open to give, stays open to receive. God has blessed us and in thanking him for blessing us, we want to be a blessing unto others,” Mihlali said. The Adam brothers point out that their work would not have been possible without the regular support from their friends at their respective schools and their father, Sandile. Their support structure is also involved in

their latest endeavour, which is to help avert the city’s water crisis. “Executive Mayor Athol Trollip recently raised awareness about water shortages in Nelson Mandela Bay and this motivated us, the Adam Goodwill Ambassadors, to also encourage the youth to step up and be involved in helping to save water in every possible way,” explained Mihlali. Hijackings: Beware of strangers flagging vehicles down M

otorists should not under any circumstances stop for strangers who try to flag them down. This stern warning sent out by the police follows recent reports of vehicle hijackings with a similar modus operandi. “Hijackers are professionals and they plan their attacks carefully, so motorists are advised to be vigilant at all times and not to be naive when confronted by the opposite sex,” said police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu. According to her two people were hijacked in separate incidents in the Humewood and Algoa Park areas. In the first incident, on April 4, 2017, the

complainant, who drives a jikeleza taxi, was flagged down by a woman near Kenako Mall. “The woman informed the driver that her brothers were waiting further down the road. As soon as the driver stopped, two men got into the vehicle and threatened him at gunpoint. The driver was taken to Perseverance where he was robbed of his cash and his Mazda 323 vehicle,” Naidu said. In a similar incident, during the early hours of April 5, a 24-year-old man was hijacked in Strand Street in Humewood after stopping for a woman who allegedly flagged him down. “As he stopped, two unknown men got into the vehicle and forced him to drive to a block

of flats where a third person got in and a TV was also loaded into the vehicle. The complainant drove to the taxi rank and was ordered to get out and run. The vehicle, a VW Golf, was recovered in the taxi rank minus the radio and speakers.” Naidu added that drivers should use their discretion and always be alert when driving. “Strange behaviour by pedestrians (in these cases women) must be viewed with suspicion. Always look around when stopping at traffic lights, especially late at night or in the early hours of the mornings. “Make sure that the doors are locked at all times. If surprised by the sudden ap-

The Adam Goodwill Ambassadors have been involved with many different charity projects, such as donating school shoes to needy children. “Water is a basic human right that should be supplied by our government, but we also have the responsibility to save the water that we currently have and use it efficiently,” said Litha Adam. “However, we can make a difference and save water, particularly in our schools.”

Mihlali, a prefect at St George’s College, wants to encourage all SRC members and prefects of every school in the metro to collectively champion the following in favour of the future: “Place 500ml bottles filled with sand/soil into the cisterns of every toilet in schools by March 31. It would be ideal if the SGBs and our principals could report to our district offices the progress done so that we could be able to quantify the collective efforts of saving water done by future leaders who are prefects and SRC members in our schools,” said Mihlali. “SGBs and prefects can disseminate the call by encouraging students to place these 500ml bottles in every cistern of the toilets in every household in the metro. Lastly, when this has been done, push and pull back the lever to dilute the concentration. “If this initiative is adhered to in every household, each person could be saving more than five litres of water per day,” said Mihlali. Litha added, “It would be profound if we could collectively act today and ensure our future has adequate water.”

Project to test quality of towns’ drinking water Every South African citizen has a right to clean drinking water. The civil rights organisation AfriForum has launched a national project which they call its Blue and Green Drop Project, focusing on the efficacy of drinking water and sewerage plants in towns across South Africa. “The Blue Drop Project tests the quality of your town’s drinking water and the Green Drop Project tests the quality of the sewage water in your town,” said Julius Kleynhans,

Gala concert to celebrate church’s 150th year S

esquicentennial anniversary … now there’s a term not heard too often! Well it all has to do with a gala concert on Saturday, April 29th in celebration of the 150th year of St Katharine’s Anglican Church, the imposing Victorian building in the heart of Uitenhage. In building the church, locally quarried rough-hewn stone was used and the foundation stone was laid in 1867. Under slate since 1966, St Katharine’s treasures include some exquisite stained glass, a magnificent memorial reredos and the entirely original 1911 Norman and Beard 18 stop organ. The organ, which is powerful enough to lead a capacity congregation of almost 300, will be in action at the gala concert of choral, brass and organ music. The visiting 24 voice choir of the Cathedral Church of St Cyprian the Martyr, Kimberley, will be under the baton of their cathedral organist and master of the choristers, Peter Black. They will be joined by a further dozen local singers, members of the newly re-founded Port Elizabeth Choristers. Professor Erik Albertyn’s Nelson Mandela

University brass and percussion ensemble (comprising three trumpets, three trombones, French horn and Timpani) will join three talented young organists who share the organ bench, providing accompaniment for the choral items. The gala concert starts at 18:00 on Saturday, April 29th and the evening continues with a gourmet cheese and wine tasting reception in St Katharine’s Hall, to which all adult audience members are invited. Please note that seating for the 240 tickets being made available to the public is unreserved. Tickets, priced at R100, which include the cheese and wine tasting, are selling fast. Easter sunrise service back at Cannon Hill The Easter Sunrise Service will be held at Cannon Hill. This decision is final after the organisers were overwhelmed by requests to not move this special event to Willow Dam. “Many people were disappointed that the sunrise service was planned to be hosted at Willow Dam. “The initial reason for changing the venue was because Willow Dam was suggested being safer,” said Major Valerie Potgieter from The Salvation Army in Uitenhage.

