etcare Cuyler Hospital in Uitenhage has for the third consecutive year received the highly sought-after Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) accreditation following the recent, annual reassessment of the hospital. The BFHI is a joint initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) and The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The accreditation programme aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding and quality infant care within hospitals across the globe. It also seeks to recognise and encourage medical facilities that have demonstrated excellence within their maternity units. “The strategy for BFHI implementation in South Africa states that reassessments must be conducted every year in order to determine whether the accredited hospital and its staff members continue to adhere to the criteria of the initiative,” explains Victor Mutle, general manager of Netcare Cuyler Hospital. “If there are any areas of non-compliance, the accreditation may be revoked. However, if BFHI standards are upheld, the hospital retains its accreditation.” Becoming a BFHI accredited facility in 2015 was a significant development for Netcare Cuyler Hospital. “Retaining the accreditation for 3 years since then is a marvellous reflection of our staff and management’s passion for quality mother and baby care,” said Mutle. “It is a great honour to be counted among those facilities that continue to meet the criteria and the hospital staff and management were overjoyed upon receiving the news,” he added. Sought after accreditation to hospital The gruelling Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) accreditation process compels medical facilities to examine, challenge and modify policies and procedures where required, in order to improve maternity care. Netcare Cuyler Hospital in Uitenhage has for the third consecutive year, received this highly sought-after accreditation. Considerable emphasis is placed on skills development as well as the development and implementation of special auditing processes to measure the quality of maternity care.

First breastmilk bank As the first hospital in the Eastern Cape to establish a breastmilk bank – whereby donated breastmilk is distributed to premature babies whose mothers are unable to breastfeed – Netcare Cuyler Hospital’s innovative mindset clearly resonates with the BFHI’s ethos towards breastfeeding and infant care. This is evident in the perfect score that the hospital received during the most recent BFHI assessment of their breastfeeding procedures and policies.

Jacques du Plessis, managing director of Netcare’s hospital division, thanked and congratulated the staff members and management at the hospital, stating that the BFHI re-accreditation bears testament to their hard work, care and quality service. “We salute you for going the extra mile in living the Netcare values,” he said. Looking to the future, Mutle says that the BFHI accreditation will continue to have a positive, long-term impact on the quality of care the hospital provides to the local com-

munity, as there is commitment to retaining the BFHI accreditation, which means that the hospital has to continue improving and developing its facilities and the staff members’ skills. “We have no intention of slowing down now, as all of us here at the hospital are passionate about quality healthcare. Our promise to our patients and their loved ones is that we will always strive to improve our service and care not only to our maternity patients but also to all our other patients,” says Mutle.

Mayoral charity golf day to boost education N elson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Councillor Athol Trollip has officially acknowledged recipients of the Mayoral Charity Golf Day during a hand-over event which was held at Teletubbies Day Care Centre in Despatch. The Mark Headbush Foundation hosted the annual Mayoral Charity Golf Day, of which the aim is to raise funds for the benefit of education for underprivileged communities. A total of R256 000 was raised, thanks to the

generosity of the business sector and donated to the following beneficiaries: Amanzi Farm School (Uitenhage region), Teletubbies Creche in Despatch, Colchester Primary School, Elundini Primary School, Mother Cummings Daycare, Vigilante Daycare and Metro Organisation for the Disabled. “The primary aim is to donate these funds towards sustainable infrastructure and facilities that will improve quality of education” says Headbush Foundation, Mark Headbush.

is nogal iets om oog tot oog met ’n dorpslegende te staan. Maar Ben se blik bly behoedsaam. Sy vertroue is nie iets om te gee nie, dis iets om te wen.

Dis nou nie heeltemal hoe Sanet Welgemoed die psige van Ben, Uitenhage se geliefde swerwershond, beskryf nie, maar dis hoe ek haar verduideliking verstaan het terwyl die pragtige dier my fyn staan en dophou. Voor dit het ons maklik ’n driekwartuur na Ben op sy tradisionele looproete deur Uitenhage gesoek. Die rede dié keer is omdat hy dolverlief is. Dis glo nogal iets om die twee verliefde vierpotiges saam te sien. Eerste stop is by die Engen-vulstasie in Fairbridge Heights waar Ben vyf jaar gelede vir die eerste daar opgedaag en dit later een van sy hoof-hawens op sy byna 10km looproete deur Uitenhage gemaak het. Op ‘n dag het hy Ounooi saamgebring en die tweetjies was baie gelukkig saam, maar toe ry iemand per ongeluk oor Ounooi waarna Ben jare lank die alleenpad geloop het. So asof hy geweet het hoe ‘n liefdespad doringpad kan word as jy die verkeerde keuse maak… buitendien het hy al genoeg mensevriende op sy looproete deur Uitenhage gemaak. En toe amper ‘n jaar terug, loop Ben die liefde op sy looproete raak. Haar naam is Meisie, ’n woeilige jongetjie wat naby ’n dokter se spreekkamers bly. Nie lank nie, toe gaan kuier sy saam met Ben by al sy vasgestelde plekke. Hier vir ontwerpershondekos, daar vir melk, hier vir pasteie, en so gaan dit aan. Maar so asof dit ’n skandelike affair was, het almal geswyg oor dié ou bok en sy jong woelige blaartjie. Maar die werklike rede was dat Meisie, nes Ben, eers gesteriliseer moes word. “Jy kan honde, wat die pad met al sy gevare

