“The Metro is fully aware of the situation and for months has made nothing but empty promises to address the non payment issue,” said Deirdré Swift, SPCA Uitenhage chairperson of the management board.

“We have not been paid since November last year and are owed in excess of R364 000.”

“These non-payments have resulted in the SPCA not being able to purchase lucerne for animals entering the large livestock pound. We were forced to close the pound about 4 weeks ago and this resulted in stray animals not being brought in.

“It is an unacceptable situation that we as an animal anticruelty association currently

face. Sadly, the only losers here are the animals that desperately need our help - some of which were possibly being targeted by angry land owners,” said Swift.

On Tuesday, a 37-year old man was arrested on charges of malicious injury to property, contravention of the Animal Protection Act and illegally discharging of a firearm, after stray cattle were shot on his land.

Swift received information from Kristoff Adelbert, the Mayor’s Chief Officer, that he was under the impression that a payment was made last week.

“I was told that payment was done late last Friday and that we can expect the money in our account on Monday or Tuesday. On Monday I was informed that an amount of R198 436.20 was in the process of being signed for release. Just after 16:00, I was advised that owing to a systems error payment could not be effected as promised.”

Swift then informed them that the amount indicated (R198 436.20, fell far short of the actual outstanding amount (R360 000) to the SPCA. On Tuesday, Swift said she

awaited confirmation from the Metro’s Finance Department of an amount of approximately R240 000 which has been released for payment.

“This time I have been advised that the money will probably only reflect in our account by Wednesday (yesterday). I am still waiting to hear why full payment hasn’t been made, but the payment we received is better than nothing,” said Swift.

“Fortunately the public have been very good to us and we are currently using donated food for the small pound (cats and dogs)

“They are supposed to pay us for the feeding of stray animals.

But we receive nothing and they have also done no maintenance to any of the three kennels that belong to them. We are paying, from funds raised, to maintain those kennels.”

Swift said it is a nightmare.

They need to sit down and have the payment issues discussed with officials from the municipality, but it just does not happen.

“This is not a place to make money. Now we hear the municipality would like to put the premises out to tender. How can you put out something like this on tender? This means that the SPCA will cease to exist and that is scary. It will result in a serious animal welfare crisis and that there will be no outreach work done in the community.

The SPCA Uitenhage has been in operation at this site for the past 100 years,” said Swift.

UD awarded for its community involvement HEILIE COMBRINCK The UD News received the Outstanding Community Involvement award during the annual EP Media awards dinner which was held last Friday at Mannas in Port Elizabeth.

The event is held annually to honour the achievers in the EP Media group for their contribution in the past financial year. EP Media is a division of Media24, that publishes eight free local newspapers across the Eastern Cape, of which UD News is one.

According to EP Media general manager Tasmia Ismail, EP Media had a phenomenal year, not just stabilising in a difficult economic climate, achieving record profit numbers for EP Media, but also managed to grow its new newspapers Queenstown Express and the King William’s Town Express. country’s National Traffic Road Regulations and Transport Rules will as from today (May 11) completely prohibit motorists from transporting pupils in the goods compartment of their bakkies.

The enactment of the Amendment means parents whose children are transported at the back of bakkies have to find alternative ways to transport their children to school.

There are many schools whose pupils travel to school sitting or standing on the back of bakkies.

According to a statement released by Ar-

rive Alive, the Amendment seeks to curb the prevalent deaths of school children on roads.

Those caught violating the regulation will receive hefty fines and face imprisonment.

Amendment of regulation 250 of the Regulations says, “No person shall on a public road convey school children in the goods compartment of a motor vehicle for reward.”

The amendment continues: “No person shall convey any other person in the goods compartment of a motor vehicle for reward: Provided that the provisions of this subregulation shall not apply in respect of

a vehicle which complies with the provisions of the National Land Transport Act, 2009 (NLTA).”

It, however, does allow the transportation of people if the portion of the vehicle in which the persons are being conveyed is enclosed to a height of at least 350 millimetres above the surface upon which the person is seated and at least 900 millimetres above the surface on which such person is standing.

It must be enclosed in a manner and with a material of sufficient strength to prevent the person from falling from the vehicle when it is in motion.

Dam levels 10% lower than same time last year THE average levels of Eastern Cape dams are just over 10% lower than they were this time last year.

The Department of Water and Sanitation said in a media statement that at this time a year ago the average Eastern Cape dam levels were 72.3% compared to 61.9% this year.

