espatchers word uitgedaag om al die boomstamme in die hoofstraat in pienk te tooi ter ondersteuning van die Pienk Bome vir Pauline liefdadigheidsprojek. “Tot op hede het 96 dorpe hulself verbind om aan die 2014 projek deel te neem. Besighede, organisasies en die publiek is vinnig besig om klaar te speel met die sowat 70km pienk materiaal wat vanjaar beskikbaar gestel is vir die projek,” sê Adri van Niewenhuizen van die Pienk Bome vir Pauline projek. Op Despatch is daar ’n span van vyf wat dié projek op die dorp dryf en graag wil toesien dat die hoofstraat se bome almal pienk lappe om hulle stamme het voor die einde van Oktober. “Ons het reeds 300 meter van die materiaal op die dorp verkoop. Mense kan nie sommer enige pienk lap vat nie. Dit gaan juis om die spesifieke materiaal te koop ten bate van die projek,” vertel Adrie Ferreira, die hooforganiseerder van die Despatch projek. Volgens haar moet alle materiaal aan die einde van die maand van munisipale bome verwyder word, en sal dié lap verwerk word vir projekte ter ondersteuning van kankerlyers op die dorp. Petra van Eeden van die VLV-Despatch sê hulle het reeds nege bome se stamme in die hoofstraat in pienk getooi, maar wil soveel moontlik bome nog in pienk kry. Besighede wat sover die projek ondersteun het sluit in Data Scout, Screen View, 7/11 Despatch, Handy House, Salon Jonel en die UD Nuus. Donkiekarry na 100 jaar steeds ’n lekker herinnering HEILIE COMBRINCK Van donkiekar ry, bone oes in die motdou en koring saai kan niemand vir Lenie Hill van Uitenhage méér vertel nie. Haar 100ste verjaardag is op 8 Oktober gevier en vertellinge van haar jongdae se belewinge laat haar steeds glimlag. Vroue van Uitenhage Lions-diensklub en Levyvale Superspar het Lenie se dag nog meer spesiaal gemaak deur vir haar ’n reuse verjaardagkoek te bak en haar met ’n bos blomme te bederf. Lenie se seun, James Hill, vertel dat sy ma se familie met ossewaens vanaf Willowmore na Uitenhage getrek het en in Middelstraat anderkant Paramountwinkel in die waens gebly het.

“My oupa en pa het toe werk gekry by Hugh se plaas anderkant Lapland in die berg. Daar moes hulle lande braak sodat daar koring gesaai kon word. Later het hulle daar ’n huis gebou en op die plaas gebly,” vertel James. “As jong meisie het sy ook op die land gewerk en bone geplant en oes en koring gesaai. Sy het met die donkiekar dorp toe gery om die koring te laat verwerk en ook hout aan mense in die dorp verkoop.” James vertel dat sy pa met ’n skaapboud onder die arm gaan vlerksleep het by sy ma. “Hy het van haar gehou en toe ’n skaapboud vir haar ouers gevat om eintlik by my ma uit te kom want hy het baie van haar gehou.” Lenie is in 1914 in Willowmore gebore. Sy het agt kinders gehad (twee oorlede) en is ouma van 37 kleinkinders, 66 agterkleinkinders en 10 agter-agterkleinkinders.

he Uitenhage SPCA has been the target of criminals the past two weeks. As it is a welfare organisation, each loss they suffer is felt deeply and they do not have the financial back-up to replace items.

Last week the wheels of all the SPCA vehicles were stolen, grounding the association’s daily services for a day and they were not able to attend to calls of distress. “Last night (Monday night) we had another break-in! This time both our washing machines, microwave oven and kettle were stolen,” said Tiffany Dickson from the Uitenhage SPCA. “Please, we urgently need the generosity and kindness of the public once again to assist in replacing the two semi-industrial washing machines. It is much needed as we need to wash

the kennel blankets on a daily basis. The microwave and kettle are also essential.” According to Koos Kroucamp, an officer at the Uitenhage SPCA, the conditions in which the break-ins happened and the fact that the dogs did not bark, “gave us the impression that it might be someone who is familiar with the SPCA environment. The Algoa Boardwalk Big Walk for Cancer proceeds will go to the unique Igazi Foundation, in the hope of launching a new pediatric oncology ward in the Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital, by the end of the year.

Cricket games to start at BUCO cricket club REPORTER The BUCO Uitenhage Cricket Club is presently enjoying its 153rd season in the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage and surrounding area cricket leagues. After operating out of the then Swifts Sport Club premises in Lower Drostdy Street for some 40 to 50 years, the club has enjoyed the tranquil ambient Skillicorn complex on the corner of Mosel Road and Park Lane since moving there during the summer of 2000/2001. The club has at its convenience two cricket fields plus turf practice nets which are shared with the boys from the local “College on the Hill”. Cricket is played competitively on most weekends during the summer months, and the club caters for young men from all communities in Uitenhage and surrounds.
