Feast of music with NMU choir and mastrimba band Two of the prides of the province, Nelson Mandela University Choir and the Strelitzia Mastrimba Band will be performing in Uitenhage on Thursday, 24 August at Strelitzia High School. The school’s mastrimba band and choir will open the concert where-after the NMU Choir will be the main musical performers of the evening.

NMU choir conductor Junita Lamprecht van Dijk hails from Uitenhage where she matriculated at Brandwag High School. Her career as professional choir conductor commenced on a high note at Framesby High School as the choir was the runner-up of a competition in Holland and they enjoyed the honour of performing in front of Pope John Paul II.

During 1994 she established the internationally acclaimed university choir of Nelson Mandela University. She later established a choir conducting programme at NMU in conjunction with Norgeskorfbund. She is also, together with her husband Dr Peter Louis van Dijk, responsible for post graduate training of choir conductors across the country. The NMU choir has for the past decade on an an-

This comes after a fire broke out in one of the dormitories on the second floor of the hostel just after 19:00 on Wednesday, August 9th. “The extensive smoke damage on the second floor extended to other dormitories,” said the Eastern Cape Department of Education’s spokesperson, Malibongwe Mtima. The local fire department was called to the scene to deal with the fire. “Luckily all the learners were in the dining hall when the fire broke out as it was their study session, so they were all safe,” he explained.

It previously was called manic depression and involves episodes of mania and depression with periods of normal mood in between. Untreated bipolar disorder can be devastating with great personal suffering, disruptive relationships, derailing careers and an increased risk of death from suicide and accident. There is hope Proper treatment however can be effective

in returning people to more healthy and productive lives. Bipolar disorder is similar to other lifelong illnesses such as high blood pressure and diabetes - in that it cannot be cured. But it can be managed successfully through proper treatment. How to get help If you suspect that you, a family member, or a friend has bipolar disorder, consult a mental health professional. It also is essential to learn more about your illness. The more you know, the more control you will have over your life. This is where a Bipolar Support Group plays a key role in making the community aware about mental health. The newly upgraded Campanile was unveiled by Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip during a media launch held on Tuesday. World class heritage tourism destination Andrew Whitfield, Economic Development, Agriculture and Tourism Mayoral Committee Member, said the Campanile is a “universal asset that will benefit tourism industry and thus support the tourism economy value chain.” Some of the new features of the Campanile include an interactive visual-technology array dubbed ‘Ghost Bells’ – bell proxies installed under the actual bell carillon which visually light up during chiming. It also lights up when visitors press keys of an interactive silver console to match the pitch of a key with the corresponding bell. Another addition includes the harbourviewing window - an observation deck capsule at the top of the 50m Campanile memorial, suspending visitors in the sky when they overlook the Port Elizabeth harbour. Campanile bell to play any melody A special computerised, purpose-built, electro-mechanical bell ringing system has also been installed for the Campanile’s 17 ton bell carillon that was removed, restored and reinstalled by the MBDA over the last year to ensure that the crispness of each bell was pitch perfect. The Campanile bell can now play any melody which gets programmed into its state-of-the-art digital interface. A new reception area that will act as an information desk and several exhibition areas within the Campanile for the city’s creative communities has been developed. Start of Route 67 The Campanile offers a welcoming start to the city’s iconic Route 67 – a public art urban meander dedicated to Nelson Mandela. Theresa Prince, ’n internasionale netbalskeidsregter en bemarker van die Hoërskool Despatch, is ewe passievol oor plaaslike en internasionale netbal. “Elke wedstryd is spesiaal vir my. En ek hanteer elkeen met dieselfde professionaliteit en aandag,” sê sy. Haar passie is onlangs wéér deur die Internasionale Netbalfederasie (INF) raakgesien toe die federasie Prince uitgenooi het om eersdaags by die Quad-netbaltoernooi in Australië te blaas. Prince sê die Quad-netbaltoernooi is gelykstaande aan die rugbykampioenskap wat Saterdag in Port Elizabeth tussen die Springbokke en Argentinië begin. Die wêreld se drie beste netbalspanne – Aus-

