Concern over emerging squatter camp HEILIE COMBRINCK

he slowly but surely growing squatter camp on municipal land next to Verwoerd Drive, Vanes Estate in Uitenhage, is a growing concern to residents from the highly taxed upmarket neighbouring area. “I’ve been monitoring the situation for the past two years. An increasing number of shacks are being built and extended families are settling themselves on the municipal
land,” said Armand du Preez, well-known businessman and resident of Vanes Estate. According to him the contract with the existing farmer was not renewed and municipal contracts in the past allowed for emerging farmers each to have one designated person on a daily basis to keep an eye over their live stock roaming this piece of municipal land. The area concerned is between the Hillwacht road and the historic Concentration Camp site. “This ain’t emerging farmers, but an

Obituary- Sister Hultzer( nee Smith) Nursing Sister Pietie Hultzer (nee Smith) passed away peacefully on Monday, 17 March 15 in the Netcare Hospital in Uitenhage. Sister Hultzer dedicated her life to the nursing of the sick and elderly throughout her career spanning approximately 45 years. She studied at the Sharley Cribb Nursing College in Port Elizabeth where she qualified as a nursing Sister. She worked at the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital for approximately 26years. Qualifying as a Nursing Sister, she also had to lay down the Florence Nightingale Pledge. The pledge embodies the principles of practising once profession faithfully and to devote oneself to the welfare of those committed to one's care. This also sums up the way in which Sister Hultzer dedicated herself throughout her career to those she cared for. After leaving the Provincial Hospital, she took up the position as Matron at the Rosa Munch Old Age home in Uitenhage. During this time she met John Hultzer a former Uitenhage Mayor whom she married, after her first husband died years earlier. She continued working in Old aged homes in Franschhoek (Fleur de Lis), Mosselbay, Knysna and Jeffrey's bay. After completing relieve work at the Jansenville hospital she finally retired in 1996. Sister Hultzer was 82 when she passed away due to respiratory failure. She leaves behind her two sons and a daughter, seven grand children and six great grand children. The funeral will take place on Friday 20 March 15 at 11h00 at the NG Kerk Noord in Uitenhage corner of Harper and Mosel Street.

“It is not to say that if there is a contract all are happy chappies!” said Du Preez. “There is no such thing as a contract for squatters or emerging farmers who are invading municipal land. A contract with an emerging farmer can not legalise the increasing number of people settling on the land. Currently there are approximately 60 persons already settled on this piece of municipal land.” Value of properties affected? He argued that as with serious municipal matters in the past which fell upon deaf ears, this problem is handled in the same way. “I’ve been requesting for assistance for months now and am either laughed off or get no reaction from the municipality’s side. “This emerging squatter camp will affect ratepayers in the near future. “It will affect the value of their properties and it will have an effect on safety and an increase in criminal activities.” He explained that through his involvement with the local neighbourhood watch, “I’ve experienced that most of the criminals that we had encounters with escaped to the neighbouring reconstruction and development programme (RDP) houses or to the emerging squatter camp to hide amongst the community. “The municipality’s ignorance regarding urgent requests to attend to the matter seems to me like a deliberate delay and excuse to extend RDP houses to this area in future. “If this illegal squatter camp is not stopped by the municipality, ratepayers from this area should withhold rates and taxes as little notice is taken by the municipality to rectify the situation. “We currently might not have any bargaining power, but if ratepayers across town join forces, it might become a civil power to take note of,” said Du Preez. Councillor Terblanche said there are “a lot of ugly thorns in Uitenhage that are not being attended to by the municipality.” Councillor Terblanche requested an urgent meeting together with senior officials from the municipality’s human settlements department which is responsible for vacant land.

Overgrown plots snakes a nuisance HEILIE COMBRINCK Puff adders, brown house snakes and rats are frequent visitors to residential properties in the Strelitzia Park Extension mainly as a result of overgrown plots which are not maintained. “We have received correspondence from the Department of Parks senior metro officials that there is no more funding available for bush clearing. The funds were exhausted already in December 2014.” This statement came from Councillor Peter Terblanche, as there is an increase of Uitenhage residents reporting service delivery issues regarding overgrown plots and the nuisance with snakes and rats entering residential properties. “It was said that additional funding will be made available for rough cutting and roadside spraying of both overgrown municipal plots as well as private plots. ie ouers van ’n twaalfjarige meisie het gedink die feit dat sy hulle soms ignoreer was pure tienermaniere, maar was geskok toe hulle hoor sy ly aan ’n sledsame gehoorverliesgebrek.

