his coming weekend more than thirty artists will participate in the inaugural Uitenhage Local is Lekker Festival at the Central Sports Field. High on the list of popular musicians in attendance will be the Baardskeerdersbos

Orkes all the way from Gansbaai in the Western Cape. Another name worth mentioning who will entertain the crowd is DJ Isabel. Both the Baardskeerders as well as DJ Isabel will take the stage on Saturday. Activities start tomorrow from noon until midnight and will continue on Saturday from 09:00 onwards and on Sunday from 09:00 until 15:00. The entrance fee is R30 for adults, R10

for children and under 10s may enter free of charge. In addition there will be more than 200 stalls, a beer tent and lots of entertainment for the children. According to event organiser, Lilly de Jong from Women In Business, “this is the perfect way to start the holiday and to do some affordable Christmas shopping.”

‘Big Bleed’ hits town tomorrow REPORTER

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) in conjunction with The Uitenhage Lions Club and Klinicare will be having a Christmas Big Bleed tomorrow at the Klinicare Pharmacy Uitenhage. This initiative was strategically selected as an attempt to increase blood collections in preparation for the anticipated festive season blood shortage. The day will be associated with a carnival atmosphere with various fun

activities managed by Lions Club members, Klinicare as well as SANBS staff members. Activities will include a jumping castle and various sponsored give-aways from among others, Body Fuel Express Uitenhage and Afrisave. The target is to collect 150 to 200 pints of blood from 11:00 to 19:00 in front of the Klinicare Pharmacy in Caledon Street. The public are urged please to support this event. To become a blood donor, you must be between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh 50kg or more and lead a safe healthy lifestyle.

Kirkwood Wildsfees ‘hunting’ for extra ordinary foodstalls The Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees is hunting for stallholders who can cook up “something special” for the 2015 festival, which will run from Friday, 26 to Saturday, June 28, 2015. “We are keeping just three spaces for those who can dish up something out of the ordinary – Greek, Turkish and Italian food with a wild twist come to mind,” says festival director Jenni Honsbein. Sy daag mense uit om met ’n glimlag ’n hap uit ’n suurlemoen te vat sonder dat jou gesig wys hoe suur jou kiewe trek. Die idee agter dié suurlemoen-etery is dat mense wat organe nodig het, dikwels van buite doodgewoon voorkom, maar van binne die “suur en pyn” van siekte beleef terwyl hulle op skenkings wag. Vir Stephanie Nel, ’n onderwyser by Brandwag, lê orgaanskenking na aan die hart. “Ons familie het ’n genetiese siekte genaamd polisistiese niere, wat beteken indien jy nie ’n nieroorplanting so gou as moontlik ondergaan nadat die simptome kop uitsteek nie, jy op dialise moet gaan totdat jy ’n nier van ’n skenker kan ontvang,” vertel Nel. Nel se tannie is reeds ’n jaar gelede oorlede na sy té lank vir ’n nier moes wag. Tans wag haar oom ook reeds vyf jaar en kry daagliks

Nel se graad 9/6-klas was die eerstes om die uitdaging aan te durf. Sedertdien het Brandwag ook vir Nico Malan, waar Nel op skool was, uitgedaag. Humansdorp het nie op hul laat wag nie en intussen beplan die Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool (Affies) om in Januarie ’n klomp suurlemoene te verorber. Musical picnic to held at Willow Dam A picnic featuring national artists sharing the stage with various local upcoming and established artists will be held at Willow Dam in Uitenhage on Tuesday, December 23rd from 10:00 to 22:00. According to Nceba Mqolomba, an organiser of the event, music from various genres like kwaito, hip hop, Afrosoul and reggae will be played. “All this will happen in a family, friendly environment with an area for kids, stalls, comedians, bands, dj’s and a beer garden with tight security,” said Mqolomba. The national artists include Mxo, Mandoza,

Lulo Cafe, Naked DJ, Thebe and an artist from Malawi namely Louie X. Some of the local artists to share the stage include 3rd Generation, Skank & The Roots, Duntone, Odwa, Dark Okes and DJ’s Cute and Fura. There will also be time for comedians to entertain the expected thousands of picnicgoers. Comedians like Mbu ManyLaughs, Tsepiso Nzayo, Siya Seya and Zikhona Msuthu will be present. There will be a VIP marquee for special guests, sponsors and supplies. Tickets are R80 and R250 for VIPs and are available at Computicket.

Workshop for local artists According to co-organiser Zolani Willie, there will be workshops for local and upcoming artists held by national artists on Monday, December 22nd at the Uitenhage Town Hall from 12:00 onwards. “This will be part of giving back to the community and developing local artists,” said Willie. Win double tickets to the circus Five lucky UD News readers can each win one set of double ringside tickets to the all new spectacular McLaren Circus 2014 on Monday, December 15th for their 19:30 show. McLaren Circus will be kicking off the 10th anniversary tour in Uitenhage, with the biggest and best production ever by McLaren Circus. “It’s been a long, hard road, but determination and love is what made McLaren Circus what it is today and it’s a very proud moment to present the 10th anniversary tour to South Africans across all nine provinces,” said Arnold Dickson from McLaren International Circus. “It’s an honour for us to start our tour in Uitenhage as two of the circus managers are born and bred in Uitenhage.” The circus will be performing at the Albertyn Primary sports fields in Van der Stel Avenue from Monday 15th to Sunday 21st December. The opening show will be Monday at 19:30 and then daily shows at 15:00 and 19:30. The all new McLaren Circus is a show that

should not be missed with a cast of international artists from all four corners of the globe. There will also be performances by Bengal tigers, African lionesses, camels, Burmese pythons, Frezian horses, perky poodles, miniature ponies and horses. Bon Voyage to Muir’s ‘Fairy Godmother’ REPORTER Most of us have been taught by that one teacher who was like the Fairy Godmother of Cinderella. He or she would teach, inspire, encourage, mother or father us, and many times create a magical journey of learning and discovery. Serene Bayman, who has been teaching at Muir College Boys’ High School for the past 38 years has been the Fairy Godmother of this college. She will be retiring at the end of the year from this oldest English-speaking school in the country. In the words of a wise woman, Bayman mindfully answered the following questions with sincerity and a knowing that a difference has been made in generations of students passing through Muir College. Why did you choose teaching as a pro fession? I sincerely believe that God directed me into the teaching profession. I’m thankful for the difficult times as I’ve grown, learnt from my mistakes and the challenges which I faced have strengthened my character. What is your fondest memory of Muir? The Grade 4’s went on an overnight educational outing to Cuyler Manor.

We slept in a barn on a hard concrete floor. Besides the fact that we had to keep over sixty extremely excited boys quiet during the night, I found it difficult to sleep on the cold, hard floor. At the crack of dawn, a little nine-year old, Roscoe Ratangee, stood next to my sleeping bag with a mug of hot coffee and said, “M’am, I’m so sorry the boys kept you awake.” Ah! Wasn’t that just so precious of him! What will you miss the most about the school? The Grade 4 Muirites are unbelievably helpful. They will move mountains to please their teacher. I will definitely miss their eagerness and enthusiasm. Always! What advice can you offer to aspiring teachers? Always be positive, patient and persistent. It may take time but sooner or later you’ll realise that each and every child is a gift from God. It is with sincere sadness that Muir College bid farewell to Serene Bayman, but also with gratefulness for her positive influence, lessons of knowledge and life learnt in her classroom. She is wished a happy retirement and many adventures for a journey filled with love and happiness.