The Algoa Water Supply System, which includes the Churchill, Impofu, Kouga,

Loerie and Groendal dams, are at 40.6% compared to 79.6% at the same time last

year.

The Amathole Water Supply System, which includes the Laing, Rooikrantz, Gubu, Bridle drift, Nahoon and Wriggleswade dams are at 70.9% compared to 88.5% at the same time last year.

The Department of Water and Sanitation is appealing to everybody in the province to use water sparingly to meet the demands of the future generation. – REPORTER

ometimes a dog just needs to speak out to add extra weight to the plight of a good person or institution. In this case it is the SPCA Uitenhage, therefore the human tekkies on my front feet.

I live with humans who call me Yster. In English, “yster” means iron, but in Afrikaans it is also a name given to living beings with exceptional resilience.

I feel honoured to have been given such a name – especially by humans.

In January this year I still thought that I must have done something terribly wrong for

At last I could go home with her.

Schools join funky tekkie lace campaign in aid of SPCA

Tekkie Tax will be held on Friday, May 26th and the Uitenhage & District SPCA is the only registered animal beneficiary in the Eastern Cape participating in the Tekkie Tax fund-raising campaign.

Local schools Laerskool Frans Conradie, Muir College and College Hill Preparatory have joined this campaign, helping to raise funds for a charity close to their hearts.

“Funds raised on behalf of the local SPCA will be allocated to the sterilization programme, purchase of medication, food and cleaning material for the 97 kennels,” said Deirdre Swift of the Uitenhage & District SPCA. This year the Uitenhage Lions Club is assisting with the Tekkie Tax drive in support of the local SPCA. “I believe that the success of the overall campaign could very much double up on the campaign of 2016 with these influential schools,” said Denis Murphy from the Uitenhage Lions Club.

ario van Wyk of Uitenhage has represented the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University at the 30th Corobrik Architectural Student of the Year Awards which were held yesterday at the Hilton Hotel in Johannesburg.

In this national competition, the country’s best architectural students from eight major universities are identified, based on their

final theses and presented with awards at regional events.

The winners of each of the regional competitions then go on to compete for the national title and a prize of R50 000 at the Corobrik Architectural Student of the Year Awards.

As this year’s top NMMU student Mario van Wyk’s thesis is titled “Horror in Architecture”, a romantic exploration of the exquisite corpse analogy.

Van Wyk says, “As a by-product of the urban environment we are left with open undefined spaces between developed areas where the accumulation of infrastructural layers exists such as storm water channels, railway lines, natural invasiveness and even ruins of old industrial remains. These kinds of spaces create urban barriers and breeding grounds for criminal activities.”

His thesis harnesses the romantic and functional qualities of such an area, converting it into a progressive system of human habitation with an innovative housing model. (-Heilie Combrinck)

Local butchery nominated as best in province

T

he country’s best butcheries, both nationally and regionally, were recently announced in Johannesburg at the 2017 Cleaver Awards and Uitenhage’s Cuyler Butchery was amongst them.

The Cleaver Awards is one of the initiatives of the Red Meat Industry Forum (RMIF) of South Africa to promote South African beef and to acknowledge outstanding service.

This year 6 national and 39 provincial butcheries won platinum or gold Cleaver Awards.

Cuyler Butchery earned a platinum Cleaver Award for being the best provincial butchery in the category for three and more tills in the Eastern Cape.

This is Cuyler’s 4th Cleaver Award (2010, 2014, 2015 & 2016).

“It is a great feeling to have won this award, especially as it is our customers who regard Cuyler Butchery’s quality, value, service and hygiene as the best,” said Leon Slabbert, owner of Cuyler Butchery.

“It is tough, as there are many aspects that have to be 100% in working condition every day, and you never know when the butchery will be assessed. SAMIC members assess butcheries thrice a year.

“They look at everything, even if ablution facilities are in tip-top condition, if all the cold and hot water taps work, a butchery’s involvement on social media, pricing and advertising, if there are recipes and even if our staff members can advise customers as to what meat to use for a specific meal, staff members’ clothing and many other aspects just have to be right,” said Slabbert.

Rudi van der Westhuizen, Executive Director of SAMIC (South African Meat Industry Company) said, “With our experience over the years since the Cleaver Awards started, the improvement on a year to year basis is noteworthy, notwithstanding the fact that most of the butcheries always try something new to improve their score and/or to stay on top.”

“The impact these awards have had on butchery standards in South Africa over the past few years is remarkable.”