“Members of the public responded and asked us please to change the service back to Cannon Hill as it is a special place everyone knows and is strategically positioned. “I agree that Cannon Hill is the ideal place for the sunrise service. It has been all the years. People have offered to help clean up at Cannon Hill the Saturday before the service,” said Major Potgieter. The Salvation Army’s annual Sunrise Service in celebration of Easter will therefore be held at 06:00 on Sunday, April 16th at

Cannon Hill. The pubic are invited to join the team in watching the sun rise. Participants are requested to bring along their camp chairs and torches. School’s mass dance Guinness World Record attempt D

espatch Preparatory or “the school on the hill” will be attempting a Guinness World record on Friday, 21 April 2017, in the form of a mass African dance performed by all their learners and staff. The current record is held by an African dance group that entered 503 participants. Despatch Preparatory will be entering 526 dancers ranging in age from 5 to 62 years. “The previous dance attempt was performed by adults. So, our attempt is a little more daunting but we are very enthusiastic and excited to bring this type of exposure to our little town,” said acting principal Madeléne Sachse. According to Anjé Kritzinger, head of the events committee at the school, it is quite an effort to enter for a Guinness World Record.

“But it definitely is worth the effort. “It has taken our staff weeks of practice and time offerings, but we know the value of this project to our learners and our school.” Luister!FM will be broadcasting live from the event at the school and local photographer Annelie Jonker will be taking the photographic evidence for the Guinness World Record portfolio. “The school invites the public to watch us attempting our mass dance on Friday, 21 April at 09:00. “So please come and join in all the festivities of this once-in-a-lifetime event,” said Jonker. Die kaalvoet-netbalspelers van ’n Despatch laerskool het die harte van ’n gemeenskap geraak en sosiale media is ingespan om uiteindelik aan elkeen van dié meisies ’n splinternuwe paar tekkies te gee. Netbalspelers van Hoërskool Despatch het tydens die NMMU/SPAR-netbalkliniek die nood raakgesien toe spelers van Despatch Primêr sonder tekkies opgedaag het. Die hoërskool netbalspelers het daar en dan besluit om iets te doen. Op sosiale media en by die skool is ‘n beroep gedoen om goeie tekkies te skenk. Die probleem is toe dat dié tekkies te groot was vir die laerskool meisies se nommer 2 tot 4-voetjies. ‘n Plaaslike kerk se uitreikspan het ingespring en 20 paar kleiner tekkies gekoop en aan die o.18-netbalspelers van die hoërskool gegee om aan die laerskool netbalspelers te oorhandig. Die groter tekkies gaan nou vir ‘n ander plaaslike skool geskenk word waar die nood net so groot is. Die Despatch gemeenskap wat meegehelp het om al die netbalspelervoete van tekkies te voorsien word bedank vir hulle goedhartigheid. Despatch se netbalspelers, van laerskool tot op klubvlak, speel opwindende netbal en dié tekkie-skenkings kan die sport net na nog ’n hoër vlak neem. Bike race to support learners from the Sundays River Valley T

he PwC Great Zuurberg Trek mountain bike race has once again nominated the Sundays River Citrus Company Foundation Trust as one of its beneficiaries for this year’s event. “The partnership would go a long way in helping develop education in the Sundays River Valley as well as raise awareness about the area,” said Det Bakker, liaison officer for the SRCC Foundation Trust. He explained that the foundation, founded to help those in the area, acted as the social development leg of the Sundays River Citrus Company. Bakker said proceeds from the event would go towards a number of education based projects. “The funds will help us finance bursaries which we can then offer to learners from the Valley. We want to give them opportunities they would otherwise never have had. “The other initiative we hope to grow is the

transport system for pupils. We are trying to get a school bus system off the ground. It is through the help and generosity of organisations that we will hopefully be able to make all of this a success,” Bakker said. Kirkwood High School, Sundays River Primary School and Hermitage House are a few of the schools supported by the foundation, with learners and teachers, along with local residents, offering support at the event. The race passes through the Sundays River Valley and it provides insight to people visiting from across the country about what is happening in the area. )The PwC Great Zuurberg Trek will take place from May 26 to 28. What is different from the Swiftresponse Street Soccer Classic (Friendship) tournament is that it is not teams that were invited

to enter, but individuals. And there is no entry fee. “Absa came on board, sponsoring the trophies and medals. We are very proud of their involvement as the purpose of the tournament is to build friendships, to unite and together enjoy the beautiful game of soccer,” said Ade Adekunle from Swiftsresponse Street Soccer Classic.
