Halfmiljoen se ou geld gesteel BETTIE GILIOMEE ’n Munte- en banknoteversamelaar van Uitenhage en sy gesin is Vrydag in hul huis oorval deur twee mans – waarvan een gewapen was – en van sy versameling van sowat R500 000 beroof. Eugene Mostert, die adjunkhoof van die Laerskool Albertyn op dié dorp, se versameling strek oor meer as 25 jaar en sluit onder meer Krugermunte met ’n kataloguswaarde van R250 000 in, asook £10-note met ’n internasionale kataloguswaarde van R200 000. Volgens Mostert het die twee mans Vrydag omstreeks 14:00 by hul huis in Annastraat, Van Riebeeckhoogte, geklop. “Ons het gedink dit is iemand van die apteek wat ’n pakkie kom aflewer. My seun Stefan het die voordeur oopgemaak. Daar was twee mans en

een het ’n geskenkpakkie vasgehou,” het Mostert gesê. Stefan (27) is beveel om op die vloer te lê, asook sy ma, Lizelle, toe sy gaan ondersoek instel het. ’n Niksvermoedende Mostert het op sy vrou en seun op die sitkamervloer afgekom en is ook deur die mans, waarvan een met ’n pistool gewapen was, beveel om op die vloer te lê. Mostert se ander seun, Wessel (23), is deur die rowers in die huis opgespoor en ook aangehou. “Die een met die vuurwapen was aggressief, maar die ander een was rustiger en het selfs vir ons gesê die Here sal ons veilig hou, ons moenie bekommerd wees nie. Ons moet net doen wat hulle sê.” Mostert is beveel om die kluis oop te sluit. “Ek is oortuig hulle het geweet van die geldversameling en presies wat in die huis aangaan,” het hy gesê. Die rowers het ook Lizelle se trouring van haar vingers afgeknip en die

seuns se twee skootrekenaars en beursies met kontant geneem. Niemand is in die voorval beseer nie. Volgens Mostert is die versameling nie verseker nie, aangesien die versekeringspremie hierop te hoog sou wees. “Vir ons het dit nooit oor die geldwaarde van die versameling gegaan nie, maar oor die genot wat ons daaruit geput het om dit te versamel,” het hy gesê. Volgens lt.kol. Priscilla Naidu, polisiewoordvoerder, is die polisie op die mans se spoor. “Ons vermoed die verdagtes sal probeer om die geld aan versamelaars en winkels wat tweedehandse goedere verkoop te verkwansel. Ons doen ’n beroep op die publiek om nie hierdie items te koop nie, want indien hulle daarmee gevang sou word, sal hulle aangekla word,” het Naidu gesê. Mense met inligting word versoek om speur-ao. Newly appointed fundraiser at pregnancy centre Alison Watson has been appointed as the fundraiser for New Life Crisis Pregnancy Centre, replacing Leslie Gilbert who resigned at the end of August. Watson is excited about this appointment and brings a wealth of fundraising knowledge to the team. According to Jean Downey, director at New Life CPC, volunteers have ministered to over 1 745 people during 2012. This includes youth, men, women and children. “We wish to sincerely thank

the community of Uitenhage for enabling us to impact their lives and also helping to make a difference in many families through practical assistance,” said Downey. “All the volunteers are enjoying a well-deserved rest and will continue to serve our community with renewed hearts in 2013,” said Downey. roete is asemrowend, maar dit het die mees onbegaanbare paaie wat ons nog gery het. Bestuurders van 4x4 voertuie het ons gestop en gesê daar is geen manier dat ons dit met die VW Beetle gaan maak nie,” sê Charlie Muller. Hy en sy reisgenoot Marius Kilian, het dié 1974 VW Beetle omskep en toegerus om die bergpas-avonture aan te pak. Kilian is stelselmatig be-

sig om sy sig te verloor en wil graag soveel moontlik bergpasse in die land deurkruis terwyl hy nog kan sien. “Naudesnekpas was die ergste, ons het ’n uur en ’n half aan 30km gery. Dit is 6500m bo seevlak en die lug is so dun ons kon nie eens rook nie. Die hoogte bo seevlak het ook ‘n effek op die Beetle gehad en ek moes vir lank in eerste rat ry.

