Dit gaan nie oor geld nie,” het Mlungwana Stokwe verduidelik. Bulelwa Jack glo die leerders sal harder werk as hulle sien die onderwysers doen dit. In 2012 was dié skool se slaagsyfer 29%. In 2013 het dit na 47,4% gestyg. Die mikpunt is om ’n matriekslaagsyfer van bo 50% op te lewer.

“Om só iets te bereik, moet ons die leerders bystaan,” het Mncedi Mtengwana, skoolhoof, gesê. “Die skool is in ’n arm gebied. Dus is toegang tot goeie inligtingsbronne en buitemuurse akademiese bystand beperk.” In dié matrieks se gr. 11-jaar is wiskunde, wetenskap en rekeningkunde reeds as die “probleemvakke” geïdentifiseer. Dít het Mtengwana finaal op ’n vroeër 2014-matriek ter wille van “voorsprong-klasse” laat besluit – ná ’n vergadering met die leerders, hul ouers en die onderwysers. Dit het ’n bietjie werk gekos om sommige ouers van die voordele hiervan te oortuig. Nonzaliseko Zekani, een van die gr. 12-leerders se ouers, erken sy was eers skepties. “Aanvanklik was ek nie seker nie, maar hoe meer ek daaroor gedink het, hoe meer het

ROTARY CLUB OF UITENHAGE: BURSARY
Bursaries for post matric qualifications The Rotary Club of Uitenhage wishes through the granting of bursaries to assist needy students, who reside in Uitenhage or Despatch, to obtain post matric qualifications at any recognised South African tertiary institution. Students who have obtained at least a C aggregate in their matric examination, or students who are at present studying at a tertiary institution may apply. Applicants are advised that additional financing may be necessary as the bursary from the Rotary Trust may not be sufficient to cover all fees for the year. Bursary application forms are available at the

Completed forms should be sent to: The Convener, Educational Aid Trust, 30 De Jong Drive, Uitenhage 6229; or it can be handed-in (in an envelope) at the UD News office before 14th February 2014. Abnormal loads to pass through Uitenhage The transport of wind turbine equipment from Coega Port to the Kouga Wind Farm site will be a massive logistic effort with abnormal loads which have to move through Uitenhage to Oyster Bay. “There needs to be clear and consistent communication to keep the affected communities of the towns informed regarding the movement of these abnormal loads,” said Erica Mogran, Marketing Manager of Redcap. A detailed road and route study has been conducted to cause the minimum traffic disruption whilst ensuring the loads arrive on site without any risk to lives or damange to equipment. The total estimated number
of loads is 265, which is approximately 10 loads per week. “In Uitenhage the high load vehicles will come via the R334 then turn on to the R75, taking the offramp to Union Avenue, left into Marconi Road, Algoa Road and then left into Cuyler Road,” said Mogan. The current plan is to start the transportation of the components the last week of January or first week in February. It will be scheduled weekdays during offpeak periods and last until mid July 2014. )The UD News will publish the transport information accordingly. Earthwork to commence at development
Blood needed
The proposed development at the prime Uitenhage property next to Union Avenue has many a resident dazzled as the advertising billboard indicates “opening March 2014”. The Keystone Group has acquired this property, which initially was the former South African Railways’ nursery supplying stations in the Eastern Cape with plants and trees, for the development of a planned Corkwood Square regional mall. It is planned to comprise lettable space of approximately 40 000m². On the Keystone Group’s website they indicate that “with this development the road network will be vastly improved with a road overpass over the railway line being constructed allowing free access in a north south direction between the two major traffic routes in the area.” On further investigation by the UD News regarding the commencing of the development, Nelinda Clements of Keystone Investments said, “We are starting earthwork in January.”

