Arrests owed to police’s back-to-basics approach

Thieves on the hunt for older vehicles

The police in Uitenhage are requesting the community to be more vigilant and to assist them to curb the theft of motor vehicles in the area. According to police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart, a number of incidents have been reported to the Despatch and Uitenhage police that have occurred over the last few months, where older types of models (1980 to 2005) were stolen. Vehicles that were stolen range from VW Golf, Isuzu bakkie, Toyota Corolla, Ford Bantam bakkie, Mazda
and Fiat Uno. “Theft of motor vehicles is becoming an increasing concern for the police and owners are requested once again to park their vehicles inside a complex, or in a garage and to install the necessary visible anti-theft devices. “Car thieves tend to avoid cars with alarms or anti-theft devices because they attract attention when they go off and definitely assist as a deterrent,” said Captain Swart. It is advisable able to install a vehi-
cle immobilizer system such as fuel cut-offs and smart keys or a GPS tracking system. Drivers are also urged to make sure that their vehicles are locked when activating the remote locking devices. Always park your car in a well-lit area and be aware of your surroundings. Metro wants to audit all commonage
One of the big issues in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole is that stock owners do not hire land, and do not pay for services or water or grazing.

n audit of all available commonage in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro is to be done, as the number of cattle and stray animals has become a source of concern.
Mayor Athol Trollip says that in the last audit done, there were 37 different smallholder and farming associations with approximately 7 000 animals in Walmer, Motherwell, Despatch and KwaNobuhle. Trollip says he has had a meeting with the metro’s cattle owners, and has requested that they establish a farmers’ association or an urban cattle owners’ association because the municipality cannot confer with each cattle owner individually. The request for an audit follows after 11 cattle were allegedly shot dead in the Kruisrivier area just outside Uitenhage.
André Voigt (37) of Kruisrivier appeared in court last week on charges of unlawful discharge of a firearm and transgression of the Animal Protection Act. “The recent case of the 11 cattle that were shot is a question of frustration of the landowner who says his property is being occupied by stray animals.” Trollip opines that this action is unacceptable because nobody may take the law into their own hands, but owners of livestock must not allow their animals to destroy other people’s property. “One of the big issues in our metro is that stock owners do not hire land, and do not pay for services or water or grazing,” he said. When there is no grass, as at present in this time of drought, cattle will move towards where there is grass. It is exacerbated by the fact that stock owners allow their cattle to move through urban areas.

“They cut through fences. The weekend before last I received information of a large dam of water at the Arlington tip, and a large leak in a pipeline. We established that the stock owners had broken the pipeline by means of a pick to obtain water for their stock. “We have deliberate destruction of municipal infrastructure by stock owners. “In the Uitenhage area I saw how a main sewerage pipe had been chopped open so that the sewage could flow and cause the grass to grow for the cattle to feed on it,” said Trollip. He added that the department of public health did not have a budget to handle stray animals. Stray animals are loaded on to a trailer and brought to the municipal pound at the SPCA Uitenhage. Deirdré Swift, SPCA Chairperson said that almost 20 head of cattle had been brought in since the pound was reopened.

New substation to secure electricity supply T
he old problem of an unreliable electricity supply to the Uitenhage and KwaNobuhle distribution areas will soon be a thing of the past. This is thanks to a more than R50 million renovation and maintenance investment in the Nivens Drift and the Mabandla Substations. “We are all too aware that our level of power
outages is still too high, particularly in Uitenhage and Despatch and the Northern Areas,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Electricity and Energy, Councillor Anette Lovemore. “We are determined to bring the level of power failures down to the absolute minimum.” According to municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki, the Nivens Drift project entails the building of a new 132/11kV load centre with 132 kV power lines, bring-

