Top matriculant wins scholarship HEILIE COMBRINCK
M
icaela White, a 2014 Riebeek College Girls’ High School matriculant was announced as the top student of all the schools in the Department of Education’s Uitenhage District. She attended the Department of Education Premier Award Ceremony in East London on January 6th, in recognition of excellent results attained in the matric examinations and was awarded a scholarship of R80 000 per annum to
complete her studies. Micaela attained 7 distinctions, 6 of which were above 90%. Marilyn Woods, principal of Riebeek College Girls’ High School said, “We are so proud of our class of 2014. We wish them well in their future endeavours and trust that they will live by the values instilled in them at Riebeek. May they walk in integrity.” Micaela said that she was “lost for words”. She is blessed with a great spirit of gratitude and remains her humble self in this special moment of achievement and
accomplishment. She will be studying medicine at the University of Cape Town. “I hope to enter UCT’s special research track and enter into neurophysiology research. As for specialising as I’ve got my sights set on neurology. “Thank you for all the support everybody! You have made this even sweeter. Welpies se oorlewing ’n ‘wonderwerk’ ALVENÉ DU PLESSIS ADDO. – Uitgeteer en honger, maar met ’n hengse veggees het drie Oos-Kaapse weesleeuwelpies wonder bo wonder oorleef. Die drie ses maande oue welpies van die Addo-olifant Nasionale Park is Saterdag uiteindelik gevind nadat hulle bykans agt weke vermis was en mense vermoed het dat hulle gevrek het. Hoewel besoekers telkens beweer het dat hulle in die vakansietyd dié wolgesiggies deur takke in die park gesien loer het, het veldwagters sowat ’n week gelede die soektog na hulle afgelas. Hul ma, Gina, is vroeg in Desember dood. Jong welpies soos hierdie oorleef nie so lank op hul eie nie, het kenners gesê. Maar Saterdag omstreeks 17:00 is dié kleingoed doodhonger langs ’n pad in die park raakgesien. “Ek kan steeds nie glo dat hulle leef nie. Ek het regtig gedink hulle is dood,” het John Adendorff, waarnemende bestuurder van die park, gister gesê. “Dis baie selde dat sulke jong welpies alleen in die natuur oorleef. Hulle kon tog nie jag nie, dus het hulle seker van ander jagdiere se oorskietkos geleef.”
Veldwagters het die welpies glo naby ’n erosiegebied in die park raakgesien. Adendorff en sy span het dadelik gaan kyk en kon hul oë nie glo nie. “Ons het hulle toe met ’n karkas gelok,” het hy verduidelik. “Hulle was so honger dat hulle dadelik gekom het en nie een keer van hul kos opgekyk het nie. “Een van die wyfies het ’n abses aan haar voet en haar boetie en sussie is ook baie swak, maar ek dink hulle sal oorleef. “Ons veeartse het al die nodige gedoen en hulle is onder goeie sorg. Ons gaan hulle vir minstens ses maande in die boma hou voor ons hulle vrylaat.” Voor Saterdag is die welpies op 20 Desember laas gesien. “Dis niks anders as ’n wonderwerk nie. Hulle is regte vegters en ons glo dat hulle sommer gou-gou weer sterk en gesond sal word. “Hul ma, Gina, sou trots wees,” het Adendorff gesê. ;Die Addoolifant Nasionale Park se vermiste weesleeuwelpies is Saterdagmiddag gevind nadat hulle agt weke weg was. The South African National Road Agency Limited (SANRAL) the parastatal responsible for the management, maintenance and development of South Africa’s national road network, announced that it has closed the onramp between the R75 and R367. In a statement issued by SANRAL it is said that the on-ramp is closed as a result of construction required to stabilise the slope next to the on-ramp. An alternative temporary on-ramp has
been made for motorists exiting Uitenhage for Graaff-Reinet via the R75 or Union Avenue. Motorists will be required to follow temporary road signs and make use of the alternative on-ramp. SANRAL hopes that maintenance and upgrades to the existing on-ramp will be completed in August 2015. )Motorists are encouraged to adhere to rules of the road and drive carefully.

