hen “Rock the Hague” hit the sleepy town of Uitenhage a few weeks ago, the outcome was one of the most spectacular musical events to take place at the Uitenhage Golf Club ever. The Uitenhage police wish to advise residents to be aware of their surroundings when making use of an ATM at local shopping centres. “Most importantly, and this should by now be common knowledge, do not use an ATM if there is some kind of obstruction that causes difficulty to enter your bank card. “Secondly, do not accept assistance from a stranger. If you experience some kind of hassle rather go to your nearest bank,” said Adjudant Officer Gerda Swart, spokesperson of the Uitenhage police. Fraudsters will use any opportunity to commit crimes, from looking over your shoulder, to elaborating set ups such as installing a CCTV and skimmer on an ATM machine to steal information about your card. Stealing your card information will enable them potentially to create fake credit cards for fraudulent spending – all on your account. Here are three potentially

An independent judging panel consisting of four persons have had the final say after a tasting function hosted at the UD News

The Uitenhage Market team will be hosting a potjiekos competition at their next outdoor market at the Old Concentration Camp heritage site, off Verwoerd Drive, on May 4th. All interested above the age of 16 years or teams consisting of four participants are invited to enter. The entry fee is R100 per team. “Originality and diversity are two key aspects in this potjiekos competition,” said Lilly de Jong from Women In Business, the organisers of the Uitenhage Market.

Cyclists ‘tour of faith’ to Mighty Men Six cyclists are nearing the day to start their cycling tour from Despatch to Middelburg in attending the Karoo Mighty Men Conference. Dubbing this cycling tour Mighty Men Cycle by Faith, the group of men will cycle for a stretch of four days through Kirkwood, Jansenville, Graaff-Reinet and then to their final destination in Middelburg.

U’hage High 50th year ‘sports’ Over the weekend of 25th-27th April, Uitenhage High School will be celebrating a half a century in style. The school will host sports events and the carnival at the Rosedale Sports Fields. Action kicks off on Friday, 25th April with rugby and netball games when four local high schools tackle one another. Uitenhage High will first play against their neighbours Gamble Street, whilst McCarthy Comprehensive School will play against John Walton Senior Secondary School. Spandau Senior Secondary School from Graaff-Reinet will also on Friday show their Karoo flair, when they tackle Humansdorp. Rugby will continue on Saturday, 26th April with Mary Waters from Grahamstown and Bertram High School of PE joining the fray. All eight schools will be competing for the coveted trophy sponsored by Bold Moves Printing.
“Old Crock” matches will also be played on both the rugby and netball fields. Before the rugby, netball, soccer and volleyball matches on Saturday, there will be a 5km fun run, starting at the historical Uitenhage High School and ending at Rosedale Sports Fields. Former learners like Klaas Valent, Victor Nelson and Usapho April and others will show the current crop of learners that they have not lost their touch and can beat them over this distance. Other fun activities on Saturday, 26th April include drum majorettes, music band, float and rag procession and various stalls. Die toernooi is die afgelope vakansie na Walvisbaai aangebied deur Walvisbaai Privaat Hoërskool. Daniel Pienaar se Tiere het al hulle wedstryde gewen. fassinerend maak is dat jy byna elke dag iets nuuts leer en nooit moet dink jy weet alles van dié bedryf nie,” sê Nell. Wedvlugte word in die winter aangebied en plaaslike duiweboere kry hulle geveerdes reg vir die eerste langafstandwedvlug van die seisoen vanaf Middelburg, Kaap en dan die 800km vanaf Stella in die Noord-Kaap. Mini hockey coaching celebrates 20th year The changing of season usually also means the changing of sports and autumn in Uitenhage means mini hockey coaching time! Well-known in the hockey circles, Peter and Brenda Biljon this year will start with their mini hockey coaching on the 3rd May at the Uitenhage Hockey Club, across from the Indoor Sports Centre. The coaching will continue every Saturday morning until the end of June. “As a result of the great demand for mini hockey coaching, we unfortunately can only accommodate 120 children between the ages of 6 and 13 years,” said Peter Biljon. The coaching is open to boys as well as girls and will be great sporting fun. Mini hockey balls as well as coaches will be provided for each squad. All that is required is a R100 registration fee and that the children wear proper running shoes and they must have their own hockey sticks. Registration for the mini hockey coaching will be on Saturday, 26th April between 10:00 and 12:00. Late registration will also be done on the 3rd May from 08:30. olkswagen Group South Africa’s world class sporting facility, the PeoplePavilion, hosted a Sports Expo for its employees and families last Saturday. The R30-million PeoplePavilion is a sport, recreational, rehabilitation and community facility. It operates 15 hours a day for the benefit of all Volkswagen employees and their families. In its quest to promote employee engagement and a healthier lifestyle, Volkswagen Group South Africa invited its employees to interact with various internal sporting clubs and to rub shoulders with top local sports personalities. Rotary charitable golf day The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South, supported by its title sponsors Afri-Mart Supermarkets, is once again hosting its popular golf day to raise funds for charities in town. “Valued contributions enabled our club to support a number of local charities last year in keeping with our objective of assisting the poor, needy and less fortunate than ourselves in our community,” said Rotarian Shaun Gilbert from the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. “Charities that benefited last year included an old age home, feeding scheme, rape crisis centre, Uitenhage Provincial Hospital and a learning centre in addition to our annual support for the world wide End Polio campaign.” The 2014 Afri-Mart Uitenhage South Rotary Golf Day is scheduled
for Thursday, 8th May. For sponsors to gain maximum benefit, the format is in the form of a 4-ball alliance one score to count. Tee-off times have been reserved between 10:30 and 13:00. The cost of a sponsored 4-ball is R1 000 and that of a 2-ball R500. Sponsors will be allowed to display company banners, flags or names on the course or at a suitable place at the clubhouse. The prize-giving will take place at around 18:00.
