Dié maatskappy het ’n “reuse-taak” wat voorlê, het Lawrence Polkinghorne, uitvoerende hoof van MTO, gesê. “Die rook het nou eers gaan lê, so ons moet nog die skade assesseer,” sê Polkinghorne. “Minstens 50% van die plantasie het afgebrand en die saagmeule ook. Dit is ’n verwoestende verlies, maar ons sal ons bes doen en met die massiewe herbou-proses begin.” Die eerste prioriteit was egter om te sorg dat die brande wat steeds plek-plek opvlam,
geblus word, het hy gesê. Volgens Van Lingen se verklaring was nagenoeg 120 brandbestryders, waarvan 50 ontplooi is deur die Sarah Baartman-distriksmunisipaliteit, Dinsdag in die gebied om nuwe brande te verhoed. “ ’n Versoek is ook deur die gesamentlike bedryfsentrum – wat bestaan uit verteenwoordigers van Kouga, die Nelson Mandelabaai-metro en die polisie – aan die nasionale weermag gerig, om helikopters te verskaf wat water kan stort op brande wat dalk in die streek opvlam.”

the Eastern and Southern Cape have already signed up for this year’s three winter school programmes in Port Elizabeth and George, which run from July 10 to 14. The deadline to register is June 19. The on-campus winter schools give pupils a taste of university life, by following the same academic model used by NMMU’s School of Accounting, where formal lectures are followed by smaller-group tutorials, run by BCom (Accounting) students. There are also motivational talks and mentoring by accounting professionals and past students – and talks on funding options for university. “The students not only receive academic aid … Many of these pupils come to the winter school simply hoping to pass matric, but they are inspired to dream and to make those dreams a reality,” said tutor Duane Rensburg, who is completing his postgraduate degree in Accounting,

This year’s winter schools will also feature the concept of “tutor shadows”, where first-year NMMU BCom students will shadow a tutor, who will be a second- to fourth-year student, to develop them to be effective tutors next year. “Being a tutor means that for that week, you will be a motivational speaker, a counsellor and even a psychologist … By shadowing, the new tutors will quickly develop these skills,” said Rensburg. One of the shadow tutors, first-year Carmel Chan-Lok, who attended the Grade 11 and 12 winter schools as a pupil, said the schools helped to boost her final exam results by 10 percentage points. This contributed towards her being awarded a prestige NMMU Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship – and gave her a

Demonstrations will take place on Friday, June 30 at 15:00. On Saturday, July 1 at 11:00 and 15:00 and on Sunday, July 2 at 11:00.

Sonop netbal op pad na nasionale kampioenskappe Sonop se o.13A netbalspelers is op pad na die Nasionale Netbalkampioenskappe in Boksburg waar hulle die Oos-Kaap se naam gaan hoog hou in hul kragmetings teen die ander top spanne van die land. Netbalorganiseerder van Laerskool Sonop en afrigter van die o.13A span, Desireé Brummer sê die span het ’n uitstekende netbalseisoen en het al die spanne in die Uitenhage/ Despatch-streek geklop, waarna hulle ook as die Metrokampioene gekroon is. Daarna het hulle aan die Oos-Kaapse Kampioenskappe in Oos-Londen deelgeneem waar hulle as die naaswenners gekroon is en gekwalifiseer het om aan nie nasionale kampioenskappe op 28 en 29 Julie deel te neem. “Dit is die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar dat die groep meisies hierdie fantastiese prestasie behaal. Die span het ook in 2016 die Oos-
Kaap by die nasionale netbalkampioenskappe verteenwoordig,” sê Brummer. Hiermee saam is daar egter baie finansiële uitdagings. Daarom word daar verskeie fonds-insamelingsprojekte gehou om dit vir die spelers moontlik te maak om by die nasionale kampioenskappe deel te neem. Op Woensdag, 28 Junie bied Panarottis op Despatch die span die kans om fondse in te samel, wanneer die netbalspelers as kelnerinne gaan werk en op Sondag, 2 Julie sal hul ‘n stalletjie beman by die Uitenhage Mark langs Willowdam. “Ons versoek die gemeenskap vriendelik om ons te ondersteun. Indien enige instansie ook bydraes wil lewer kan hul die skool kontak. Baie dankie vir bydraes wat ons reeds ontvang het,” sê Brummer. Die span se ander afrigters is Surika Pienaar en Chantelle van Rensburg.