Eighteen learners achieved a total of 29 distinctions (versus 15 learners of the previous year). Top of the list was SAIPA’s top Accounting girl Sumaiya Moses who achieved 5 distinctions. She attained distinctions in Accounting, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Science. Walid Hassen scored 4 A’s. His 95% in Accounting was the highest for any subject in the school, whilst he also scored well in Mathematics (92%), Physical Science and Life Orientation. Ighsaan Salie achieved distinctions in CAT, Life Sciences and Mathematics. “The year 2014 really was an exceptional year for Uitenhage High School. The matric results came as no surprise as all the school’s stakeholders (parents, teachers and learners) worked very hard to make the school’s 50th year anniversary a most memorable one,” said Phillip Joseph, Uitenhage High School’s Spokesperson. he Lions Club of Uitenhage together with Lions Clubs across the globe participated in the Worldwide Week of Service from January 10 to 16, specifically to feed where there is need.
One of the service projects included a Feed the Hungry campaign specifically aimed at providing meals to needy children during the school holiday. “The Relieve the Hunger Global Service Action campaign involves the participation of the world’s largest service provider that consists of 1.35 million members. Presently the action campaign serves 25 million people and has set objectives to reach their goal of serving a 100 million people by 2017,” said Lion Denis Murphy from the Uitenhage Lions Club. Concerning the local community the Feed the Hungry campaign was aimed at providing meals to those who attend “no fee schools” as well as the homeless. To this effect the Uitenhage Lions Club and Alida Davis of the Underprivileged Children’s Ministry combined to organise a Feed the Hungry project which also involved donations received from local businesses. The project took place in John Street, Uitenhage and more than 500 underprivileged children and homeless were provided with meals.

St Colmcille matrics show improvement REPORTER St Colmcille Secondary School in Kirkwood is faced with various social challenges of poverty and abuse, but has made quality education their priority and focus. The school’s matriculants of 2014 have obtained a 81.4% pass rate, which is 21.9% increase over the 59.5% pass rate in 2013. According to Principal Ian Balie, the school has shown a massive improvement in its matric results over the last two years. “It has obtained a 81.4% pass rate in 2014, up from 59.5% in 2013. This was a real positive shift considering the pass rate was 36% in 2011 and 35% in 2012,” said Balie. “The
success should be attributed to dedicated staff and learners. The grade 12 parents also gave all the support as requested from the school. We congratulate the class of 2014 and wish them all the success for their future.” St Colmcille Secondary School took part in the District Matric Improvement Plan in the form of Winter and Spring school programmes and conducted its own weekend study camps, once a term. “We also had a week study camp, which took place a week prior to the commencement of the final exam. “All of these projects were financed by the school. This was done as our learners do not have conducive conditions at their homes,”
said Balie. Matriculants especially achieved success in the subjects of Accounting, English FAL, Life Science and Tourism. The school obtained a 100% pass in these subjects. Mathematical Literacy learners achieved a 92.5% pass rate. “The school will sustain its support programme for the class of 2015 and is confident of continued improvement in its quality of matric results,” said Balie. The school, which celebrated its 75th anniversary during 2014 and has a rich history of proud learners, would like to thank their circuit manager Ms. X. Selana for her positive encouragement and support throughout the year.

Swifts Rugby Club reunion and memorial service HEILIE COMBRINCK One of a kind. That is the former Swifts Rugby Club from Uitenhage, as it most probably is the only rugby club in South Africa which was founded by a reverend. In celebration of the club’s rich history a memorial service and reunion will be held in Uitenhage on February 1st. The club’s history dates back to 1890 when Reverend Charles Bloomer Jecks of St Katharine Anglican Church in Uitenhage selected a team of youngsters from the church choir and entered them in the local junior rugby league. At first they were called the St Katherine’s Choir rugby team, but during 1891 the Swifts Rugby Football Club was established. By 1894 they joined the Eastern Province Rugby Union and during 1896 delivered its first Springbok player, F.R. Myburgh. During 1906 all five teams of Swifts were top on their respective leagues in the Grand Challenge finals. According to Cecil Hayward, convenor of the Swifts memo-
rial service and reunion, there are still several former Swifts club members in the Uitenhage, Jeffreys Bay and Port Elizabeth areas. “Last year’s memorial service at St Katherine’s Church was packed. It was a joyous occasion as some of the members have not seen one another in years,” said Hayward. “The bring-and-braai afterwards, held at the Uitenhage Cricket Club has through the sharing of good old memories bring many a sparkle in the eyes of Swifts rugby players.” )The annual Swifts Rugby Club memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 1st at 11:00, St Katharines Anglican Church in Market Street, Uitenhage. Afterwards there will be a gathering for tea at the parish hall. Following these proceedings, fires will be lid at the Uitenhage Cricket Club (opposite Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre) for a bring-and-braai and reunion. All interested are most welcome to attend the memorial service (St Katharines Anglican Church) and reunion (Uitenhage Cricket Club).

