riaan Kilian, a member of Eleven Stars Collegiate Cricket Club, “We are grateful for Winterberg Primary’s support

and for granting us the opportunity not only to use its facilities, but also to plough back and assist in bettering the cricket pitch and sports field to be of use for the school during weekdays.”

Davids said the Club has received confirmation from EP Cricket that they will participate in the 3rd and 4th Leagues.

Kilian said, “The club will appreciate local business to get on board by means of sponsorships or donations, as there is exciting young talent that we wish to develop and in the process also develop this club as one to be reckoned with in the future.”
