A
roadblock to clamp down on illegal waste transporters at the Koedoeskloof Tip near Uitenhage was held last week, with Nelson Mandela Bay’s Deputy Executive Mayor, Mongameli Bobani in attendance.
The operation was a joint effort by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Waste Management Law Enforcement Officers (Town Rangers), the NMBM Metro Police and Safety and Security officials. In the past 4 weeks fines to the total value of more than R40 000 have been issued. Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki explained that waste management transporters are companies or operators who transport waste at a fee from industry, businesses and households to different metro tip sites. “In terms of by-laws, transporters are expected to register as waste transporters, their vehicles must be in a good, legally acceptable condition and a valid licence disc must be displayed on the vehicles, which must be driven by licensed drivers who are eligible to drive a vehicle of that particular size.” The transportation of waste must be done in a safe and well-packaged manner that does not put other road users at risk and the type of waste materials being transported to a particular tip site must comply with the type of waste that the tip site is allowed to receive. Deputy Executive Mayor Mongameli Bobani said, “This is a start to an intensive programme of cleaning Nelson Mandela Bay. Non-complying operators are no longer going to be tolerated. “We are also working through Council processes to increase the amount of fines, as some of the companies or operators continue to break the rules. “Habitual offenders must be dealt with through much harsher measures.” (Reporter)

volg deur Hexrivierweg, Graaff-Reinetweg en Daniel Pienaarstraat tot weer in Aalwynrylaan. Johan hoop om ten minste 160 rondtes van 5.2km per dag te voltooi. Dit beteken 832km per dag en uiteindelik 4 992km oor ses dae. Die eerste rondte sal dit net Johan, Ruané Wentzel (11), Jamie-Lee Barendse (25), Janecke Schuin (10), die Fuel on Wheels-span en die motorfietsklub Entangled Freedom wees. Daarna is enige iemand welkom om saam met ons fiets te ry, draf of te stap. Saterdag, 1 April word ook ’n spesiale rondte ter herinnering aan Jayde Panayiotou gehou. Die liefdadigheidstog word daarna by
Danskraal in Cuylerstraat met ’n potjiekosen boereworskompetisie sowel as dans om 18:30 afgesluit. Toegang vir die dag is R20 per persoon. Johan sê daar is ’n paar redes waarom hy so ’n groot uitdaging aanpak, maar dat dit hoofsaaklik gaan om mense met gestremdhede te help en om bewustheid te skep. “Ek hou daarvan om uitdagings aan te pak. Op hierdie stadium leef ek my drome en doen dit om mense te motiveer om nooit tou op te gooi nie.” En dan, is dit ook die perfekte manier om Fuel on Wheels se eerste verjaardag te vier. Several crime prevention operations were conducted over the past weekend and it resulted in the arrest of a total of 181 suspects for various crimes in the Uitenhage Cluster. “On Sunday members from Uitenhage Visible Policing confiscated 131 bundles of Khat and two suspects were arrested for the illegal possession of this drug,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart. “The confiscated Khat was estimated to be worth R4 500 and the two men, aged 35 and 40, were arrested and appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court last Monday on charges of illegal possession of Khat.” A total of 28 other suspects were detained for the illegal possession of drugs. Other arrests made during the weekend included for murder, armed robbery, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, rape, theft, theft out of motor vehicle, housebreaking and theft and the possession of suspected stolen goods. Four (4) persons were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor over the past weekend. A total of 22 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R11 000. Suspects were also arrested on charges relating to malicious damage to property and contravention of a protection order. During an integrated roadblock that was conducted last Friday, 127 vehicles were stopped and searched and 6 traffic fines valued at R2 500 were issued. Metro warns: pay your traffic fines ROSLYN BAATJIES Motorists in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro with unpaid traffic fines from 2014 to date must arrange to pay them! John Best, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security said, “We have more than 52 000 outstanding warrants in 2014, 2015 and 2016 that will be served on offenders. “The outstanding fines for which the warrants are issued, amount to R32.8 million.” He said the traffic department has identified the 20 biggest debtors. Of these 20, some have up to 20 warrants issued against them. The Metro began to deliver
the warrants last week. “People do not pay their fines and they disregard notices to appear in court.” He said all the fines were legally issued. The municipality is in a court battle with Pieter Swanepoel of Traffic Violation Specialists about the alleged re-issuing of traffic fines. The case is related to the locations of speeding violations as indicated on traffic fines, which were allegedly changed to include a wider section of the road to ensure the legality of the fines. “We are busy fighting the case and three lawyers are involved,” said Best. Fines of deceased offenders would be written off immediately if evidence could be provided of their deaths, he said.