Rock the Hage music festival Music from the 60s and 70s will rock around the clock during a Rock the Hage Music Festival to be held on 28 and 29 March at Uitenhage Golf Club. Live bands such as Day Trippers, Dark Custard, Caravan, Poltergeist and Yet Again will take the stage and there will be various other artists with solo and duo acts. The festival is organised by Johan van Vuuren and fellow musicians with bands from the 60s and 70s which were well known in the area. Hijackers arrested Three suspected hijackers were arrested within minutes by members of the Despatch, Uitenhage and KwaNobuhle police, after holding a woman at gunpoint and taking her VW Polo. “The incident happened last Thursday evening when the complainant was held at gunpoint in Ndlambe Street, KwaNobuhle and demanded her car keys. The three hijackers made off in the direction of Port Elizabeth,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart. The complainant notified the KwaNobuhle police and
with the assistance of the 10111 centre various disciplines of the local police responded immediately. “A high speed chase ensued and members of the A-relief from SAPS Despatch, the Uitenhage Cluster Flying Squad and SAPS Kwanobuhle members arrested the three suspects in Greenfields,” said W/O Swart. All three suspects were detained until their court appearance last Monday in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on a charge of armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Two killed in accident on Rocklands road
Police looking for witness in rape case Detectives from the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Uitenhage are urgently looking for Bulelwa Buthelezi who was a witness in a rape case. She formerly resided in KwaNobuhle, but it is believed that Buthelezi is

Steering clear of flybynight colleges As the class of 2013 scramble to secure a space at universities and colleges, an education expert has warned prospective students to ensure they carefully scrutinise institutions before signing up. “Thousands of newly matriculated young people are being turned away at universities owing to space constraints. It is encouraging to see so many prospective students include private higher and further education institutions as they consider alternatives,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Independent Institute of Education (IIE). “It is therefore most regrettable that there are still some unscrupulous people exploiting
students’ difficult situation, for fraudulent and selfish financial gain.” The IIE is SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education institution, and Coughlan notes that private institutions are required to adhere to the same rigorous quality assurance processes as state universities. This means that if you register at the right private institution you are able to gain a qualification of equal standing and quality. “Most private institutions operating throughout the country are registered and accredited and almost all offer a viable alternative for students seeking a post-school study opportunity, but it is a travesty that the ac-

tions of some taint the whole sector. “There are a few key questions to ask to which there are some simple answers, and if an institution is able to respond appropriately, it is worth considering,” she says.

Cycling legend Martin Nefdt has reassembled his 1967 Springbok track team who were the world track championships in Amsterdam, plus a host of local celebrities to cycle in aid of the Uitenhage SPCA. Nefdt and his cohort will be “cycling for the love of animals” in The Herald VW Cycle Tour’s 55km pursuit road race on Sunday, February 2. The group of 30 sponsored riders will use the event as a fundraiser for Uitenhage SPCA, which serves the entire Nelson Mandela Bay area, including Kirkwood and Addo. “They’re battling with their vehicle and the state funding is pretty poor,” said Nefdt. The group hope to raise awareness and at least R15 000 for the non-profit organisation and will be highly visible on race day in their matching team shirts. Leading the bunch on a tandem will be Nefdt, 65, and seven-time South African sprint champion Willie Marx, 70. In their glory days, the former SA champions and rivals played to capacity crowds at the Westbourne Oval, breaking numerous individual records between them.

Nefdt and Marx were also the last Springbok pair to race the tandem event at the world track championships before South Africa was isolated from international competition. They will be joined by team-mates Johan Nicol, who was the first SA rider to break the five-minute barrier in the 4 000m pursuit, and former national sprint and road champion Jack Lester. Both are 66. The foursome competed at the 1967 world championships in Amsterdam but missed their chance to become Olympians when the country was banned from the Games in Mexico the following year. Joining them will be the likes of EP Rugby’s father-and-son pairing Cheeky and Luke Watson, EP Rugby CEO Charl Crous, ex-Bok Robbie Kempson and Algoa FM presenter Daron Mann. SPCA volunteer Marizanne Ferreira said everyone at the organisation was excited about the initiative. itenhage boxing phenomenon and currently South African ranked number one boxer in the heavyweight division, Unathi Jacobs, has fought in many boxing rings across the African continent and even abroad, but he prefers to make his local fans proud! Although being the Eastern Cape champion in the heavyweight division, the relatively light weighing Jacobs (91kg) will this year for the first time fight in the cruiserweight division. “I want to take up a new challenge. The other provincial competitors in the heavyweight division are Ivan Strydom and Sithembele August and I’ve knocked-out both of them,” said Jacobs. He now plans to fight the six times cruiserweight champion Danie Venter in an effort to claim the national title.