Nuwe klank vir gospelgroep Daar heers opgewondenheid onder die lede van die gospelgroep Grace Unlimited nadat hulle onlangs splinternuwe musiekinstrumente in ontvangs geneem het. Funds generated at Carnival used to assist the needy

For the Rotary Club of Uitenhage, the yearly Street Carnival was once again a huge success. “People from all over attended the Carnival. We even had a stall vendor from the Congo. For some of these stallholders the Uitenhage Carnival is the only Carnival they attend, because it is the only festival they get an income from,” said Eurike Greeff, President of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage. For the people attending the event, it is two days of music, entertainment, Miss Carnival, enjoying what the many stalls have to offer and the highlight of switching on of the festive lights. “The third day we ended off this joyous occasion with a gospel show to say thank you to our Lord for once again allowing us to have fun and joy in our town by bringing about 180 000 people together through peace and service. “For the Rotary Club of Uitenhage, the Carnival is the biggest fund raising project each year. It is one of few festivals in the

Libhongolethu (IPTS) starts operating soon UD NEWS REPORTER

THE long-awaited Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) has been launched officially on November 29 and is set to start operating soon. Libhongolethu, meaning Our Pride, is an integrated public transport system that is safe, affordable and efficient. “This transport system brings us closer to becoming a world-class city that will empower and benefit the residents and commuters of the Bay,” stated a press release issued by the municipality. Libhongolethu, the pilot project of the R1-billion public transport project, rolls out with the following seven routes running between Port Elizabeth, Despatch and Uitenhage:

Route 301: PE CBD – Coega Start point: Lillian Diedericks building, Govan Mbeki Avenue. End point: security gate. Bus stops used: CBD, Addo Rd, Coega Gate • Time of operation: 5.15am - 9am, 3.30pm - 6.30pm (weekdays only) • Solo low floor

Route 300: PE CBD – Triangle Start point: Lillian Diedericks building, Govan Mbeki Avenue. Bus stops used: Mostly median stops in dedicated lanes. Direction of service: Triangle will be operated in both the clockwise and anti-clockwise direction • Time of operation: 6am - 8pm (weekdays)

‘Thanks’ for supporting Tree of Joy The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South would like to thank all who purchased a Christmas present which will be handed out to orphans in the community. The Tree of Joy project was set up at Levyvale Super Spar at the end of November. “The public generously purchased 230 gifts valued at R11 500 which will now be distributed to five orphanages in our community. These gifts will bring some joy and happiness into the lives of some disadvantaged children at this special time of the year,” said Marilyn Klassen for the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. “A special thanks must go to Daan Olivier,

his management and especially his staff who so willingly gave of their time and effort to ensure that the project ran so smoothly. “Thank you also to Rotarian Nick Bakker who was in attendance at the stand at Spar three times a week and every weekend until all the gifts were purchased, as well as the Rotarians who assisted at different times.” Through the generosity of the local community the idea of this being a season of giving was shown to be true. “We now have 230 children who will be able to have a merrier Christmas. Lions to the rescue

For more than 85 years Lions Club members have been united in a single cause, helping the less fortunate. Incorporated in 1968 the charitable arm of the Organization, Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) has to date approved more than $280 million in grants to fund causes such as humanitarian services, disaster relief, etc. to mention but a few, that address community needs and day

to day problems. When major flooding occurred in the Eastern Cape, Lions District 410D applied to LCIF for a Disaster Relief Grant and was awarded a $10 000 grant. The grant was shared between Port Alfred and the Port Elizabeth areas. To this effect Lions put together food parcels with the contents placed in sealable 20 litre buckets for storage and which later could be used to collect and store water. Through liaison with the NMBM Disaster Management Team, Councillors Marion Harning (NMBM) and Siena Baartman (Uitenhage) the food parcels and blankets were handed over to community members at the Xaba Community Hall in Langa, Uitenhage. The above reaffirms Lions’ strong belief that many people working together can achieve more than individuals acting alone

According to the organisers of the Metro’s summer events, Soul Good, the Opening of the Season programme will commence at 4pm and run until 1am. Apart from the traditional fireworks display, there will be performances by some of the Bay’s top musicians and artists such as Genesix, New Afroteens, L.Vovo and Jay. The circus is also coming to the Bay and will be pitching its tent at the Walmer-West Primary school from Friday, December 14 until January 6. Also on the Summer programme is the Emayhuyhi Festival on December 27 at the Jabavu Stadium in Uitenhage. Now in its second year, this picnic style event will focus on jazz and soul music. Fireworks are also planned for the New Year’s Eve Celebrations which will also be held at Hobie Beach. The proceedings will start from 4pm until 1am with the fireworks at midnight. Artists that will perform are Brickz and DJ Zan D. As is tradition, there is also a big New Year’s Eve event planned for Wells Estate with a fireworks display.