Volgens hom beloop die projekkoste sowat R9.9 miljoen oor ’n driejaartydperk waarvan die munisipaliteit en Harambee elk R4 miljoen sal bydra en die private sektor R1.99 miljoen. Whitfield sê Harambee sal die program in twee fases in werking stel: Die ontwerpfase, wat van Januarie tot Junie 2017 strek en die eerste fase, wat van Julie 2017 tot Junie 2018 strek. Hulle wil in dié tydperk 10 000 jong mense bereik en 2 000 werkgeleenthede skep. Die ondertekening van ’n ooreenkoms tussen die munisipaliteit en Harambee is onderhewig aan goedkeuring deur die metroraad.

“Dit is my kind, ek weet ek mag nie brag nie, maar ek kan nie anders nie,” sê Twakkies du Toit in sy sitkamer op Despatch, waarheen hy en sy vrou Zelda getrek het na sy aftrede by St Albans Gevangenisdiens. Ruhan is ‘n stembandtowenaar wat met die grootste gemak wissel tussen opera, ‘n rasper rockstem en lekker-luister Afrikaanse braaisongs. Hy sing AC/DC se Thunderstruck beter as die oorspronklike kunstenaars. Sy verwerking van O Solo Mio soos gesing deur Pavarotti en Bryan Adams is briljant. En sy stem toor met liedjies van bekendes soos Elvis, Demis Roussos, Gé Korsten en Groep Twee. Zelda het al die jare Twakkies en hul twee seuns Ruhan en Jeanré (31) se sangloopbane voluit ondersteun en was die klankvrou! “Ruhan het nooit formele sangonderrig gehad nie. Hy het op sy eie geoefen en sy stem soos goud opgepas, want hy het van kleintyd af gesê al wat hy wil doen is sing!” Sound of Silence is sy groot treffer. Hy en broer Jeanré het dit in hul tienerjare saamgesing en dit is ook die titel van een van hulle CDs. Die broers het in 2000 hul kitare gepak en is Gauteng toe om hulle sangloopbane voort te sit. Jeanré het dit later vaarwel geroep, maar help nou dan nog sy broer uit met opnames. Nadat Ronell Erasmus besluit het om Touch of Class te verruil vir voltydse geestelike musiek het Ruhan by Deon van der Merwe van Touch of Class aangesluit. “Dit was ‘n kitssukses en die manne se musiek is magic,” sê Twakkies. Ruhan was ook goed bevriend met Joost van der Westhuizen en is gevra om by sy gedenkdiens op Loftus Sound of Silence te sing. Dit was

UITENHAGE CAMERA CLUB: PHOTO COMPETITION
Local photographers invited to enter ‘nice shots’ HEILIE COMBRINCK The Uitenhage Camera Club in conjunction with the UD News will be hosting a photo competition and all keen photographers, whether complete novices, experienced or career photographers may enter. It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but this beauty differs just as people’s perspectives differ. Ansel Adams, an international photographer said, “A good photograph is knowing where to stand.” This not only means the physical spot you choose to stand to take a photo at a specific angle, but and also what is your stand or perspective regarding what and why you take a specific photo. Through the photo competition, the Uitenhage Camera Club (UCC) wishes to give acknowledgement to those who look differently at what features around them. This the Club will do by means of excellent prizes category winners. Age categories There will be simply two age categories: juniors (between the ages of 14 and 18 years); and a senior category (19 years and older). No
member of the UCC is allowed to enter, not even under a pseudonym. Rules The competition will run for 3 months, starting today and the winners will be announced on Thursday, June 15th. Only electronic entries will be accepted and photos should not be larger than 4MB. It may be in colour or black and white. Manipulation is allowed, but is restricted to cropping, sharpening, colour, saturation and contrast. Photos may be taken with any electronic optical device and will be judged on par with all entries, provided that the criteria were taken into account. Photo categories Categories for participation are Landscapes; Seascapes; Cityscapes; Common ob-
