The festive season is synonymous with blood shortages and the South African National Blood Service is appealing to the public to add blood

donation to their to-do list, before going on holiday. “Every year, the blood service has to impose cut-backs during the festive season, which essentially means that fewer units are issued than requested by doctors. This is necessary in order to preserve blood stocks during this challenging time and to have enough blood to treat patients during emergency situations,” said Maryke Harris, Public Relations Practitioner SANBS, Port Elizabeth Branch. There are so many people for whom blood donations are a life-

line. One such person is 13 year old Uitenhage resident and Grey College scholar, DC Porter, who has hemophilia which means he bleeds seven times longer than any other person. “On the lower scale, I twist my ankle and I get a massive hematoma and have pain walking. “On the upper scale I fall on my head, get a brain bleed and could be paralysed or die” said DC Porter during a recently held SANBS media function. “Luckily, there is a very effective treatment. I can get an intravenous

injection of Factor VIII. This is a blood by-product form pooled plasma derived from blood donations. It ensures that I can have a normal and adventure-filled life. “So, remember next time you donate blood - not only are you saving a life - you are giving people like me a life to live!” This is clear that someone is relying on your willingness to give of yourself, of your time, of your blood in order for them to celebrate another festive season or for some, just another day. According to Harris, South Afri-

The annual Uitenhage Street Carnival will be held from 30 November to 2 December and residents, motorists as well as business owners are to take note that several streets in the central business area will be closed during this period. The carnival is organised by the Rotary Club of Uitenhage in conjunction with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality. The streets that will be affected by the carnival will be Church Street, Caledon street, from Baird Street intersection through to Chase Street, Market Street

from Caledon down to Rich Street. These two streets will be reserved for stall vendors and the playland. No parking will be allowed in the affected areas of Caledon and Market Streets during the carnival. Lances Lane, Daly Street and a part of Caledon Street will be used as access routes for the emergency vehicles and as drop off for disabled persons. Parking permits to use during the Uitenhage Street Carnival will be issued on request by phoning the Rotary Hotline on 0081 054 6217.

Infrastruktuur lê Despatch lam MONIQUE BASSON DIE gebrek aan basiese dienslewering in Despatch en die gevolglike verval van die infrastrukstuur is soos ’n tikkende tydbom. Dit is die mening van menige inwoners wat ontevrede is met die toedrag van munisipale

Van die probleme wat gereeld in die dorp opduik sluit in teerstate wat verbrokkel, verouderde waterpype, stormwaterpype wat nie die kapasiteit water kan hanteer nie, rou riool in mangate, ondrinkbare kraanwater en huishoudings sonder water. Volgens Wyk 52 raadslid, Francois Greyling, is die hoofoorsaak van dié agteruitgang en wankelende infrastruktuur swak beplan-

ning en swak bestuur. “Die infrastruktuur rakende vars water, stormwater, riolering en paaie op Despatch is ’n tikkende tydbom,” het Greyling gesê. “Talle inwoners gaan gebuk onder waterprobleme en sommige se riool loop in nabyliggende spruite en in die rivier af. Wanneer swaar reënbuie uitsak is Hoofstraat, Bothastraat en van die systrate binne minute onder water.”

Greyling sê die dorp se waterpype en stormwaterstelsels is nie net verouderd nie, maar party is ook verstop en kan gevolglik nie groot volumes water hanteer nie. Volgens Greyling “behandel die munisipaliteit slegs die simptome van die agteruitgang en dat daar geen planne in plek is vir voorkomende instandhouding nie.” “Die pleidooie van die publiek val ongetwyfeld op dowe ore,” het Greyling gesê.

HELGA VAN STAADEN KIRKWOOD. – ’n Groep plaaswerkers van die Sondagsriviervallei pluk die vrugte van hul eie harde arbeid. Sowat 33 begunstigdes van die Sondagsrivier trust het verlede week die trotse eienaars van hul eie sitrusplaas geword. Hoewel daar nog nie ’n boom op die 117 ha-plaas geplant is nie, is die groep angstig om die grond te begin bewerk. Die Sondagsrivier Sitrusmaatskappy (SRCC) het in 2007 die Sondagsrivier-trust gestig, waarby 33 plaaswerkers die begunstigdes geword het van ’n sitrusboerdery op vier verskillende plase (Willow Tree, Siyat-

hemba, Glengrove en Eendragt) wat vir die begunstigdes van die departement van landelike ontwikkeling en grondhervorming gehuur word. Dit was deel van die regering se grondhervormingsplan. Ken Nieuwenhuizen, besturende direkteur by SRCC, het gesê hul ontwikkeling, bemagtiging en transformasie-agenda is in ooreenstemming met dié van die regering. Volgens hom is die SRCC se doelwit dat 30% van sy produsente uit ontluikende boere moet bestaan. Hulle staan tans op 10%. Die groep het sedert 2008 elke jaar van sy opbrengs gespaar omdat hulle ’n plaas van hul eie wou koop. Dit het onlangs met die hulp van die SRCC gebeur. Die begunstigdes het die

