Police clamp down on criminals P
olice officials in the Uitenhage Cluster have made more than 83 arrests over the past weekend, including nine arrests of persons between the ages of 18 and 55 years for the possession of drugs. “Arrests made vary from murder, rape, the illegal possession of drugs, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, driving under the influence of liquor, theft, shoplifting and public violence,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart.
The street value of the drugs seized was estimated at about R4 000. “The Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ruphuz Pandela and Station Commanders at their respective stations are focused and serious to address effectively current crime tendencies in their policing areas,” said W/O Swart. Police will continue with their efforts to fight crime swiftly and effectively in the Uitenhage Cluster.

Pilot training school heads to U’hage airfield HEILIE COMBRINCK

To fly is heavenly ... to hover, divine!” This is the motto of well-known specialist helicopter pilot and instructor John Huddlestone, who will be opening a light sport aircraft training school at the Uitenhage airfield. “The job market is improving and what better job could you have getting paid to fly? There is a huge demand in chartering in Africa as well as in the local game industry,” said Huddlestone, owner of Helicopter Charter & Training which is based at the PE Airport’s general aviation section. Huddlestone has 37 year’s flying experience with more than 20 000 flying hours, working in South Africa, Argentina and Mauritius. He is rated on 12 helicopter types including Alouette III, Super Frelons and Westland Wasp and also flew Harvards and Impalas. “We are just waiting for the Central Aviation Authority to give us the go-ahead for opening office at the Uitenhage airfield. Then those interested in learning to fly microlights, trikes and other light sports aircraft will be able to do it, nearly on their doorstep. “The Uitenhage airspace is ideal and much more learner friendly. The airfield has a lot of potential and there are many people keen on learning to fly as was experienced during the Wings & Wheels Festival,” said Huddlestone. Currently they are awaiting applications of flight instructors to assist them with training in light sport aircraft at the Uitenhage airfield. According to Huddlestone helicopter training can commence from the age of 15 once you have passed an aviation medical examination. “You could go solo in 15 to 20 hours (from age 17) and

pop-up exhibition, a concept Van Huyssteen and Dodd have become known for. “The term pop-up art exhibition implies that an exhibition can be set up anywhere at any time for a short period and then move to a different location,” said Van Huyssteen. The exhibition will be held one day only on the 25th May. The two artists are already planning and preparing work for their next “pop-up” at Walmer Park Shopping Centre on 28 & 29 June.

Tribute to legendary Gail Lotter HEILIE COMBRINCK
U
itenhage’s own “Iron Lady” Gail Lotter (72) passed away on Monday, 29 April. She made history in the 80’s when she was the only woman serving in the then male dominated Uitenhage Council Chamber. This also was only the second time in Uitenhage’s history a woman councillor was elected, with the late Nellie Steyn being the first ever woman to serve in Council. “She was known as a ‘kwaai vrou’ but you knew where you stood with her as she had a strong sense of right and wrong. She did not discriminate and was known to fight for the underdog,” said Natalie Todd, Gail’s daughter who lives in Auckland, New Zealand. Gail Lotter, well known former Uitenhage councillor, passed away on 29 April 2013.

She once also acted as a judge at a drag queen competition.

Lions’ jerseys a warm welcome! HEILIE COMBRINCK The Uitenhage Lions Club flagship service project to the Uitenhage and Despatch community is their Winter Jersey campaign donations to no fee schools that commenced in 2006. Uitenhage Lions President Freddie Erasmus confirmed that the main reason for launching the project was as a result of the high unemployment in the area. “A large number of learners come from a very deprived socio- economic background. Most parents are unemployed or in receipt of a government grant that results in financial contributions to schools being almost nonexistent. These no-fee schools strive to maintain a high level of performance on the
academic, sport and cultural levels notwithstanding the dire circumstances of their learners.” A perfect example was when Dalrose Primary School pupil Curtly Deysel was selected to represent Eastern Province u.13 rugby at both the National Craven week and sevens at the Pretoria Inter Provincial Tournament during 2012. “The support of local business and the EP biker community for the Uitenhage Lions Club major fundraiser, the Lion Rally, has made this campaign possible,” said Lion Rally Convener Bokkie Oberholzer. This year donations were granted to primary schools Mjuleni and Nokwezi in KwaNobuhle, Dalrose and Seagull in Rosedale and Despatch Preparatory School.

They participated in the category for More Experienced Non Afrikaans speaking category. The choir teacher, René Zietsmann, a teacher at Strelitzia High, has worked with the choir for many years and has taught the girls the value of discipline and hard work. They now wait to hear if they will receive an invitation from the ATKV to the national
round to be held in Bloemfontein, once all the regional rounds are completed and adjudication has been finalised. Among the songs performed was a piece composed especially for the Riebeek Choir by Mbulelo Nzo and entered in the African song category. It was conducted by the head of choir, Uluthando Mdingane, a grade 12 learner at the school. Staff members Patty Metcalf accompanied the girls on the piano and Anton Calitz accompanied the girls on guitar.

he East Cape Off-Road Club (ECOC) is getting ready for its third race of the Data Scout Championship that is being held on Saturday. Racing will take place in the Kabeljous area, Cobs Creek (latitude 33°58’44.84”S, longitude 24°54’31.99”E). There will be indicators in the form of orange stickers guiding spectators where the action will be. Racing starts at 11:00. For the hungry there will be boereworsrolls and roosterkoek for sale. Brandwag netbalspelers kan die fluitjie blaas Ses netbalspelers van Hoërskool Brandwag is provinsiaal gekwalifiseerd om die fluitjie in wedstryde te hanteer nadat hulle onlangs Oostelike Provinsie graderings as skeidsregters voltooi het. Brandwag het, met spelers en onderwysers, altesaam tien gegradeerde skeidsregters, een vir elk van die tien netbalspanne. Onderwysers Alida Duvenhage (SA A) en Karen Schonken (SA C+) het nasionale graderings terwyl Christelize Kemp en Liezel van der Walt OP C-graderings het. Meer as dertig Brandwag netbalspelers het ook die eerste vlak se teorietoets vir skeidsregting suksesvol afgelê. Dit kwalifiseer hulle om die praktiese toets af te lê en help hulle as spelers om die spel beter te verstaan. =Hierdie Brandwag netbalspelers het skeidsregtergrade rings geslaag.