tralië, Nieu-Seeland en Engeland – asook Suid-Afrika (tans die vyfde beste) sê mekaar die stryd aan in die toernooi. Vir internasionale toernooie soos dié word skeidsregters deur die INF volgens hul vorige wedstryde beoordeel en slegs die beste skeidsregters word genooi om te blaas. Van die ses skeidsregters vir die toernooi is Prince die enigste Suid-Afrikaner. “Dit bly ’n voorreg om met die wêreld se beste netbalspelers in kontak te wees,” sê Prince in reaksie op haar uitnodiging. Sedert Prince haar internasionale gradering in 2010 in Londen verwerf het, was sy reeds in meer as 100 wedstryde wêreldwyd skeidsregter. Tussen die Afrika-netbalbeker, Statebondspele en netbal-wêreldbekertoernooi het sy genoeg ervaring opgedoen om in die geselskap te wees van die beste skeidsregters ter wêreld. Prince vertrek Sondag na Australië, waar die toernooi Saterdag 26 Augustus begin.

Lions senior citizen spring lunch The Uitenhage Lions Club has moved their annual senior citizens’ supper to September and now calls it the Senior Citizens’ Spring Lunch. The Spring Lunch will be held on September 2nd at 12:00 at the Woga Venue (old

In die beginjare van die Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk Uitenhage, presies 200 jaar gelede, het Goewerneur Cradock twee ouderlinge benoem om saam met â&#x20AC;&#x2122;n landdros die kerkraad te vorm, aangesien daar geen predikant op die dorp was nie.

Die kerk het â&#x20AC;&#x2122;n ryk geskiedenis, aanvanklik vol struwelinge om die eerste kerk klaar gebou te kry. Her interest in the sport grew and she has successfully passed two scoring course examinations from Cricket South Africa. Nowadays she is a qualified CSA level C scorer. Zaahidah acts as a score keeper for the first

cricket team of Daniel Pienaar THS and also for at premier league club cricket matches, as well as EP Cricket regional two day and 50over competitions. She is also a score keeper for the EP senior provincial and Warriors matches played at St George’s Park. She does book, on-line and linear scoring. Apart from keeping scores, she assists her dad, Zarier Sirkotte the cricket coach at Daniel Pienaar THS, by compiling statistics for each of the first team cricket players throughout the season.

Despatch chess player in SA team Wian Schutte, a Grade 9 learner at Despatch High School was selected to represent South Africa in the African Schools Individual Chess Championships which will be held in Zimbabwe. from 19-28August. Wian represented the Eastern Cape in the in the Winter SA School chess championships which were held in Durban. He ended in third position in the category for boys U/15. Wian is the only chess player from the Eastern Cape included in the SA schools chess team. Chess players from 47 African countries will participate and this includes learners from Egypt, Ghana, Botswana, Cape Verde, Madagascar, Malawi and Libya to name a few. The championships will be played in Harare at The Rainbow Towers Hotel and Conference Centre in the city’s central business district.

The expo will take place at the Boardwalk’s Exhibition Level on Friday, September 29 and Saturday, September 30 from 9am to 6pm, as well as Sunday, October 1 from 9am to 7pm. Celebrating its eighth year, the expo will provide indoor educational and entertainment for the whole family as well as a new Parenting 911 workshop for busy moms and toddler care professionals. As headline sponsor to the event, First Choice places special focus on the health and wellness of families with germ-free dairy products produced in the heart of the Eastern Cape at Woodlands Dairy from predominantly pasture-fed cow’s milk ensuring that it is safe for the whole household. Boks expect massive battle against Pumas T

he Springboks are expecting a tight encounter against Argentina when they play their first 2017 Rugby Championship match on Saturday. And for that reason, Bok assistant coach Johann van Graan says the team will focus on fine-tuning their preparations this week in anticipation of fired up Pumas side. “Last year we had two close-fought battles with the Pumas, and we expect the same when we play them over the next two weeks,” said Van Graan. “They always have a good scrum, their mauling is a huge threat while their biggest strength is probably at the breakdown. In addition to that, the Pumas are also fantastic

Countdown to IRONMAN 70.3 has started Nelson Mandela Bay is poised to benefit immensely from what will be a double header year when the city hosts the regular IRONMAN African Championship in April 2018 and later in September 2018 the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.