The Laetitia Bam Community Health Centre is the first health care facility buildt in KwaNobuhle to provide a 24 hour service to residents of the area. Its services has now been extended with a much needed X-ray unit. “The X-ray unit formed part of the original planning of the centre, but as a result of budget constraints this specialised service was not prioritised,” said Hospital Administrator Shaun Arries. Deputy Director for Clinical Support Service in the Nelson Mandela Bay Health District, Mrs M.D. Manuel, managed to procure funds to acquire the necessary X-ray equipment which were installed at Laetitia Bam and the unit opened its doors last week. “Previously, patients from KwaNobuhle

With the support of the District Manager, Tommy Oliver and Chief Radiographer at Uitenhage Provincial Hospital, Tracey Bareira, this much needed service finally is now in operation. According to Arries, surrounding clinics will now be able to refer patients to Laetitia Bam CHC with minimal costs incurred. SAn official opening of the X-ray unit will be held early in 2013.

Sebenza, a community based organisation, provides sewing workshops every Saturday for those less fortunate in the Eastern Cape. In doing so, they strive to alleviate poverty and aims for incumbents to become self sufficient citizens. Apart from developing skills Sebenza follows a holistic approach looking after the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of incumbents. The Chevrolet Uitenhage/Despatch Cricket Coaches Forum recently hosted two events which were well supported and its last coaching clinic for the year will be held next Tuesday. An informative meeting was held at Convent Primary school where coaching activities were discussed. Attendees John Dobson (Bergsig School) and Nolene Visser (Heatherbank CC) were the winners of cricket coaching books. The Forum in conjunction with Daniel Pienaar Technical High School and Jason Bowen from EP Cricket also hosted an enjoyable Coach Accelerated Program, which was presented by well known EP Cricket coaches Stuart Falconer and Johan le Roux at Daniel Pienaar THS. The practical coaching program known CAP for short was well supported and attracted 25 school and club coaches alike. The content included amongst others, fitness training, warm ups, speed, agility, quickness, batting and bowling drills, net

session management and basic field settings. On conclusion of the program, there was a quizz on the content of the course and the winners of fielding DVD and coaches forum packs were Saliem Daya, Rameer Kara (Union CC), Mkhululi Foute (Melumzi CC), John Dobson (Bergsig HS), Ntombi Thys, Mbuyi Magwentshu (Hombakazi PS), Percy Adolph (Gamble SSS), Mlungisi Matana (Ilinge PS). Landlord unmoved by tenant’s request

A reader who is renting a flat has approached the Property Poser panel about the possibility of moving into a vacant flat in that same block. Although she has not provided much background information, it appears that the flat adjacent to hers has become available and the reader would like first option on taking occupation. However, much to her annoyance, the reader’s landlord has made it clear that he will only rent the flat in question to a new tenant and that she should remain where she is. Without an agreement or undertaking to the contrary, the reader would not have a right to merely move from one unit to another within a block of flats, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in Nelson Mandela Bay. “Having lived in the building longer than a potentially new tenant would not automatically create such a right.” Vermaak says it is conceivable that such an option could have been created by way of agreement. “The reader’s current lease agreement may make provision for the option to move from her current unit to a different one when such

a unit becomes available.” Such a right may have been expressed as a right of first refusal, thus permitting her to remain in occupation of her current unit or to move if she wishes, says Vermaak. “Presumably there’s some attraction to the new unit that’s compelling our reader to consider the move.” If the reader does have an option, she should examine the provisions of her lease to determine whether she is obliged to enforce her right in a certain manner, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in the metro. If an option is not contained in the lease agreement, but rather in some other form of written undertaking, the reader’s remedy would be to enforce that undertaking, says Du Toit. “If the option was given as part of a verbal agreement, the situation becomes a little more difficult, especially in the absence of witnesses or supporting evidence.” Du Toit says, depending on the exact terms of the agreement, the reader would have to prove that any utterances formed an enforceable oral undertaking.