Photo: NCEBA DLADLA NCEBA DLADLA 15-year old Vuyokazi Hlwatika of Uitenhage has been accepted as a student at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. Vuyokazi of Bauhinia Street, Rosedale, who is known as Vuyo to family and friends, will be study-

ing Grade 10 at the famous United States TV-host’s academy in Johannesburg from next year. Vuyo will be part of the third group of girls drawn from across the country to study at the academy which was first opened in 2006. The second group matriculated at the school a week ago. “This is a dream come true for

me. I am so excited to be selected to join the academy,” said Vuyo, showing PE Express Indaba the letter of acceptance from the institution’s head Anne van Zyl. The youngest daughter of the late Reverend Madoda and Thembisa Hlwatika is a born leader and has served in many leadership positions. She is a former headgirl of Convent Primary School and member of Riebeek College’s Learners Representative Council (LRC). She aspires to become a Forensic Scientist - specialising in blood splatter pattern analysis - which she hopes to study at UCT or at an American University. She attributes her success to being ambitious, goal-setting and hard working. Vuyo decided to join Oprah Winfrey’s academy when she saw the advert in a magazine at the school library only two days before the closing date. “There was no way I could cut out the advert in the school’s magazine, so I told my mother about the advert. “We quickly bought the magazine and emailed the application from an internet cafe,” said Vuyo proudly. She had to write three tests and was interviewed before she finally received the letter with the good news. Her mother, Thembisa, a former teacher thanks God for being a true saviour who answers prayers. “Vuyo likes school. I believe that as a disciplined hard worker she is going to be successful at the academy. I brought my children up with Christian values and respect,” said Thembisa. Vuyo’s eldest sisters Nozuko (20) is studying Business Management Diploma at Varsity College in Cape Town while Nolubabalo (19), a former Miss PE Teen, studies BA Corporate Communications at the same institution in PE.

Spicy Summer pasta salad This recipe is ideal for a summer salad with a whole lot of zing. Ingredients: 1/2 packet noodles (screws) 1 green pepper, diced 1 onion, diced 2 tsp hot curry powder 7ml salt 15ml cooking oil 1 tin (115g) tomato paste 1 tin Indian Style diced tomatoes 125ml sugar, 125ml vinegar and 125ml oil

Preparation: 1. Cook the noodles until soft but firm. 2. Heat oil in a frying pan and fry onion and green pepper until onions are transparent. 3. Add salt and pepper and fry a little. Add curry powder and cook. Add tomato paste and Indian Style diced tomatoes and cook through. 3. Add sugar, vinegar and oil. Cook through. Let mixture cool a little. Pour over noodles and mix.

Homeowner blocked by occupation certificate

A reader has approached the Property Poser panel about an occupation certificate, which stands between him and the dream home he has built. The reader writes that the residence is nearing completion after four years. He tells us that the project was not financed via a mortgage bond and that he built only as and when he had cash reserves to do so. The builder has now advised the reader that he needs a certificate of occupancy from the local municipality before the house can be formally occupied. Thus far the reader has had no luck in obtaining any information regarding such a certificate and has requested some guidance as to how he can go about getting it. According to Sean Radue of Radue Attorneys in Nelson Mandela Bay, the abovementioned certificate is indeed a requirement in terms of the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act. “It indicates that all requirements have been met, that the house has been constructed in accordance with the provisions of the act and that it is ready for occupancy.” Radue says it is really to safeguard the owner by ensuring that the residence has been inspected and can be safely occupied. “The certificate specifies the type of building and is even required by the municipality before water and electricity deposits can be accepted for a newly built property.” The requirements for obtaining such a certificate include approved building plans from the municipality, as well as a completion certificate from a registered structural

