ong queues, long waiting hours and long lists of “excuses” why grant applicants must come back to the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office in Uitenhage, are all but good service delivery, especially to people who already are in financial need. This is according to Hannes Bekker from the Kruisrivier Residents Association, who after numerous complaints from members, visited the SASSA office himself on several occasions to monitor the situation. “I know of an incident where an applicant went to the office at 03:00 on November 27th as it was indicated that the person had to return on this date. “When eventually assisted the person was told ‘sorry come back on December 10th’. The same happened and the person was told ‘sorry come back on the 17th’, then ‘come back January 6th’, then January 17th, January 24th and then January 31st,” said Bekker. According to Bekker the reasons given for the person to come back varies from “it’s Bhisho’s fault, the officer is off sick, the officer’s child is sick” to “the officer is on leave.” “Grant applicants are being sent back home on an average of 3 to 8 times before finalizing the procedures. SASSA officials said they can only assist 120 persons per day and I’ve counted that from January 21st to 27th a total of 495 grant applicants were not being assisted.” Bekker said other issues raised by grant applicants include the lack of ablution facilities, rudeness by some of the SASSA personnel and no effective management of the queues. “In an incident an applicant arrived at 23:00 the previous day just to be first in the queue the next morning. Late arrivals will without any concern jump the queue. I’ve seen a person that was 30th in the queue and then later ended at 91st. This is not fair.”

How is power produced by turbines? THE construction of Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm is forging ahead, with 50 of the 60 wind turbines already erected! These towering machines’ long rotor blades are majestically turning in the wind, and can be viewed by commuters from the N2. This spectacular sight is causing quite a stir amongst locals and visitors to the region, who are curious to understand how exactly power is created by these soaring machines. “We are so pleased that the public are so engaged and interested in our Project about the process of creating power from the wind,” said Mark Pickering, General Manager of Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm. “Our Facebook page and call centre line are abuzz with questions,” he added. In simple terms, here is an outline of how wind turbines can transform free wind into electricity that powers our homes: )If the wind blows sufficiently, then wind

energy is converted to mechanical energy through the turning turbine blades. )The turbine blades transfer this mechanical energy via the shaft and gearbox (the large box on top) to the electrical generator that turns the mechanical energy into electrical energy. )This electrical energy is then made grid compatible. )The grid compatible energy is fed from the Wind Turbines via a network of underground cables across the wind farm to the project substation. The substation forms the connection point between our “local” wind farm grid and Eskom’s national grid. )The Eskom grid then “supplies” this energy to the consumers. Uitenhage High School’s 50th year celebrated I

t is a special year for Uitenhage High School as over the course of the next few months, all the school’s stakeholders, past and present, will be celebrating 50 years since it was established in 1964. Over the years this school has delivered many good academia, excellent leaders, top professionals, quality learners and sports persons that have excelled at either administration lever or on the field of play. “Ever since the pioneer work performed by the first principal, Harry Hendricks, his staff, learners and parents, this school has become a great beacon of hope for the entire Uitenhage community,” said Phillip Joseph.

“Who will forget where learners would have come from to attend school at ‘Die Bye’?” To celebrate and thank all contributors, the school has put together a programme for the year. In this way they would like to remember everybody’s contribution, especially those pioneers and those who have subsequently passed on. The 50-year celebration programme will commence in the appropriate fashion with a church service at Roselane Congregational Church on Sunday, February 16th at 10:00. Past learners who have become leaders and

Mandela and Luthuli exhibition at Uitenhage Museum An exhibition based on the lives of former President Nelson Mandela and Chief Albert Luthuli can be viewed at the Uitenhage Drostdy Museum in Caledon Street as from Tuesday, February 18th. The theme of the exhibition is “In conversation: Nelson Mandela & Albert Luthuli” and it was designed to celebrate 90 years of Nelson Mandela’s life and 50 years since Chief Albert Luthuli received the Nobel Peace Prize. “It also celebrates the lives of two icons of the liberation struggle, both former Presidents of the ANC and Nobel Peace Prize win-

ners. U’hage rugby player off to Shark Tank HEILIE COMBRINCK

he 18 year old Rameez Nell from Uitenhage is the latest local rugby player who has joined one of the country’s top rugby academies. “It is an opportunity of a lifetime and I am excitingly looking forward to starting a professional rugby career,” said Rameez Nell to the UD News prior to leaving for Durban to join the Sharks Rugby Academy. Rameez, a former Bergsig School full back is fast and unpredictable on the field and has a unique way of “weaving” through his opponents. He represented Eastern Province during the 2013 LSEN Craven Week and was nominated as the Player of the Tournament. He was also included in the national LSEN rugby team which participated in Durban. Rameez’s father, Richard Nell, once also a formidable rugby player and eighth man representing SARU in the late 1970s is proud of his son. “It is very emotional for me. I am proud of Rameez and really hope that he will establish himself as a professional rugby player. He has a natural flair, exciting style and good rugby sense to create opportunities on the field and I like that,” said Richard. As a u.19 Sharks player, Rameez will be coached by former Springbok rugby player - who also hails from Uitenhage - Deon Kayser. Interestingly, Kayser’s father, Dan Kayser once played alongside Richard Nell in their heydays of rugby. In making Rameez’s rugby dream come true, funds had to be raised and the Uitenhage community did the Nell like-father-like-son duo proud.

Pirates baseball held-off in a humdinger Pirates Baseball Club from Uitenhage held off Park Tigers to win 10-9 in a real humdinger to the amazement of the crowd. The combination of Elrich Tolmie, pitcher and Skuttie Bezuidenhout, catcher worked well for Pirates on the day. The game was locked at 3-3 in the third frame, and if it were not for Bezuidenhout, JP Benson and Hein van Loggenberg batting in the most RBI’s, Pirates would’ve had their backs to the wall. For Park Tigers, Hennie Stander, Mark Stopforth and Lyle Ferreira batted well and assisted in keeping the scoreboard ticking. =The Drostdy Tennis Club this year celebrates its 120th year. A few years ago the club has relocated to the courts at Magennis Park. These courts date back to 1894 and seen above, in its heyday, is some action at the then called “Southern Cross Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club”.

HEILIE COMBRINCK Uitenhage is home to what might be one of the country’s oldest tennis clubs where this elegant sport has been enjoyed for the past 120 years. Earliest records regarding tennis being played in Uitenhage date back to 1886 when a tournament was held at the Drostdy courts. They belonged to Mr E Philpott, a Civil Commissioner and Resident Magistrate who later presented these Drostdy courts to the town as Uitenhage’s first tennis courts and they were named “Eucalyptus Tennis Courts”. These courts were situated off Constitution Road. According to Derrick Manefeldt, chairperson of the Drostdy Tennis Club, the club later were relocated to the then newly built courts at the Drostdy Recreation Club in Prince Edward Street where the tennis club operated for many years before moving to the Magennis Park courts where it currently is. “These courts in Magennis Park have re-

Other schools and the public are welcome to participate. The event will be held from 12:00 to 14:00. All proceeds will be towards the polio campaign. During 1961 four of the courts were completely reconstructed with the new construction technique of all weather surfaces. The current clubhouse was built during 1972 thanks to the then chairman Trevor Whitfield and Peter Myburg. This was built partly on the foundation of the old pavilion which was completed in 1928. According to Manefeldt, no anniversary plans of the club’s 120th year have been finalized yet, but there will definitely be an occasion later this year to celebrate this milestone. )The Drostdy Park Tennis club will have its Annual General meeting at the Magennis Park Clubhouse on Monday, March 3 at 18:30.