U’hage klawerjas best in country HEILIE COMBRINCK

he Uitenhage Klawerjas Union (UKU) officially is the strongest union in South Africa after being announced the South African Klawerjas Board of Control’s Crown champions for the past three years. “At the beginning, 21 years ago, the big guns like Mitchells Plain Klawerjas and other Western Cape clubs reckoned us to be a walk-over. They were wrong,” said Patrick Baartman, Uitenhage Klawerjas Union’s Match & Recording Secretary. “Since we established the Uitenhage Klawerjas Union during 1994, we have grown from strength to strength and are proud to now be the strongest union of the South African Klawerjas Board of Control.” During the earlier years, the Klawerjas players of Uitenhage and surrounding areas for 12 years played under the banner of the Eastern Province Klawerjas Union.
“During 1994 ‘Oom’ Lawrence Joseph decided to establish the Uitenhage Klawerjas Union. Therefore this year we will celebrate the union’s 21 year anniversary in style.” UKU’s annual presentation of trophies was held during December at the VWSA PeoplePavilion with the inspirational guest speaker Aubrey Hermanus, taking the audience on a trip down klawerjas memory lane. The UKU top teams are Jetta Kings Klawerjas Club and Polo Cats Klawerjas Club who received most of the trophies. Players Colin White and Enrico Forbes of Kings K.C. respectively received the Sportsperson of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards. UKU has the honour later this year to be the host of the annual SAKBOC national klawerjas tournament which will be held during May 2015. )People interested in joining the strong local klawerjas fraternity are most welcome to contact Patrick Baartman on 076 337 6551.

MONIQUE BASSON IS jy chicken genoeg vir ’n resies van ’n leeftyd? Besit jy ’n motor, bakkie of bussie wat se wiele vir meer as drie dekades aan die rol is en waarvan die waarde minder as R20 000 is? As jou antwoorde op dié vrae “ja” is dan is die heel eerste Kouga Chicken Run waarskynlik net die avontuur vir jou. Pak jou moed en lewenslus in die bagasiebak, laat jou motor se enjin brul en vat die pad na die plaas Zuurbron buite Jeffreysbaai vir dié wedren. “Net soos in Top Gear, moet Chicken Run deelnemers die vaardighede van hulle voertuie op die proef stel,” sê mede-organiseerder Kobus Oosthuizen. “Slegs voertuie ouer as 30 jaar en waarvan die prysetiket R20 000 of minder is, kwalifiseer vir dié wedren. Die beperkings op die modeljaar en prys verseker ’n gelyke speelveld vir deelnemende petrolkoppe.” Punte word toegeken op grond van die afstand wat afgelê is, die tema van die voertuig en span, die beste spangees, prestasie tydens die hindernisbaan, die drag race, concourse de elegance, zefste span en kleinste enjin. Registrasie is op 16 April by Zuurbron met die eerste uitdaging op Vrydag, 17 April. Tydens ’n berekende afstandtydren moet deelnemers bepaal hoe vinnig of stadig hulle moet ry om ’n bepaalde afstand te voltooi.
Die inskrywings is beperk tot slegs 100 voertuie. Volgens Oosthuizen is daar reeds inskrywings van motor-entoesiaste ontvang vanuit Pretoria en Kimberley. Motors wat reeds ingeskryf is vir die Chicken Run sluit onder andere Oosthuizen se 1981 Ford Cortina in sowel as motors van die handelsmerke Mercedes Benz, Ford Galaxy, Chev Impala en Peugeot. Die koste per bestuurder is R1 500 en sluit die inskrywingsfooi en kampeerplek in. Passasiers betaal R500 per persoon (inskrywingsfooi en kampeerplek). Ete-kaartjies vir die naweek kan teen R350 per persoon gekoop word. Daar is groot pryse is op die spel. Toeskouers is welkom om die Saterdag se aksie te aanskou. Verversings en etes sal te koop wees.
