Golf day to support Valley’s animal project HEILIE COMBRINCK

olfers are invited to picturesque Kirkwood for participation in the annual Sundays River Valley Community Veterinary Clinic golf day in aid of animals in need in the Valley. Private veterinarians have established community veterinary clinics across the country in an attempt in providing disadvantaged communities with subsidised veterinary services. “Veterinarians donate their professional time to bring veterinary services to communities. Their vision is to provide primary health care to animals from these areas, thus promoting health and welfare of animals and people,” said Jeanette Pretorius from the Valley Animal Friends. The Sundays River Valley CVC has been running for a number of years, building a relationship with pet owners and providing a monthly sterilization clinic to assist in controlling the ever expanding pet population. “Dr Mulder and his staff from Uitenhage Animal Clinic are part of the CVC. “They together with Valley Animal Friend and Valley Pharmacy have joined hands in support of animals in need within communities of the Sundays River Valley.” Valley Animal Friends is a non-profit organisation that has at heart the assistance of animals in need and assistance with sterilization and medication. The golf day is hosted by Valley Animal Friends in conjunction with Uitenhage Animal Clinic as a fundraising project in support of Sundays River Valley CVC. )For more information contact Jeanette Pretorius at 0082 899 7134.

At the latest Strictly Street car audio event held at Scribante Race Track, Xplosive Car Audio members won the Open Class and took third place in the category. In the Hatchback category they took the first three positions whilst in the Sedan category one of the members came second. “The competitors have a decibel measure place on the widescreen which is connected to a laptop. We are given a track we have to play in 30 seconds and an average decibel reading is then given. The highest reading wins!” explained Layton. Leon Panagis had to add four extra car batteries in his VW Caddy in providing adequate power to the sound equipment he installed in his vehicle! “We are working and experimenting with car audio equipment with the aim to have the loudest car in the Nelson Mandela Metro,” said Layton. According to Panagis, preparation work on a vehicle is of utmost importance and it takes months to have all in place. “You have to strengthen the bodywork of the vehicle. Cables are very important and we only use 100% copper cables to get the best performance. There are no short-cuts. Everything has to be perfect,” said Panagis. The team has recently finished the sound system of a Corsa bakkie which apparently is “mind blowing”. “Getting the right sound out of a bakkie is very difficult as there is restricted space for reverberation. This means the collection of reflected sounds from the surfaces in the bakkie’s enclosed area has to be planned precisely to get the ultimate sound quality,” said Panagis. Course to sharpen business skills Women In Business have given their full support to a new course for entrepreneurs in the Uitenhage and surrounding areas. The aim of the course is to support the growth of small businesses and provide information, advice and networking links through training and development. “This qualification is available for potential new and existing entrepreneurs to capitalize, start and grow sustainable businesses that form part of the mainstream economy,” said Lilly de Jong from Women In Business. Some of the aspects that will be focused on include financial management, identifying

business activities, calculating cost and pricing of products/services and to determine the liability of a new venture. “The course will also focus on aspects enabling entrepreneurs to tender for business opportunities within both the public and private sector.” The study will be part-time two nights per week on Wednesday and Thursday for the duration of eight months. Night relay challenge is on! L

ocal companies and social teams are expected to take up the challenge of the Investec Night Relay which starts tonight at NelsonMandela Bay Stadium. It consists of four races on a monthly basis between tonight and Thursday, 14th August. Hosted by the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, the Investec Night Relay is a popular corporate relay event for teams of 5 runners or 3 walkers with each team member completing a 5km lap around the stadium and lake precinct. “It is not only a fun corporate team building opportunity but also a challenge on urban renewal in our city and an opportunity for companies to play a role in supporting local charities,” said Cumesh Moodliar, the Regional Head of the Specialist Bank. This year the Investec Night Relay will be supporting the ACVV Kamvalethu Drop-in Centre, the only drop-in centre for street children in Port Elizabeth situated near the Stadium precinct.

Bright clothes, glow in the dark or trail run lights are encouraged to add to the atmosphere of the event as the Night Relay enters its 4th year having been started through an initiative of the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) to highlight urban renewal in the Sydenham area around the Stadium. Entry into the Investec Night Relay is R500 for a 5-person running team or R300 for a 3person walking team with a 25% discount be-

ing offered to companies who wish to pay for all 4 race nights up front. Collection of race kit takes place at the World of Windows VIP Lounge at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium from 16:30 and the race gets underway at 18:00 followed by prize giving at 20:30. Floating trophies and winners’ medals are presented to the best men’s, ladies’ and mixed running teams and the best walking team on the evening. Uitenhage’s Gamble Pharmacy is the reigning men’s relay team champion. Over 100 teams are expected to take part tonight.