En dít is hoekom ons, toe ons die liefdespaartjie gaan opsoek het, net vir Meisie by The Vet Shop in Penford gekry het. Ben het op sy bekende dorps-roete geloop. Ons het hom oral op sy roete gesoek en oplaas gekry waar hy weer oppad terug was na sy en Meisie se koningsgrootte liefdesnes. Farewell to Riebeek’s 80 ‘young ladies’ W

ith the theme “The Final Toast” 80 matrics from Riebeek College Girls’ High School dazzled in their stunning outfits attended their matric farewell in the school hall. Principal of Riebeek College, Kieran Stear, said: “We pride ourselves on grooming our learners from Grade 4 to become valued members of their community with an appropriate knowledge of the correct register for an event, an empathy for others, an ability to communicate well and stand proud in a crowd. The young ladies of the Class of 2017 were amazing at their matric farewell and I am so proud of them.” Ambesa Daniels, head girl of 2017, said the following during her matric farewell speech at the event: “Being female is a matter of birth and being a woman is a matter of age, but being a lady is a matter of choice. “I look around and I no longer see the girls that I see each day. The purpose of tonight is to celebrate our growth.” “Our parents planted the seeds of hope, ambition, dreams in us from when we were tiny seedlings. They then planted us in the Riebeek soil in 2009. “Just like all plants, in order to thrive, we needed special care. Our teachers fertilized, watered and pruned us through education and discipline. “Tonight you are looking at this year’s garden of flowers and hope you are satisfied with what has bloomed,” said Daniels.