Boks need more ‘blitz’ THIS SPORTING LIFE BY MICHAEL SHAFTO OF recent times the South African Sevens rugby team has been given the nickname, Blitzbokke. With a forgiving nod in the direction of misspelt Afrikaans, “Lightning Boks” is as good a translation as any. Have they earned it, though? Well, yes and no. Certainly a week ago in Dubai they looked anything but lightning. More accurate would have been plain lethargic. First they were knocked out of the elite Cup echelon of this second stop of the annual international circuit – and, as if that weren’t enough, were thoroughly outplayed in the

second division Bowl final by Argentina. Fast forward to last weekend here in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium – a truly stunning arena which must surely feature increasingly as a venue for international sport – and it was, at least to start with, an altogether different story. The South Africans, with all that “blitz” implies, and several team members like stand-in captain Frankie Horn, Cecil Afrika, Paul Delport, Cheslin Kolbe, Chris Dry and others, putting their best foot forward, it looked as though the “Blitz Boys” were ready to earn their stripes. They would surely not only put the Dubai performance behind them, but would shrug off, too, last year’s dis-

appointment at the Mandela Stadium when they were well beaten in the final by New Zealand, thus denying the All Blacks the honour of winning four consecutive titles in PE. It’s history now. The All Blacks though they lost their final pool game to Fiji, now have that fourth PE title in their pockets and are once more champions. Where did it all go so wrong for the Boks? To be a champion side like the All Blacks, coach Paul Treu’s players need to look at themselves carefully. They need to demonstrate sounder all-round judgement, greater consistency and determination on defence. More appreciation of their opponents’ attacking intentions. Under-inflated tyres rob fuel efficiency As South Africans get set for travelling, tyre manufacturer Goodyear has issued a reminder that correctly inflated tyres can save significantly at the pump and even more. It also promotes safety, even tyre wear, enhances ride comfort and it maximises fuel economy. Lize Hayward, Goodyear Group Brand Communications Manager said running a tyre just 20% under-inflated could increase fuel consumption by as much as 10%. “An under-inflated tyre uses more energy, increasing rolling resistance and robbing the vehicle of fuel efficiency. At today’s fuel prices, and especially during this holiday season when people generally travel a lot further, 10% is a considerable and unnecessary expense that could be saved by a little more fresh air! “As well as being heavy on your pocket, running under-inflated tyres also reduces their tread life which means they will need to be replaced sooner than should be necessary. In addition it can be dangerous – studies show that up to 87 per cent of all flat

tyres have a history of under-inflation,” Hayward said. Statistics also reveal that one in every three cars has at least one under-inflated tyre and, while nearly seven in ten drivers say they wash their vehicles every month, barely more than half check tyre pressure in that period. The majority of drivers (71%) forget to check the pressure in their spare tyre at all. Get Free Vehicle Safety Check Countrywide According to Goodyear, motorists should have their vehicles and tyres inspected at professional tyre and service outlets. Hi-Q offers a free 10-point safety check on vehicles. This entails checking all four tyres plus the spare for tread depth and pressure, the front and rear shock absorbers, the brake pads, discs and fluid, as well as the battery, exhaust and wiper blades. Should any of the vehicle checks highlight a warning or faulty part, the technician will recommend the correct course of action.

Brilliant finish to offroad season

he favoured offroad race venue near Motherwell was utilized by the East Cape Offroad Club (ECOC) to host the last round of the Data Scout Challenge for 2012 and the drivers absolutely loved it!

There was a very good mixture of fast straights, long turns and quite a few tricky sections which tested the riders’ abilities to the maxi-

mum. Racing started at 10:00 in ideal conditions with just enough wind to blow the dust away. In the end the result for the drivers was as follows: 1. Werner Olivier; 2. André Ferreira; 3. Stefan Potgieter. Mariska Olivier finished as top navigator for the day followed by Pieter Lombard second and Ferdinand Stumke in third position. These results were crucial as at the beginning of the day the top four drivers were within eight points of one another! In the end Werner Olivier and Ilze Grundling

shared the spoils as driver and navigator champions. In second spot was André Ferreira and Mariska Olivier and third went to Martin Kleingeld Junior and Ferdinand Stumke. This has been an incredible season for the new club with a good number of entries and they are looking forward to the new season!