jects (anything from marbles to sewing machines); Wildlife (mammals, reptiles birds, flowers or bugs - but not domestic animals). A participant may enter up to 5 images per category. Each entry must be accompanied by your name and surname, age, photo category, type of device used, postal address, e-mail address. Entries are to be sent to uccfoto@gmail.com and will be accepted until 23:59 on Thursday, 15 June. Entry fees The entry fee is R10 per image for juniors and R20 per image for seniors. Thousands of scholars expected at Sundays River Valley arts and culture festival HEILIE COMBRINCK During August the 6th annual arts and culture festival will be hosted by Sundays River Valley Primary and this year it will be known as the Sundays River Valley Provincial Arts and Culture Festival. According to Cornelius Korkie, Head: Arts & Culture at Sundays River Valley Primary, thousands of learners annually participate in
the festival and currently it is the largest educational festival of its kind in the Eastern Cape. “Approximately 55 primary and high schools are expected to participate and there will be 12 categories consisting of more than 50 sub-sessions. There will be magnificent prizes with the compliments of our dedicated sponsors,” said Korkie. The sub-sessions of participation include instrumental music, bands, dance, singing,
choirs, speech and drama, creative writing, karate, provincial choir competition, provincial singing competition, arts and crafts including themed categories, photography and many more. This year also includes live marimba/djembe performances from Mozambique including professional workshops. “The festival has become extremely popular over the years and is respected for its outstanding adjudicators, professional standard
and above all, the sincere friendliness of festival staff. Like any festival there will be a variety of food and other vendors on the premises. An ode to social workers The profession of social work is highly misinterpreted in our society. Therefore the month of March is acknowledged as Social Workers month, informing the public about the heart of this career. People so often perceive social workers as ladies who give free food parcels, ladies who take children away from their families and send their children away to homes, ladies who fill the gaps between people and SASSA grants. Being a social worker is challenging for many yet very rewarding. Social Worker Corinne Moodley had the following to say in favour of fellow social workers: “Being a social worker means that you have to serve as a network system between the client and institutions such as doctors, psychologist, psychiatrists, lawyers, hospitals, home affairs, old age homes. Being a social worker means that you have to be an educator and enhance people with coping mechanisms for many of the challenges that our clients are faced with today, be it poverty, unemployment, domestic violence, child abuse, HIV/Aids, TB, drug abuse. Being a social worker means that you have to be an advocate of human rights. It means
that you should empathise with clients who visit our offices to seek help with issues such as abortions, child abuse, domestic violence, drug related problems, prostitution, being homeless, suicide, rape, neglect, child trafficking- amongst other issues. For most it means having sleepless nights, thinking about a case which could be dealt with better if resources were available. It means despite being shouted at, doors being shut in our faces, stones being thrown at us, we are obligated to ensure that a child is safe. It means having paperwork that can take you up to a month to complete; it means endless court appearances and home visits, entering houses where you are most likely not welcomed into. Being a social worker means walking a journey with each and every client that enters your office and identifying their strengths as a tool to help them help themselves. A social worker’s job is not to figure out if someone deserves something, it is to lift the fallen, restore the broken and to help the hurting heal. To all Social Workers, we salute you! Wrestling action part of air show programme More action and extreme challenges have been added to the annual Wings & Wheels Doug Davidson Memorial Air Show which will be hosted at the Uitenhage Airfield from March 31st to April 1st. Aerobatic champs Patrick Davidson and his father Stu Davidson will once again showcase their skills. Aircraft like a Mustang, L39 Jet and Sea Furie will be seen as well as helicopters, motor gliders, Gyrocopters, light aircraft, micro lights and radio controlled aircraft.