These awards acknowledge butcheries which meet consumer expectations on instore hygiene, the supply of quality assured roller-marked South African beef, their level of competency in offering the best advice on meal preparations and perceived value for money. Butchers were judged according to three categories: Butcheries with four or more till points; Butcheries with three or fewer till points; Food market/supermarket butcheries.

A total of 35 000 butcheries entered the competition. The 150 finalists (who achieved 97% or more) were individually and anonymously assessed against a 212-point checklist, with some of the finalists scoring up to 99.8%. (­Heilie Combrinck)

Check your estate for a rental policy I

f you are buying a property in an estate or a cluster home complex, you should ensure that the homeowners’ association (HOA) has a formal policy covering the letting of homes in the development as well as the obligations of those owners who decide to become landlords.

This is necessary to protect property values in such developments, says Gerhard Kotzé, MD of the RealNet estate agency group.

“Most tenants will be happy to comply with HOA rules and live in harmony with their neighbours. But there are always those that persistently break the rules – and count on it being difficult for the HOA to get their absentee landlords to take any action against them, as long as they keep paying the rent.”

Show off of fancy pigeons at Altona school P

igeons have been linked to humans since ancient times. Already by the year 3200BC pigeons were kept in Egypt for meat purposes, as well as to be used as messengers.

Nowadays, 5217 years later, pigeons are even more popular and proving this will be the Eastern Cape Fancy Pigeon Association’s annual regional fancy pigeon show on Saturday at Altona Primary School in Greenbushes.

According to Nic Hanekom, secretary of the Eastern Cape Fancy Pigeon Association, the European Rock Pigeon (Columba Livia) is regarded as the forefather of all domesticated pigeons.

“It is quite possible that more than 1 000 different breeds exist that all form part of the species Columba Livia

Methuselahs Golf: This week’s IPS competition was all Funny, Fanie van der Bank. Competition winner on 23 points, nearest the pin on the 17th hole, two club on the 17th hole and to top it all, walked away with the whiskey draw. Despatch atlete skitter op nasionale vlak Hoërskool Despatch se atlete het by twee nasionale byeenkomste skitterend presteer.

By die Nasionale Hoërskole Kampioenskappe in Durban het die Drakies vier medaljes gewen.

Eerste plekke is behaal deur Tammy Leonard in o.19 hamergooi (50.4m) en Hanno du Plessis o.17 hamergooi (63.56m). Dané Coetzer het ’n tweede plek behaal in o.15 hamergooi (47.87m) en Shaylene de Jager was derde in o.17 hamergooi (46.95m).

plek in o.19 driesprong behaal en Danté Nel ‘n vierde plek in o.19 hamergooi.

Brandwag klop Tiere oortuigend 55-10 Hoërskool Brandwag het gister vyf uit nege wedstryde in die skool se jaarlikse Classic Clash teen Daniel Pienaar gewen.

Brandwag het tuis gespeel en sy tagtigste bestaansjaar in die hoofwedstryd met agt drieë teen een gevier vir ’n 55-10 oorwinning.

Die tuisspan was deurentyd op die voorvoet en was rustyd reeds 27-3 voor.

Daniel Pienaar se kaptein Ryan Oliphant het elf minute voor die eindfluitjie sy span se enigste drie aangeteken.

Die besoekers se losskakel Dylan Le Roux het vyf punte aangeteken met ’n strafskop en ’n verdoelskop.

Brandwag se kaptein en losskakel Chadwyn November het uitstekend gespeel en ’n drie gedruk. Brandwag se ander drieë is deur Chadd Adams (2), onderkaptein Elandré Smit (2), Waldo van Greunen, Le Klue Stokes en Dean Jordan gedruk. Vleuel Gavin Kriel het met ses doelskoppe en ’n strafskop geslaag.

In die ander uitslae het Brandwag se o.14A- en B-spanne verloor, maar die o.15A’s en B’s het gewen. Brandwag se o.16A-span het gewen, terwyl DP se o.16B-span gewen het. Die besoekers se derde span het gewen terwyl die tuisspan se tweede span gewen het. ;Brandwag agsteman Elandré Smit lyk byna asof hy ’n karate hou mik na Daniel Pienaar slot Henlo Stroebel om ’n laagvat af te weer.

Brandwag se Chadd Adams en skeidsregter Philip Bosch is aan die linkerkant en regs is Daniel Pienaar se Sithembiso Befile en Waldo van Greunen van Brandwag. Die tuisspan se losskakel Chadwyn November is op die agtergrond sigbaar.
