Volkswagen South Africa the company invested over R7 billion in plant, product and infrastructure. The factory was modernised and platforms rationalised with the introduction of the Polo and Polo Vivo in 2010. Local content was increased significantly to levels in excess of 70%, helped by the establishment of numerous Global suppliers in the Nelson Mandela Logistics Park in Uitenhage. These two cars have been the best-selling passenger models in South Africa since introduction and helped to secure passenger market leadership for VWSA for four consecutive years. The Dealer network has been modernised and Audi and Volkswagen have become the benchmark in customer satisfaction in the industry in South Africa. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles was also established as a standalone brand with the introduction of Crafter, Caddy and subsequently the Amarok. David Powels made people a priority with a strong focus on skills development, career planning and the up skilling of all employees which was driven through the five Learning Academies established for this purpose. As a result, VWSA was recognised as a Top Employer for four years in a row which also included recognition for innovative concepts such as the fortnightly One Team meetings for all production employees and the PeoplePavilion - a first in the VW Group - a sport, recreation, rehabilitation and community center built on the banks of the Swartkops river adjacent to the Uitenhage plant. David Powels moves to one VWAG’s biggest operations outside of Germany, a country with a population of over 200 million people, with a car market of 3.5 million cars a year with Volkswagen being the biggest manufacturer in Brazil producing over 700 000 cars a year. Volkswagen do Brasil is the largest vehicle manufacturer and one of the largest private companies in the country. Currently, with 23 models, Volkswagen do Brasil offers a complete portfolio of vehicles including locally developed cars such as the Gol, Fox and Saveiro. Volkswagen do Brasil also has the largest dealer network, with more than 600 dealerships in the country. olkswagen Group South Africa has announced that its Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa, David Powels, has been appointed as President of Volkswagen do Brasil. Thomas Schäfer will be his successor as from February 2015. David Powels, a Chartered Accountant, was born and educated in Port Elizabeth. He joined VWSA in 1989 in the Finance Division and it was not long before he made his mark and he became Export Manager traveling the world looking for Group companies who would accept components from this country. He returned to the Finance Division in 1993 to head the Controlling Division. This was followed by a foreign assignment in Finance at both Volkswagen AG and Audi AG. He returned to South Africa in 1998 as Finance Director, a post he held for four years before becoming Vice President Finance and Corporate Strategy at Volkswagen do Brasil in 2002. In 2007, he returned to South Africa as Managing Director. Thomas Schäfer, an Engineer, has been working for the Volkswagen Group (VWAG) since 2012 as Head of Group Production (Foreign Plants). He started his working career at Mercedes Benz AG in 1994. No stranger to South Africa, he moved to East London in 1998 in a management role at Mercedes Benz South Africa. In 2002 he moved to Malaysia as the Plant Manager and remained there for Mercedes till 2005 when he returned to Germany responsible for the planning of their Production plants. Rotary Anns donate theatre instruments REPORTER The Uitenhage South Rotary Anns indirectly assisted in restoring the sight of persons who are in need of cataract surgery through donating much needed theatre instruments to the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital. These instruments include the Hoskins forceps which are used to manipulate any eye tissue during cataract surgery and other eye surgeries. A nucleus manipulator, used to manipulate the cataractous lens around in
the eye during cataract removal was donated as well as utility scissors which are used to cut tissue. Dr. Olivia Read, an Ophthalmology Consultant at Uitenhage Provincial Hospital said, “We see a large number of patients in our eye clinic, many of whom have cataracts and as a result we operate on a large number of patients, approximately 40-50 each month. “We struggle to get instruments and often need to borrow instruments from PE Provincial Hospital, so you have made our lives a lot easier!”

noseer is, is die All Black sewes-rugbyspan gister verwelkom toe hulle by hom en sy vrou, Gloret, se huis in Despatch gaan inloer het. “Dankie dat ons hier in jou ‘man cave’ toegelaat word,” het die All Black-kaptein, Derek Jamie “DJ” Forbes, met die groetslag gesê en na die vertrek propvol rugbyaandenkings gewys.
“Ons het gekom om jou te bemoedig. Dit is ses jaar nadat MNS by jou gediagnoseer is en ons wens jou en jou familie alle sterkte toe vir die jare vorentoe,” het Forbes gesê en na die foto’s gekyk van Werner in sy rolstoel langs Joost van der Westhuizen, ook ’n MNS-lyer en ook in ’n rolstoel. Toe vertel Forbes van die spesiale oomblik

Twee weke daarna is prostaatkanker by hom gediagnoseer! “Ons was platgeslaan. Op ’n dag het ’n familielid ’n boek getiteld Eric is Winning vir ons gegee. Dit was baie bemoedigend en van
het Werner gesê “môre kom vanself. ’n Mens moenie oor môre worry nie. Lééf vandag. Ons almal kry terugslae, maar dit is deel van die lewe.” Werner spot en sê hy is ’n “bogger-op” want buiten dat hy MNS het en ’n diabeet is het hy op 21-jarige ouderdom sy hoofslagaar in sy regterbeen tydens ’n rugbywedstryd beseer. Na 72 dae in die hospitaal en drie mislukte operasies en die opdrag om nooit weer aan sport deel te neem nie, het hy na vyf jaar besluit die rugbyveld roep te hard en wéér gaan speel. “Hy sê hy is ’n bogger-op, maar ek sê hy is ’n wonderwerk. Daar is soveel dinge wat in sy lewe verkeerd geloop het, maar hy bly lag en bly glo in die goeie,” sê Gloret. All Black kaptein DJ Forbes het gesê hy hoop dat as hulle weer na Port Elizabeth kom, hulle ’n draai by Werner en Gloret sal kan maak om die tradisie van Kiwi-omgee voort te sit.