Pretstap (mét honde) en fietsry by winterfees

Just be sure to label them. “Shelves fixed to the wall are probably the best place to store paint, pool chemicals and garden and DIY supplies, while racks and hooks will keep hoses, tools, ladders, weedeaters, leaf blowers and even bikes and lawn mowers tidy and out of the way. “Most garages are also quite high, so if you need still more space it is worth hoisting large, light items like surfboards, canoes and fishing gear up above the area where you should now be able to park the car with ease. Vehicle to win in SA’s fastest half marathon event The Nelson Mandela Bay Athletics South Africa 21.1km championships will set the pace in grand style on Saturday, June 24th with a racing prize purse and lucky draw prizes worth more than R645 000. The 21.1km route, credited as the fastest in South Africa, will start and finish at Pollock Beach in Summerstrand. With R500 000 for the elite field to compete for, Alan Taylor, race director said South Africa’s top athletes had already confirmed their participation. The 2016 men and women top ten finishers from both Kenya and Ethiopia will be defending their titles. “The NMB ASA 21.1km allows locals the opportunity to race against the best in the country and therefore develops running in the region,” said Taylor. The Eastern Cape Motor Group has sponsored a brand new Datsun Go vehicle prize valued at R106 900 as a superb incentive for participating runners. “The car is the highlight of our lucky draw competition which means you don’t have to win one of the races to win the car!” said Mike Mbambani, event director. He said the car draw would bring the prize-giving to an exciting conclusion after the 21.1km cut off at 11:30 on Saturday, June 24th. Win a car: 5km participants “Anyone who enters the 21.1km or 5km races will be eligible for the car prize, but you must be there to claim it,” said Mbambani. Five finalists will be drawn for a nailbiting finale to see who wins the car. Adidas will be sponsoring a R2 000 gift voucher for the 4 consolation prize winners. Sport equipment to schools The NMB ASA 21.1km championship event had incentivised school involvement with a generous prize of sport equipment to the value of R30 000 for the top five schools with the most bulk entries. The course record is currently held by 2016 male and female winners, Edwin Koech (1:01:16) and Sheila Chesang (1:10:58). The best South African performance for 2016 was recorded in Nelson Mandela Bay for each of the age categories, with the exception of the 60-69 men and 70+ women categories, reinforcing the pace of this exciting course. In ’n merkwaardige mylpaal het Brandwag se doelwagter, Dané Gerber, teen Framesby vir die honderdste keer Brandwag se eerste hokkiespan die doelhok opgepas. Dané, wat vanjaar in matriek is, speel al vanaf haar gr aad 10 vir die eerste span. Sy het in graad 8 vir die eerste keer begin hokkie speel by afrigter Anita Meyer en was nog altyd ’n doelwagter. Oor dié posisie het Dané gesê: “daar is gevra wie wil doelwagter speel en niemand wou nie, toe dink ek, wel dan gaan ek probeer!”

Vroeër vanjaar is Dané by die DF Malan hokkiekursus as die o.18 doelwagter van die toernooi aangewys. Alaric’s ‘love affair’ with swimming

op Madibaz swimmer Alaric Basson is immersing himself in more ways than one in his preparation for the Summer Universiade in Taipei, Taiwan, in August. The 21-year-old, who was named NMMU’s sportsman of the year in 2016, has been on a mission to improve his times in a sport where every split second counts. “I have been working on a number of aspects to get faster and to become more efficient in the pool,” said Basson, who notched up silver medals in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events at the national champs in Durban in April. “I have been focusing on my starts and turns and have been working on techniques to try and minimise drag. My coach and I have also been looking at ways to make my stroke more efficient.” The Uitenhage-based student said he had also been hitting the gym to work on his core strength ahead of the Summer Universiade, also known as the World Student Games. “Now that I’m done with my exams, I’m able to be more consistent with regard to my gym work as well as putting in more yards

‘Ride for the Youth’ launch of mountain bike trail The inaugural “Ride for the Youth” mountain bike trail will be launched tomorrow (Youth Day) at Baywest Mall. This family-oriented mountain bike ride marks the official launch of the new Baywest Mall MTB Trails and is presented in conjunction with Fat Tracks Mountain Bike Club, Old Mutual and Nutritech. Baywest Mall marketing manager Christopher Hutchings said the intention behind the event was to create a healthy and active way for families to spend quality time together. “As Nelson Mandela Bay’s premier shopping and entertainment destination, Baywest already has a great family-friendly offering. By taking it outdoors, we are simply expanding the variety of activities for moms, dads and kids to share.” Hutchings said the Baywest MTB Trails were designed to be scenic, accessible and enjoyable for social riders of all skill levels and technical abilities. “Of course, those family members who aren’t keen to break a sweat can still enjoy a
coffee, watch a movie or do some shopping while waiting for the rest to finish.” The family-friendly line-up includes a 1km kids’ dash, 6km and 12km social rides, and an 18km feature race. The trails start near the fountain outside the Fun Factory entertainment wing entrance (Entrance 4). Registration will take place outside the ice rink between 4pm and 6pm on Thursday, June 15, and from 7.30am to 8.30am on race day. The event draws to a close with the official prize-giving and lucky draws at noon. Our goal is not to beat each other, but to try and be the best we can be.” Beyond Taipei, the Madibaz star is eyeing the Olympics Games in Tokyo, Japan, in 2020. “It is the dream and the goal, but I have a lot more work to put in before then. It’s all about the improvement.”
