itenhage Police urge residents to report any criminal or suspicious activity regarding the so-called “Uitenhage Four” who are allegedly knocking on residents’ doors and then either rob or assault them. Police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart said that they are aware of the rumours regarding the Uitenhage Four, but no incidents whatsoever have to date (Tuesday, February 16th) been reported to the Uitenhage police.

According to W/O Swart, the police can not investigate any allegations or open up criminal cases unless residents report them to the police. “A charge has to be laid before police can commence with any investigations,” said W/ O Swart. The UD News last week posted a warning on Facebook which was received via WhatsApp regarding the scammers. It reads as follows, “There are two white men and a lady walking the streets. The lady will knock on the door and indicate that she would like to address you and your family on flu and cancer

and requests you to let her enter your home. As you allow her to enter, she keeps the door open allowing the two men to enter. This happened, in the Uitenhage area close to Daniel Pienaar to a friend.” On the UD News|Nuus Facebook page, various readers commented on the post saying that there actually are two men and two females and that they have been to their homes. According to some readers the female with the blonde hair goes by the name of “Elmie”. Most readers have said the people have not hurt or threatened them in any way, but were

insistent in trying to sell a product called “Aquazone”. “No murders, no robberies have been reported and no cases have been opened at the police station. People should refrain from panicking,” said W/O Swart. Chemistry between art and food REPORTER A mediterranean themed restaurant and coffee shop in Uitenhage has added a different spice to its menu. Also on offer is the delight of viewing works of art from two well-known Eastern Cape artists. Paintings from artists Tertius van Huyssteen and Llise Dodd will be exhibited on a permanent basis at Saffron restaurant, 72 Cannon Street. Owners James and Olwen Carson met Tertius and Llise a few years ago when the two artists organised an Art Safari in Uiten-

At the end of last year they offered the artists, who together run a pop-up art gallery, a room in Saffron to exhibit some of their works on a permanent basis. “Saffron is now the mooring place for our works between exhibitions. We can swop the art when we need it for other exhibitions and we can also use the venue for exhibiting other artists work when we need all our work for exhibitions,” said Tertius van Huyssteen. Blood shortage please donate and help save lives REPORTER The South African National Blood Service is currently experiencing a national blood shortage and is relying on the public to open up their veins to alleviate the pressure on patients and their families. According to Maryke Harris, Public Relations Practitioner at the South African National Blood Service, “a ‘cut-back system’ have been imposed nationally, where fewer units are issued compared with what doctors ordered, in order to spread products to all patients in need. Blood is moved around the

country to where the need is the greatest.” The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) invites all healthy people, between the ages of 16 and 65 years, who weigh 50kg or more and lead a safe lifestyle, to display their compassion by donating blood. “Blood is essential for treating accident victims, cancer patients after chemotherapy, surgery patients, burn wound victims and many others, and the only source is from blood donors. Local singer to participate in BAMA awards I

t is time for the annual Bay Area Music Awards (BAMA) which was initiated five years ago as an arts development program.

The project’s primary objective is to stimulate and encourage development, as well as create synergy among the different roleplayers in the music, arts and entertainment industry in the Nelson Mandela Bay. Since the first red carpet awards ceremony hosted in June 2011, the event has been supported by capacity audiences. Participating in this year’s event in the category for gospel singers will be Carmelita Rossouw from Uitenhage. She started her singing career at the age of 16 as a member of the Lighthouse Christian Centre choir in Cape Town. “I also had the wonderful opportunity to sing in the back-up choir for international gospel artists like Alvin Slaughter and Larnell Harris,” said Carmelita Rossouw. During 1996 an album was recorded for Cape Town artist Jeffrey Tiemie with Car-

melita as a back-up singer. During 2006 she moved to Uitenhage and started singing duets together with Mark Fortuin and also joined the group The Elimites. She recently decided to continue her singing career by going solo. “The 2015 edition aims at reaching artists throughout the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro including areas we previously couldn’t reach owing to a lack of resources, like KwaNobuhle, Despatch and Uitenhage,” said Ashton Prince, BAMA Project Coordinator. Die gekose ouderdom vir die persoon wat aansoek doen moet tussen 45 en 50 jaar wees. Drostdy Werkplek sien om na ongeveer 85 verstandelik gestremde persone en beskik oor slegs 6 personeellede om die weeklikse programme aan die gang te hou. )Aansoekvorms vir die brei- en hekelwerkpos by Drostdy Werkplek is beskikbaar by die werkplek in Kerkstraat 17-19 (tussen die Uitenhage kliniek en Magennispark). Camaraderie celebrated at former Swifts rugby club reunion HEILIE COMBRINCK