U’hage Lion now a member in USA K

eith Niewoudt has been a Lions member since 1978 and recently bade good bye to Uitenhage and relocated to the USA where he has joined the Lions Club in Portland. At first, whilst still in his younger days, he joined the Leos Club before becoming a member of the then George Lions Club. Niewoudt subsequently relocated to Uitenhage and has been with the Uitenhage Lions Club for more than 34 years. “Lions is about what you can give of yourself so that others can benefit,” said Lion Keith Niewoudt before his departure to the United States of America. “This is the end goal and along the way you have a wonderful time making friends with likeminded people who have the same passion for helping those less fortunate than ourselves. This ultimately makes you feel good within yourself.” Niewoudt said one must learn from one’s mistakes, own up to responsibility and perform at one’s very best for those one serves in one’s community. “This is very much in line with taking responsibility for a project that is close to your heart. A rule nisi shall hereby issue calling upon the Respondents to show cause, if any, on THURSDAY, the 17th of AUGUST 2017 at 09:30, or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard, why an Order in the following terms should not be granted: 2.1 That the First to Twenty Second Respondents, and/or any other persons acting for or on behalf of the First to Twenty Second Respondents, and any other persons instructing the First to Twenty Second Respondents, be interdicted and restrained from: (a) Interfering with in any way whatsoever with the construction activities, and/or with the administration and/or business of the Applicants at the First Applicant's premises situated at 176 Market Street, Uitenhage and the intersection between Daniël Pienaar Road and the R75, Uitenhage and/or any other place within the Municipalities of Uitenhage and/or Port Elizabeth, where the Applicants' employees render construction services on the dual carriage way between Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth on the National Route R75, and on Route 336 from Kirkwood to the R75 (“the project”); (b) Intimidating and/or threatening and/or harassing and/or causing violence and/or threatening to cause violence to any worker and/or employee and/or official and/or supplier and/or sub-contractor and/or employee of any supplier and/or sub-contractor of the Applicants working on or involved with the project; (c) Causing any damage and/or threatening to cause any damage to any property of the Applicants, any property or possession of any worker and/or employee and/or official and/or supplier and/or sub-contractor and/or employee of any supplier and/or sub-contractor of the Applicants; (d) Entering the site office and/or be within an area of 200 meters from the site office of the Applicants situated at 176 Market Street, Uitenhage; (e) Entering the site office of the First Applicant, which serves as an equipment storage facility, situated at the intersection between Daniël Pienaar Road and the R75, Uitenhage; (f) Protesting and/or demonstrating, within 200 meters from the said site offices or any of the construction sites occupied by the Applicants on the project; (g) Being unlawfully on any of the sites occupied by the Applicants on the project; (h) Disrupting and/or in any way being a disruptive presence at or near the site office of the Applicants and/or any site occupied by the Applicants and/or any road giving access to any site office or site of the Applicants; 2.2 That, in the event of a breach of this Order by any of the First to Twenty Second Respondents, the Twenty Third Respondent and/or any members of the South African Police Service shall forthwith be authorised and directed to take whatever steps necessary to enforce strict compliance with this Order; 2.3 That the Nineteenth Respondent is, in any event, directed to comply with its constitutional obligations to take whatever steps may be necessary to secure a safe environment for the Applicants to comply with their obligations in terms of SANRAL Contract NRA R. 075 – 010 – 2016/2S; 2.4 That the First to Twenty First Respondents be ordered to pay the cost of this application jointly and severally, the one paying the other to be absolved; 3. Paragraphs 2.1 (a) to (h), 2.2 and 2.3 above shall operate as an interim interdict/mandamus, pending the finalisation of the application; 4. Service of this Order shall be effected: 4.1 At the offices of the First Respondent, situate at 26 Bird Street, Central, Port Elizabeth; 4.2 By sending a copy of the Order to the e-mail addresses of the respective Respondents, where such e-mail addresses are available; 4.3 By publication of the Order forthwith in The Herald and in the UD News newspapers; 4.4 By directing the Sheriff to explain the contents of this Order once to any of the Respondents who are at present gathered at the site offices of the First Applicant at 176 Market Street, Uitenhage; 4.5 By affixing a copy of this Order on the front door, display window, or front gate of each of the Applicants' Uitenhage business premises and/or site offices; 5. Motorklub maak harte oop vir diere na brand Die East Cape Street Rod & Custom Car Club het onlangs ’n tjek ter waarde van R7 000 aan die Uitenhage & Distrik Dierebeskermingsvereniging oorhandig. “Die onlangse brande het baie weiding verwoes en baie troeteldiere het hul tuistes verloor. Met ons skenking wil ons die Uitenhage dierebeskermingsvereniging (DBV) help om kos te koop vir dié diere en om hul te versorg,” het Stephen Bothma, voorsitter van die motorklub gesê. Hy het die tjek aan Christelle Erasmus, vise-voorsitter van die Uitenhage DBV oorhandig. Dit is die missie van die klub en sy lede om fondse in te samel deur hul prag outydse motors te vertoon by spesiale geleenthede, asook om worsbroodjieverkopings te hou. Die fondse word aangewend om nie-winsgewende organisasies te help befonds. “Dit was vir ons ‘n groot voorreg om die Uitenhage DBV te ondersteun in die goeie werk wat hulle verrig vir die gemeenskap,” het Bothma gesê.

Hometown racing for Engen Xtreme team I

ntimate knowledge of the Aldo Scribante Raceway will stand the Engen Xtreme Team in good stead as the Sasol GTC Africa heads to the Bay for round five of the 2017 championship on Saturday, July 15th. Engen Xtreme Team drivers Michael Stephen and Simon Moss currently lie 2nd and 3rd respectively in the race for championship honours. The duo will be hoping a strong showing on their “home” track will help close the gap on leader Gennaro Bonafede. “The home event is a highlight on the national calendar for the Engen Xtreme Team,” says Terry Moss, team principal of Terry Moss Racing.

Program Qualifying races are from 08:00 to 10:00. It starts in the following order: AMSC Club Motorcycles, AMSC Regional Modified Saloons, Formula 1600, Red Square Kawasaki ZX10 Masters Cup, ENGEN Volkswagen Cup, Super Pole ENGEN Volkswagen Cup, GTC. Race 1 starts at 10:15 with the AMSC Club Motorcycles followed by the AMSC Regional Modified Saloons (10:45), Red Square Kawasaki ZX10 Master Cup (11:15), Formula 1600 (11:45), ENGEN VW Cup (12:15). Race 2 starts at 13:15 with the GTC followed by Red Square Kawasaki ZX10 Masters Cup (13:45), Formula 1600 (14:15), ENGEN Volkswagen Cup (14:45), GTC (15:15), AMSC Club Motorcycles (15:45), AMSC Regional Modified Saloons (16:15).

Most of their passionate fans come out for this race day – the only opportunity in the season they have to see the national racing locally.” Defending Sasol GTC Africa champion Stephen has bounced back from a challenging start to the season. He takes his Engen Xtreme Audi A3 to Scribante fresh from overall victory at Zwartkops and as winner of four of the last five races. The Engen Xtreme Team will face a challenging yet exciting race day as they navigate the narrow circuit. Cheered on by their hometown fans, Stephen and Moss will be looking to make a real

statement of intent as the Sasol GTC Africa hits the business end of the season.