ing the power into the substation for local distribution at 11 kV in the western area of Uitenhage. “This project will guarantee a reliable and safe electricity supply to the affected areas. It will add significant capacity in the western areas of Uitenhage for additional electricity demand in wards 45, 48, 46 and 47,” said Mniki. The renovation work at Nivens Drift will be completed towards the end of 2017. At the Mabandla Substation in KwaNobuhle, more than R10 million will be spent on refurbishing the medium voltage switchgear. This work will drastically reduce the number of faults on the system, a frequent cause of electricity outages for the residents of Kwa-
Nobuhle. This project will be finished next year in June. According to Lovemore, the municipality is aggressively attacking the two main reasons for the outages, namely old and failing infrastructure and vandalism and theft. These projects are only two among many projects that the municipality will embark on in improving electricity and energy infrastructure across Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Other work that is currently underway includes exploring solar energy alternatives to supplement our energy demand, replacing high energy consuming street lights to LED energy saving lights, and improving security at substations. ormer zoo lion, Nelson, and confiscated “exotic pet”, Ciam, are starting new lives in their ancestral home of Africa. Nelson and Ciam travelled from their temporary home in Belgium - via Germany - to Port Elizabeth, where they were introduced into their spacious, safe and enriching accommodation at the award-winning Shamwari Game Reserve. With them every step of the way on their more than 10 000km journey was Born Free Foundation co-founder and actress, Virginia McKenna , who watched with delight as Nelson and Ciam explored their new surroundings. “The lyric goes ‘life is worth living when you’re born free’ but for the two lions, Nelson
and Ciam, who were not born free and never lived free, life is now, at last, worth living,” said Virginia McKenna (85) who played the role of Joy Adamson in the iconic movie Born Free. Nelson, after 14 years of imprisonment and about 2 years at the Natuurhulpcentrum rescue centre in Belgium, and Ciam, bought from a terrible circus by someone who kept him illegally in his back yard, will now have a new life at the Born Free sanctuary at Shamwari. “Seeing them take their first steps into their huge natural enclosures was utterly joyful. At last they are free to live where lions belong and will be treated with the care and respect they deserve. How lucky I was to be there to share the moment,” said McKenna.
The two lions started their journey from Natuurhulpcentrum rescue centre, Belgium, on Thursday 4th May. Born Free Celebrity Patrons, comedian Jim Moir (Vic Reeves) and his wife – model and actress Nancy Sorrell helped carefully prepare Nelson and Ciam for their journey and have been closely following their progress. “It was wonderful to meet the magnificent Nelson and Ciam and to help the Born Free team prepare them for their journey to Shamwari Game Reserve,” said Jim Moir and his wife Nancy Sorrell. “Nelson and Ciam highlight the plight of captive wild animals worldwide that are still kept in zoos and circuses or as ‘exotic pets’ just for the entertainment of humans. We are
so happy to hear they are settling into their new homes and know they will be in the best of hands.” Nelson is now living at Born Free’s Julie Ward Animal Rescue and Education Centre, while Ciam’s new home is at the Jean Byrd Centre. Nelson and Ciam’s new lives at Shamwari Game Reserve will be a world away from their previous circumstances, which highlight the sorry plight of the millions of wild animals worldwide kept for human entertainment – in zoos, circuses or as ‘exotic pets’. Nelson was rescued from a French zoo when it fell into liquidation. Ciam was confiscated from a cramped cage in a garden in Southern France. (-Heilie Combrinck)

Sunridge Village family fun run The Sunridge Village Family Run/Walk (5km & 10km) will be held on Saturday starting at 07:00. The action starts at 10:00 and challenges include the tyre hole, wall of death and various hilarious activi-
ties. It will be an open day event and the public are invited to attend. The 12 finalists will be competing individually for points. There will also be a prize for the Mr PE uberMANN bringing along the biggest fan club. So the challenge is on to let them stand out in the crowd so that judges can know whom they are supporting. Altesaam 31 bestuurders het dié toets by die Uitenhage-verkeersdepartement geslaag met die oog daarop om as werknemers van die Nelson Mandelabaai se snelbusdiens agter die stuurwiel in te skuif. Rano Kayser, burgemeesterskomiteelid vir paaie en vervoer, sê dié mylpaal toon die vordering wat die metro met sy geïntegreerde openbare vervoerdiens (IPTS) gemaak het sedert hy in Desember verlede jaar ’n memorandum van ooreenkoms met taxiverenigings gesluit het. “Sommige van die begunstigdes het dalk net tot graad 7 of graad 8 skoolgegaan,” sê Kayser. “Met dié opleiding neem ons hulle uit hul
vorige omstandighede en bied aan hulle hoop en ’n toekoms. “Met ’n kode 14-rybewys kan hulle mededingend wees en vragmotors ook bestuur. Ons gee hulle ’n visstok eerder as ’n vis.” Die vier begunstigdes wat nie hul leerlingrybewyse ontvang het nie, sal ’n kans gegun word om die toets weer te doen. Vir Gregory Mitchell (50), die taxibestuurder en -eienaar wat eerste uit die lokaal gestap het, was die toets maklik. “Ek het al 15 jaar gelede my rybewys gekry en die padreëls bly dieselfde vir kode 14. Dit is die bestuurslesse self wat ’n aanpassing gaan wees, maar ek is reg daarvoor.” Die snelbusdiens sal na verwagting teen einde Junie in werking tree nadat 144 taxi bestuurders opleiding ontvang het. Kayser sê egter die skade wat verlede week gedurende betogings in Helenvale aan die IPTS-bane op Standfordweg aangerig is, moet nog bepaal word en herstelwerk sal dalk nodig wees.