record turn-out of more than one hundred and twenty members and friends of the former Swifts Rugby Club recently attended a memorial service and reunion to celebrate the club’s rich history in Uitenhage. Swifts most probably is the only rugby club in South Africa which was founded by a rever-

end. It’s history dates back to 1890 when Reverend Charles Bloomer Jecks of St Katharine’s Anglican Church in Uitenhage selected a team of youngsters from the church choir and entered them in the local junior rugby league. At first they were called the St Katherine’s Choir rugby team, but during 1891 the Swifts Rugby Football Club was established. “It was a wonderful ceremony and Minister Robin Behrens from the St Katharine’s Anglican Church very appropriately delivered a

message regarding rugby and the spirit of excitement,” said Cicil Hayward, convener of the annual Swifts Rugby Club reunion. According to him the club’s activities stopped during 1991 and it was remarkable that the feeling of camaraderie is just getting stronger. “Friends from all over attended. It was an honour to have the late ‘Big’ Norman Erasmus’ wife, Glenda Stow, attending. She came all the way from Cape Town to attend the me-

morial service and reunion.” “This will continue to be an annual event until the end of time. It will be held every first Sunday of the month of February and all former players, their family and friends are welcome,” said Hayward. )Swifts Rugby Club also is on Facebook and those interested can like them and view their activities and forthcoming events. Our primary focus will always be on unplanned pregnancies and therefore called crisis pregnancies.” Clothes for boys and girls The public are requested please to support the Centre as they urgently need summer clothes for boys and girls aged 6 months to 3 years, as well as toddlers’ shoes. The Centre is also in need of volunteers. “If you have extra time on your hands and are willing to give up a few hours a week to be a blessing to someone else, then please pop in and speak to us,” said Downey. Country’s oldest boys’ high school celebrates 193rd year HEILIE COMBRINCK South Africa’s oldest boys’ high school, Muir College which was established in 1822, will celebrate its 193rd annual reunion and founders weekend from 6-7 March. Old boys, parents and friends from around the country will be travelling to Uitenhage to participate in the festivities that the weekend has to offer. The founder’s day assembly will be held in the College Hall on Friday, 6th March at 10:30. This will be followed by tennis matches in the afternoon and the Old Muirite Union annual general meeting at the school library at 18:00. The party mood will kick-in at 18:30

with a Party in the Quad where there will be live entertainment and eats and treats for old Muirites as well as their partners and friends of Muir. On Saturday, 7th March various rugby matches will be played against Victoria Park as well as O.M.U. cricket matches like the Streso All Stars vs 2nd XI. The founders weekend highlight will be the O.M.U. dinner with world-reknowned International Rugby Board referee Craig Joubert as the guest speaker and Daron Mann as Master of Ceremonies. Sy en die egpaar se dogtertjie Kylie is Leon se grootste ondersteuners langs die Victory Raceway ovaalbaan. Leon het in 2011 vir die eerste keer agter die stuur van ’n American Saloon ingeklim, nadat hy sy radiobeheerde motors en al die nasionale trofees wat hy in dié sport gewen het vir eers op die rak gebêre het. Hy verwys spottend na homself en sê, “dit is ’n bewys dat ’n man se speelgoed net groter raak!” Is sy eerste seisoen agter die V8 se stuurwiel het hy ’n derde plek behaal in Victory Raceway se American Saloon klubkampioenskap. Die daaropvolgende jaar was hy weer derde en is aangewys as die belowendste drywer. In 2013 was Leon die naaswenner van die streekskampioenskap asook in die klubkampioenskap. Hy herhaal die twee prestasies in 2014 en wen ook die trofee vir die beste voorbereide American Saloon. “’n Mens raak jou kar gewoond, maar ek bly bewus daarvan dat dit baie kragtig is en dat enigiets enige tyd verkeerd kan gaan,” sê Leon.