=Carli Diedericks (12) is gediagnoseer met ’n seldsame gehoorverlies gebrek. Fondsinsamelings word gehou vir haar om gehoorapparaat te kry waarvan die waarde R43 000 is. FOTO:VERSKAF Carli Diedericks se gehoortoetse, wat die afgelope vier jaar by die skool gedoen is, het ’n geleidelike afname in gehoor getoon. Maar dit was veral haar spraak wat haar ouers Didi en Debbie Diedericks begin pla het en aanleiding gegee het dat sy in Februarie vanjaar gediagnoseer is met die seldsame “Cookie Bite” neurosensoriese gehoorverliesgebrek. “Die gehoortoetse het ons nie regtig bekommerd gehad nie, want beide haar oortromme het ’n paar jaar gelede gebars. So, ons het gedink sy mag miskien aan aandagafleibaarheidsindroom ly,” het Debbie Diedericks van Uitenhage gesê. Carli is na die oor-neus-en-keel chirurg, Dr Julien Nel, waar sy gediagnoseer is met die Cookie Bite gehoorverliesgebrek. “Die oudiogram van die gehoortoetse lyk letterlik soos ’n koekie waarvan ’n deel uitgehap is en daarom word daar dan na dié toestand verwys as Cookie Bite. Dit kan nie deur ’n operasie of medikasie herstel word nie,” het Debbie gesê. Carli, ’n graad 7 leerder aan Laerskool Albertyn, kan harde dowwe klanke hoor soos ’n deur wat toeklap, hond wat blaf of glas wat breek, maar kan nie fyner geluide of gesprekke hoor nie. “Dit affekteer haar skoolwerk en haar hele hoërskoolloopbaan lê nog voor.”
Carli moet nou twee gehoorstelletjies kry wat elk R9 000 kos, sowel as ’n aparte apparaat wat om die onderwyser se nek moet hang om agtergrondgeluide te doof. Dié apparaat kos ’n verdere R25 000. Daarby sal sy weekliks by ’n spraakterapeut moet uitkom om te help met die uitspraak van woorde. “Ons is bly dat die gehoorverliesgebrek vroeg by Carli gediagnoseer is, maar ons harte is seer, want haar hele lewe lê nog voor,”

o compete in an Ironman event takes hours of training, dedication, determination and hard work. All the training athletes go through to prepare for the event develops physical strength, emotional resilience as well as mental fortitude.
It is widely understood that it is necessary for athletes to be at their peak to participate in the event. Even if athletes are not in top form, their training programme for the Ironman can assist in improving their health and physique and also mental well-being. The event hosts many participants who never thought they would one day participate in, or complete, an Ironman. Some participants challenged themselves to improve their lifestyles, lose weight and take control of their health. One such athlete is Dawid Mouton, 28, from Theresa Park in Pretoria. He says that participating in the Ironman changed his life. “It got me to stop smoking and drinking excessively. I also lost 25kg.” Ross Lutsch, 32, from Arcadia in Pretoria admits to enjoying life on the couch before participating in Ironman. He aims to complete the race in a “reasonably good time”, and his personal victory lies in losing a third of his body weight in a little more than a year. Luvuyo Bangazi, 38, of Lovemore Heights in Port Elizabeth tipped the scales at 117kg. In 2013 he volunteered at the Ironman South Africa bike check-in/check-out station. He says, “From then on, I was fascinated with the sport and the enduring spirit of the athletes. I knew then that it was an experience I had to go through myself as a way to help me battle my weight. Today I weigh between 75kg and 78kg and feel much stronger mentally and physically. Ironman has given me a second chance at life.” Louis-Ras Joubert, 35, of Langebaan led an unhealthy lifestyle and, at 124kg, couldn’t walk to the bus stop. He decided to put himself through training to complete the Ironman and has completed the race in less than 11 hours. )The Standard Bank Ironman African Championship takes place on Sunday, March 29 in Port Elizabeth.
