Uitenhage is known for its automotive industry, but few locals are aware that it also is home to another exceptional industry which is fast becoming a much sought after brand internationally. “Hinterveld’s private labelling comprises 70% of the business with the majority of our mohair products being exported to clients in Paris, Milan, UK, Germany, Tokyo, Russia and various other destinations,” said Jackie Gant, Marketing Manager of Hinterveld, weavers of mohair and
other natural fibres. “But we want to see more local clients at our factory shop here in Uitenhage! Products at the factory shop are branded as Windfall which means ‘a stroke of good fortune’. “We trial different designs for customers to choose from. Those that are left over from the range exported are channelled to our outlet and branded. Additionally we offer a Hinterveld stock supported range which allows customers to buy one or 100 of a specific collection and design. Currently
some of the discontinued 2012 stock supported range is available. Our factory shop also offers yarns and mohair socks.” Hinterveld is part of a bigger group, the Stucken Group, that started 150 years ago. Grandfather Rudie Stucken came out from Germany after WWII and started his wool trading business in Uitenhage. The Stuckens eventually bought Gubb & Inngs so that they could wash, process and comb wool and mohair which is exported. A couple of years ago the Stucken group bought Mohair Spinners South Africa (MSSA). Three years ago they added Hinterveld weaving mill (previously Pure Cape Textiles) to the Group “Hinterveld also does private labour. In other words where clients can decide on their own design and colours and have it labelled, which is ideal for customer or corporate gifts. “At Hinterveld mill, we are small enough to collaborate with local designers, but big enough to compete internationally,” said Gant. Fitness day at gym in aid of charity The public is invited to participate in a fitness day on Saturday, with all proceeds going towards the CMR Uitenhage. Fitness Etc Gymnasium has played host to several Saturday fitness events during the past couple of weeks. On this particular occasion they want to create awareness regarding health and fitness among residents and invite them to participate in this fun-filled event. “It is our passion and great belief that exercise develops character and should be a vital component in our daily activities. Exercise can teach you so many physical and psychological qualities you can use in everyday life,” said Sheldon Vermaak, instruc-
tor at Fitness Etc Gymnasium. Proceedings will kick-off with a short presentation on the benefits of exercise and healthy eating, and also a 10 minute demonstration regarding self-defence techniques before the fitness session commences. There will be four different instructors guiding participants through aerobics, hiphop, abs and full body toning (swiss ball, weights, steps and mats which will all be supplied). Entry fee per person is R30 with all proceeds going towards the great work of CMR Uitenhage. Entries are available at the gymnasium and close 08:30 Saturday morning.
Activities start at 09:00 through until 11:00 at Fitness Etc Gymnasium at 2 Canon Street, Uitenhage. “During this time we encourage local businesses, individuals and our own members to support the CMR Uitenhage and its valiant cause by making formal donations at the gymnasium. =The construction work of a well-known fast food burger outlet at the corner of Caledon and Baird Streets is developing fast. Consumers can look forward to enjoying the taste of this new brand in town which is expected to open in the second half of the year. The outlet is situated next to the historic Blenheim House in Baird Street. This imposing dwelling with its Cape Dutch features was erected in 1815 as a single storey structure. A second storey with a decorated fretted timber verandah was added in 1903. It was declared a National Monument during 1981.

Sports day held by antidrug support group T
here are various drugs being sold in the neighbourhoods of Uitenhage and Despatch. Communities in these areas are requested to assist Families Against Drugs support group in building a drug free society and to make a meaningful contribution towards the national fight against substance abuse. “Often the addiction occurs not through an individual’s own choice but, through reasons beyond their control,” said Siehaam Salie from the Families Against Drugs support group in Uitenhage. FAD has been running meetings in Uitenhage since April 2012 and is affiliated with FAD Port Elizabeth which was established in 2011. According to Salie the aim of FAD is to create a support system and a fellowship to families who are affected by loved ones who unfortunately became addicted to drugs. “If you have already used drugs and are scared of becoming dependent, reach out to FAD and get help. Remember that, however much trouble you think that you are going to be in by asking for help, you will be in a lot worse trouble if you do not.” Drugs fall into various categories: Depressants include heroin, mandrax, and alcohol; stimulants include cocaine and ecstasy and hallucinogens such as LSD. These categories of drugs can be smoked, inhaled, snorted, swallowed or injected. “Different drugs cause different feelings and responses in individuals. Drugs can be very dangerous in any form.
The more drugs an individual uses, the more drugs will be required and that is how they become addicted. “Individuals require help and support to recover from an addiction. Anybody who needs assistance with addiction is welcome to attend our meetings.” FAD Uitenhage meetings are on Tuesdays 19:30 or alternatively contact Gert on 0074 257 6155 or Peter 0083 626 5093. Family support meetings FAD runs a family support group meeting every Tuesday in Uitenhage at the Kamesh police offices at 19:30. On Monday nights, an NA (narcotics anonymous) meeting is held at the same venue and on Fridays at 18:30 a 12 step meeting, convened by Gert. “We would like to thank the Kamesh police and Uitenhage High School for assisting FAD. Together we will make a difference in our community,” said Salie. Sports day on Saturday FAD will be hosting a Sports Day on Saturday at the C. W. Hendrickse Primary School sports ground to promote drug awareness at primary schools. Four primary schools (Dalrose, Vérité, Seagull and C.W. Hendrickse) will compete in a mini-rugby tournament. Nou moet ons die Oos-Kaap gaan verteenwoordig in die nasionale rondte

The East Cape-Off Road Club (ECOC) held the CNF Motor Spares, Jeffreys Bay leg of the Data Scout Championship over the past weekend. The day brought forth a great turn-out despite the heavy winds and rain with thirteen cars starting the race,

including another novice car. The race consisted of four laps including long stretches and some rough patches. André Ferreira proved to be the best driver of the day and came in first. Jeff Guscott and his navigator, Shaun Bekker took second place. Riaan Vermeulen came in third with his navigator, Charlene Keyser. In the junior category Wian Strydom and navigator Rehan Strydom were the first to cross the winning line. The day ensured great action for both competitors and spectators. It was a huge success overall. The East Cape Off-Road Club would like to thank Jannie Ferreira and Cobs Creek for the great racing venue. HEILIE COMBRINCK In an effort of true camaraderie the local Round Table 14 and a mobile crane business have restored the historic Howziter cannon in Rich Street which was recently pushed off its pedestal by vandals.
Old Bill Ockie Basson from the Uitenhage Moths said; “This is fantastic. We are very thankful the local Round Table and Fanie Claassen for their support.” Crane operator Stefan du Plessis enjoyed the privilege, with his expertise of being in charge of the 60 ton Tadano crane, to replace the cannon within minutes without any hassles. According to De Vrey, “If it were not for the barrel which stuck into the cement, it surely would have been for ever as scrap metal.” Joining the camaraderie, Isak Kelsey from C&M Hydraulics in Kruis River will install anchors in securing the cannon to ensure us it not being pushed off the pedestal again.
“I have known this cannon since I was a child and have a photo of myself standing next to it when it still was at Cannon Hill. Therefore I thought, as a service club, it is our responsibility to support the Moths and help to put the cannon back where it belongs,” said Hein de Vrey, Chairman of Uitenhage 14 Round Table. The Howitzer dates back from World War I and is one of only five of its kind imported to South Africa.