Crowds cheer as local winner drives away in a Merc A LUCKY resident of Salt Lake in the Port Elizabeth Northern Areas is driving around in a Mercedes-Benz. Donavan Hendriks was the first winner of the Bingo Royale Cleary Park “Win a Merc” competition. Hundreds of people joined in the excitement at BOSS Gaming Bingo outlets across the province over the weekend as three lucky winners celebrated Christmas early by driving away in a Mercedes Benz. Eastern Cape empowerment company BOSS Gaming operates Bingo Royale Cleary Park, Bingo Royale East London CBD and Ritz Gaming and Entertainment in Mthatha. The action from inside the Bingo Royale venue was relayed live to the crowd outside, as well as tothe neighbouring Vinny’s Italian Joint restaurant. Many made a day of it by booking their table and arriving early to enjoy traditional Italian dish-
es, draft beer and La Dolcé Vita Caffé. As part of the fun thousands of rand were also given away to lucky members of the audience through Money Showers, which regularly form part of the entertainment at the venue. “We want all our guests to experience their perfect moment,” says Bingo Royale director Yolande Manuel. “It’s our motto and one we as a group try to achieve on a daily basis!” The festivities, fuelled by the day’s events and a large share of Christmas cheer carried through well into the night, “Rounding off a spectacular first for the Boss Gaming and entertainment groups branches in the Eastern Cape,” she adds. The two Bingo Royale venues and their neighbouring Vinny’s Italian Joint restaurants were opened in the last six months, and have already established themselves as favourite entertainment venues. In addition to Bingo there is live music three times a week and fun dining at Vinny’s, says Manuel.

Take care of pets this festive season The SPCA movement asks the public to be their eyes and ears during the festive season and if you encounter any situation involving an animal that concerns you, report it as quickly as possible to the Uitenhage SPCA on 082 905 4716 or 083 516 9652. “There is a trend for people to post photographs on Facebook,” explained NSPCA PRO Christine Kuch. “This delays response, rather contact the SPCA immediately with as much information as possible regarding an animal being cruelly treated, neglected, abused or abandoned.” An appeal is made to be mindful of the welfare of all animals and not to fear coming forward with information. As with so many issues, animal welfare starts at home and the SPCA gives the following tips:

Freda Strauss, ’n inwoner van Aandmymering Tehuis vir Senior Burgers se 100ste verjaardag word op Maandag, 29 Desember gevier. Sy is in 1914 op Bultfontein in die Vrystaat gebore as die oudste dogter van William en Maggie Henegan. Freda het aan Girls High op Potchefstroom gematrikuleer en is later met Jan Strauss getroud waarna sy vir lank boervrou was op ’n familieplaas in die Colesberg-distrik. Die egpaar het drie kinders gehad, onder andere Margie van Rooy van Uitenhage. Freda het een kleinseun, 3 kleindogters en 2 agterkleindogters. Freda het haar lewe lank ’n trotse en positiewe lewensuitkyk met opregte bewondering vir die mooi dinge van die lewe sowel as die natuur. Sy het vroeër jare sonder huiwering projekte aangepak en was bekend vir die maak van trou- en aandrokke en was ewe knap met tuinmaak en in die voorberei van spogmaaltye. Freda woon sedert 2002 op Uitenhage en het in 2004 na Aandmymering verhuis.

CONVENT PRIMARY’S CHRISTMAS CAROLS <The Uitenhage Convent R.C. Primary School presented their annual Nativity Play and Christmas Carols. As usual, the Grade 3 learners performed the play while the school choir, under the directorship of the principal John Dennis, gave a polished rendition of a selection of carols. Although the story of the birth of Christ remains unchanged, it is retold every year with a different slant and its enactment is a highlight in the school’s calendar. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

<The Martiz Care St Joseph’s Outreach to the Poor soup kitchens in Blikkiesdorp, Joe Slovo and Mandelaville are the longest running soup kitchens in town. It was established in 1994 and is still serving the hungry and less fortunate in these areas. Joan Blewett (left) has been assisting with these soup kitchens since the start. Here she is with Lalla Yerolem ou, owner of Spyros Kwikspar, one of the local businesses which have been supporting St Joseph’s Outreach to the Poor in Uitenhage for several years. ’n Matriekleerder van Brandwag het in 2014 in netbal geskiedenis gemaak deur die eerste skolier in Suid-Afrika te word wat as ’n SAskeidsregter gegradeer is. Beane Weyers, kaptein van die eerste netbalspan, het vroeër vanjaar haar gradering na OP “B” verbeter. Skeidsregters wat provinsiaal ’n “B”-gradering behaal, mag by spesifieke nasionale toernooie die toets aanpak om ’n SA-gradering te verwerf. Netbalskeidsregters moet teoretiese eksamens aflê, streng fiksheidstoetse ondergaan en word dan op die baan getoets. Beane het tydens ’n nasionale sporttoernooi by NMMU daarin geslaag om ’n SA “C”-gradering te verwerf. Madibaz athletics coaching clinic to be held at Kirkwood REPORTER Young athletes looking to start their season on the right foot will have another chance to sign up for a three-day summer coaching clinic presented by NMMU Madibaz Athletics Club.

4x4 Challenge at Paradise Beach REPORTER The Eastern Cape 4x4 Challenge Club will be hosting a 4x4 challenge event on Saturday at Paradise Beach near Jeffreys Bay. The event will host all the regular competition classes as well as standard production 4x4 bakkies. Members of the public are welcome to enter their 4x4 vehicles in the Standard Production class, but a crash helmet is mandatory. The event will start at 09:00 with competitor registration from 07:30 to 08:30. The entrance fee is R30 for adults and R20 for children under 16 years of age. Refreshments will be on sale throughout the day.
