Unique aircraft heading to U’hage I

t’s heading to Uitenhage! Not the massive US bomber aircraft as displayed on the newly erected billboards across the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, but various much smaller unique and interesting aircraft.

The festival kicks off on the evening of Thursday, March 27th with entertainment and stalls. Entrance will be R10. On Friday, March 28th aircraft, motorcycles, veteran and brand new vehicles as well as off road vehicles will be part of the festival.

Entrance will be R20 for adults and R10 for scholars. Saturday, 29th will be full blast entertainment on and off the airfield, in the sky and also some off-road action in the neighbouring bundu. Entrance will be R50 for adults and R10 for scholars.

“This is a historic event. It will be the first official airshow held at the Uitenhage airfield and appropriately named the Doug Davidson Memorial Airshow. The airshow will be part of the successful Wings & Wheels Festival,” said Lourens Kruger, Wings & Wheels Festival organiser. Some of the eccentric aircraft which will take to the sky are owned by Stu Davidson and his son Patrick, descendants of the legendary Doug Davidson after which the airshow is named. The latter was a well-known businessman and aircraft enthusiast. Aircraft to be seen in action include the aerobatics Sukhoi, which has the capability

of literally hanging 90 degrees on its propeller in the sky. Then there will be a Stearman, Harvard, a Cessna 172, the spectacular Jet L39, helicopters from John Huddlestone, Russel Philip with his Whisper, and pilot Martin Venn will fly-in with his aerobatics RV7. “We are excitedly looking forward also to see one of only two Mustang Sally still in superb condition on the African continent. This powerful war bird is equipped with a Rolls Royce engine,” said Kruger. Pieter Wolmarans from Great Brak in the Southern Cape will be present with his Fly 4 Fun motor paraglider, whilst Tom Edwards will bring his motor paraglider trike all the way down from Johannesburg. “It will be an intensive, no dull moment, high impact and spectacular airshow of an hour and a half (14:00-15:30),” said Kruger. Chief of Airshows South Africa, Flight Director and Security Officer Rikus Erasmus will be present at the airshow.

“Our bill for petrol alone each month is about R15 000. Our overall monthly expenses come to over R50 000 and we are wholly reliant on donations from businesses and the public,” he said. The centre employs 10 fulltime staff and has three bakkies for call-outs as far afield as Steytlerville about 180km inland. The centre also answers many calls from around Port Elizabeth, Croucamp said. Croucamp, who added that the centre was caring for up to 200 animals, including dogs, cats, donkeys, cattle and geese.

Upon making the donation, Baywest MD Gavin Blows urged other Nelson Mandela Bay businesses to match or better the donation, saying businesses needed to “take care of their communities”. Blows made the donation after reading in local media about the cash-strapped centre’s plight. “The developers of Baywest, Abacus Asset Management and Billion Group, are both very community-minded when it comes to their projects around the country,” Blows said. “Serving our communities includes helping care for the pets that bring us joy.” The developers, who are on track to open the R1.7-billion Baywest Mall next March, are also involved in training initiatives – in conjunction with the Bay office of the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) – to train up SMMEs who are registered on a database for work on the mega project. Uitenhage SPCA manager Koos Croucamp said he was overwhelmed by the donation. “It’s our biggest donation for many years. There’s always a need for funding. It’s fantas-

50th Year get-together at school As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Uitenhage High School will be holding an informal get-together and evening of nostalgia as well as entertainment with stand-up comedy acts by Lindsey Klerk and company. New paramedics degree underway at NMMU O

.An overnight orientation camp where the applicants were placed in various real life scenarios.

ne of the first building blocks towards a fully-fledged medical school at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is now firmly in place, with 22 firstyear students who have enrolled in the new Bachelor of Emergency Medical Care (BEMC) programme. A first of its kind in the Eastern Cape, the four-year paramedics degree programme offers students unique training opportunities in the field of emergency medical care. The B(EMC) class of 2014 is made up of 16 men and six women, aged 17 to 43. “We have the most diverse group of people – from school-leavers who don’t know what to expect, to people who have years of experience in the industry,” says the delighted programme manager Nico Louw. With an Admission Point Score of 36 required, only 36 hopefuls were invited to undergo the comprehensive selection process, which included:

“The process is designed to get applicants outside their comfort zone and determine just how far they are willing to push the limits,” says Louw, who is a qualified paramedic himself. During the four-year-long programme, students will cover topics such as anatomy, physiology, physics, chemistry, pathology, pharmacology and diagnostics, with the major subject being Emergency Medical Care. They will complete all 12 rescue modules, preparing them for a range of rescue missions including fire, aquatic, aviation, motor vehicle and structural collapse rescue. Louw says NMMU also offers these students the unique opportunity of working hand-in-hand with local voluntary rescue organisations such as the Mountain Club of South Africa, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and Eastern Cape Lifesaving in the form of work-integrated learning. Graduates of the BEMC programme will ultimately be able to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as emergency care practitioners – the highest paramedic register in South Africa. The degree has been widely welcomed throughout the province especially given the dire shortage of health care professionals, including highly-qualified paramedics.

‘ConWin’ rugby teams get support from industry HEILIE COMBRINCK

ince Uitenhage Convent Primary and Winterberg Primary have joined their rugby teams and coaching expertise, the rugby scores also started to swing in their favour. According to John Dennis from Uitenhage Convent Primary, the two schools came upon

this plan on combined teams four years ago. “It is really going well. Last year our combined 7s team was the runner-up in the Ankervas 7s competition. The u.11 team lost only one game and the u.13 team has won seven out of their eleven games,” said Dennis. The growing popularity of rugby since the combination of the schools’ teams and their successes on the score boards came to the ears of the directors of Kruger-Duxbury Au-

tomation. They have decided to show their support by donating newly designed rugby jerseys to the u.13 “Con-Win” team. According to Chris van Dalen, from Winterberg Primary and u.13 coach, these new jerseys will mean a lot to the young and eager rugby-players. The Electrician will be responsible for servicing and overseeing the entire Montego Pet Nutrition factory plant elecrtical system. Description This designation within Montego Pet Nutrition will be responsibile for the smooth running of the factory plant in order to eliminate downtime within the overall electrical infrastructure. Essential Functions Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Fault Finding • Experience in and programming of PLC’s, soft starters and Schneider VSD’s. • Factory maintenance: 3 phase and single phase. • New electrical installations: 3 phase and single phase. • Must be computer literate on MS Office suite. • Have an endorsed driver’s license and own transport. • Wireman’s license: Installation Electrician. • Undertake all installations and maintenance on the Montego Pet Nutrition site. • Experience with switch gear, star/delta operations and DOL starters. • Knowledge of HT/LT transformers, Back-up generators and ring main units. • Repair Hand tools Requirements: • Matric or Equivalent. • Should preferably be fluent in English and Afrikaans. • Must be honest and hard working. • Minimum five years’ experience as an Electrician in a Manufacturing environment. • A relevant degree/diploma along with at least five years’ experience in wiring, 3 phase, single phase, switch gear, star/delta operations, DOL starters and programming of PLC’s as well as soft starters. orsepower has been added to the marketing of the annual Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees through the sponsorship of a Hilux 2.5 D4D Double Cab for the next year by Algoa Toy-