Blood donors thanked for ‘gift of life’ T
here is no artificial substitute for blood and because the need for blood is constant - so is the need for donations! Therefore blood donors form part of an elite group of voluntary life savers in giving what can not be manufactured: blood. “As a result of the ever increasing demand for blood, we need more people to realise the importance of blood donation and thereby help to save many lives,” said Nina van Wyk from the South African National Blood Service. Transfusions of blood and blood components have become an essential part of healthcare today. Blood is essential for treating accident victims, cancer patients after chemotherapy, surgery patients, burn wound victims and many others, and the only source is from blood donors. We don’t just need to give blood in the event of tragedies or emergencies. Instead, it should be a normal and routine part of our lives. Regular blood donations mean that there will be sufficient amounts of safe blood in stock. The Uitenhage Blood Donor Centre wish to thank all blood donors for their time and precious blood. They recently held a donor function during which blood donor members received recognition for the units of blood donated. Winter wise electricity use Many cost conscious consumers who have converted to prepaid electricity to cut their energy bills, are still spending excessively in winter. According to Shadrack Palmer, chief commercial officer at FNB, customers on average have spent 12% more on prepaid electricity purchases during the 2016 winter period. This was subsequent to a 9.4% average price increase in April 2016. “This year, the national energy regulator has approved a 2.2% average price increase
which was implemented on 1 April 2017 for Eskom direct customers and will be effective from 1 July for municipalities,” said Palmer. Following on the increased usage trend during winter and the increased tariffs, Eunice Sibiya, Head of Consumer Education shares six tips to lower electricity bills: .Lighting – always use energy efficient lights and avoid switching on lights in rooms that you aren’t using. .Gas – consumers that use gas heaters

and stoves can reduce their electricity bills substantially in winter. Although converting to gas may require a large investment initially, you will save in the long term. .Geyser – the bulk of electricity in most households is consumed by geysers, especially during winter. Installing a geyser timer to manage consumption during peak times can help consumers to save. .Refrigerator – old freezers generally use more electricity than new ones as they work harder to maintain cool temperature. Consider servicing or replacing your old fridge to save on electricity costs. .Appliances on standby mode – applian-
ces that are not completely switched off and remain on standby mode such as TV, Hi-Fi, Decoder and Microwave, collectively consume a lot of electricity at the end of the month. .Pool – cover your pool in winter when you are not using it as pool pumps and filters use a lot of electricity to keep it clean. “With electricity costs continuing to increase, it has become imperative for consumers to continuously look for practical ways to reduce their consumption. After fifteen 15 years of enjoying indoor cricket as a sport the masters in the Shockwaves indoor cricket team have decided to retire. Shockwaves is the longest running team in the local indoor cricket league and was formed during 2002 by the late Mark Preddy. The team of Shockwaves has played in every league and went out on a high note by winning their last game as a team together. The reins have now been handed down to the younger generation to continue the proud reputation that all the Shockwaves members have built over the years.
Racing circuit to separate men from the boys “We are gunning for glory,” said Volkswagen Motorsport factory driver Daniel Rowe just days before the start of round three of the Sasol GTC Series at the historic East London Grand Prix Circuit. “This is a real driver’s circuit, and driving skill combined with a bit of bravery is often rewarded with a good result here in the Eastern Cape,” added teammate Mathew Hodges. Both Rowe and Hodges will want to capitalize on good performances and pace from earlier in the season. “We’ve shown good pace in both the opening two rounds of the championship at Killarney in Cape Town and Kyalami in Midrand, but lady luck most definitely did not play along. The result is that we don’t quite have the points that we feel we deserve,” continued Rowe. Hodges was quick to add that luck plays a huge part in racing and that with lady luck on your side, the championship points table could have had a different look to it. “Our Volkswagen Jettas have been very fast up to now, so it’s just a matter of time before we manage to get them to cross the line first in a GTC race.” Hodges and teammate Rowe stole the show at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit when they went head-to-head in race one for at least 6 of the 8 laps that made up the first race. “The difference between winning and not standing on the top step of a podium is really marginal,” added Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. Hodges currently occupies 4th position on the points ladder with 79 points, 8 ahead of defending champion Michael Stephen.