Fietsryer Johan Oosthuizen (40) van Uitenhage, wie bekendheid verwerf het vir sy Fuel on Wheels uitdagings, gaan poog om drie Guiness rekords te verbeter vanaf 26 Maart tot 1 April. Eerste op sy rekordlys is die meeste kilometers om een spesifieke sirkelroete vir ’n niewinsgewende organisasie. Die huidige rekord is 4 400km. Volgende op sy lys is om ’n nuwe rekord aan te teken vir die opdraandes wat hy oor ses dae gaan voltooi. Die huidige rekord is 35 000m. “Ek moet meer as 49 000m se opdraande uit trap. Dit is gelykstaande aan om Mount Everest in ses dae uit te klim.” Sy laaste rekordpoging is om vir 12-ure aaneen fiets te ry. Johan sê Uitenhage het huidiglik nie een werêrldrekord nie. En as jy hom vra of hy dit gaan maak, is hy beslis: “Sonder twyfel. Ek het genoeg petrol in my tenk.” Raak betrokke Individue en besighede kan by die uitdaging betrokke raak en so hul deel vir liefdadigheid doen. Fondse is so ingesamel om ’n rolstoel vir Jamie-Lee Barendse (25) te skenk. Sy ly aan spina bifida en is dus gedeeltelik verlam. Sedertdien het Fuel on Wheels ook vir Ruané Wentzel (11) gehelp. Sy ly aan primêre limfedeem en het ’n drukkous benodig om bloedvloei na haar been aan te help. Fuel on Wheels het die 10-jarige Despatcher, Janecke Schuin, wat haar been in ’n ongeluk verloor het ook ondersteun. Fondse is ingesamel om dit vir haar moontlik te maak om ’n kunsbeen te kry. Verder het die organisasie kos, klere en skryfbehoeftes aan die Laerskool Innes geskenk. “Baie dankie aan die Entangled Freedom Biker Club en ook soveel ander motorfietsryers vir hulle ondersteuning. Sonder hulle sou ons fondsinsamelingprojekte nie so suksesvol gewees het nie,” sê Johan. “’n Groot dankie gaan ook aan al die lede van Fuel on Wheels en die gemeenskap. Atletiekklub hou pretloop vir Janecke Despatch Atletiekklub hou op die eerskomende vakansiedag, 21 Maart, ’n 5km pretloop by Laerskool Sonop op die dorp om te help geld insamel vir Janecke Schuin (10) wat haar regterbeen in ’n fratsongeluk verloor het. Fondse word ingesamel om haar mediese kostes te dek en veral om ’n hardlooplemprostese vir haar te kry om haar sport te beoefen. Polo Vivo revives the freedom of Citi Golf REPORTER
Over that time, the Uitenhage plant produced over 377 000 units, many of which are still used on South African roads for daily commute. The Citi Golf gained some of its popularity from the quirky and humorous television and print adverts that told a South African story. These adverts were complemented by the engineering ingenuity that gave Citi Golf longevity in the local market and cult status. olkswagen is paying homage to its venerable and legendary Citi Golf model with the introduction of the limited edition Citi Vivo. Citi Vivo is bringing back the ubiquitous three colours of Red, Yellow and Blue which were used to launch the original Citi Golf in 1984. The production of the iconic Citi Golf at the Volkswagen manufacturing factory in Uitenhage ended in 2009 after 25 years of giving mobility freedom to many South African customers.
